Global ThanksgivingTraditions

With its historical nod to the1621 feast between the Pilgrimsettlers and American Indians, aswell as a focus on food, footballand shopping, it may seem thatThanksgiving is a holiday unique tothe United States. But several othercountries around the world partakein similar festivities.

Korea. This Asian nationcelebrates Chuseok on the 15th dayof the eighth month of the lunarcalendar, sometime in Septemberor October. Koreans use this timeto honor and give thanks to theirancestors. The main dish issongpyeon, half-moon-shaped ricecakes with various fillings.

Germany. Areas of Austria andSwitzerland join Germany incelebrating Erntedankfest, usually inearly October. The centerpiece ofthe holiday is the Erntekrone, or“harvest crown,” made of grains,

flowers and fruit. Parades, music, dancing and church services roundout the festivities.

Ghana. The Homowo festival takesplace each August in the Accraregion of this African country. Thejoyous occasion commemorates theGa people’s historical victory overfamine, when they “hooted athunger” (the translation of theword homowo).

Canada. The first CanadianThanksgiving, or l’Action de gracein French-speaking regions, wasobserved in 1578. It is celebrated onthe second Monday in October andfeatures a meal familiar to Americans:turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoesand pie.

Talk About It

MealtimeTraditions

Families oftenhave mealtimetraditions, fromfavorite recipesserved to the seatingarrangements.Use the followingquestions toreminisce and shareyour family’scustoms at thedinner table.

Did your familyhave any mealtimetraditions when youwere a child, such asSunday dinners orspecial foods servedon holidays andbirthdays? Shareyour favorite stories.

What was yourfavorite meal—breakfast, lunch ordinner? What foodswere your favorites?

Who prepared themeals? Did you helpcook, set the table, orclean up afterward?

How many peoplewere at your tableduring a meal? Dideveryone have theirown place at thetable, or did youswitch seats?

Did you ever haveguests for a meal?

A Slice of Pie HistoryPies, with their sweet fillings and

flaky crusts, are popular desserts atThanksgiving dinner, but pie hasn’talways been the dish we know today.

Dating back to ancientcivilizations, the first pies were filledwith meat, fish and other savoryfoods. Crusts, made from variousgrains, were created to hold thefilling, but not eaten. The Greekswere the first to combine flour andwater to make a pastry shell.

Historians say pie made its way toEngland in the 12th century, where itwas called pye. Beef, lamb and duckoften made up the filling, held

together by a thick, inedible crust. At royal banquets, “surprise pies”were used to provideentertainment: Live rabbits, birdsand even people were encased inbaked pastry and emerged whenthe crust was cut open.

English settlers brought theirmeat pies to Colonial America.Colonists later used local berriesand other fruits to make sweet pies.

As pioneers moved to the West, new pie recipes were created usingregional foods. Then the20th-century innovations ofshortening, canned fillings andready-made crusts madepie-making easier for all.

Contrary to popular belief, therewas no pumpkin pie at the firstThanksgiving in 1621. ThePlymouth Colony had no butter orwheat flour for making a crust, andovens had not yet been built.Pumpkin pie didn’t become astaple of Thanksgiving dinners untilthe 1800s.

A Quick Guide toCharitable Giving

Giving is a huge aspect of theholiday season, and many peopleuse this time of year to extend theirgenerosity to charities. But it can betricky to navigate the vast number ofnonprofit groups. Follow these tips todetermine where your donated dollarsshould go.

Get the facts. No matter how youfirst hear of a charity, before you giveany money, visit its website to gathercrucial information, including its exactname, address and telephonenumber; its mission; and how fundsare distributed.

Resist pressure. Reputable charitieswill not rely on heartbreaking storiesto pressure you into donating. Instead, they should focus on the specific worktheir group is doing. Simply say no ifyou feel suspicious or uncomfortable. And when an organization sends youa free gift, you don’t have to returnthe favor.

Never send cash. Dropping a fewcoins in a donation jar is OK, butfor larger contributions, send a checkor use a credit card. Unlike cash, these methods are traceable, soyou can ensure the group receivedyour donation.

Army vs. Navy:America’s Game

The annual Army-Navy footballgame, known as “America’s Game,”kicked off as a simple challenge backin the late 1800s, but remains todayas one of the greatest rivalriesin sports.

The first gridiron matchup betweenthe Army Black Knights of theU.S. Military Academy at West Point,N.Y., and the Navy Midshipmen of theU.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis,Md., took place Nov. 29, 1890, afterNavy issued a challenge to Army’snewly formed football team. Navy wonthat first meeting with a score of 24–0.

Except for a few occasions, the twoservice academies have squared offannually since 1899, traditionally onthe second Saturday in December.Because crowds for the game are solarge, the game is held at a neutralhost stadium, most often inPhiladelphia, and televised nationally.

Along with the intense rivalry, thegame is known for its traditions, suchas the pre-game March On, where theArmy’s Corps of Cadets and theNavy’s Brigade of Midshipmen, all infull dress uniform, march in formationacross the field to take their seats. Atthe game’s end, as a sign of solidarity, both teams stand together as eachsings its alma mater to the fans inthe stands.

Talking Turkey

For more than30 years, the expertsat the ButterballTurkey Talk-Linehave been at theready, answeringhome cooks’ holidayturkey-relatedquestions. Here’s ataste of some of thehotline’s mostmemorable inquiries:

A Talk-Line expertasked a caller whatstate her turkey wasin, meaning howthawed it was.The caller replied,“Florida.”

After finding aturkey from 1969 inhis father’s freezer,a man phoned inrequesting tips onhow to cook the30-year-old bird.

A woman calleddisappointed, wondering why herturkey had no breastmeat. The Butterballstaffer figured out thecaller’s turkey wasplaced upside downon the platter.

A man cut histurkey in half with achainsaw, thenwanted to know if thechain’s grease wouldaffect the turkey.
