Gaming May Help SeniorsStay Sharp
Researchers find that gamingoffers seniors more than arecreational activity: Video gamesmay have the potential to helpseniors stay sharp and responsive.
A 2008 study followed 40 seniorswho played the computer strategygame Rise of Nations over aneight-week period. Researchersmeasured the cognitive abilities ofthe players before and aftergame-play, and observed improvedperformance on memory, reasoningand cognitive tests. There werespecific improvements in “executive
control processes”—planning,scheduling and multi-tasking.
Studies are also focusing on theNintendo Wii, a gaming system thatrequires movement and is alreadyused in many senior centers. Onesuch study, conducted at a seniorcenter in Florida, found that the Wiibowling game boosted players’heart rates by about 40 percent.
“There’s a growing body ofevidence that suggests playingvideo games can improve olderadults’ reflexes, memory andspatial abilities,” said Jason Allaire,an associate professor ofpsychology at North Carolina StateUniversity. Allaire is part of a teamthat plans further research on howvideo games boost memory andthinking skills in seniors, through agrant from the National ScienceFoundation.

Elderly Who Exercise Reap Enormous AdvantagesA study of 1,900 people born in 1920 and 1921, assessed at ages 70, 78 and
85, found that exercise is a key to living a healthier life. In the study, those whowere physically active for at least four hours each week were 12 percent lesslikely to die between the ages of 70 and 78; 15 percent less likely to die betweenages 78 and 85; and 17 percent less likely from ages 85 to 88. They also werebetter able to perform daily rituals and live independently. Plus, they reportedfeeling less isolated.
“Despite the increasing likelihood of frailty and dependence ... remaining andeven starting to be physically active increases the likelihood of living longer andstaying functionally independent,” wrote Dr. Jochanan Stessman and colleaguesat Hebrew University Medical Center, Jerusalem. “Our findings clearly supportthe continued encouragement of physical activity, even among the oldest old.Indeed, it seems that it is never too late to start.”

Blooms of LoveIt’s a love affair in full bloom that
just keeps growing. Roses, with theirsoft petals and sweet scent, havecharmed people of all ages and walksof life, been immortalized in art andverse and served as a longtimesymbol of love and affection.
Although fossils indicate theexistence of roses as far back as35 million years, cultivation of theflower is believed to have startedabout 5,000 years ago in China.Roses were grown all over the RomanEmpire, then introduced throughoutEurope in the 18th century. Since thattime, hundreds of varieties of roseshave been cross-produced to createtoday’s boundless bouquet of colorsand fragrances.
Creating a new rose variety takesabout 10 years of testing anddevelopment. The new rose is namedby its grower. Some roses are labeledbased on their color or otherattributes, but many are the namesakeof a famous person or celebratedplace or event. Continual favorites arethe Peace, Queen Elizabeth andKnock Out varieties.
Roses take center stage onValentine’s Day, when more thanone-third of American consumers willbuy the blooms as gifts. The mostpopular color is red, symbolizing loveand passion.
The Merriment of Mardi GrasMardi Gras means “Fat Tuesday” in
French and takes place the day beforeAsh Wednesday, when Lent begins. Some celebrate an entire season ofMardi Gras, called Carnival, whichbegins on Epiphany on Jan. 6.According to many historians, MardiGras has roots in ancient Romanspring festivals. The holiday is thoughtto be the blending of these festivalsand the season of Lent, a time ofpenance and fasting. The celebratingand feasting during Mardi Gras was away to rid the home of rich food anddrink that could not be consumedduring Lent. Mardi Gras came toAmerica in 1699, when Frenchexplorers landed in present-dayLouisiana, just south of what is nowNew Orleans. The men held a smallFat Tuesday celebration, and in theyears that followed, other Frenchsettlers observed the holiday withstreet parties, masked balls and largefeasts. The festivities continue to be acherished tradition in Louisiana, theonly state where Mardi Gras is a legalholiday. New Orleans holds one of themost famous Mardi Gras celebrations, with multiple parades put on byorganizations known as krewes.
Another tradition still alive today isking cake, which is braided briochedough laced with cinnamon andcovered with sugar or icing in theMardi Gras colors of purple, gold andgreen. A small plastic baby is bakedinside the cake, and whoever finds thebaby in their slice must prepare thenext year’s cake. Join us on Monday,Feb. 8, at 3:00pm when wecelebrate Mardi Gras!
