American Heritage is proud of the 57 members of the Class of 2013 who have been named to the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program. These 57 students are among the 50,000 highest-scoring participants of 1.5 million program entrants. Heritage has claim to the largest number of Merit Semi-finalists in the state of Florida with 36 students, and another 21 Commended Scholars. Students who reach Finalist status in February of next year are eligible for college scholarships offered by Merit Scholarship, corporations and colleges.

#1 Private School at National Math CompetitionAmerican Heritage School was well represented at the National Mu Alpha Theta Convention held July 8-12 in Boston, MA. The Heritage Math Team once again earned the number one ranking among participating private schools.

Mu Alpha Theta is the national honor society for math scholars. There are 1,732 chapters of Mu Alpha Theta worldwide.

In addition to finishing as the number one private school in national competition, Heritage took home a total of 95 trophies for both team and individual events ranging from Algebra II to Calculus.

We congratulate our students for their excellent showing at the national competition and for making American Heritage number one in math!

Meet Judge David Haimes who has joined our Pre-law Program and will teach students in the program Honors Evidence and Honors Trial Advocacy. In addition to his activities at Heritage, Judge Haimes is with the 17th Judicial Circuit, Ft. Lauderdale.

He is a Cum Laude graduate of the University of Notre Dame and a Summa Cum Laude graduate of the Notre Dame Law School. With pride in his alma mater, he is President of the Notre Dame Club of Ft. “all types of felony cases, ranging from third degree felonies to capital murder cases.”

The judge is very enthusiastic about the opportunity to teach students at this level. He states, “I have always enjoyed teaching. I have recently taught attorneys at trial advocacy courses and judges at the Florida Judicial College. Growing up, I always wanted to be a high school teacher and coach. However, after I finished law school and started working as a lawyer, I knew that someday I wanted to become a Judge. I feel blessed to be able to be both a teacher and Judge.”

His expectations for students in his classes: “Students will learn how to utilize the Federal Rules of Evidence and how to introduce evidence at a trial. I expect that the students will participate in mock trial activities and will be ready to both learn and have some fun.”

The judge and his wife Dianne have five children, two of whom are at Notre Dame. A son, Brian, is a freshman at Heritage.

Joshua Grosso, class of 2012, representing Florida State Thespians, The Straz Center for the Performing Arts and American Heritage School’s production of Phantom of the Opera, made his Broadway debut recently at the Minskoff Theatre on the set of The Lion King and WON the National High School Music Theatre Award as best actor in the United States competing with 60 other gifted young men from across the United States from as far as California, Utah and Oklahoma.

That garners him a full scholarship to NYU valued at a little over $260,000 and a $10,000.00 cash prize. PBS television network was on the campus of American Heritage on Friday, July 13, filming his work with our camp and school for a three episode television special that aired in prime time during September. PBS staff spent a day on the campus and a day with his family getting a back story for the special.

Congratulations to Josh! If you missed the PBS special, there is quite a bit of information on their website or Google Joshua Grosso to view some of his performances.

My Summer Fun - Orfeo Music Festival in Vipiteno, Italy

This summer, American Heritage senior Kristopher Winselmann spent three weeks in Vipiteno Italy playing his cello with high school, college and professional musicians from all over the world.

Kris was first introduced to the idea to perform at the Orfeo Music Festival (www.orfeomusicfestival.com) by his private cello instructor, Dr. Ross Harbaugh - Professor of Cello - Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. It was a quick approval by Kris’s parents that started the odyssey that included having to audition to be accepted into the program.

Kris flew into Munich, Germany, on July 5 and took a bus over the Austrian Alps into Vipiteno, Italy, located approximately 60 kilometers south of the Austrian border. The first weekend was a “free weekend” during which Kris adjusted to the seven hour time difference and met the other musicians and set up in his hotel. Once their free weekend was over, the festival participants began training for several concerts which they would perform for the residents of the town. Practicing up to 12 hours a day, the group quickly mastered some very difficult music. There were 60 members of the orchestra, and Kris’s trio was made up of a University of Miami violin player, a Russian pianist and Kris on cello. The 2012 festival was considered the “best ever” by Dr. Harbaugh.

All work and no play would make for some very cranky musicians, so there were many side trips offered during the weekend. Kris went to Venice, Italy, Innsbruck, Austria, Salzburg, Austria (birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart); and to Lake Garda in Italy for a swim in 55 degree water.

When the festival was over, Kris said goodbye to his instructors and friends from many nations around the world and took a bus back to Munich airport. He then flew to Bremen, Germany, to visit family friends for a week of relaxation.

Understandably, Kris states, “I will remember that trip and my experiences for the rest of my life.”

How I Spent My Summer Vacation...

Many Heritage students forsake the beach and the mall during the summertime to follow more interesting pursuits. Below are examples...

Student Presents Research at Conference in The Hague Netherlands

On July 1, Suganth Kannan, grade eight, presented at the International Conference on Engineering Failure Analysis V (ICEFA V) in Hague, Netherlands, sponsored by Elsevier. His research centered on Innovative Mathematical Model for Earthquake Prediction (IMMEP). He had submitted his abstract to the conference as suggested from State Science Fair judges. His was selected out of numerous international abstracts.

After mingling and learning much from prestigious engineers from around the world, Suganth headed to Rotterdam with other presenters from the conference. In that city, he viewed the world’s largest movable storm surge barrier. A tour guide studying water management engineering explained the history and innovative engineering behind the barrier design and its operation in the city. Suganth conversed with knowledgeable professors from Australia, Netherlands, Scotland, Turkey, China and England and gained further insight into engineering and his own research.

Near the end of his tour, Suganth received great feedback from the chair of the Hague conference Dr. Clegg, who invited Suganth to submit his paper to the Elsevier Journal for consideration for publishing.

The Junior High Presents Neil Simon’s Fools

Leon Tolchinsky is overjoyed. He’s landed a terrific teaching job in a beautiful little Russian town. When he arrives, he finds people sweeping dust from the stoops back into their houses and people milking upside down to get more cream. The town has been cursed with chronic stupidity for 200 years, and Leon’s job is to break the curse. To make matters worse, Leon has learned that if he stays over 24 hours and fails to break the curse, he becomes stupid too. Why doesn’t Leon leave? He has fallen in love with a girl so stupid that she has only recently learned how to sit down. Will Leon break the curse and get the girl? Join our Grade 6-8 students as Heritage presents Neil Simon’s Fools on Nov. 1st-3rd in the Black Box Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $6.00 for students and $8.00 for adults. Upper School students, as well as staff and faculty, receive one free ticket with their school ID.

Senior High School Fall Musical

Based on a story in The Weekly World News, BAT BOY: THE MUSICAL is a musical comedy/horror show about a half boy/half bat creature who is discovered in a cave near Hope Falls, West Virginia. For lack of a better solution, the local sheriff brings Bat Boy (Jonah Stabinski) to the home of the town veterinarian, Dr. Parker (Chris Essex), where he is eventually accepted as a member of the family and taught to act like a “normal” boy by the veterinarian’s wife, Meredith (Chandler Morehead), and teenage daughter, Shelley (Danni Dikes). Bat Boy is happy with his new life, but when he naively tries to fit in with the narrow-minded people of Hope Falls (led by Pablo Torres, Spencer Perdeck, Dante Norris, Emily Schwartz, Lindsay Abbott, among others), they turn on him, prodded by the machinations of Dr. Parker, who secretly despises Bat Boy. Shelley and Bat Boy, who have fallen in love, run away together from the ignorant townfolk, but their happiness is shattered when Meredith arrives and reveals a secret. Soon the entire town arrives and hears the shocking story of Bat Boy’s origin. “Big laughs…It’s remarkable what intelligent wit can accomplish—a jaggedly imaginative mix of skewering humor and energetic glee.” —NY Times. Presented Nov. 15-16-17 at 7:30 in the main theatre; Tickets are $8.00 for students and $10.00 for adults. Upper School students receive one free ticket with their school ID. Directed by Jim Usher; Music Direction by Nina VanDerhoof, Choreography by Chrissy Wright-Ballard; Orchestra by Kim Imerbsin; Technical Direction and Design by Michael Tavernia; Costumes by Adrienne Conces; Special Effects Make-up by Ellen Dawson.

Join Us in The Spin Cycle

This year, the Drama Department, under the direction of Christina Wright-Ballard, has chosen to celebrate Jerrod Bogard and Michael McKeever, two of South Florida’s hottest playwrights. The first play of the season, The Spin Cycle, is a collection of five politically conscious one-acts and offers a fresh look at the strained relationship between TV media and politics. Let me ask you a question? “If spin is a tilted version of the truth, and if every source of truth is tilted or spun, is truth absolute or subjective?” This is the philosophical impetus, which inspired writer Jerrod Bogard. The varied plots are strung together by segments of an O’Reilly-style newscast, from which this impressively, well-acted play takes its name, and is hosted by the fictional anchor Donna Dillinger (Alyssa Fantel). Audience members, in the cozy Studio Theatre, will fix their attention on the wonderful work, by not only some familiar faces to the AHS stage like Delaney Lovejoy, Adam Setton, & Felicia Reich, but also marvel at the exciting work of a few newcomers, including Tess Rowland, Victoria Pinto, & Sophia Martinez. The first play, “Copper Green” is the simple story of a dad (Ryan DelGaudio) riding the Staten Island Ferry with his family. He is attempting to explain to his son (Brian Pianka) the significance of the Statue of Liberty. In “Just Your Average G.I. Joe,” an army veteran (Brian Haimes) sitting in a bar after his second tour in Iraq, receives a drink to honor his service to our country. His response is a poignantly acted monologue in which he tells why he does what he does. “Hedge” deals with the culture of celebrity worship from the perspective of two sunbathing Beverly Hills nobodies (Elizabeth Schwartz, Katrina Hickey) halfheartedly swatting away paparazzi while waiting for a glimpse of their “friend,” Penelope Cruz. “First Base Coach,” performed by Tess Rowland and Mikey Simon, is a hilarious and heartwarming act about our fascination with childhood, baseball analogies, and the opposite sex. The Spin Cycle concludes with “Jerome via Satellite,” which may be the strongest and most potent play of this quintet. It’s about an American soldier in Iraq, named Jerome, who is going to appear on a cable talk show (called The Spin Cycle) to receive birthday greetings from his family back home in the States. The places where playwright Jerrod Bogard takes this familiar concept are surprising and jolting. The Spin Cycle ultimately seeks to challenge what it means to be an American. The Good and the Bad and the Beautiful. It juxtaposes crassness, indifference, courage, and love in a harrowing and resonant manner. Join the audience in the Studio Theatre, October 24th - 27th, as they laugh and cry their way through The Spin Cycle. Ticket prices are $10.00 for adults and $8.00 for children. (AHS students are FREE with ID.)

Student thespians, stage hands, musicians, directors and technical crew are all gearing up for a great fall season on the Heritage stage. Don’t miss the fabulous entertainment coming up soon!

LOWER SCHOOL PTO NEWSDuring our first weeks of school, I witnessed long car lines, parents purchasing lunch passes, new students getting acquainted and warm welcomes from our faculty. As we transition from our summer vacations to a new school year, our challenges of early bedtimes and homework are once again upon us.

Thanks to administration and their second annual Ice Cream Social event on August 22, students were able to refresh and get into the new school year groove. Along with the teachers, the PTO looks forward to energizing and enriching our students’ education during this early transition and throughout the school year.

Thanks to your contributions to our fundraisers last year, we are happy to announce that we were able to generously fund all of our committees, throw an incredible teacher appreciation luncheon and have a blowout Spirit Day! We also had industrial fans with misters installed in the pavilion/playground area. The PTO also purchased some high-tech headphones for the computer lab, and we gave a monetary contribution towards our upcoming, new and improved website!

Our focus this year is on YOU! We would like to re-introduce all of our wonderful programs to you in hopes that we, along with YOU, can make a difference this school year. Good education does not involve only teachers and school. We, the parents, can also have a significant effect on our children’s progress. I want to invite you to partner with us and get involved!

Please join us on Thursday, September 20th, at 9:00 a.m. for a Welcome Breakfast at the Jacaranda Country Club in Plantation. We will discuss all of our programs and introduce our board members along with committee chairs. We will also have a special introduction from our President, Mr. William Laurie, VP, Dr. Doug Laurie and our Interim Principal, Mrs. Lauren Johnston.

The PTO plays an important role in building the kind of supportive school environment where teachers and students alike can do their best work. We are a terrific source of information in your child’s school and community, too.

Please feel free to contact me regarding our organization. The PTO board would love to hear your creative ideas and opinions.

Thank you.Lucy Goldin, Lower School PTO President, [email protected]

Making Beautiful MusicIn the summer Special Recognition issue, it was stated that The Annual Florida Federation of Music Clubs (FFMC) celebrated their 75th Jr. Convention on May 4 and 5 at the University of North Florida, Jacksonville. Unfortunately, we left out recognition of fourth grader Albert Ting. At the convention, Albert was the state winner for Piano Solo, Elementary II, Division 2. He also received Honorable Mention awards for Piano Concerto, Junior 1A and Piano Duet, Primary IV. We congratulate him and apologizie for this omission.

National History DayAt the National History Day competition held during the summer, Daniel Tanchez, Katie Harrington and Elliott Riches did a senior group performance about Operation Pedro Pan.

The operation took place over four decades ago as over 14,000 Cuban youths were transported to the U.S. The exodus was organized by Cuban parents who did not want their children growing up in Castro’s Cuba.

Daniel, Katie and Elliott won the immigration in history special prize. Since all three were sophomores, they were not required to do a project but chose to participate.

(Photo) At the student entrance to the Upper School Office, there is a big, black bulletin board which, by the end of the school year, will be filled with pennants labeled with college names. These will represent the colleges to which students have been accepted.

The honor of placing the very first pen-nant of the class of 2013 went to Sarah Torres who was accepted to the Savan-nah College of Art and Design. We look forward to watching this bulle-tin board fill up as students pursue their college choices.
