ROBERT’S RULES OF ORDER

Have you ever felt lost at a meeting with folks making a motion on this and seconding that or wanted to make a motion but didn’t know how? Maybe you wanted to ask, “What’s going on?” but didn’t know how to ask. Too strict an adherence to parliamentary rules can be stifling. However, since Robert’s Rules of Order is what our meetings are predicated on, it doesn’t hurt to bone up on the basics, if for no other reason than to prevent others from “railroading” items for approval. The main purpose of Robert’s Rules is to maintain order and give everyone a chance to speak. Those who are not familiar with parliamentary rules tend to think of them as bothersome; those who know can help meetings proceed more orderly and efficiently. By the way, who is Robert any way? Come to the meeting and find out.

Thank you for the honor of serving as your president for this year. First I want to thank Patti and her board for all they did to help us have a great year in 2007-2008. That’s a tough act for us to follow. The incoming board will do the best job we can.

I look forward to working with you shoulder to shoulder to meet our goals for the year. I know none of you will pass the buck or come back with excuses when we call on you. ABWA has so much to offer our members; all we have to do is be open to the possibilities.

August will be the start of our award year. Let’s get a head start on the enrollment period and start thinking about people who can benefit from the education and camaraderie of membership in ABWA. Meet our 2008-2009 Chapter President....Myrtle Ching-RappaMyrtle is currently the director of the Center for Career Development and Student Employment at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Her first position at the University was that of a student employee in the student government office. Her first full time position was that of the secretary of the Associated Students of the University of Hawai’i in 1969. When she took over the Student Employment Office in 1981, she and the department secretary were the only two full-time employees. Over the past 27 years, she has seen the department change names twice and merged with another office. The Center now has a staff of 15 (with four vacancies left to fill.) These next two years will be extremely chaotic as well as exciting with the staff working conscientiously to improve career development services for students and alumni of UH Mānoa.

On the home front, Myrtle just celebrated her 23rd anniversary of marriage to Peter. She has two children: Jason who is 32 and has a lovely one year-old daughter, Jayden; and Adriana who is 19 and a student at the State University of New York at New Paltz.

Myrtle maintains sanity from her busy work and home life by crafting. She does everything from beading to painting. You will likely see the products of her labor throughout the year, especially at the Christmas party.

“My passion is in teaching nutrition, chiropractic, and holistic lifestyle. I love spending my time with Eric, my fiance and Atlas, our 3 year old Shih Zhu. We love to travel internationally, making a point to travel overseas a minimum of once a year. I love outdoor sports, eating healthy gourmet foods, reading on investments, cutting edge wellness and health, spirituality books.”

Dr. Eliza Kim graduated from Stephens College in 1993 with B.A. in Clinical Counseling Psychology with a minor in Philosophy and Religion. After a life-changing experience with chiropractic, she knew chiropractic was her calling. She graduated from Cleveland Chiropractic College of KC in 1997 with a Doctor of Chiropractic degree and a certification in Acupuncture and Meridian Therapy. She also taught Tae Kwon Do with her father, who is a ninth degree Grand Master, for many years. She currently holds an Instruction Certification with Kukiwon and The World Tae Kwon Do Federation as a third degree black belt.

After selling her extremely successful private practice in Lenexa, Kansas, to another chiropractor, she traveled the world for a year on a spiritual journey. During this time, she had lectured at the International Conflict Resolution Conference in St. Petersburg, Russia, on chiropractic and energetic healing. She realized during this journey, her path was to dedicate her life to holistic healing. She made a mission to heal the sick not only physically but on a spiritual level.

She also knew deep inside she needed to be near the ocean, so she moved to Miami, Florida. She bought and sold another successful practice in Miami before calling Honolulu, Hawaii, her home. When asked why she moved to Hawaii, she will tell you it was always her home.

In 2004, she opened a private practice in Honolulu. Her office is currently located at Waikiki Integrative Health Clinic, a multi-disciplinary clinic with specialists in chiropractic, acupuncture, psychiatry, psychology, and massage therapy.

She is also a co-owner of Trilogy Management. Trilogy provides seminars and coaching services for natural healthcare practitioners in personal and business development. For more information on Dr. Kim and her business, go to www.drekim.net and www.trilogymanagement.net.

Eliza and Eric are getting married on February 14, 2009. They met 5 years ago Valentine's in Miami, FL.
