Course DescriptionThis course will include discussion of the interpretation of polysomnography and actigraphy. Sessions will focus on clinical signs, indications for testing, interpretation of tests and development of treatment plans. The course will be case-based, using index cases to develop guidelines for the use of testing modalities. Additional sessions will use a workshop format to review the scoring of sleep stages and events with extensive use of record samples. Following the course, all attendees will be provided with complimentary access to the AASM’s online sleep study scoring tests; this three-part online exam consists of 75 questions and features instant feedback for each question.

Target AudienceThis course is intended for sleep medicine professionals interested in integrating sleep studies into the diagnosis and management of sleep disorders patients, and those who order, perform and interpret sleep studies. The course will also be useful as a preparation resource for individuals planning to take the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) subspecialty certification examination in sleep medicine.

Course ObjectivesUpon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

• Explain the basics of polysomnography interpretation in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders;• Integrate the International Classification of Sleep Disorders, Second Edition, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine

Practice Parameters and the AASM Manual for the Scoring of Sleep and Associated Events;• Recognize and solve interpretation dilemmas associated with respiratory sleep studies;• Describe the design and interpretation of sleep studies for the analysis of the major respiratory sleep disorders and the major

non-respiratory sleep disorders;• Recognize the major artifacts that occur in sleep studies;• Interpret studies of sleepiness: the MSLT, MWT, and subjective scales; and• Interpret polysomnogram record samples and discuss scoring strategies for respiratory and non-respiratory sleep disorders in

adults and children.

Course DescriptionThis course will begin with a discussion of the neuropharmacology of sleep. Subsequent lectures by recognized leaders in the field will review drug treatments for the entire range of sleep disorders, including standard treatments and treatments under development.

Course DescriptionThe AASM Accredited Sleep Technology Education Program (A-STEP) Introductory Course is an 80-hour comprehensive program for sleep technicians new to the field. The two week course provides participants with the practical skills that are essential for a successful career in the profession of sleep technology and includes a mixture of didactic lectures, online learning, practical exercises and observation at a sleep center.

Target AudienceThis course is intended for sleep trainees and technicians new to the field and those initiating the process of certification.

Course ObjectivesUpon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

• Evaluate patient chart information;• Demonstrate head measurement and electrode application;• Diagram the technology of sleep recordings;• Recognize sleep stages and abnormal respiratory events;• List common sleep disorders and their treatment; and• Critique methods to improve sleep studies.

Course DescriptionThis course will cover topics ranging from the AASM guidelines on identification of patients appropriate for portable monitoring to scoring of portable studies. Divergent views from different healthcare systems will be discussed. Use of unattended positive airway pressure treatment will also be discussed.

professionals seeking to develop strategies for the use of portable monitors in the diagnosis and management of sleep disorders.

Course DescriptionPractice parameters and regulatory agencies have described CPAP adherence as a critical factor in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. This workshop will explore the multifactorial aspects of non-adherence, including mechanical, behavioral and social issues. Faculty will offer practical suggestions for improving compliance and will help participants develop their own strategies for increasing patient treatment adherence.

Target Audience This course is intended for physicians, nurses, physician assistants and technologist involved in the provision of PAP therapy for patients with an interest in improving patient adherence.

Course ObjectivesUpon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

• Identify issues leading to non-adherence;• Recognize equipment modifications and behavioral strategies

Course DescriptionThis course will provide attendees with a review of topics covered on the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) sleep medicine exam through the presentation of a sample exam question, use of an audience response system to poll attendees, and discussion of the correct answer for each question. During the full-day course, attendees will have the opportunity to review and discuss nearly 100 sample test questions and learn valuable test-taking strategies from experts in the field.

Target Audience This course is intended for physicians currently active in sleep medicine, especially Diplomates of the American Board of Sleep Medicine, planning to take the ABMS examination in sleep medicine.

Downtown Chicago Shuttle ServiceThe AASM national office is located in Darien, Illinois, a western suburb of Chicago. This fall, the AASM will offer an optional course add-on of roundtrip transportation from the Marriott Burr Ridge to downtown Chicago (downtown Chicago shuttle service will not be available for the A-STEP Introductory Course). The fee is $25.00 roundtrip for each person, and a minimum of 20 people must register on any available date for the shuttle to be offered.
