Message David Busath, President The exciting events of the past quarter, the Directors and Board Meeting on April 1 and Lyman Days in Bluff on June 10-11, have been great examples of fulfillment of the Society’s mission: to preserve and distribute the story of Amasa Mason Lyman, his wives and his associates. The article about Lyman Days in Bluff by Jed H. Lyman displays the inauguration of our Lyman Family Vacation Destinations plan. Wouldn’t it be sweet if parents could show their children sites associated with these great pioneers as part of their family vacations? Wouldn’t it be nice if there were certain dates when parents could count on there being a tour, speaker, and perhaps a community meal when teenagers could be exposed to the stories from their Lyman heritage in the context of important historical sites? As one example of what can come from such events, Margaret Dayton was inspired to spearhead getting a picture or painting of Platte De Alton Lyman for the Bluff Fort Coop (see her article below). We welcome proposals from Society members for other Lyman family vacation destinations at key locations in the lives of Amasa, his family, and his associates, from Lyman, NH to San Bernardino, CA. • an invitation to the Annual Society and Board Meetings on Sept 30,

• an explanation of the current membership drive, • a request for help finding leaders for the Society

Finally, you will find society business and publication offerings. We hope you enjoy and are inspired by the activities, opportunities, and blossoming vision of the Society.

Lyman Days at Bluff Fort Jed Lyman

The defenses of the Bluff Fort proved no barrier against the hordes of Lymans that descended on the small desert community on June 10th and 11th earlier this summer. To the contrary, we could not have been welcomed more warmly or given more hospitable refuge.

Our group heading up San Juan Hill

Those that arrived early on Friday, June 10th, were able to visit the cemetery that sits on a hill overlooking the course of the San Juan River and the cliffs, or bluffs, which rise dramatically from its banks. Hollywood, in all its attempts to recreate the prototypical graveyard of the Old West, has never approached the mournful,

windswept authenticity of the one in Bluff. Those pioneer stalwarts, there laid to rest, continue to enjoy their peaceful slumber above the town they founded in 1880.

The only event scheduled and sponsored by the Amasa Mason Lyman Educational and Historical Society, was a lecture presented by Jed E. Lyman of Blanding, Utah. Jed has served as a bishop and stake president, and is currently serving as a patriarch in the Blanding Stake. His relaxed, conversational delivery was spellbinding as he told of the struggles faced by the Hole-in-the-Rock Pioneers both during their trek to San Juan and in facing the frontier after they arrived. His remarks extended the storylines of some of the group’s leading participants well beyond the founding of the mission to explore what transpired in their lives in the subsequent years, which provided a satisfying conclusion to his narrative and the evening. You can hear an audio recording of the lecture on the Society website (amlsociety.org) under the "Information/News and Videos" tab and clicking on the line that starts "Jed E. Lyman...”

The venue for the lecture was in the upper floor of the Bluff Fort Co-Op and Visitor’s Center. This beautiful hall was provide to the Society for this event by the Hole-in-the Rock Foundation (HIRF), which established and operates the Fort as part of their work to preserve the history and share the legacy of these faithful pioneers. The HIRF also generously offered Camp Sticky-

ta-tudy at a remarkable low cost, which was further subsidized by the Society for families to enjoy these accommodations very economically.

The other activities suggested by the Society were not scheduled but were attended by many of the participants. These included a drive through Comb Wash to the trailhead at the base of San Juan Hill. This was the final obstacle for the Hole-in-the Rock pioneers before reaching Bluff. After the short hike, David Busath read Chapter 70 from Gerald Lund’s “The Undaunted” to the small group assembled at the summit. This novel uses fictional characters, synthesized with historically accurate figures and events, to artfully render a moving narrative of the Hole-in-the-Rock expedition. The chapter read at the conclusion of this modern ascent is a

moving portrayal of the hardships the faithful progenitors of this group endured when they added this hill to a long list of the stubbornly “impossible” tasks that they accomplished despite their impossibility.

Lyman Days at Bluff Fort concluded with a stop at the Goosenecks overlook above the San Juan River, expansive vistas from the switchbacks driving up the Moki Dugway, and a final stop at Salvation Knoll; a prominence so named for its role in providing the four scouts tasked with charting the course for the 1879 expedition the crucial vantage for reconnoitering the final leg of the journey.

Please also take the time to read the article about this event published in the San Juan Record, the local newspaper, on May 3, 2016 (at amlsociety.org/Information/ News and Videos “Lyman Days in Bluff”) and the report in the July 2016 edition of the Hole in the Rock News, the official newsletter of the HIRF (in hirf.org/ newsletter/July2016.pdf).

The work being done by the Hole in the Rock Foundation is very much aligned with the efforts of the Amasa Mason Lyman Educational and Historical Society. Requests to be added to their email list so that you can begin receiving the HIRF Newsletter can be sent to [email protected]. They also accept donations in any amounts, which can be mailed to:

Wife Directors and Family Representatives: What do they do? In the last newsletter, we learned about the progress on the organization of the Wife Directors and Family Representatives in the April 1, 2016 meeting. Each of Amasa’s wives is represented by a director, and each child and grandchild by a family representative. In many cases, greatgrandchild representatives are needed. Grandchild (or greatgrandchild) reps gather contact information (especially email addresses) for the adult descendants of the person they represent. Child Reps and Wife Directors identify, appoint, train, and encourage volunteer representatives for the children of the person they represent. All Wife Directors and Family (Child, Grandchild, or Greatgrandchild) reps gather stories, pictures, and any other reminders of the person they represent, which, when it becomes possible, are to be uploaded to the FamilySearch record for the person they represent. To gather contact information, the Society has prepared a spreadsheet, which is available at AMLSociety.org (use the link

on the Society website homepage under the banner and menu bar). There is an AML descendant numbering system to help keep things organized. The Society can take the spreadsheets from grandchild (and greatgrandchild) reps and combine them into a single spreadsheet that can be sorted by the descendant number and updated routinely.

The Society plans to add these email addresses to the Society’s mailing list so they can receive the quarterly newsletter, notices about Society activities, and annual membership drive notices. Those who don’t want to receive these things can opt out of mailings, but still be included in the spreadsheet for future reference: there is a column for that in the spreadsheet. And of course, anyone who doesn’t want their name listed can ask for it to be left out or removed.

At the beginning of each fiscal year (August 1), Grandchild and Greatgrandchild reps update their spreadsheets and send them as an email attachment to the Descendant Database Manager, Larry Lyman ([email protected]), copying the Society President ([email protected]) as a backup, and putting “Lyman Descendants” in the subject line. We sincerely hope that this effort will contribute to the project of redemption, a labor of love, for the living and for the dead.

A Portrait of Platte De Alton Lyman for Bluff Fort By Margaret Dayton

While we were listening to the wonderful lecture by Jed E. Lyman on the Hole in the Rock expedition during Lyman Days in Bluff, I couldn’t help but be struck by a grand portrait of Jens Nielsen front and center in the second story hall there in the Bluff Fort Co-op. It hit me powerfully that it would be perfect if we also had a similar portrait of Platte De Alton Lyman there. He was the first president of the San Juan Co-op. He was also the leader of the Hole in the Rock expedition for many, many weeks while Silas Smith was in Salt Lake City. This left Platte, who was appointed second in command, to guide the pioneers through the process of creating the hole, making the road, and guiding them to Bluff. He was also the first stake president there for a number of years.

I voiced the idea around and got quick agreement and support, with

donations totaling $1000. Then I petitioned the Society Board who voted to contribute $500. I will be selecting the photo and pricing artists and frames shortly, but I am guessing that we need at least another $1000 for this project. Will you please consider donating to this valuable and precious cause? Inquiries and checks to the Hole in the Rock Foundation can be sent to my address:

Annual Society Meeting and Board Meeting On September 30, 2016, after a 6 PM Board Meeting, the Society will host a lecture by Edward Leo Lyman at 7:30 PM in the chapel at 1260 S 400 W, Orem, UT. Brother Lyman will discuss the publication of the Amasa Mason Lyman journals by Signature Book, edited by the late Scott Partridge. As only Leo can do, he will help us understand the meaning of this work by Scott: the transcription, editing, and footnotes, and more interesting, the feeling we can get for Amasa’s personality and life experience from the pages of his journal. The book is entitled “Thirteenth Apostle, The Diaries of Amasa M. Lyman, 1832-1877.” The contents of the journals have been available through the LDS Church for several years, but this publication is their first distribution in annotated print. The hardcover book consists of 1050 pages and was originally planned to list for $60

Page 6: Amasa Mason Lyman Educational and Historical society...we can get for Amasa’s personality and life experience from the pages of his journal. The book is entitled “Thirteenth Apostle,

under ISBN: 978-1-56085-236-0 starting August 1, 2016. However, it is currently listed at Amazon.com for $42.24 starting September 15, 2016. Those who know Leo Lyman understand what a choice opportunity this is. Brother Lyman, who recently served as High Priest Group Leader in his ward in Saint George, is a fountain of facts, details, stories, and love. As the author of “Amasa Mason Lyman, Mormon Apostle and Apostate, A Study in Dedication” (University of Utah Press, 2009, 646 Pages), he demonstrates his talent as a historian and his ability and willingness to explore sensitive subjects frankly and forthrightly. Those who have heard him speak at previous Society Expos know how well he weaves a story from the pulpit. Having helped finalize the publication of the journals following Scott Partridge’s passing last October, he is intimately aware of Scott’s contribution and the journal content. Following Brother Lyman’s lecture, refreshments will be served in the multipurpose room. This Society event is scheduled to coincide with the October General Conference of the LDS Church, which begins Saturday, October 1, 2016. Our hope is that many family members who are already traveling to attend Conference might incorporate this gathering into their plans.

Those who are serving as wife directors or family (child, grandchild, great-grandchild) reps, or would like to be or to help with the Board are invited to join us in

the Relief Society room at 6 PM for the Board Meeting.

Membership Drive for Fiscal 2016 Jody Fellmeth, Membership Chairman

Why would I want to update my membership in the AML E&H Society? Membership in the Society is completely voluntary and is a way to support valuable projects that I believe in. Over the past three years, the Society balance has been constant at about $3000 as income from membership dues has paid for foundational Society projects, subscription to and setup of WildApricot organization support software, support of the Edward Partridge Papers project, two annual Society meetings and four Board Meetings, and Lyman Days in Bluff.

Now that these foundations have been laid, we foresee several new projects and several unforeseen projects that are worthy of your support. Some obvious examples are a picture of Platte D. Lyman for Bluff Fort, extension of the Edward Partridge Papers project, preparations for the 2018 Society Expo in Fillmore, UT, replacement of the WildApricot website, tombstone maintenance and upgrades, Lyman Days at Bluff 2017, establishment of additional Lyman Family Destinations, the Society Meeting in October, 2016, and more. The Board of Directors makes all financial decisions for the Society, and it can

Page 7: Amasa Mason Lyman Educational and Historical society...we can get for Amasa’s personality and life experience from the pages of his journal. The book is entitled “Thirteenth Apostle,

N E W S L E T T E R V O L U M E 1 7

be trusted to use funds carefully and frugally.

In the past few years, we experimented with collecting membership dues with careful tracking of membership dates in WildApricot. In the past year, we decided to try out a simpler model for the coming fiscal year, which runs from August 1 to July 31. At the beginning of the fiscal year, we will send out a single solicitation to our email list, requesting that membership fees be sent to the Society Treasurer, Jeremy Lyman, for deposit in the Society account.

If you have renewed your membership in the past few months, there is no need to do so again. Wait until August 2017. But if it has been a while, you can be confident that the Society can use and will make good use of your membership fees and that your membership in the Society will be recorded for the coming fiscal year.

The annual fee for an individual membership is $10. We keep this low, realizing that many of you may participate in many such societies. For a nuclear family it is $25 and for a lifetime membership, $500. Please consider whether you can support the Society goals and if so, please send your checks, made out simply to “Amasa Mason Lyman Society” to:

Jeremy Lyman 842 N 300 W Blanding, UT 84511 Include the membership renewal

form towards the end of this newsletter to specify your contact information.

The Society’s primary mission is to promulgate the history of Amasa Lyman, his wives, families, and associates, in settling the West. Our theme is “Redemption, A Labor of Love.” Our ambitions to fulfill this mission in simple, clear ways keep enlarging and the need to pass family history on to the next generation only mushrooms. We believe that the Society can support and augment the efforts of all families to remember and appreciate this precious heritage.

Who Do You Know?

Thinking about your family members, who would you recommend to serve in the Society? The following leaders are needed now, especially as we begin to prepare for Expo 2018 in Fillmore.

1. Second Vice President – Member of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors who oversees Membership and Legacy Committees, Wife Directors and Family Reps, and serves as the liaison to other family societies.

2. Executive Secretary – Member of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors, who organizes meetings, reminds attendees, takes and posts minutes, facilitates communications, and receives other assignments from the Executive Committee and the Board.

3. Events Committee Chair – Member of the Board of Directors who produces and organizes annual meetings, family vacation

destination events, board meetings, and the Expo.

4. Society Webmaster – Maintain and upgrade the Society webpage

5. Family Representative – Represent a child, grandchild, or greatgrandchild of Amasa Mason Lyman, enhancing their FamilySearch site and for grandchild or greatgrandchild reps, collecting contact information on the Society spreadsheet.

Please take a moment to send your recommendations to Jed Lyman ([email protected]) or David Busath ([email protected]) for any of these important roles.
