Duas on Sighting the New Moon of

the Month of Ramadhan

When your eyes fall on the new moon,

you must not point to it; rather you

should turn yourself towards the kiblah,

raise both your hands towards the sky,

and address the new moon with the

following words:

Dua 43 – Sahifa Sajjadiyah – Upon

Sighting the New Moon of Month of

Ramdhan

It is recommended, at the sight of the

new moon of Ramadhan, to say the

supplication number forty-three of the al-

Sahifah al-Kamilah al-Sajjadiyyah.

Sayyid Ibn Tawus narrated that Imam

`Ali ibn al-Husayn Zayn al-Abidin عليه

once, gazed at the new moon of ,السالم

Ramadhan while he was walking. He

therefore stopped and said the following:

ٱلدهائيب ٱلسهرييع speedy and untiring,

governance!

آمنت بين ن وهر بيك ٱلظلم I have faith in Him Who lights up

darkness through you,

وضح بيك ٱلب هم أ و

آيتي ملكيهي جعلك آية مين و appointed you one of the signs of His

kingdom

وعالمة مين عالماتي سلطانيهي and one of the marks of His authority,

فحده بيك ٱلزهمان so, He identified time through You,

صاني وٱمت هنك بيٱلكمالي وٱلن ق and humbled you through increase and

decrease,

فولي ٱل وٱلطلوعي و and rising and setting,

نت له مطييع أ في كلي ذليك In all of this you are obedient to Him,

إيرادتيهي سرييع وإيل and prompt toward His will.

مريك أ عجب ما دب هر مين أ سبحانه ما Glory be to Him! How wonderful is

what He has arranged in Your

situation!

نيك أ لطف ما صنع في ش أ و How subtle what He has made for Your

task!

ل ٱلله ربي وربهك أ س أ ف So I ask Allah, my Lord and Your Lord,

وخاليقيي وخاليقك my Creator and Your Creator,

رك ومقديريي ومقدي my Determiner and Your Determiner,

ومصويريي ومصويرك my Form-giver and Your Form-giver,

ن يصليي على ممهد وآلي ممهد أ

not effaced by days

ثم ٱل تدنيسها ل وطهارة and of purity not defiled by sins;

فاتي ٱل من مين أ هيالل a crescent of security from blights

وسالمة مين ٱلسهييئاتي and of safety from evil deeds;

فييهي نس ل هيالل سعد a crescent of auspiciousness containing

adversity,

يازيجه عسر ل ويسر of ease not mixed with difficulty,

يشوبه شر ل وخي of good unstained by evil;

ونيعمة وإيحسان favor and good-doing,

and exposition to punishment,

وزيعنا فييهي شكر ٱلنيعمةي أ و allot to us within it thanksgiving for

Your favor,

عافييةي لبيسنا فييهي جنن ٱل أ و clothe us during it in the shields of

well-being,

that which You have ordered us to do in

General Acts for the 1st Night of the

Month of Ramadhan

• It is recommended to take a Ghusl

tonight.

• It is recommended to bathe oneself in

a flowing river and to pour on the

head thirty handfuls of water so as to

be mentally pure up to the next Month

of Ramadhan.

• It is recommended to visit the holy

tomb of Imam al-Husayn عليه السالم so

that the sins will be forgiven and the

like of the reward of those who

undertake the Hajj and the `Umrah in

that year will be recorded for him.

month, elapses, we shall have carried

out all the duties that You have made

نا اللههمه مين ريزقيك ٱلاللي فطار ٱلي ٱرزق O Allah, (please do) grant us the food

with which we break our fasting from

Your sustenance that is legally gotten.

ل لنا فييهي ما قسمته مين ريزقيك اللههمه سهي

O Allah, (please do) make easy for us

the gaining of Your sustenance that You

decide for us,

رته مين ر ما قده مريك أ ويسيfacilitate for us gaining that which You

decide for us,

لثمي ٱ وٱجعله حالل طييبا نقييا مين and make it pure, empty of sins,

جرامي ٱل صاري و ٱل خاليصا مين and free from offenses and flaws.

تطعيمنا إيله طييبا غي خبييث ول ل اللههمه حرام

O Allah, (please) do not feed us except

forbidden.

يشوبه دنس ول ل وٱجعل ريزقك لنا حالل سقام أ

(Please do) let the sustenance that You

decide for us be legal, carrying neither

filth nor diseases.

ري ك ي من عيلم عالني ٱلي بي عيلميهي ه بيٱلسيO He Who knows the secret in the same

was as He knows the public!

ال على عيباديهي حساني ٱلي بي ي مت فضيO He Who confers upon His servants

with benevolence!

(ceaseless) reference to You,

earn Your anger nor of those who go

astray

عمالناأ وزكهيت فييهي blessed our deeds,

ذنوب ناوغفرت فييهي forgiven our sins,

يب ناأ و جزلت فييهي مين كلي خي نصيand doubled our shares from all good

things.

له فإينهك يب الي ٱلمجيVerily, You are the God Who responds,

Shaykh al-Tusi has narrated on the

authority of Harith ibn Mughirah al-

Nadhriy that Imam al-Sadiq عليه السالم used

last night of Sha`ban and the first night

of the Month ofRamadhan:

كلي خي سبييال ن تعل لي إيل أ to make for me a path to every

everything that You do not like.

رحم ٱلرهاحييي أ ي O most Merciful of all those who

show mercy!

overlooked the misdeeds that I have

committed secretly!

ذني بيٱ يي من ل ي ؤاخي رتيكابي ٱلمعاصيO He Who has not punished me for

my committing acts of disobedience

عفوك عفوك عفوك ي كريي I seek Your pardon, I seek Your

pardon, I seek Your pardon, O All-

generous!

تهعيظ أ إيليي وعظتني ف لم O my God, You advised me, but I

have not followed Your advice

ر أ وزجرتني عن ماريميك ف لم ن زجيand You rebuked me for violating

that which You have deemed

forbidden, but I have not stopped.

فما عذرييNow, what is my excuse?

عفوك عفوك I seek Your pardon, I seek Your

is worth forgiving!

عفوك عفوك I seek Your pardon, I seek Your

متيك أ إيني عبدك ٱبن عبديك ٱبن اللههمه O Allah, I am Your servant and the

ضعييف فقيي إيل رحتيك and I am weak and in need for Your

mercy;

نت منزيل ٱلغين وٱلبكةي على ٱلعيبادي أ و while You are the Pourer of wealth

and bless on the servants (of You),

قاهير مقتدير You are omnipotent and full of

power,

عمالم أ حصيت أ You have recorded all their (i.e. Your

servants) deeds,

رزاق هم أ وقسمت decided the sustenance of each one

them,

ن ت هم و أ وجعلت هم متليفة لوانم أ لسيand made them of different languages

and colors

خلقا مين ب عدي خلق in different stages of creation.

ول ي علم ٱلعيباد عيلمك Your servants can never attain Your

knowledge

ول ي قدير ٱلعيباد قدرك and Your servants can never

recognize the real estimate that is due

to You.

ك وكلنا فقيي إيل رحتي All of us are needy for Your mercy.

فال تصريف عني وجهك So, (please) do not turn Your Face

away from me

وٱجعلني مين صالييي خلقيك and include me with the virtuous

creatures of You

ملي ٱل في ٱلعملي و in deeds, hopes,

اءي وٱلقدري وٱلقض

بقيني خي ٱلب قاءي أ اللههمه O Allah, (please) keep me alive in the

best manner of living,

ولييائيك أ فنيني خي ٱلفناءي على موالةي أ و decide for me to die in the best

manner of death keeping loyal to

Your representatives,

عدائيك أ ومعاداةي incurring the enmity of Your

enemies,

وٱلرهغبةي إيليك وٱلرههبةي مينك keeping desiring for You, fearing

from You,

وٱلشوعي وٱلوفاءي وٱلتهسلييمي لك and submitting to You, being loyal to

You, complying with You,

وٱلتهصدييقي بيكيتابيك believing in Your Book,

وٱتيباعي سنهةي رسوليك and following Your Prophet’s

instructions.

ما كان في ق لبي اللههمه O Allah, as for whatever I bear in my

heart,

و رييبة أ مين شك including suspicion, doubt,

و بطر أ و بذخ أ و ف رح أ (excessive) joy, lavish expenditure or

recklessness,

و سعة أ و رييء أ و خيالء أ pride, arrogance, ostentation,

قاق أ ق و نيفاأ و شيdiscord, hypocrisy,

و عيصيان أ و فسوق أ و كفر أ unbelief, licentiousness,

disobedience,

not like;

I thus beseech You, O my Lord, to

substitute all that with belief in Your

promise,

ووفاء بيعهديك fulfillment of my covenant to You,

ٱلعالميي لك ذليك ي ربه أ س أ I beseech You for all that, O Lord of

the worlds!

لميك ت عصى فك أ إيليي نهك ل ت ر أ نت مين حي

O my God, because You are so

forbearing, You are disobeyed as if

You are not present,

ل ت عص نهك أ ومين كرميك وجوديك تطاع فك and because You are so generous and

magnanimous, You are obeyed as if

You have not been disobeyed at all.

ك سكهان أ و رضيك أ ن ومن ل ي عصيBoth those who have not disobeyed

You and I are the inhabitants of Your

lands;

نا بيٱلفضلي جوادا فكن علي so, (please) confer magnanimously

upon us with Your favors

ن زلت فييهي ٱلقرآن أ ٱلهذيي in which You revealed the Qur'an

ن زلت فييهي آيت ب يينات مين ٱلدى وٱلفرقاني أ و and revealed therein chapters of true

guidance and distinction (between the

right and the wrong).

يامه اللههمه نا صي ٱرزق O Allah, make us observe fast in its

days

ياميهي عينها على قي أ و and remain awake in its nights to pray.

وسليمنا فييهي keep us in sound condition for it,

نك ومعافاة وتسلهمه مينها في يسر ميand receive it from us with easiness

مري ٱلمحتومي ٱل مين from among Your inevitable decisions

altered,

ن تكت بني مين حجهاجي ب يتيك ٱلرامي أ (please) write my name in the list of

those pilgrims to Your Sacred House

ٱلمبوري حجهم whose pilgrimage receives Your

approval,

هم سييئاتم ٱلمكفهري عن and whose wrongdoings are

overlooked.

possible things and events,

might travel upon them to His good

and through which He will be pleased

with us!

And praise belongs to Allah who

appointed among those roads His

شهر رمضان the month of Ramadhan,

يامي شهر الصيthe month of fasting,

سالمي و شهر اليthe month of submission,

و شهر الطهوري

يصي و شهر التهمحيthe month of putting to test,

و شهر القييامي the month of standing in prayer,

الهذيى انزيل فييهي القرآن هدى ليلنهاسي و بيينات مين الدى والفرقاني

in which the Qur’an was sent down as

guidance to the people, and as clear

signs of the Guidance and the Separator!

لته ي ا جعل على سائيري الشهو فابن فضي له ري بيHe clarified its excellence over other

months by the

الموف ورةي مين الرماتي many sacred things and

والفضائيلي المشهورةي well-known excellencies which He

placed therein,

غيي له في ايعظاما هي فحرهم فييهي ما احيfor He made unlawful in it what He

declared lawful in others to magnify it,

و حجر فييهي المطاعيم والمشاريب ايكراماHe prohibited foods and drinks in it to

honour it,

تا بييناوق له و جعل and He appointed for it a clear time

م ق ب ز جله و عزه ان ي قده له ل ييي which He (majestic and mighty is He)

allows not to be set forward

ول ي قبل ان ي ؤخهر عنه and accepts not to be placed behind.

دة مين ليالييهي على ليالي لة واحي ثه فضهل لي الفي شهر و سهاها

Then He made one of its nights surpass

the nights of a thousand months and

named it

لة القدري لي the Night of Decree;

in it the angels and the Spirit descend by

the leave of their Lord upon every

command,

سالم دآئيم البكةي ايل طلوعي الفجري على من ا هي يشآء مين عيبادي هي قضائي مين احكم بي

a peace constant in blessings until the

rising of the dawn upon whomsoever He

will of His servants according to the

decision He has made firm.

هي اللهمه صلي على ممهد و آلي

هي معريفة فضلي knowledge of its excellence,

هي و ايجالل حرمتي veneration of its inviolability,

and help us to fast in it by our

restraining our limbs from acts of

disobedience toward Thee and our

employing them in that which pleases

ساعينا ايل لغو ل نصغيى بيwe lend not our ears to idle talk

بصارين ايل لو و ل نسريع بيand hurry not with our eyes to diversion,

ي نا ايل مظور و حت ل ن بسط ايدي

we stretch not our hands toward the

forbidden

نا ايل م قدامي جور ول نطو بيand stride not with our feet toward the

prohibited,

و حت ل تعيى بطون نا ايله ما احللت our bellies hold only what Thou hast

made lawful

ا مث هلت و ل ن ت نا ايله بي ت نطيق السيand our tongues speak only what Thou

hast exemplified,

مين ث وابيك و ل ن تكلهف ايله ما يديينيwe undertake nothing but what brings

close to Thy reward

from Thy punishment!

مين كلهه ك ثه خليص ذلي Then rid all of that from

رييءي المرائيي the false show of the false showers

و سعةي المسميعيي and the fame seeking of the fame

seekers,

ل نشرك فييهي احدا دونك lest we associate therein anything with

Thee

Thee!

هي اللهمه صلي على ممهد و آلي O Allah, bless Muhammad and his

وقفينا فييهي على مواقييتي الصهلواتي المسي in it make us attend to the appointed

moments of the five prayers within

حدهدت دوديها الهتي بيthe bounds Thou hast set,

ف رضت ها الهتي و ف روضيthe obligations Thou hast decreed,

وظهفت و وظائيفيها الهتيthe duties Thou hast assigned,

ا اله وقهته و اوقاتي تيand the times Thou hast specified;

ها منزيلة و انزيلنا فيي and in the prayers make us alight in the

station of

يبيي ليمن االمصي ازيليthe keepers of their stations,

ا رك اني الافيظيي ليthe guardians of their pillars,

ا على ما اوقاتي ين لا في المؤدي

their performers in their times,

هي صلواتك عليهي و آلي عبدك و رسولك ه سنه يعي و سجوديها و ركوعيها في ليها جي على ف واضي

as Thy servant and Thy messenger set

down in his Sunna (Thy blessings be

upon him and his Household) in their

bowings, their prostrations, and all their

excellent acts,

هي اتي الطهوري و اسبغي with the most complete and ample ritual

purity

هي و ابيي الشوعي و اب لغي and the most evident and intense

humility!

و وفيقنا فييهي Give us success in this month to

لةي ي و الصي لبي ل ارحامنا بي ن نصي ليtighten our bonds of kin with devotion

and gifts,

فضالي و العطييهةي لي يان نا بي و ان ن ت عاهد جيattend to our neighbours with bestowal

and giving,

نليص اموالنا مين التهبيعاتي و ان rid our possessions from claims,

رها بييخراجي الزهكواتي و ان ن طهيpurify them through paying the alms,

ع من هاجرن و ان ن راجيgo back to him who has gone far from

us,

ف من ظلمنا و ان ن نصيtreat justly him who has wronged us,

من عادان و ان نساليmake peace with him who shows enmity

toward us

حاشى من عوديى فييك و لك فاينهه(except him who is regarded as an

enemy in Thee and for Thee, for he is

الهذيى ل ن والييهي العدو the enemy whom we will not befriend,

و اليزب الهذيى ل نصافييهي the party whom we will not hold dear),

ةي ن ت قرهب ايليك فييهي مين العمالي الزهاكيي و ان رن بي ا تطهي ن وبي مين هي بي الذ

and seek nearness to Thee through

blameless works which will purify us

from sins

منا فييهي ميها نستانيف مين العي وبي و ت عصيand preserve us from renewing faults,

مين مالئيكتيك ايله حت ل ي وريد عليك احد ما ن وريد مين دون

so that none of Thy angels will bring for

Thee

اب وابي الطهاعةي لك the kinds of obedience and

القربةي ايليك و ان واعي sorts of nearness-seeking unless they be

less than what we bring!

همه ايني اسالك لل ا O Allah, I ask Thee

قي هذا الشههري بيby the right of this month

قي من ت عبهد لك فييهي و بي

Thee within it

مين ملك ق رهب تهwhether angel Thou hast brought nigh

to Thee,

ارسلته اونبيprophet Thou hast sent,

او عبد صاليح اختصصتهor righteous servant Thou hast singled

out,

make incumbent for us what Thou hast

made incumbent for those who go to

great lengths in obeying Thee,

ديينيك و الشهكه فيin Thy religion,

و العمى عن سبييليك blindness toward Thy path,

غفال الرمتيك و اليheedlessness of Thy inviolability,

يمي و الينيداع ليعدويك الشهيطاني الرهجيand being deceived by Thy enemy, the

accursed Satan!

شهرين لة مين ليالي كلي لي و ايذا كان لك في هذا ريقاب ي عتيقها عفوك او ي هب ها صفحك and when in every night of this month’s

nights Thou hast necks which Thy

pardon will release and Thy forgiveness

disregard,

فاجعل ريقابينا مين تيلك الريقابي place our necks among those necks

و اجعلنا ليشهرين مين خيي اهل و اصحاب and place us among the best folk and

companions of this our month!

Household,

هي وامق ذن وب نا مع امهاقي هياللي efface our sins along with the effacing of

its crescent moon,

الخي ايمي عنها تبيع واسلخ هي اتينا مع انسيand make us pass forth from the ill

effects of our acts with the passing of its

days,

ى عنها و قد قضي حت ي ن until it leaves us behind, while within it

Thou hast

ئ طيي ت نا فييهي مين ال اتي صفهي purified us of offenses

واخلصت نا فييهي مين السهييئاتي and rid us of evil deeds!


Household,

لنا لنا فييهي ف عدي و اين ميand should we go off to one side in this

month, set us aright;

و اين زغنا فييهي ف قويمناshould we swerve, point us straight;

نا عدوك الشهيطان و ايني اشتمل علي نه فاست نقيذن مي

and should Thy enemy Satan enwrap

us, rescue us from him!

اللهمه O Allah,

ك ايشحنه بيعيبادتينا اييهfill this month with our worship of Thee,

بيطاعتينا لك ه و زيين اوقات adorn its times with our obedience

toward Thee,

ناري يامي على هي و اعينها في هي صي

help us during its daytime with its fast,

على هي يلي ل و في and in its night with

الصهلوةي والتهضرعي ايليك prayer and pleading toward Thee,

لهةي بي يديك والشوعي لك والذيhumility toward Thee, and lowliness

before Thee,

نا بيغفلة و ل ه حت ل يشهد نار ل علي ه لي بيت فريي ط

so that its daytime may not bear witness

against our heedlessness, nor its night

against our neglect!

مي كذليك سائيري الشهوري و اليه ما واجعلنا في عمهرت نا

make us like this in the other months

and days as long as Thou givest us life,

و اجعلنا مين عيباديك الصهالييي and place us among Thy righteous

servants,

ها خاليدون ين يريث ون الفيردوس هم فيي الهذيthose who shall inherit Paradise, therein

dwelling forever,

اوان و كلي in all moments,

و على كلي حال and in every state,

عدد ما صلهيت على من صلهيت عليهي to the number that Thou hast blessed

whomsoever Thou hast blessed

لضعافي هي و اضعاف ذليك كلي بي ل الهتيها ي ك غي يصي

the slinking Devil,

.نهامين الينهةي وال سيFrom among the jinn and the men.

يامه وقييامه، اللهمه وارزقن صيO Allah: and confer upon me with the

fasting and the doing of acts of worship

during this month,

فيهي بيطاعتيك، والعمل And with the doing of acts of obedience to

You,

،المري وأولوطاعةي رسوليك And to Your Messenger and the Men in

Authority,

م السهالم،عليهي وعليهيMay peace be upon him and them,

وما ق رهب مينك،And the doing of whatever act that takes

me near You,

يك،وجني بن معاصيAnd (please) take me away from acts of

disobedience to You.

نبة وارزقن فيهي .واليجابة واليAnd confer upon me in this month with

repentance, turning to You, and responding

to Your instructions.

،والفشلي الكسلي و الغيبةي وأعيذن فيهي مين

And protect me in it against backbiting and

lethargy and failure.

ب ل في هي الدعاء،واستجيAnd respond my prayers in it.

سمي وعقلي وأصيحه ل فيهي جيAnd grant me well-being for my body and

my intellect.

طاعتيك وما ق رهب مينك،وف ريغن فيهي لي And grant me time to do acts of obedience

to You as well as acts that take me near

You.

ي كري ي جواد.O the All-generous; O the All-

magnanimous.

د فال ولد لك أ اللههمه نت ٱلواحيO Allah, You are surely the One;

therefore, You have not son.

به لك أ و نت ٱلصهمد فال شيYou are the eternally Besought of all;

therefore, nothing is like You.

nothing can overcome You.

و أ و ن ٱلفقيي أ نت ٱلغنيYou are the Self-sufficient while I am

poor.

ن ٱلعبد أ ل و نت ٱلمو أ و You are the Master while I am (Your)

slave.

ن ٱلمذنيب أ نت ٱلغفور و أ و You are the All-forgiving while I am

sinful.

يم و أ و ن ٱلمخطيئ أ نت ٱلرهحي

mistaken.

ن ٱلمخلوق أ و نت ٱلاليق أ و You are the Creator while I am (Your)

creature.

ن ٱلمييت أ نت ٱلي و أ و You are the Ever-living while I am

mortal.

لك بيرحتيك أ س أ I thus beseech You in the name of Your

mercy

تجاوز عني فير لي وت رحني وت ن ت غ أ to forgive me, have mercy upon me,

and excuse my offenses.

deed that You have deemed unlawful

حته ل يكون شيء آث ر عينديي مين طاعتيك وخشيتيك

So that nothing will be more preferred

in my sight than the obedience to You

and the fear of You

ا أحب بت،والعملي بيAnd doing all that which You love,

والتهكي ليما كريهت ونيت عنه،And avoiding all that which You have

detested and warned against.

واجعل ذليك في يسر ويسار وعافيية وما ، أن عمت بيهي عليه

And (please) make all that take place

with easiness, lenience, and good

health as well as the grave that You

have bestowed upon me.

أن تعل وفاتي ق تال في سبييليك وأسألك And I beseech You to cause me to die as

martyr for Your sake,

ك مع أولييائيك،تت رايةي نبييي Under the pennon of Your Prophet and

in the line of Your intimate servants.

أعداءك وأعداء وأسألك أن ت قتل بي

رسوليك،And I ask You to make me the means of

killing Your enemies and the enemies

of Your Messenger.

ئت مين واني من شي وأسألك أن تكريمني بي خلقيك

And I ask You to honor me through

humiliating any one of Your created

beings that You choose,

ول تيني بيكرامةي أحد مين أولييائيك.And not to humiliate me through

honoring any of Your intimate servants.

مه اجعل لي مع الرهسولي سبييال،الله

Another thing which a prudent wayfarer

should not forget during the first night

of this holy month is resorting

(Tawassul) to the impeccable

ones (Ma'sumin) in that night. It is up to

among all exalted and generous ones,

you like inviting guests and want to be

generous towards them

commanded you to provide refuge and

shelter for the wretched and

unsheltered people

فأجر عبدك وأضفهnow here is one of the Allah's

unsheltered servants who has came to

attend your as well as Allah's feast has

attached his heart upon your support

and well as Allah's support and

hospitality

وحزبك ، ودعائك وحايتك ، وشفاعتك وشيعتك ووليتك

be hospitable and allow him to sit upon

the table of your generosity and treat

him in the following manner:

Consider him as your friend and

supporter and do not deprive him from

your best support and endeavors; do not

deprive him from your prayer, backing,

and intercession

وارغب إل هللا ل ف كرم عفوه ، وقبوله ، ورضاه

ask Allah (the Glorious, the Exalted), not

to deprive him from His Forgiveness

and Benevolence; shouldn't deprive him

from His mercy and compassion

وأن ينظر إل نظرة رحيمة با عن رضا ل سخط علي بعده أبدا ، ويلحقن بشيعتكم

املقربي ، وأوليائكم السابقيthen look at him with love and pleasure;

becoming so happy and pleased with

him that after that He should never

become unhappy and angry with him,

should regard him as His sincere friend

and worthy servant...

فإنه ل يرد شفاعتك ، فإن لك عند هللا شأن ق هذا من الشأن ، وقدرا من القدر ، فبح الشأن الذي جعل هللا لك

O' my masters! Please beseech Allah (the

Glorious, the Exalted), to bestow upon

me these things; He will accept your

prayer and intercession, because your

splendour and majesty, and your worth

and prestige before Him is far greater

than what could be perceived by the

human mind and understanding.

I swear to you by your splendour and

majesty, which Allah (the Glorious, the

Exalted), has bestowed upon you, to

look towards me with kindness

and do not deprive me from whatever I

have desired; reward me more than

whatever I have asked in accordance

with your generosity

قرى ضيفهم شيء من العطاي ، ول يقدرون قدر الضيوف السائلي ، كرامتهم وعطايهم ب

فإن العطاء بقدر املعطي ، والقرى بقدر .املضيف

don't look upon my worthlessness,

disobedience, and deviations, because

the generosity of the generous ones and

the hospitality shown by the exalted

ones are in accordance with their

generosity and exaltedness and not in

proportion with the worth and merit of

their recipients.

سادت أنتم الذين علمتم الكرام آداب

الكرامة ، والجواد شيم الود والسماحةO' my masters! You are the ones who

have taught greatness to the exalted

ones, generosity to the generous ones,

and benevolence to the benevolent ones;

إن ذكر الود كنتم أوله وآخره ، وأصله وفرعه ومنتهاه

if there is a discussion about the

benevolence you are the first and the

last as well as the roots and the branches

نه ومأواهوإن قيل الكرم فأنتم معد

magnanimity and greatness you are

their fountainhead;

you are the ones who never returned any

one hopeless and empty-handed

سادت أنتم الذين قلتمas you yourself have proclaimed:

مثل املعروف مثل املطر ، يصيب الب والفاجر

water pour upon the righteous ones as

well as upon the bad ones, likewise;"

افتكمفال تنعون سحائب ر do not deprive me from the rain of your

generosity

فليصبن أمطار جودكمsaturate me with the rain of your

generosity,

فإن من جودكم جائع ، ومن كرمكم ظمآن( do not deprive me from the pouring of

your love ) because I am thirsty for your

affection;

ل ترضوا لضيفكم أن يبيت ف حاكم جائعا ن ضمآ

you don't like that your guests who have

taken shelter in your threshold and have

tied their hopes upon your benevolence

should remain thirsty and hungry.

ما منعتن قراك ، بت فأنت ي مولي مت طاوي ف حاك ، ووصلت إل الالك ،

O' my masters! If you will deprive me

from your hospitality I will die with

hunger under your shelter sitting upon

the side of your tablecloth.

حاشاك من هذه املعاملة مع ضيفك ث . حاشاك

No! No! You wouldn't treat me in this

manner; you are not the ones who

would deprive the guests from your

hospitality so that he would return

heart-broken, hopeless and hungry.

Never! Never!

Dua before Reciting the Holy

Qur’an

It is highly advisable to recite the Holy

Qur'an very frequently at the first hours

of the Month of Ramadhan. In this

respect, it has been narrated that Imam

Ja`far al-Sadiq عليه السالم used to say the

إيني نشرت عهدك وكيتابك اللههمه O Allah, I am opening Your testament

and Your Book.

فٱجعل نظريي فييهي عيبادة اللههمه O Allah, decide my looking in it to be a

kind of worship,

وقيراءتي فييهي فيكرا my reciting in it to be ponderation,

وفيكريي فييهي اعتيبارا and my ponderation over it to be

learning lessons from it.

from the elucidation of Your preaches

therein

يك وٱجت نب معاصيand those who accordingly avoid doing

acts of disobedience to You.

قيراءتي على سعيي ول تطبع عيند Do not seal on my hearing while I am

reciting it,

ول تعل على بصريي غيشاوة do not place covering on my sight,

ول تعل قيراءتي قيراءة ل تدب ر فييها

thoughtless;

حكامه أ تدب هر آيتيهي و أ بلي ٱجعلني rather, (please) make me ponder over

its verses and laws,

ذا بيشراييعي ديينيك آخيlearning the laws of my religion.

غفلة ول تعل نظريي فييهي Do not decide my looking in it to be

inadvertence,

ول قيراءتي هذرا and do not allow my reciting to be

worthless.

(Please) include me with those whom

You raise a rank to the most elevated

position with each verse that they

recite.

آميي ربه ٱلعالميي Respond to me, O Lord of the worlds!

General Acts for the First Day of

the Holy Month of Ramadhan

Take a Ghusl in flowing water and to

pour on the head thirty handfuls of water,

for such a deed brings about security

against all pains and ailments up to the

next year.

It is recommended to wash one’s face

with a handful of rose water so as to be

saved against humiliation and poverty,

and to pour some of it on the head so as

to be saved from pleurisy.

It is recommended to offer the first of the

month prayer that consists of two

Rakàhs and to give alms (sadqa) after it.

It is recommended to offer a prayer of

two Rakàhs at the first of which Surah

of al-Fatihah and Surah of al-Fath (No.

48) should be recited and at the second

Rakàh, Surah of al-Fatihah and any

other Surah should be reicted. If one

offers this prayer, Almighty Allah will

save him from all evils and will keep him

under His custody up to the next year.

When the dawn breaks forth, it is

recommended to say the following

Dua of Imam Musa Kadhim عليه السالم

for the First Day of the Month of

Ramadhan

In his book of ‘Zad al-Maàd’, Àllamah

al-Majlisiy has mentioned that al-

Kulayniy, al-Tusiy, and others, through

an authentic series of narrators, have

reported Imam Musa al-Kaïm عليه السالم as

saying, “Say the following supplication

in the month of Ramadhan—on the first

day of it, as is understood by scholars—

for if one prays Almighty Allah with this

supplication purely and without

associating any false purposes or

showing off, he will be saved, throughout

that year, from all seditious and

afflictions that may injure his religion or

his body; and Almighty Allah will save

him from the evils of all the misfortunes

that will occur in that year.” The

integrity,

and invincible shield,

and keep me safe from the evil of which

I beware in nights and days in the

beginning of this year.

ربه ٱلسهماواتي ٱلسهبعي اللههمه O Allah, the Lord of the seven skies,

ي ٱلسهبعي ٱل وربه ن هنه رضي وما فييهينه وما ب ي the Lord of the seven (layers of) earth,

all that is therein, and all that is

between them,

وربه ٱلعرشي ٱلعظييمي the Lord of the Great Throne,

verses and the matchless Quran,

وربه إيسرافييل ومييكائييل وجبائييل the Lord of (Archangels) Seraph,

عليهي وآليهي سييدي وربه ممهد صلهى ٱلله ٱلمرسليي وخاتي ٱلنهبيييي

and the Lord of Muhammad, blessings

of Allah be on him and on his

Household, the Chief of the

Messengers, the Seal of Prophet!

نت ٱلهذيي تن بيٱلعظييمي أ عظييم ي O Great! You are He who distributes

bounties freely,

وتدفع كله مذور repels all avoided things,

وت عطيي كله جزييل gives all abundant things,

ثييي وتضاعيف ٱلسناتي بيٱلقلييلي وبيٱلك doubles the recompense of good deeds

with little and much recompense,

حدا مين خلقيك أ نت معطييهي أ ما ومين خيي and from the good You give to any one

keep me safe.

ع كلي شكوى ي موضيO He Who settles all complaints!

وي شاهيد كلي نوى O He Who witnesses all confidential

talks!

كلي خفييهة وي عاليO He Who knows all hidden things!

وي دافيع ما تشاء مين بلييهة O He Who repels whatever misfortune

عدائيك ومعاديي ل and antagonizing Your enemies.

ني في هذيهي السهنةي وجنيب اللههمه O Allah, keep me far off, during his

year,

و فيعل ي باعيدني مينك أ و ق ول أ كله عمل from every deed, word, or act that takes

me away from You,

و فيعل أ و ق ول أ وٱجليبني إيل كلي عمل bring me near to every deed, word, or

act

ي قريبني مينك في هذيهي ٱلسهنة

و فيعل أ و ق ول أ ن عني مين كلي عمل وٱم Forbid me to do any deed, word, or act

خاف ضرر عاقيبتيهي أ يكون ميني that I fear its result,

ي عليهي أ و خاف مقتك إييهand I fear Your wrath because of it;

ذار هك ٱلكريي عني ن تصريف وج أ حيlest, You may turn Your Noble Face

away from me.

my share of good fortune.

يم ي رؤوف ي رحيO Compassionate! O Merciful!

ٱجعلني في مست قبيلي سنتي هذيهي في اللههمه فظيك حي

O Allah, keep me, throughout this year,

under Your protection,

واريك وفي كنفيك وفي جيin Your vicinity, and under Your care.

وهب لي كرامتك and give me Your kindness.

عزه جارك Strong is he who is in Your vicinity,

وجله ث ناؤك glorious is Your praise,

Your upright intimate servants,

ليقني بييم أ و attach me to them,

make me submissive to those who

convey from You truthfully.

ن تييط بي خطييئتي وظلمييأ عوذ بيك ٱللههمه أ و I seek Your protection, O my God, lest I

am encompassed by my sin,

wrongdoing,

واي ي وٱتيباعيي لي وإيسرافي على ن فسي

immoderation towards myself, going

after my whims,

وٱشتيغالي بيشهواتي and being involved in my caprices;

وبي رحتيك وريضوانيك ف يحول ذليك ب يني as a result, all that will prevent me

from attained Your mercy and pleasure

يا عيندك أ ف كون منسيand I may be forsaken by You

مت عريضا ليسخطيك ونيقمتيك and exposed to Your wrath and

chastisement.

وفيقني ليكلي عمل صاليح ت رضى بيهي عني همه الله

O Allah, please guide me successfully to

every righteous deed due to which You

be pleased with me

وق ريبني إيليك زلفى and take me nearer to You.

عليهي كما كفيت نبييهك اللههمه ممهدا صلهى ٱلله وآليهي هول عدويهي

O Allah, just as You saved Your Prophet

Muhammad—blessings of Allah be on

him and his Household—from the

terror of his enemies,

وف رهجت مههه removed his anxieties,

horror of this year

ا و سقامهاأ وآفاتيas well as its epidemics, ailments,

يق ٱلمعاشي فييهاأ و حزانا وضيsadnesses, and economic distress.

وب ليغني بيرحتيك كمال ٱلعافييةي In the name of Your mercy, make me

attain perfect wellbeing

ت هى جلييأ بيتمامي دوامي ٱلنيعمةي عينديي إيل من through the perfection of the perpetuity

of Your favors to me up to the end of

my lifetime.

ساء وظلم وٱستكان أ لك سؤال من أ س أ

who has made mistake and wronged,

but then submitted and confessed.
