AM is evolving the manufacturing industry

It is no doubt that 3D Printing is one of the fastest growing segments of the manufacturing market. According to the 2016 Gartner annual report, 75% of manufacturing operations worldwide will be using 3D printed tools, jigs and fixtures to produce finished goods by the year 2020. Considering this developing potential and the increasing use of metal printing to produce end parts, 3D Matters takes on a proactive approach whereby we are constantly investing in the latest AM technologies and looking out for strategic partners and upgrading our talents so that we are ready to support this growth. In fact, we can’t wait for some very exciting events that are going to take place in Q2 this year – this includes a specialist niche service that we will be launching very soon, as well as a strategic collaboration with SIMTech to commercialize a state-of-the-art technology that would greatly benefit Singapore’s critical sectors such as Offshore & Marine, Precision Engineering and Manufacturing. INDUSTRY

Keynote at the NAMIC Precision Engineering Summit 2017

INDUSTRY

2 3

On 23rd January, our CEO Matthew Waterhouse was invited as one of the keynote speakers to share our experiences in additive manufacturing commercialization strategies at the NAMIC (National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Cluster) Precision Engineering Summit, held at the Pan Pacific Singapore. The event was attended by VIPs from both the public and private sectors, including government agencies, research institutions and business corporations.

The topic of the keynote was “Highlights of Successfully Integrating 3D Printing Research into commercial Applications: 3D Matters” –where Matthew shared some case studies of how the industry as well as our company, are working with customers to reach new paradigms in cost savings, continuous improvement and R&D through integrating additive manufacturing processes into their day-to-day operations. For instance, one particularly useful area where 3D printing can help precision engineering companies is to shorten lead time for spares and manage obsolescence in a more efficient way through parts identification, analysis, optimization and then production.

Matthew also participated in a panel discussion on “Integrating AM: Addressing the Industry’s Challenges” later that afternoon, where he joined Moderator Dr. Satish Lele from Frost & Sullivan and fellow panelists from EOS GmBH China, BeAM and UCT Asia to share their insights. As part of the summit, 3D Matters was also invited to participate in an interview prior to the event. “Mr. Maideenkunju Noushad, a 40-year old Singaporean, is a good example of an individual who took advantage of the WSQ courses to acquire new skills, and enter the AM

industry. Mr. Noushad was previously a Tool & Design Engineer for over 10 years. After completing a Specialist

Diploma in AM from Nanyang Polytechnic in 2016, he joined 3D Matters, a local manufacturer providing end-to-

end AM solutions, as an Operations Specialist. The company is currently in the process of opening a new

metal printing AM facility in Singapore, where Mr. Noushad’s skills will be put to good use.”

We were also honoured to be given a brief mention by the Guest of Honour Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Trade and Industry, Mr. Loh Khum Yean, at the Opening Speech of the Launch Ceremony during the Summit.

Mr. Loh shared the story of our Operations Specialist, Noushad, whom he highlighted as a good example of PMETs advancing themselves through continuous training and upgrading, and contributing to the growth of the Additive Manufacturing industry in Singapore:

Indeed, as a learning organization, 3D Matters will also continue supporting the personal and professional development of all our employees, as we progress in our journey to become a leading additive manufacturer in the region.

OUTREACH

3D Matters was honoured to host the CoRE (Centre of Regulatory Excellence) team from the Duke-NUS Medical School at our office and printing facilities on 27th February, for a site visit and discussion on 3D Printing as well as its possibilities and implications for the biotech and medical sector. We would like to extend our appreciation to our guests for the very engaging discussion, and look forward to strengthening our our additive manufacturing capabilities to cater to more medtech companies here in Singapore.

Group visit led by A/Prof John Lim, the Executive Director of CoRE, Duke-NUS Medical School, who is also Chairman of the Singapore Clinical Research Institute and Deputy Director of Medical Services (Industry & Research Matters), Ministry of Health

OUTREACH

DID YOU KNOW?

Continued innovation is seeing radical advancements in 3D printing for the biotech industry – from dental products to prosthetics and tissue engineering, 3D printing is helping to address some of today’s biomedical challenges.

3D Matters has undertaken several projects with our local hospitals and health institutions to aid medical professionals in their planning and visualization, including creating 3D prints from ultrasounds and CT scans, as well as various working prototypes of orthopedic casts.

LIFE @ 3DM

The teambuilding event for Q1 this year was a fun-filled, inter-departmental badminton tournament that took place on 24th February at the Leng Kee Community Centre. Both doubles and singles matches were played and all teams fought hard for camaraderie and glory. Check out our pros in action and congrats once again to all winners!
