THE LEGISLATURE.
The national Legisdatute will openat unou Tin ptibliv arcotliuially invited to attend, lhc
and session of tho people'srepresentatives have been looked forwaul to with great expectations. Theevent occurring once only in two
ears, 7t ecltes more general intei-es- t,

patriotic man in the country hopesto see the good of the country ad-
vanced. May this hope bo fulfilled.
DUTIES OF FIRE POLICE.
The l.i n clearly specifies whatshould be done at files to pi eventrobbery, .is well as preent the pub-
lic being an obstruction to the firemen. The lire police- are im ostcdwith ample power, and it is madetheir duty to establish bouudaiies(or the time being ocr which thepublic shall hae no light to pass. The enfoicement of the law i allthat is wanted. Hers i the law :

INDEPENDENT VOTING.
r.Diioi: Hi i.li.tix:licfore the election took place at
Kouhkiipiiko Inst Wednesday, threatsweie made to the natives that moit-gau- es
held bv a certain person wouldbe lereclosi'd if thev did not votelor the Reform candidate, and thenative laborers on the sugai planta-tions weie told that they could seekemployment elsewheie it they otedfortheXation.il Rcfnim candidate.Five of the hand employed on aplantation weie summarily discharg-d- .
because they availed th.emsehesof the iihieh vaunted liberty, whichis claimed by a certain class, andhas been obtained for the Hawaiianpeople thiough theii elforts. I amsony to say thai this U" one of thetiuits of a system of peonage prac-tised among laborers in Jicarli' allol oiii plantations. A laborer work-
ing foi a sugar plantation in thisdistrict was also told betore electionby messengers that he would have tolijavu if he voted for Mr. Hush. This action oifihe part of plantershas been, no doubt, carried else-
where, and is but the sequel to theamendment in the election law madeby a Maui plantation owner.
I run pleased to sec the spirit ofindependence among Hawaiian as-
serting itself. It is an evidence ofan awakening. I hope the ne.tLegislature will alter the FlectionLaw so as to make a man truly in-

In christening what no doul l willeventually become a place, weconcede with tho committee that"Pear! City" i.--u piettier name thanJ'earl Towii, lVarlville, Hope Town, etc., etc. There is as much differ-eiK-- e
as theie is in the fact that itwill have lo be a town biifoie it ennbe a city. Hut the public was ask-
ed to compete in furnishing the bestn uno for the town. This requestmust either have been overlookedby the committee or else they doknow that there is as much differ-ts'ic- o

MR. BUSH AND THE "MISSION-

KniTon ltn.ixns:Mr, Hush uses the word "mis-slonary- ,"
such as the "missionaryparty," the "white skinned mission-ary," etc. I cannot object only sofar a he uses it in a slurring,
undignified and untruthful manner.
Of course there is a vast differ-ence between the true missionaryand the lalse, us u missionary ismippoaed to be a teacher of good.If hetcaehe3 by prceept'or example, intemperance and tcc in tiny seiwe.by which people aic made vvorM', heis a bad "missioniiiy." If he teachesthose principles that tend to buildup nud bring happiness to tfian, heis a good "missionary," and deserves encouragement and sym-
pathy.I am willing to accept a "mis-
sionaries" the ministers oftho gospel, that are constantlystriving to teach ns a better anda happier way of living. On theseIslands they have been the pioneersof religion a9 well as the pioneers ofcivilization.
I accept r.l30 a9 a good "missionary" tho live merchant Hint malteja "nimble sixpence go as far as aslow shilling. Who biings to usfrom distant countries both com-fort- s
and luxuries that wc wouldperhaps never sec or enjoy but forhim. He brings with him also po-
liteness and good breeding, exam-ples always worthy of imitation.
1 accept as an indispensable "mis-sionary" the mechanic of whateverprofession he may be. lie is the"missionary" that teaches ns thearts of civilicd life by piactioalwork, and we all tun enjoy them.No eiitical eve cm look around Ho-
nolulu and iu her palaces, storesand warehouses, and see the neces-saries and luuiries that have beenproduced by the skilled hand ofman, but must feel thankful that heis permitted to see and enjoy thcecivilizing blessings pioduced by thehand of these skilled teachers--thes- e
indispenable "missionaries" of me-
chanical art.I accept also a- - "missionaries''
the teacher, the professor of scienceand literature, who teaches lhc"young idei how to shoot,"who takes the tottering youngsterand develops him into a giant thatattracts the admiration of tho worldby his mental di-e- cries and per-
formances.J accept the politician (not the
party politician) but the statesman,as a"rnissi(nary" of a high order, who teaches us tho science of goodgovernment, works for the good ofall tho people, lajs his plans deep, solid and iu a measure prophetic, asho looks to after ymrs as well as tothe present time for the fruits of hislabors. He scorncr the dirty tricksof the "patty politician" who im-
putes w r ong motives to all opponents, calls them hard names to gain hispoint when he knows he is falsifying, etc.
I accept all planters as "Mission-aries" of the most useful kind whoobey the first command given toman to "Mibdoc the eaith and havedominion over it," who teach itshow to creato wealth and comfortsfrom the elements, how to turn
into hrnuiv, deserts intofruitful fields iud make them "bios-so-
as the rose" and jield food andcomforts for the happiness of man.I view (as Mr. Hush undoubtedlydocs), all of the above ordcrs, aswellas all olhur useful classes, as "Mis-sionaries," all of them moie or lessteachers ot civilized science, whetherthey be preacheis, pedagogues orplanters, mechanics, merchants orstatesmen, they are all "Mission-arie- "
in Hie most liberal sense, andpreachers of the gospel of cnili.vi-tio- u,
and weai chappy in the thoughtthat so many of that progressive, honorable element, are to be foundin the ranks of the "Reform paaty,"ami' taking Mr. Bush's wmd for it,that so lew "Missionaries" are to befound in the ranks of their oppo-nents, auieii.
Now, Mr. Bush, let life tall: toyou as a fiiend that knows you onlybv your wiilings.

A MERMAID AT LAST.
Jacksonville, April 19. AV. W.Stnntou, mate of the schooner AddleSclmeflcr, now lying at thu iWtirkiilHouse dock, while fuming for baas1500 miles off St. Augustine, drew inhis line, nnd found outnn, led there-in the strangest llsh, if it is a IWh,that has over lieen caught. Thisstrange creature is about six feetlong, pure white and scnlelefis. Thehead and face arc wonderfully liu-nia- n
in shape and feature. TheMhould'Jrs nro well outlined, nndvery much resemble those of a wo-
man, and the bosom is well definedatid shows considerable deveiop- -'
luent, while the hips 'and abdomencontinue tho human appearance. There are four flippers, two of whichnro placed at the lower terminal ion
of tho body, and give one the im-
pression that nature made an effortto supply tho strange creature withlower limbs. Mr. Stanton uonfebscH
to quite a fright on first bight of hisqueer prize, which, on being drawnon board, gave utterance to a low, moaning cry, which might easilyhave bceu mistaken for the bobbingof a baby.
It is extremely unfortunate thatMr. Stanton did not succeed inkeeping thu cieaturo alive, which ho
thinks might havo been done, as thetratige object lived two days after
being taken. Tho. schooner has beenthronged all day by curious visitors, who express much wonder and a:
tonUhment at tho slrango object.Mr. Stanton, after visiting severalports and showing his queer crea-
