Before I begin, let me ask you a question. What do Liz Sutlive ‘05, Andy Anderson ‘75, Tommy Cagle ‘67, Allen French ‘76, Andy Day ‘98 and Patrick Wylie ‘02 all have in common? The answer is they have all learned that the Pike experience does not end when you leave the University of Georgia. How does Liz Sutlive fit into all of this? Liz is a recent graduate of Georgia College in Milledgeville and is to attend the Medical College of Georgia. To be honest with you, I had never laid eyes on Liz until she walked through my back door - and that all began with a phone call. She needed help in finding housing in Augusta and knew I lived here and didn’t hesitate to call me because her dad, Billy Sutlive ‘75, and I were frat brothers. We have worked hard to position and market Pikes as a resource for undergrads, graduates, alumni, parents and the University of Georgia. The good news is it is working! Now it is time to go to the next level. After reading the plan (see elsewhere in this issue), please email me back (wmerry@mony. com) to tell me what committee you want to help with and your suggestions. There will be a House Corporation meeting via email and prior to some home games. Parents and some alumni have shown an interest in hosting rush parties at their homes in different cities, so please let me know if you are interested in being one of the host homes. Got any suggestions on improving the house? We’re open to your ideas! One suggestion was to have the foyer improved/changed at the S. Lumpkin entrance. Please send your suggestions. This will be a work in progress over the next several years. In closing, these actions should send a strong message to President Adams, alumni, students, the University of Georgia, National (Pike), and parents that we are serious about saving our traditions and restoring our house to its original grandeur. Alumni

Possible Committee for our Events: We would like to see an Alumni Chair and an Undergraduate Chair (two people chairing the same committee). The undergraduates could give reports to the brothers at the chapter meetings. Working with the alumni would give them the opportunity to be involved before graduation, so hopefully they’ll stay involved after graduation. a. Recruitment: chair in charge of recruitment of alumni for committees b. Compile database: get list of alumni/active and non-active/names, addresses, telephone numbers/use database for newsletter and for publicity c. Chair in charge of coordinating names and addresses and telephone numbers of alumni/work with person in charge of compiling database; coordinate events for each city (i.e.: Christmas break luncheon, rush parties, etc.)

PublicityGet the word out about a. moneyb. tailgatingc. fundraisingd. other events - marketing Pikes as school leaders in your local newspaper, list your son’s accomplishments and his

achievements....believe me, this helps if he wants to come back home and obtain employment.

Parents ClubList of projects: a. work weekends - establish chairs with three year rotations (secretary/ treasurer/vice president/president)b. coordinate events, help with newsletter, etc...

*Thanks to Ellie Marshall and her crafty moms - this has been a huge success!

Spring Golf Tournament/Silent Auction ChairSometime around the G-Day Game, we’ll plan a golf tournament with a reception afterwards. We’ll also have a silent auction. So, be thinking of items you can donate for the auction (items of value, condo time, items relating to your business, etc...)

Chair for Newsletter DirectoryCompile data as it comes in.

Event Director and PlannerThis person will need to come up with ideas to involve alumni in various cities, work with the Mother’s Club Liaison and work on other events such as Christmas Break luncheon; rush parties, et. This needs to be a different person than the Golf Chair.

I would like to start by saying that I am thankful for the opportunity to serve Pi Kappa Alpha and in particular the Alpha Mu chapter here at the University of Georgia. I am extremely optimistic and excited about the upcoming year. Although the chapter is currently in a solid position, I see much room for improvement, particularly in regards to alumni relations. The current executive council and I have determined that maintaining and strengthening alumni relations is our greatest task for the upcoming year. As many of you remember, the Alpha Mu Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity was chartered at the University of Georgia on January 25, 1908, making Alpha Mu one of the oldest chapters in the UGA Greek system. The chapter maintains an active brotherhood of over 100 members, making Alpha Mu one of the largest chapters on campus. The brothers of Alpha Mu are represented in many areas of the University of Georgia campus including Omicron Delta Kappa, Order of Omega, Interfraternity Council Executive Board, Student Government Association, Golden Key National Society, and numerous other organizations and honor societies. Pi Kappa Alpha also stresses athletics, with numerous varsity athletes in the brotherhood and active participation in all intramural sports. While academics are a prime focus of Alpha Mu, the brothers make time to enjoy a rich social calendar. Along with the many socials, date nights and band parties, our annual events include the following fall events: the regular football tailgates, Frank Sinkwich Alumni Weekend, Parents Weekend, Pig Roast

Weekend, and Formal in New Orleans. In addition, spring events include Pike’s Peak, Beach Weekend, Father-Son Golf Tournament and Spike for Life. All of these aspects comprise the close-knit brotherhood that is Alpha Mu. Further, Alpha Mu is a chapter defi ned by constant improvement. Since pledging in the fall of 2002, I have seen a plethora of changes benefi ting the fraternity as a whole. Some of the more outwardly obvious improvements have been the changes to the house (see article on house improvements). However, not all the improvements of the chapter have been as concrete. Through the years, I have seen a persistent unifi cation of the brotherhood. Each day our chapter becomes a more cohesive body. Today, we are as powerful and capable as I have seen. Nonetheless, I see room for improvement. The three major areas in which I would like to see improvement are our rush program, the overall appearance and safety of the house, and, most importantly, alumni relations. As for rush, I would like to see a movement towards a more structured rush. Too much pressure is put on the brothers during the week of formal rush. With an organized rush program, many of our new members will be determined in the summer. However, this is only possible with a networked database of potential rushees provided by the current brothers and ultimately alumni recommendations. In addition to the changes in rush, I would like to improve fi re safety and continue renovations to the house. In particular, I would like to build a new kitchen downstairs, in

order to reduce the costs associated with catering for lunch and dinners. Finally, I am determined to improve the alumni relations aspect of fraternity life at Alpha Mu. My fi rst action in this matter was the placement of Alumni Relations Chairmen on the executive board. Likewise, Alpha Mu alumni can expect many more alumni-related events in the upcoming year. Some of these will include an alumni cookout followed by a UGA baseball game in the spring, an alumni golf tournament this summer, a black tie event at the Georgia Center in the fall, as well as the usual Frank Sinkwich Alumni weekend in the fall and game day tailgates. Furthermore, we plan to make Alpha Mu as accessible as possible. We have developed a web page in order to keep alumni posted about upcoming events and renovations. We will also be sending numerous newsletters throughout the year. I stand fi rm in my belief that these improvements will not only further develop the brotherhood here at Alpha Mu but also expand the relationships between alumni and undergraduates. Finally, I would like to reiterate the optimism and excitement I have for the upcoming year. I look forward to expanding the bonds between alumni and our current brothers. I anticipate much change over the next year both in-house and out. However, none of these changes will be possible without communication, determination and help. Once again, I am thankful this opportunity to serve Alpha Mu and Pi Kappa Alpha.

ReportUndergrad Treasurer

Financial State of the FraternityPi Kappa Alpha’s fi nancial health has never been stronger. I am currently entering my second term as Treasurer and am using Omega Financial as our billing service. They allow me to have complete control of all bills, but are an outside authority that collects dues. This permits me to focus on properly allocating funds in a responsible manner and not chasing people down for money. From May 12, 2004 through December 14, 2004, the fraternity collection rate was in the area of 95%. This is an extremely high percentage, especially compared to other fraternities on campus. Proper fi nancial security gives our members the opportunity to enjoy everything the fraternity has to offer. I have signifi cantly reduced the improper spending of the past, helping to restore trust in our chapter. Alumni should feel comfortable that their money is going to a worthwhile cause. All of the renovations over the past two years have been paid for by chapter money, showing our dedication to this cause. Please reach back to us as we enter in a new era at the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity.

Joe Pella, Fraternity Treasurer

Here is a recap of our eventful weekend. Thursday night, the fi rst phase of Big Pike, began at Lake Oconee. Food, friends and fellowship made for a great kickoff. Friday morning, after a slight rain delay, match play began with 18 holes of Captain’s choice at the Harbor Club, Lake Oconee. A quite truly beautiful and challenging golf course became completely interrupted once the Pike’s showed up with beers and clubs in hand. Otis (Wayne McGowan ’74) was the clear long ball champion of the day on Par 5 #12. Another outstanding play was Preston Moss’ ‘75 chip shot on #18. Balls were lost and stories were told as the day wound down. After we fi nished golf, we returned to our cottages, which were beautiful. Kudos to Fred Bennett ’48, who did an outstanding job of arranging our accommodations. Two cottages on the golf course and private bedrooms for everyone were more than we had hoped for. Mark Shawe ‘73 did fi nagle the biggest and best bedroom with private bath and fi replace. Special thanks also to Grant Hendrix ’90, who was our treasurer for this getaway. On Saturday, the tournament was held at the University of Georgia’s truly inspiring golf course. Mark Cudda did a great job of organizing the teams, handicapping everyone, and making sure that everything went smoothly. It’s funny though, the three best golfers took all the money and no one was really declared the overall winner. Otis (Wayne McGowan) did walk away with the most money. Grant Hendrix is keeping the score cards for handicapping next year. When Preston Moss fi nished his round of 12 holes, he was a perfect 72. Mark Cudda described his foursomes’ play as truly unbelievable and even gave them world rankings. Alvin Bailey ‘75, who showed up sporting a nine handicap, had some of the best and worst shots of the day. He also gets credit for the best and worst joke of the day (why do you call it golf?). Bruce Fortner ‘73 kept everyone honest and had an incredible chip shot on Par 3 #13. He was the hostest with the mostest, showing up on # 1 tee with Crown and boiled peanuts for all who would partake. Way to go Bruce! It was suggested that Kevin Broderick ‘77 and Woody Merry ‘75 team up next year as a best ball team to truly challenge the elite golfers.

After golf, the band of brothers went to Wild Wings to enjoy beer and what would certainly be a Georgia victory. Well, we enjoyed the beer. We were delighted to have Kevin’s daughter, Kelly, a freshman at Georgia, hang out with us for the game. Mike Lane, who should be fi ling an insurance claim on stolen clubs, kept everyone entertained with lively commentary and witty remarks on some of Georgia’s plays. At halftime, we hot-footed it to the Pike House to watch the end of the game on the big screen TV, hoping to change the Dawgs luck. The only thing that changed, however, was the location. Thank goodness we weren’t shut out! A tour of the house and all its improvements followed the game and then the stories began, beginning with the legendary classes of the 60’s that almost cost us our charter and $4,500 in back dues. We revisited stories of Pikes who sold their cars, bought motorcycles, drove to California (one of them married a Hawaiian Tropic model, divorced her and returned home, all during Spring Break!). We returned to the scene of the crime where Otis got his name, talked of smoke bombs to get unwanted dates out of the Pike House, remembered John Greene shooting his .45 caliber pistol through the concrete walls, remembered fondly Tommy Myers ‘71, Tommy Barnett, Tommy Vincent, Donny Robinson, Doug Wray ‘72, and much, much more. Beers and snappy conversation in the parking lot kept the party from dying. It was exactly like it was almost 30 years ago with the same music; we are just a little older, grayer, and I don’t know about wiser. But a good time was had by all. Andy Brinson ‘75, along with others, received their late night wake up call - as requested! In closing, there are a couple things we need to address. Steve Harris is very ill and Andy Anderson ‘75 (Fort Bragg, NC) is in Somalia; we need to keep both of them in our prayers. For those of you who haven’t been by the Pike House, it has greatly improved and I encourage everyone to continue to use it as a great resource for undergrads and alumni. We are trying to build an email database, so please forward me any Pike’s emails that you might have.

Brothers who want to contact Woody Merry can do so at (706) 733-3190.

ReportAlumni Treasurer

Report from the Alpha Mu Alumni Association Treasurer The Alpha Mu Alumni Association set up its bank account with a $5,000 non-refundable donation from the chapter and a $5,000 no-interest loan from AM Dawg, Inc., the housing corporation of the chapter, with the balance of the loan to be repaid at a future date. The chapter signed a ten-month contract with Affi nity Connection to manage and set-up operations of the Alpha Mu Alumni Association. The monthly fee for this contract is $1032.40. Affi nity will deposit any donations received from active alumni into our account. Full terms of the agreement between the Chapter and Affi nity Connection, Inc. will be provided on request. James Gates ‘97 and the AM Dawg Housing Corporation have discussed some anticipated short term goals for the Alumni Association. We would like to have an account balance of $30,000 by the end of year two. Also, we would like begin the initial requirement-gathering phase to start a capital campaign to fi nance a new chapter house beginning in the next fi ve to seven years.

In just two short years, the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity house has benefi ted from a massive capital improvement plan. In early spring 2003, all the bathrooms received new fi xtures. A total of ten toilets, fi fteen sinks with countertops, three urinals, ten shower heads, and mirrors were installed and one shower was re-tiled. Over Christmas break in 2003, stalls were installed in all the bathrooms. For anyone who has ever lived in the house, you could understand our excitement. Visitors, especially girls, were no longer afraid to use our facilities. Over the 2004 summer, fi ve new exterior doors were added. These replaced old wood doors that did not shut properly or meet fi re code. With the installation of these doors with combination locks, we have not only improved security, we have enhanced the exterior of the house. These improvements were funded solely by the Housing Corporation. Mr. Andy Day ‘94 and Dr. Allen French ‘74 stepped up and took on this role. A percentage of current brother’s dues are paid directly into this account. They were established after our water heater exploded, causing a large unexpected expense for the chapter. The Mother’s Club is made up of current brother’s parents. Their work over the last few years has been nothing short of remarkable. The true hero behind this club is Mrs. Ellie Marshall. Her son Ben will be graduating this May and she will be stepping down from the position she has held for years. Our chapter can only pray her replacement will do half as much.

With private donations from current brother’s families, they purchased a new front door with combination lock. Gone is that door that did not shut or lock properly. The Mother’s Club is also responsible for the renovation of the Alumni Room. This room was just fi nished up, with new carpet, furniture, window treatments and blinds, awards and old composites. It is a nice addition, especially for game days or a quiet place to study. This past summer, we got together with the Mother’s Club and tore out the old carpet and installed new heavy duty carpet with rubber borders. To enhance the life, we have it steam cleaned routinely. In the summer of 2004, then president Chad Radford ‘01 and I took some improvements into our own hands. We decided the fi rst plan of action was the front yard. Along with members of the chapter, we reduced the size of the brick “sidewalk” by half, making it a true sidewalk. We tore out what grass that was left and laid down Bermuda sod. Using many of the old bricks, we built new paths and added stairs along the side of the house. Retaining walls were built to help the erosion problem on the hill. This was a major undertaking that drastically improved our image along busy Lumpkin Street. I remember watering

the lawn when a group of professors walked by and told me how great the house looked. Our next improvement plan was the parking lot. For as long as I have been here, parking was terrible. With no lines, we lacked a sense of direction. The parking lot was sealed and lined which has restored some order to the lot and eased our parking crisis. All of these improvements have all been funded by the chapter’s current members. You can argue that we are present brothers, but these improvements are designed to last into future generations. As everyone expects a bright future, we understand challenges lie ahead. The ownership status of our property and future of our location are still a mystery. Our roof needs serious repair, as does the electrical wiring inside the house. The ceilings in the hallway need to be replaced along with new fl orescent lights. Even though the bathrooms have new toilets and sinks, the tile remains the same. The undergraduates feel confi dent that the work we have funded and done to this point demonstrates our commitment to the house and its future. With your help, we can take this place to new heights. Please consider making a contribution to the annual fund today.

Father-Son Golf TournamentAs spring approaches, I would like to take this time to inform our alumni about our annual father-son golf tournament. Each year, many of our brothers and their fathers travel to Woodlake Golf Club to spend quality time on the golf course. Most of us hit poor tee shots and three putt every green, but we do have a few excellent golfers come out and play. Last year, Pierce Blitch IV and his father, Pierce Blitch III won our best ball golf tournament, shooting fi ve strokes under par. After 18 holes of golf, we tend to work up quite an appetite. So, following our tournament we have a delicious barbeque meal catered to the course. During our meal, we present the “Model Brother” and “Model Pledge” awards. These awards are given to the brother and pledge who most encompass the qualities we deem important to the fraternity. Overall, we have a great time at Woodlake Golf Club, spending time with our fathers and friends. I think each year we have a better turn out than the last. This year, we would like to extend an invitation to any interested alumni. The tournament is set for April 9, 2005. For further details and information, you may contact President Josh Land at [email protected] or Matt Heidt at [email protected]. We hope to see some of you on the course in April.

The undergraduates are thrilled with the improvements that have been made to the house over the past two years, including those to the front door, the parking lot and the front lawn.

On April 13th, 2005, the Alpha Mu Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha will be holding our 3rd Annual Spike for Life Volleyball Tournament with this year’s proceeds going to support our troops. Sororities on campus will compile their respective teams to compete in our tournament. Each brother of Pi Kappa Alpha will raise at least $125 for this charity. The American Red Cross’s Military Services Fund serves as a lifeline between our troops overseas and their families. Using the latest in computer and telecommunications technology, the Red Cross sends communications on behalf of family members who are facing emergencies or other important events to members of the

U.S. Armed Forces serving all over the world. These communications are delivered around-the-clock, seven days a week, 365 days a year. The Military Services Fund also provides our troops with fi nancial assistance and counseling. Our tournament has grown in size every year. This year we are concentrating our efforts to get as many alumni involved as possible. We would like you to mark April 13, 2005, on your calendar and, if possible, try to attend. The tournament will be held at the Pi Kappa Alpha house on a real sand court. Any donations toward the American Red Cross would be greatly appreciated. Through your generous contributions we can help to keep military families connected throughout the world. If you would like to make a donation, please make all checks and money orders payable to the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. If you own a business or would like to make a contribution in a business’ name, it is possible to make a donation in their name. We would appreciate receiving all donations by the event date of April 13th, 2005. Please send all donations to:
