NEW BOYS’ LUNCH

The new boys received a very warm welcome when they attended the New Boys’ Lunch the day before the official start of the new academic year. Upon arrival, the Headmaster, Mr Doble, greeted and shook their hands and welcomed them to the SHS community. The Year 8 buddies were on hand to meet their new friends, give them a tour and help them to settle in. Mr Doble said, ‘It was wonderful to see all of the boys having lunch together in the Pinsent Hall and playing football on the All-Weather Surface; the buddies really do take their responsibilities seriously. The Year 8 boys will continue to be there for their charges throughout the year and I am sure that their friendships will continue to flourish.’

SHS U11 FOOTBALL FESTIVAL 2019

Shrewsbury House U11A football team enjoyed a bright start to the morning with a win over local friends Rokeby School. Despite stuttering somewhat in the remaining matches at the pool stage (a draw with Hampton and a loss to Danes Hill), the SHS team still managed to secure second spot and a place in the main Cup semi-final. A tough game against formerly undefeated Downsend awaited and some excellent football was played to run out victors. This left just the final to play, and a re-match with a strong Danes Hill team. The SHS boys showed progression throughout the event and saved the best until last. They overturned the previous result and beat Danes Hill by a single goal to secure top spot and were crowned cup winners! Well done, boys.

ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND OPENING

Mr Doble was delighted to help officiate at the opening of the Adventure Playground at the beginning of the term. Our two youngest new boys, Avi Johal and Daniel Prisyazhnyuk, joined Mrs Williams, Chair of the Shrewsbury House Association (SHA), to officially open the playground. A huge thank-you to the SHA, whose funding of the new playground has enhanced our climbing, sliding, swinging and crawling curriculum. The playground is proving to be a huge success and not just with the junior boys!

CONVERSION UPDATE

Mr Steve Blevins, Founder of CONVERSION, reflects on a trip over the summer: ‘You’ll remember that last year I took my son Arran and then, fellow Year 7 pupil, Lorcan Murphy to visit Laos on an adventure and to deliver the Shrewsbury House ‘House’ Sports shoes to children participating in the ChildFund “Pass it Back” scheme there.

Well, last December when I heard that Ron Rutland and James Owens, two “Ambassadors” for “Pass it Back”, were endeavouring to cycle the 20,000 km from Twickenham to Tokyo to highlight this incredibly enriching scheme, I knew that I wanted to be part of it. I certainly couldn’t join them on the whole trip for many reasons, but considering that we have sent 2000 pairs of used sports shoes for young people in Laos, the fertile seedbed of the “Pass it Back” development programme, I knew I wanted to at least do that stretch!

After a brief chat with James and Ron just before they left the UK, it was agreed that I could join them and ride between Luang Prabang, on the banks of the Mekong, to Hanoi, Vietnam. I wanted to support them in their goal and show my personal commitment to the coaches and young participants in both countries.

The team consisted myself and three old friends. We arrived in Laos in late July and joined Ron and James and several others on the first stretch to Phonsovan. It was a great introduction to cycling in 30 degree-plus heat and some serious hills! After an

exciting welcome and police escort into town over the following two days, we joined in with a “Pass it Back” session, recruiting young coaches who will go on to train and teach the ‘Pass it Back’ syllabus. The interactive session with an even mix of girls and boys was enlightening and simply showed how engaged young people can be when playing sport and having fun, regardless of any language or cultural barriers.

The following day we observed an hour-long coaching session in which the principles of goal-setting were woven cleverly into a game of passing the ball. The two young coaches guided the youngsters through the principles of teamwork, planning, decision-making, communication and many other skills, effortlessly and professionally.

The ride from here to Vietnam was much more testing, with the tail end of a typhoon treating us to the challenges of monsoon rain and some significant landslides. It was a truly breathtaking experience, both literally and metaphorically! The value and achievements of the “Pass it Back” scheme are very tangible. There is no team sport on these children’s school curriculum and without CONVERSION more than 50% of them would not have any sports shoes. Next year we will send at least 500 pairs to Laos and we will send the same amount to Vietnam, where the “Pass it Back” scheme is growing fast. Thank you all for your used trainers, astroturf shoes and footie boots. The money you give helps with shipping.’

YEAR 1 FOOTBALL FESTIVAL

Shrewsbury House was delighted to welcome Year 1 children and their families from Shrewsbury House Pre-Prep, The Rowans, The Merlin and Wimbledon Common Prep School to play in a football festival. The festival provided an opportunity to play friendly matches against boys and girls from other schools, and the emphasis was firmly on involvement and enjoyment. It was brilliant to see our star SHS Sports Prefects in action refereeing and supporting all the matches, and many thanks to them. There was some excellent football on display and the rain even held off! Thank you to all of the families who attended the event and who contributed to a most enjoyable morning.

VALENCIA FOOTBALL TOUR

At the end of the summer holidays, 42 keen boys jetted out to the sunnier climes of Valencia for a few days of football coaching and fixtures. After an early start on the Tuesday morning they arrived at the ‘Mestalla’ stadium (home of Valencia FC) for an in-depth and exciting tour of the changing rooms, press conference room and even the chance to sit in the dugout. During their time in Valencia they had the opportunity to train at Valencia FC’s training ground with coaches provided by the club. This provided an excellent opportunity for the boys to engage across all age groups and genders affiliated to Valencia FC. For a well-deserved break from the football and the heat, they spent two afternoons playing at the beach, swimming in the sea and enjoying the local ice cream. In the evening, fixtures were played against some of the best teams from around the local area, providing stiff opposition and learning much from their style of play and ability to pass the ball under pressure in all areas of the pitch.

YEAR 8 SCIENCE FIELD TRIP

The Science Department took Year 8 out on a field trip to Stokes Field Nature Reserve, as part of their syllabus to look at relationships in an ecosystem. Despite a wet start, the boys were ready to learn the different methods of how to sample the flora and fauna of the area. They quickly found the benefits and constraints of using quadrats and transects, and learned the names of key species. Back in the classroom, the primary data they had collated was used to discuss the abundance and biodiversity of species. Suggestions were made on the impact that humans, roads and developments can have on an ecosystem.

1ST VI FOOTBALL TEAM – IAPS 6S TOURNAMENT

The 1st VI footballers made the short journey to Rokeby School for the annual Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS) 6-a-side tournament. This is always a competition of a very high standard and the SHS boys knew they would need to be at their best to secure victories in the short-format matches. The schedule of the day allows for teams to play in multiple matches, allowing for all competitors to have the chance to get stuck into some serious competition. The early matches saw the SHS team record two victories, one drawn match and two narrow losses. This was enough to qualify the team for the day’s Plate competition and further matches! Special mention to Freddie Wolff, who joined the squad at late notice and made some great contributions to the success of the team. Well done to all those boys involved in this elite event.

Squad: George Hennessy, Hugh Jacobs, Kit Lockard, Victor Lyashenko, Jack McGibbon, Ben Moffatt, Max Moore, Ruairi Taylor, Jack Williams, Freddie Wolff

U10A FOOTBALL TEAM – WESTMINSTER SCHOOL TOURNAMENT

The Year 5 U10A football team enjoyed a bright start to their season and they can be proud of their efforts at the Westminster event. During the group stage the team managed to pick up one win and two draws, securing second place in the group and qualifying for the main cup competition. In the quarter-final the boys played a strong Wetherby Prep team and they played fantastic football and should have scored in normal time. The game ended 0-0 after extra time and the SHS team were unfortunately knocked out on penalties. A tough end to what was a lovely day, in which the boys’ efforts were exemplary!

PRIMARY FESTIVAL OF SPORT

Shrewsbury House hosted the annual Primary Festival of Sport where three local primary schools (Malden Manor Primary School, St Mary’s Long Ditton Junior School and St Matthew’s CofE primary School) experienced a wide range of sports sessions, delivered by our Sports Department. Thankfully, the weather was kind and the 115 pupils experienced short and sharp sessions in football, rugby, cricket, dodgeball and circuit training. Our guests showed great enthusiasm and application in all areas. A big thank-you to the staff from the visiting schools for taking the time out of their busy days to allow the pupils to have a wonderful morning of sport.

10A AND U8A FOOTBALL TEAMS – CRANMORE SCHOOL EVENT

Both the U10A and U8A football teams hit the road to compete at the Cranmore 5-a-side tournament. The U10A boys had a cracking day by topping their group after wins against Danes Hill School and King’s College Junior School (KCJS) - goals came from Henry McNamara and Tom Saunders. The semi-final versus an organised Downsend team saw the SHS team manage to sneak a 1-0 win to take them into the final. Waiting for them were the talented Cumnor House School team. Unfortunately, the match proved one too far and the team were beaten by a strong opposition. The boys held their heads high after finishing second overall for the day. Well done boys.

The U8A football team also played against some fine school teams. The highlight of the morning was a 3-0 win against Cumnor House School in which Charlie Fox, Jonty Rae and Benji Mudry scored the goals. It is always very rewarding to support the Year 3 boys throughout their fledgling sporting year at Shrewsbury House and this event proved no exception. Congratulations to all the Year 3 boys on their performances.

WESTERN PROVINCE PREP SCHOOL VISIT

Mr Driscoll reflects on the visit: ‘We were delighted to welcome six boys and Mr Andrew Hughes from Western Province Prep School (WPPS) in Cape Town to SHS for two weeks. The boys were fully integrated into school life. They participated during all lessons and were especially intrigued with French and Latin! The boys were hosted by SHS families and, therefore, witnessed how a typical British family went about their daily lives. On their penultimate day, the WPPS boys gave an Assembly to the School in which they spoke about their time at SHS. In their Assembly, they thanked their host families for their warmth and hospitality, myself for co-ordinating the visit and the SHS catering and transport staff for looking after them during their stay. I would like to thank everybody at School, especially the host families Mr Horne and Ms Wulfsohn, Mr and Mrs Richards, Mr and Mrs Dent and Mr and Mrs Craig, for making the boys and staff from WPPS feel so welcome.’

SHS SKI TEAM – BISS CHAMPIONSHIP

The young and elite SHS Ski Team of just four boys made the very early start for the long trip to the Hemel Snow Centre. It is always a pleasure to visit this facility – a wonderful chance to ski on snow and indoors! All four of the SHS boys can be very proud of their performances and they showed progress across the two timed slalom runs. The British (BISS) event attracts over 400 competitors from all over the country, so achieving medals is tough! Very well done to our star young skiers – the future looks bright!

MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING

Once again, the School participated in the Macmillan Coffee Morning, raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. Two of our old boys, Clément and Jérémy Toussaint, who left SHS for Eton College in 2016, along with their mother, Mrs Toussaint, arranged for every boy and teacher in the School to receive a croissant at short break! Each boy was asked to bring in at least £1 as a donation to Macmillan when they arrived at school. A huge thank-you to the Toussaint family for their generosity and kindness, and for raising £420 for such an excellent cause.

SHS CHARITY ALPINE CHALLENGE 2019

Mr Davison, Director of Sport, reflects on the unforgettable trip to the Alps: ‘Very well done to the intrepid group of 19 amazing mums and dads from the SHS community who took on the tough task of trekking in the high Alps in support of Child Bereavement UK (www.childbereavementuk.org). This important charity educates professionals and provides support to families when a baby or child of any age dies or is dying, or when a child is facing bereavement. In the spirit of extending the challenge this year, the group trekked deep up the Servos Gorge (including sections of Via Ferrata!) and stayed overnight in one of the high mountain refuges. Two days and 17 hours of trekking later saw the group walk (slowly!) back into Chamonix and a well-earned beer! It was a really memorable experience and it gave us a chance to truly step away from the noise and busyness of life in the UK. With days of up to 1300 m of ascent, the trip was physically demanding and it was great to share in the palpable sense of achievement at each summit.’

We were honoured to be joined by three representatives from Child Bereavement UK in an Assembly a few weeks after the trip. Mr Davison addressed the boys and gave a presentation on how he and parents from the SHS community raised the phenomenal amount of £35,000. Mr Doble said, ‘Huge congratulations on raising this money; it certainly is a sum that will have a real impact on supporting families experiencing bereavement.’

SURREY SCHOOLS SKI CHAMPIONSHIP

This event marked the first of the year for the quickly developing SHS Ski team. On the day the boys had four seasons’ worth of weather and yet they still skied with great effort and enjoyment. The boys competed both as individuals and as part of their respective age group teams. A special mention to Jacob Jenkinson (Gold) and Gabriel Welsh (Silver) in the Year 4 race and to Carter Jenkinson (Silver) in the Year 5 race.

HISTORY TRIP TO THE HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT

Mr Smart, Head of History, reflects on the trip: ‘The History department took Year 7 boys to Westminster Palace to tour the Houses of Parliament. The Year 7 groups were taken briskly through the House of Lords with its red colour scheme and on to the central lobby, where we saw a TV crew preparing to broadcast. Then it was on to the House of Commons, with its war-damaged entrance doors flanked by Sir Winston Churchill, David Lloyd-George, Clement Attlee and Margaret Thatcher.

We popped in to the ‘No’ lobby, which must have been quite a busy place in recent weeks and where our guide explained brilliantly how laws are passed and how Government works. We looked closely at the Government benches, the Opposition and the now somewhat famous Speaker’s Chair. It was a very busy morning; the boys enjoyed themselves enormously and learned a great deal about democracy, British history and British values.’

BRADFIELD COLLEGE SCIENCE COMPETITION

Towards the end of September, Luke Curle, Ollie Norris, Luke Williams and JJ Agarwal visited Bradfield College to take part in a science competition. Here is their report on the day: ‘After a scenic route through the countryside, we started with a physics challenge, making a speaker which was then attached to a computer. Ours was certainly the loudest if not the clearest. Next, we moved on to a biology challenge where we studied leaf cells and maggots under a microscope. After a quick snack, our final task was chemistry. We thoroughly enjoyed mixing different chemicals and matching them with unnamed bottles, even producing a tornado in a bottle! The competition ended with an impressive science demonstration by Bradfield’s Head of Science, the highlight being when he threw liquid nitrogen at our teachers. After an enjoyable day, physics even followed us home in the form of a double rainbow.’

TANK COMPETITION WINNERS

The Tank Competition was part of a series of events that marked the School’s commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of the outbreak of WWII. Mr Smart, Head of History, said, ‘We had a very good response and a large number of impressive models arrived during our first week at the start of term, from boys across the school. I think everyone told me their favourite model and it was a very hard choice.’ In the end, the judges had to make a decision and the following were awarded their prizes in Assembly by Mr Doble:

Top Prize went jointly to:William Cutler, Harry Ebbans, Josh Jacobs, Lewis Moran and Benjamin Stone

Runners-Up:Sam Cuff, Myles Dickinson, Sam Hazell, Alfie Mitchell and Jax Winterbottom

Special Commendation Certificates were awarded to:Alexander Senny, Adham Karsou-Mubarak, Edward Lyons, William Clarke, George Day, George Hall, Louis Deverill, William Moore (Year 5), William Moore (Year 6), Ralph Moggs, Jasper Robinson, Yacine El Bachir and Ruairidh Macgregor Watson.

U10A FOOTBALL TEAM – KING’S HOUSE TOURNAMENT

The U10A football team travelled over to King’s House in Chiswick for their annual 7-a-side event. Again, the sun shone on the boys and their football reflected the weather. The boys managed to win four (including victory over Danes Hill, Hall Grove and Downsend Schools) and draw just one of their group matches – scoring some great goals and conceding none! Unsurprisingly, they qualified top of their group and as such were scheduled to play a strong Northcote Lodge team in the final. Despite some heroic effort, the team fell short by the smallest of margins (losing the game 0-1). Another brilliant day out for the Year 5 boys and they can be pleased and proud of their efforts.

HOUSE CAPTAINS

We were delighted to appoint our new House Captains and deputies in September. The boys will have the chance to support the Head of House in running House meetings and House events. The House Captains have already been busy updating the House noticeboards and have been involved in presenting to the whole of their House in House Meetings. A big part of their role is to work with the Head of House to ensure that each House has a full team for all events. They also have the responsibility of encouraging the younger members of their Houses in House competitions and hopefully the glory of collecting the trophy at the end of these events! Many congratulations to the following boys who were awarded with their House Captain or Vice-Captain badges:

OCTOBER RUGBY CAMP

The camp was open to all and it was wonderful to be able to welcome some younger brothers of SHS pupils and a number of boys from other schools. Mr Davison, said, ‘It was also great to be able to involve the wonderful experience and talent of rugby specialist teachers from other local schools. All the boys enjoyed the opportunity of developing new skills, and honing their existing talent in readiness for the forthcoming schools rugby season. It is always heartening to see so many young sports stars (from Years 1–8) in action during the holidays. Thank you to SHS for providing the wonderful facility, to the excellent coaches and to all the boys – great attitude in evidence throughout the week.’

YEAR 6 CONCERT

On a rainy Tuesday evening, the Pinsent Hall was brightened by the talented boys of Year 6 and their Concert. Featuring a wide range of ability and repertoire, the boys took to the stage for some outstanding solo performances. Boasting a varied programme featuring music from Bach and Kreisler to the more modern Tim Minchin and Nirvana, the concert really did have something for everyone. From piano to singing, strings to brass and everything in between, each of the boys seized the opportunity to perform in the Concert with both hands, with every boy performing at some stage in the evening. It was wonderful to see the range of musicianship on show, ranging from those at the start of their musical journey to those more experienced musicians. On both levels, the display was impressive. The Concert came to a stunning conclusion with all the Year 6 boys coming together to sing Karl Jenkins’ ‘Adiemus’ and Lewis Capaldi’s ‘Someone You Loved’. The singing in particular proved a real highlight to the evening, as the boys showed great commitment and filled their performances with gusto. Many congratulations to all the boys who took part in such a very well-polished evening’s entertainment, which certainly was very exciting considering the high level of their performances and young age. It was wonderful to see so many families in attendance, including siblings supporting their brothers. Thank you to all of the parents who continue to support their sons in their musical journeys. Special thanks also to our visiting music teachers who joined the evening; Mr Jani, Mr Nugent and Mr Thomas for their support and coaching of the boys; and to Mr Driscoll and Mr Lennon for their technical support.

SCHOOL OF ROCK – YEAR 7

The Pinsent Hall was transformed into a musical venue to rival the O2 for the Year 7 play as it was filled with the sound of guitars, drums, keyboards and some seriously cool singers. It was time for the Year 7 boys to be registered into the class of 2019 at ‘The School of Rock’. Mrs Cross, Head of Drama, said, ‘The boys not only acted but sang and danced, busting out some moves and even playing their own instruments. The enthusiasm and the commitment of the boys to a play with so many technical elements, as well as some seriously dodgy leopard-print trousers, was tremendous.’ The boys sang foot-stomping songs such as ‘Stick it to the Man’, ‘Listen’ and ‘School of Rock’. A huge thank-you to the Drama Prefects, Harry Gregor, Harry Ebbans, Hamish MacLennan, Joseph Stankovski and also members of the Theatre Club for helping out backstage. Well done to Saahan Kapoor for his attention-grabbing safety announcement and welcome to the parents. A special thank-you also has to go to the parents for the make-up and costumes, especially Ms Hunt who provided the blazers and ties, as well as Mr Jani, Mr Nugent and Mr Hill for providing back-up to the band, Mr Lennon for his work on sound and Mr Driscoll for the lighting. The bandleader of the whole production was the musical maestro Mr Thomas. Mr Doble said, ‘It was a wonderful way for the Year 7s to end such a busy half term and their medley encore will live on for some time; who could get those tunes out of our heads in the morning!’

SHS SKI RACING TRIAL

At the beginning of October, Shrewsbury House took over 50 boys to Sandown Park ski centre for the SHS Ski racing trial. There was some great racing on display, and what was particularly pleasing to see was the improvement from first run to second run for the majority of the boys. Of course, with racing comes the inevitable falls, but those that fell showed great resilience to get back on their skis and go again. Based on what the Sports Department saw, the future of SHS ski racing is looking very positive. Special mention goes to Barney Mitchell (Year 3), Jacob Jenkinson (Year 4), Lucas Siber (Year 6), Alfie Mitchell (Year 7) and Rafe Buxton (Year 8) for being fastest in their Year groups and Carter Jenkinson (Year 5) for being fastest overall. Thank you to the supporting staff who took the boys and to Mr Jenkinson (a current SHS parent) and the Sandown Ski centre staff for their help and patience.

HISTORY TALK – ‘AIRBORNE CHAPLAINS OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR’

Shrewsbury House was delighted to host a History talk entitled ‘Airborne Chaplains of the Second World War’ which was given by historian and writer Linda Parker. The talk was open to current SHS families and the wider community. This is clearly a very specialist area and came about because one Shrewsbury House Old boy, who graduated from here around 1924, was actually an Airborne Chaplain, attached to the 6th Airborne Division during this conflict. Linda gave a very interesting and in many places quite moving talk about this very specialist group of Chaplains and their experiences in the war. At the end, the large number of SHS boys present asked a series of technical questions about airborne troops and gliders. At the end Linda said she was very impressed by the boys and their questions.

GEOGRAPHY POSTCARD COMPETITION WINNERS

Towards the beginning of term, most Year 5 and 6 classes were set the task of producing a postcard featuring a holiday destination of their choice. This was to have a geographical theme, outlining the physical landscape, settlements and population, culture, food and key sites of interest. The results were truly magnificent and many are on display in the New Block corridor and in the Geography room. Miss Mallory, Head of Geography, said, ‘It was a very difficult task to select winners, as there were so many excellent entries.’ Congratulations to the eventual winners:

Year 6Winner: Leo RidgeRunners up: Christian Dickinson and Saahir Kapoor

It is pleasing also to report that for each year we have attended, the performance of the SHS boys has improved consistently.

MR DAVISON, DIRECTOR OF SPORT

SHS X-COUNTRY TEAM – SCHOOLS AT SOMERHILL EVENT

This event marks one of the highlights of the sporting calendar – a brilliantly run event in beautiful grounds and a very high level of competition. It is pleasing also to report that for each year we have attended, the performance of the SHS boys has improved consistently. The SHS U11 team were the first of our cohort to take the start and the top six scoring runners achieved a team score which placed them 3rd (of 14 teams)! This by some way is the best result at this event for SHS so far. This team was led by Zachary Elliott, who, despite a tumble at the start, raced to the bronze medal in typically courageous style. The SHS U13 team cannot have failed to be inspired, and they too posted an amazing result – 5th of the 11 competing teams. Finn Haldane proved the strongest on the day with a pride-worthy placing of 24th, but certainly worth noting was the consistency: all seven SHS U13 runners finished in the top 60 – a sterling effort.

Squad: Jasper Boulanger, Paul Ellinghorst, Philip Ellinghorst, Zachary Elliott, Freddie Fox, Finn Haldane, Henry Heilpern, Ernie Hill, Thomas Incledon, Hugh Jacobs, Ethan Koller, Tristan Mercer, Nicholas Murfin, Oliver Rees

HARVEST FESTIVAL

We were thrilled to see so many families in attendance at the Harvest Festival in St Andrew’s Church in Surbiton. The boys rose beautifully to the occasion, with all four choirs singing in the service. The junior choir performed a beautiful round called ‘Autumn’, while the Middle Choir added some spice to the service with the ‘Harvest Samba’. The Senior Voices gave a moving rendition of Louis Armstrong’s ‘What a Wonderful World’ and the SHS Singers gave a professional display of the music of John Rutter with ‘Give me Wings’ and the appropriate ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’. Mr Thomas commented on the high level of choral singing at the service across the school, with the hymns being sung with gusto and energy by all.

Mrs Macallister in her address spoke about the very essence of Harvest. She said that Harvest is about preparing, gratitude and abundance; celebrations the world over are about expressing thanks for the fruit of the land.

Congratulations to all the boys who were readers during the service; you delivered your passages with poise and emotion. Our readers were:

Year 3 ReadersOliver Hill, Ethan Luo, William Sayers and Elijah Spencer

Year 4 ReadersAdam Dizayee, Jack Doyle, Piers Parladorio and Arthur Tolson

A sincere thank-you to all of the families who were so generous in their donations of food. The much-needed food supplies were very gratefully received by the Kingston and Elmbridge Food Banks and the Fircroft Trust and will go to help local families in need. Thank you to Mrs Gregor, Mrs Kapoor, Mrs Malet de Carteret and Mrs Kellah-Nash for organising and displaying the food in St Andrew’s Church. We are similarly grateful for the £920 received as donations at the end of the service, which will go to the excellent work that the Kingston Churches Action on Homelessness provides to people in real need in the Kingston area.

Thank you to Arran Blevins, Rafe Buxton, Jake Adams, Oliver Casebourne and Kiran Sagoo for welcoming our parents and guests and for supporting the retiring collection.

A sincere thank-you to all of the families who were so generous in their donations of food.

YEAR 6 ESB EXAMS

The boys in Year 6 worked incredibly hard preparing for their ESB ‘Oral Skills for School Interviews’ exam. The exam is part of the preparation for the real-life interviews for their next schools. It consists of four parts: a four-minute personal introduction to share their interests and talents, a three-minute presentation on the school to which they are applying, a group question and answer section and, finally, a five-minute interview with the examiner. Despite some nerves, the boys all performed brilliantly and the examiners were very complimentary about their effort and engagement. The boys all achieved a Merit or above and we are very proud of their efforts. Congratulations to all of the boys.

KING’S COLLEGE JUNIOR SCHOOL 6-A-SIDE FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

The U8 A and B team played in the KCJS 6-a-side tournament on the Friday before half term. The A team performed well, growing in confidence as the day went on and passing the ball around very well indeed. The boys scored some excellent goals and showed a wonderful team spirit. They were unfortunate to be knocked out on penalties in the quarter-finals. The B team were magnificent all day. They competed superbly in an A team tournament and never gave up, despite some tough fixtures. The highlight of their day was a 1-0 victory against Dulwich, but their attitude was outstanding all day. Very well done to all of the boys who represented the school so well.

AUTHOR VISIT – CONN IGGULDEN

For weeks, the excitement had been building (not just with the boys but with the teachers, too!) and finally the big day was upon us: author Conn Iggulden arrived at SHS to talk to the boys in Years 5–8. Author of ‘The Dangerous Book for Boys’, a beloved handbook of boys everywhere, Conn gave us a glimpse of his new release, ‘The Double Dangerous Book for Boys’. He entertained his audience with tales from his father’s experiences in WWII (ask the boys about the French spy!) and shared little-known information about Julius Caesar. The boys have proclaimed it the best author visit ever!

HOUSE WRITING COMPETITION

Over the summer, the boys were given the opportunity to write a story or poem to enter into the House Writing Competition. There were a record number of entries, which were of a very high standard. Special mention to Alexander Senny (Year 5) for his beautiful butterfly illustrations and Jago Young (Year 5) for his recreation of the picture prompt in a box. The overall winners were Nelson House and the individual winners were:

Year 3: Aneesh Agrawal (Nelson)Year 4: Max Snead (Nelson)Year 5: Alexander Woodford (Grenville)Year 6: Josh Jacobs (Drake)Year 7: Oliver Hussey (Nelson)Year 8: Max Moore (Raleigh)

HOUSE FOOTBALL

This is always a highly anticipated occasion, due in part to the importance of giving all boys a chance to ‘blow off ’ some of the exam-week steam. Although the weather wasn’t particularly kind, it is testimony to the boys, staff and parents that the whole programme was completed (just!). These efforts came to the fore when Mr Doble presented the House Year group winning teams (and those boys who were identified as displaying excellent sportsmanship) with medals in celebration of their efforts and values. The anticipation, joy and celebration of all the boys in the school was a wonderful start to a cold Wednesday morning. Congratulations to Drake House, who took the overall House Football title. Very well done to the following boys who were awarded medals in recognition of their sportsmanship on the day:

Michael Tribelhorn (Year 3), Arun Stewart (Year 4), Jacob Boamah (Year 4), Ayush Agrawal (Year 5), Troy Pepper (Year 5), Oliver Ross (Year 5), Jaeden Ford (Year 5), Dilan Guganeswaran (Year 6), Benjamin Stone (Year 6), Harry Duffy (Year 7), Freddie Mundell (Year 7), Rufus White (Year 8)

U9A FOOTBALL AT THE ROYAL RUSSELL TOURNAMENT

Well done to the Year 4 U9A team who made the trip to SE London for the Royal Russell School event. The chance to play in eight matches in one morning is one not to be missed and this tournament always provides stiff but friendly competition and the SHS team certainly made the most of it. The boys showed great spirit throughout the morning and they recorded some memorable performances. These led to victories over the hosts, Elmhurst and Northcote Lodge along the way, and lessons learned in victory and defeat. Thanks to Royal Russell School for the event and well done to all the Year 4 boys.

WELLINGTON COLLEGE RUGBY FESTIVAL

The Shrewsbury House 1st XIII performed at the Wellington College Festival for what was their first outing of the rugby season. They were excited to come together and showcase their raw talent. The team acquitted themselves very well despite the cold conditions in leafy Berkshire and worked well together across the five games. Some rampaging runs from a very powerful Jake Adams and some fierce tackles from Ben Moffatt were highlights of the day. An exciting start for the senior team and we look forward to a promising season ahead.

GEOGRAPHY TRIP TO ICELAND

Miss Mallory, Head of Geography, reflects on the trip: ‘An intrepid group of 32 boys and 5 members of staff set out in mid-October for the first Shrewsbury House trip to Iceland “Land of Fire and Ice”. The main focus was to experience first-hand the landscapes created at a constructive plate boundary and the unique lifestyle and culture of the people living on this volcanic island.

A very excited group of boys took off from London Heathrow care of Icelandair to land just a few hours later at Keflavik airport. On our transfer to Reykjavik we walked through the steaming mudpools of Gunnuhver. The smell of rotting fish left a lot to be desired, though it was worth it to witness the surprisingly active steam vent emitting a noxious cloud some 30 metres into the air. The boys then had the opportunity of standing on the bridge between the continents, spanning the new land created as the Eurasian and North American plates move apart 2 cm every year. The sun was close to setting as we looked out to sea to the distant island of Eldey and lamented the extinction of the Great Auk!

Over the next three days the boys had an action-packed itinerary. They scaled glaciers with crampons, drinking fresh water from glacial streams and wielding ice axes! We donned hard hats and ventured down into the lava tube caves and experienced true darkness as we all turned off our helmet lights deep underground. The boys thoroughly enjoyed the night

swimming in geothermally heated pools in Reykjavik and also at the Secret Lagoon with its natural hot springs and bathing pool. It was also fascinating to visit the geothermal power station at Hellsheidi and understand the science behind the process. The earthquake simulator was certainly an experience, which left some of us quite literally screaming in terror (mentioning no names!).

The weather was perfect for trekking through the Thingvellir National Park and visiting the black basaltic cliffs and caves at Reynishverfi. It was a spectacular sight to walk behind the waterfalls at Seljanlandfoss, where water cascades over 60 metres from a former sea cliff. We drove across the plains at the foot of the famous Eyjafjallajökull volcano and visited the interactive Volcano and Earthquake Centre. There were many tales of the Icelandic folklore and our guide had an excellent knowledge of the changing economy and industry in the country. Geysir was very active and this spouting hot spring did not disappoint, shooting water every 5–6 minutes, creating some fabulous photo opportunities. It also had a superb gift shop and the boys were keen to offload their Icelandic krona!

We may have only seen the Northern lights in our dreams, but we were certainly left with a smile on our faces as we returned from such a wonderful trip. Many thanks to both staff and boys for a truly memorable trip.’

BARNARDO’S YOUNG SUPPORTERS CONCERT

The SHS Singers journeyed to the Royal Albert Hall to prepare to sing in the Barnardo’s Young Supporters Concert in aid of the children’s charity. The choir, consisting of 20 boys from Shrewsbury House, joined over 1000 other school children for an event which was overseen by professional choral conductors Douglas Coombes MBE and Carol Lindsay-Douglas. A wide range of music was sung throughout the day, including British folk songs, Disney classics and a moving piece about saving the planet from the threat of global warming; a very relevant subject matter. The concert concluded with a rousing version of ‘Land of Hope and Glory’, accompanied by a full orchestra and organ with flags waving high and proud. Mr Thomas commented on the boys’ professionalism throughout the day and of how well they handled the big occasion. Many thanks to all of the families who travelled to the Royal Albert Hall to support the SHS Singers at such a special event.

REMEMBRANCE ASSEMBLY

Each year SHS holds a special Assembly to remember the men and women who have fallen in warfare. We impress upon the boys the significance of Remembrance Day, particularly as our school community lost so many past pupils and teachers during WWI and WWII. As the boys arrived in silence, Head Boy, Thomas Incledon, and Deputy Head Boys, George Hennessy and Ben Moffatt, read out the ‘final unanswered roll call’ of the 86 SHS former pupils and staff who went off to war and never returned. We asked staff and boys to pause for a moment to consider those members of the SHS community who made the ultimate sacrifice. Mr Eaves led the proceedings and we all listened to Thomas Incledon read ‘In Flanders Fields’ by John McCrae. Before the two-minute silence, Rafe Buxton played the Last Post. House Captains Tom Hatcher, Charlie Babb, William Ashworth and Oliver Casebourne then joined Mr Doble to lay the wreath adjacent to the SHS War Memorial.

Prior to the school Assembly, Thomas Incledon, George Hennessy and Ben Moffatt travelled to the Royal Star and Garter to present a wreath of poppies on behalf of Shrewsbury House. The boys had the chance to meet the Chairman of the local branch of the Royal British Legion as well as some of the residents, who spoke of their experiences of war and memories of school days. The residents were thrilled to see their visitors and to receive the wreath from them, and the boys learned a lot from the remarkable stories.

U8A AND U8B AT THE CUMNOR HOUSE TOURNAMENT

The U8A and U8B teams visited Cumnor House on a very wet and windy Friday. Against some stern opposition (and heavy-going weather conditions) the boys battled valiantly to represent the school with pride. The U8B team played well and fought hard, and Wilfred Heilpern’s superbly taken penalty and Charlie Fox’s impressive finish against Elmhurst were certainly highlights. The U8A team were unfortunate, with two deflections costing us wins against Cranmore and Elmhust, but Benjamin Mudry’s excellent ‘Panenka’ ensured that we qualified for the Silver Plate final against Hawthorns. Jonty Raes’s long-range effort was the deciding blow and ensured that the team left with winners’ certificates! A special tribute to Marcus Santinon, whose outstanding goalkeeping ensured he was awarded ‘Goalkeeper of the Tournament’ by the competition’s referees.

Squad: Charles Brain, Joshua Brown, Emmanuel Diri, Charlie Fox, Zane Galaun, Wilfred Heilpern, Avi Johal, Simon Morris, Benjamin Mudry, Jonty Rae, Rory Reynolds, George Russell, Kevin Ruo and Marcus Santinon.

SWIMMING GALA

It is always a great experience supporting our young swimmers in friendly events. Our thanks to Parkside School for the invitation to join their event and pitch the strongest of our Year 4 and Year 5 swimmers against those from Parkside, Danes Hill and The Hawthorns Schools. It is wonderful to report back on a fantastic victory! The young SHS team took the lead in the competition from the first race and never looked back. They actually seemed to grow in confidence as the evening progressed. Very well done to the boys – a truly wonderful effort and overall performance!

ECO COMMITTEE

The Eco Committee were joined by Mr Doble, Mrs Hand (Director of Communication & Compliance), Mr Eaves (Head of Pastoral Care) and Miss Raggett (Head of Trust Facilities) for a meeting over lunch in the Irving Room at the beginning of November. Aside from the delicious lunch laid on by the catering team, there was lengthy discussion about the action plan to gain Eco Status at the school and the initiatives the school can start. Each Year group will be taking on responsibility for different aspects of our work, from reducing waste in the Dining Hall to boosting the ‘switch and save’ scheme and maximising biodiversity in green spaces around the school grounds. It was another step in gaining momentum for change to embrace a more sustainable future.

Later in the month the Eco Committee launched the ‘Bottle Top Challenge’. This was a House competition in which boys were encouraged to collect as many milk bottle tops as possible, which could then be recycled as flexible plastic surfaces for play areas. The company will make a donation for each batch of plastic bottle tops towards the Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity. The boys were also asked in tutor sessions to bring in as many plastic milk bottles tops as possible. The idea was to reduce plastic and make a worthwhile contribution to charity at the same time. The Eco Committee also identified fumes from idling car engines as an area that they wanted to reduce during school pick-up. Therefore, members of the Eco Committee wore green fluorescent jackets during pick up to remind parents of this.

Aside from the delicious lunch laid on by the catering team, there was lengthy discussion about the action plan to gain Eco Status at the school and the initiatives the school can start.

FUTURE SCHOOLS’ EVENING

A large number of parents joined Mr Doble to hear Dr Tim Hands, Headmaster of Winchester College, and Professor Mark Bailey, High Master of St Paul’s School, discuss senior school entry processes and key considerations when approaching the range of prospective senior schools. As well as hosting these internationally renowned and experienced educationists, we were also delighted to welcome back two immediate past SHS parents, Mrs Brooks and Mrs Clarke. The speakers each addressed the families in attendance and shared their thoughts and personal experiences. Excellent advice was provided on how to manage and look to get the best from what can be quite a taxing journey. Certainly, their comments greatly assuaged doubts and informed the engaged gathering. We are hugely grateful to our speakers for joining us and for offering their insights and for providing advice on how to begin and benefit from the senior school search and application processes.

CHRISTMAS CARD COMPETITION

In Assembly, Mr Doble was delighted to present Alexander Senny (Year 5) with the first 2019 SHS Christmas card, with his artwork adorning the front. Alexander painted a beautiful robin using oil paints and was the worthy winner. Congratulations Alexander!

HEADMASTER’S COMMENDATION

Mr Doble was thrilled to award Rafe Buxton (Year 8) with a Headmaster’s Commendation in Assembly for ‘marvellous trumpet playing across the Trust during the Remembrance Day events’. We were pleased to welcome Mrs Buxton to Assembly to witness the presentation of the certificate. Well done Rafe!

We are hugely grateful to our speakers for joining us and for offering their insights and for providing advice on how to begin and benefit from the senior school search and application processes.

YEAR 7 CONCERT

The parents and staff of the Year 7 boys were treated to a musical masterclass at the Year 7 concert. With over half the year performing solos at the event, it promised to have something for everyone, ranging from Grovlez to Coldplay, and from Mozart to Queens of the Stone Age.

The ‘Under 12 Music A Team’ truly delivered with a range of complex and enjoyable performances across the musical spectrum. With many boys playing multiple instruments to an incredibly high standard, the musical abilities of Year 7 did not disappoint. It was a testament to the boys that the concert was a healthy length. Had the audience been a paying one, they would certainly have had their money’s worth!

Particular highlights of the evening included Kit Lockard’s excellent drum playing to a rock classic, Ralph Moggs’ technical brilliance on the piano, Jimmy Sinclair’s performance of The Eagles’ ‘Hotel California’, in which he played and sang, and James Bell’s moving Saxophone ‘Romance’ by Binge. Alfie Mitchell showed real musicality in his performance of Stamford’s ‘Intermezzo’ and Ben Clarke ended the concert with the energetic ‘Acrobat’.

The evening was capped off with the whole Year group singing a touching version of ‘Yellow’ by Coldplay. This was followed by a reprise of the Closing Medley from the Year 7 play, which featured songs by Led Zeppelin, Bon Jovi and The Rolling Stones. The boys were in great voice as they were backed by the house band of Mr Jani, Mr Nugent and Mr Thomas.

Many congratulations must go to the boys of Year 7 for their commitment and the passion displayed in the concert. So soon after an exam week and a half term, it was an impressive achievement indeed. Many thanks must also go to the Year 8 music prefects, Eric Taylor, Oliver Casebourne and Noah Horne, and the staff who supported the event. Finally, thank you also to all of the parents who have supported their sons with their instruments and singing.

CAROL SERVICE PROGRAMME ARTWORK

Mr Doble revealed the beautiful artwork that appeared in our annual Christmas Carol Service programme the week before the event. Well done to Harry Duffy (Year 7), Alexander Das Wermes (Year 4) and Felix Worden (Year 4) for producing such lovely artwork!

TOP 50 PREP SCHOOLS IN CRICKET

Once again, it was an honour and a privilege to be judged as one of the UK’s top 50 Prep and Junior Schools in cricket by The Cricketer magazine. Mr Doble, said, ‘Our inclusion in The Cricketer Schools Guide 2020 is a testament to the extraordinary coaches at SHS. Well done team!’

YEAR 3 CHRISTMAS JOURNEY

Year 3 visited The King’s Centre in Chessington to experience the ‘Christmas Journey’. The boys saw the Christmas story come to life by visiting and talking to Mary, the Three Wise Men before they arrived at the stable in Bethlehem. Year 3 had the opportunity to share and discuss what Christmas means to them in the ‘Thinking Zone’, as well as to participate in some craft activities. Miss Barclay, Head of Year 3, said, ‘The boys asked some interesting questions and were polite and well behaved throughout their visit – well done Year 3.’

YEAR 3 TRIP TO THE TATE MODERN

Year 3 embarked on an exciting trip to London to visit the Tate Modern. The boys enjoyed interactive guided tours and impressed the guides with their artistic knowledge and use of language when discussing works of art. Mrs Kheir, Head of Art, said, ‘We saw many famous pieces of work by artists such as Picasso, Mondrian, Salvador Dali and Kandinsky, along with many modern contemporary artists. The boys thoroughly enjoyed their experience and slipped into the role as budding art critics very comfortably. I would like to thank the boys and the accompanying staff members for ensuring a very successful and inspirational day out for all.’

NATIONAL SCIENCE QUIZ CHALLENGE

On 20th November, two teams of Year 5 and 6 boys competed in the National Science Quiz Challenge. All of the boys in those Year groups enjoyed the opportunity to take part in the first round at school during tutor time in exam week. The afternoon started well with the boys using their knowledge as well as a whole team strategy to maximise their points. Every question was multiple choice and the boys were able to use a process of elimination at times when they weren’t sure of the answer, splitting their votes to guarantee some were correct. By midway there was everything to play for, with the leader board and positions constantly changing. The range of questions enabled every boy to participate well: identification of insects, plants, dinosaurs and bones; a wander through stars, planets and space missions; as well as inventors and scientists such as Louis Pasteur, Dmitri Mendeleev, Tim Berners-Lee, Wilhelm Röntgen and Nikola Tesla.

All of the boys thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to participate. Well done to the following:

Year 5 Ayush Agrawal, Oliver Norris, Thomas Byrne, Adam Davies.

Year 6: Shayan Khurshid, Conrad Lai, Lucas Cornelsen, Oscar Iannotti

IMAD VISIT

The School welcomed Mr Nick Green from the Institute for Music and Indigenous Arts Development (IMAD). Founded in 2007, IMAD is an NPO operating in disadvantaged areas in and around Cape Town, South Africa. IMAD has two focus areas: first, teaching primary school children to play an instrument (saxophone, trumpet, trombone, keyboards, guitar, bass guitar or drums) and to play in ensembles; and second, providing these youngsters with the opportunity to graduate to the Little Giants Youth Band, to study at the UCT College of Music and elsewhere, and to become successful professional musicians. Over the years, SHS has been delighted to support IMAD and we have donated instruments to this worthy charity. This time Mr Green was able to collect eight trumpets and seven trombones, which he will have shipped back to Cape Town. Many thanks to Mr Lennon for co-ordinating the donations.

ROWING REGATTA

Much excitement was in evidence on the way to Walton Rowing Club (WRC) as the boys mentally prepared for the first regatta of the year. Hosted by Cranmore School and involving boys from Cranmore, SHS, Danes Hill and the Duke of Kent schools, it was certainly an event that was eagerly anticipated. They raced a short course (in a heavy flow) in coxed quads (sculling). The course was set for around 500 m, but with the fast flow and relatively inexperienced rowers the boys raced a somewhat shorter race! Much was learned in the early exchanges about the importance of coxing (steering!) and remaining relaxed even in the heart of the race. A great deal of progress was made over the latter races and it was wonderful to put together ‘mixed’ crews containing boys from three of the four schools. Our thanks to Cranmore School, Walton Rowing Club and the volunteer parents who helped keep everyone warm with sausage rolls and hot chocolate! Well done to all involved.

HISTORY TRIP TO THE MARY ROSE MUSEUM

Mr Smart, Head of History, reports: ‘At the beginning of December the History department took Year 8 to Portsmouth to visit the Mary Rose Museum. The museum staff in the Education Centre know our boys are very knowledgeable, and so staff at the museum do challenge them with their History and Latin. In our two groups we rotated through three activities; in one we all handled Tudor artefacts and learned of their significance to the ship and to wider Tudor society; in another we toured the actual museum, stepping through an airlock to enter the carefully controlled atmosphere of the final resting place of Henry’s flagship; and lastly, through a bit of teamwork, we all learned how to crew a Tudor cannon, which the boys thoroughly enjoyed.’

HOUSE QUIZ

A firm favourite in the school calendar is the House Quiz, and the boys were very vocal in terms of supporting their Houses! All the boys representing their House proved to be superb quizzers, but the eventual Quiz Masters 2019 were Drake. Well done to all who took part.

ANIMAL FOOTBALL

Mr Davison, Director of Sport, reports: ‘The Year 3 U8 Leopard, Lion, Tiger and Panther football teams represent a new initiative in the delivery of our sport of which we are very proud – that of waving goodbye to “bottom” teams for the younger boys and delivering mixed-ability “animal” groups. There is always a nervousness around change and taking on a new approach, but our sense (of course anecdotally and subjectively) is that it has been a rousing success. The natural default of the boys of mixed sporting abilities to support each other in friendly competition has certainly been a highlight of the football season. This approach has certainly helped further embed some of the core values that we hold dear.’

SENIOR RUGBY AT CALDICOTT

The senior boys enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of high level competition at Caldicott School. After a tough start playing St Paul’s School the previous week, the players enjoyed a mini triangular against Northcote and Caldicott. Ninety boys from Years 7 & 8 across the senior sides played two matches each in what turned out to be an excellent day of rugby. The highlight of the day was to see how much the teams had clearly improved across the board in just one week. Irrespective of the material results, which were impressive, all involved can take great pride in the progress made at this event.

U11A RUGBY TEAM AT THE DANES HILL EVENT

The U11A rugby team got their season under way by playing in Danes Hill Festival for the boys’ first matches of the season. They played some outstanding rugby and improved as the day went on. After a slow start against Cranmore, Zachary Elliot scored a last-minute try to secure a win. The SHS team then went on and played Cumnor House, St George’s Weybridge, Dulwich College and Trinity, with some strong defence from Max Stuttard and evasive running from Rayan Hussain and Philip Ellinghorst. The final two games provided tough opposition, but the team showed excellent determination and teamwork. Congratulations to Rayan Hussain, who won our ‘Player of the Tournament’. Overall a great start to the U11A rugby team’s season.

The boys in Years 5 and 6 took part in the National Primary Maths Challenge during the November examinations week. In Year 5, one pupil achieved a Gold certificate, while six Golds were awarded to Year 6 boys. These challenges are a really fitting way of preparing for external assessments through problem-solving Maths. Congratulations to all of the boys who took part, especially the certificate winners.

CAROL SERVICE

What a joy it was to have so many families join us to celebrate one of the most wonderful evenings of the year, within the glorious setting of Epsom College Chapel. Our Carol Service featured all four of the school’s choirs and began with a clear and stirring solo verse of ‘Once in Royal David’s City’, sung so impressively by Hari Stewart. This was followed by a lovely performance of ‘Bright Star’ by the Junior Choir. The Middle School Choir sang ‘Sing, Sing for Christ is Born’ – a complex yet beautiful round. The SHS Singers were on fine form, performing a number of pieces in collaboration with the Senior Voices, including ‘Silent Night’ and ‘Mary, Did You Know?’ They rounded off the evening with a moving rendition of John Taverner’s ‘The Lamb’, producing a rare level of choral collaboration and sound. The Service was brought together by the wonderful congregational singing led by all the boys of the school and which featured a professional brass group including trumpeter Rafe Buxton and, on the trombone, Ben Clarke.

The readers read with confidence and clarity. Well done to the following boys: Christian Dickinson, Connor Lloyd, Jasper Cole, Alex Simpson, Simon Morris, Aiden Zhang, Leo Foulger, Taysir Sharaf, Freddy Heaton, Luke Williams, Eric Taylor, Harry Love, George Hennessy, Christy Moore and Nicholas Murfin.

Thank you also to Jed Lloyd (candle), Thomas Incledon (close & Order of Service), George Hennessy (Order of Service), Ben Moffatt (Order of Service) and to all of the Prefects who assisted on the evening. We are delighted to announce that £1815 was raised in the retiring collection, which will be split between Momentum Children’s Charity and SPEAR, a local charity that works with the homeless. Thank you all for your very generous donations.

CAREERS TALK REPORT

As part of our ongoing careers programme, we were delighted to welcome Sarah Butler, the Director of Higher Education and Careers at Reed’s School, to present to the boys on the changing landscape of careers. For our Year 6 boys, this was very much an introduction to the world of work, while, for the Year 7 and Year 8 boys, the talk continued to consolidate their thinking about choices that they may make in the near future. Mrs Butler looked at critical thinking, initiative, collaboration, communication, agility and curiosity individually, and gave clear examples for each skill. This links to our work within Drama and Problem-Based Learning as well as our wider school initiatives focusing on Intellectual Characteristics and being Future Smart. The boys were fascinated by the focus on the future of AI and robotics as well as their threat to jobs as we know them.

SHS SINGERS AT CARE & NURSING HOMES

Mr Thomas, Director of Music, took the SHS Singers to perform Christmas Carols for the residents at Milverton Nursing Home and Langley Court Care Home and both the boys and the residents thoroughly enjoyed it! Well done to all of the boys who performed and helped to spread some Christmas joy in the local community.

LIFEBOAT COLLECTION

Josh Jacobs (Year 6) reports: ‘At the end of last term all of Year 6 handed in jam jar pots full of 5p pieces or other amounts for the RNLI fundraising scheme. Robert Richards brought in this idea after a visit to Rhosneigr in Wales where he came up with the idea of collecting jars after seeing the life-saving equipment that it could buy for the volunteers. Well done to all the boys for helping to raise a whopping £194.58! They should be very proud of their efforts. We hope that we can double this in our next charity event for the RNLI.’

HOUSE MUSIC COMPETITION

On the last week of term, all the boys gathered in the Pinsent Hall for the annual House Music Competition. With 45 boys entering the competition at the semi-final stage, the final consisted of 18 of the finest musicians the school has to offer. This year’s contest was of a particularly high standard, with a number of boys playing pieces from above Grade 5 standard. The adjudicator for the competition was Mr David Milsted, Head of Woodwind at Oundle School. He gave a wonderful summary of the afternoon, commenting on the boys’ performance practice and high levels of musicianship. Congratulations to the winner Conrad Lai, second place Ben Clarke and third place James Bell. It was a wonderful afternoon of high-quality music.

YEAR 3 PLAY – ‘SANTA SINGS THE BLUES’

Year 3 treated us to a marvellous brace of performances, their first at SHS. We watched as the elves and two wonderful Italian voice coaches helped Santa learn to sing. Santa discovered his ‘rockabilly’ style and travelled on a whirlwind tour as Willy Mannilli. All the boys worked extremely hard and it is difficult to single out any one performance. The passengers in the travel scenes had to contend with bad weather, naughty boys and TV film crews. The singing was wonderful, with some quite superb solos. Thank you, Year 3, for uplifting performances that brought so many smiles throughout the entire performance. Finally, thank you so much to the Year 3 English team for their help and support.
