The CAD planning took about 30 hours. So far I have used 2 days building and got the main table torsion box and base structure finished.

I was able to finish the torsion box in a day, took about 10 hours total. There are 108 (hand drilled) holes with T-nuts for workpiecefastening.

Second day I had lots of other stuff to do besides this, but managed to build the base structure. I can only hope those wheels can take theweight of the finished machine which will be about 165kg.

Some of the plans I made with solidworks, they will be available for free later on.

This is the current situation, it was quite hard to maneuver these big objects in such a cramped space.

The project will move much slower from now on as I can only work on it at weekends. The next step will be making the table legs and thenI can move on to building the gantry pieces. I can probably finish one component / weekend so it can take up to two months or so to finishthe build.

Managed to build the table support structures today, took about 4 and half hours total.

Parts ready for assembly

First one fully assembled.

Assembling the second one, this time I remembered to take pictures. Evertyhing is held together by basic wood glue and brad nails, usedabout 100 of them today.

Current situation, these will be permanently mounted to the table bottom with screws during the final assembly.

Next weekend I can hopefully build both gantry sides. The main goal will be to finish the whole machine before christmas.

I got the gantry sides built last friday, took about 5 and a half hours.

All the parts ready for assembly. T-nuts will be used to assemble & fasten the gantry together.

As always, everything is held together by wood glue and brad nails. I bought 700 brad nails when I began this project and have less than50 left. I've also used about half a liter of glue.

Next weekend I will build the lower and upper horizontal gantry structures. This project is going well! :)

I was able to finish the remaining torsion box structural parts last weekend. It took about 4 and a half hous to make the horizontal gantrypieces, and 5 hours or so to make those other pieces with my current diy cnc (lots of time used to set-up, sanding etc.)

Simple method for quickly cutting pieces of exactly same length

This weekend progress was slow as I made some smaller x-gantry parts and also had to fix some things on my cnc 1. Also got the tableassembled, it is finally standing on it's own feet and weights about 100kg. About 6 hours total this time.

It's pretty massive, the table surface is 90cm from the floor (ergonomic working height when standing)

This weekend I was able to assemble the x and y axis. There are now only a handful of smaller parts missing (motor & router mounts, leadscrew nuts etc.) I will order the leadscrews next week. About 7 hours total this time.

A second plate was glued over this one to add stiffness. This does trap the bolts to the pockets and the blocks can't be taken off withouttearing them apart.

Using a dial gauge to measure the flatness & straightness of the table surface in reference to the axis plane.

The dial gauge has resolution of 10 micrometers and one millimeter makes the needle turn a full rotation. The table has less than 1mmvariation and by some adjustements I can probably decrease that to less than half a millimeter.

Long time since last update. I got the machine running just before christmas, It's still far from "finished" thought! I have worked on theproject for about 35hours since the last update!

Here is a video of the assembled machine running!

The ballscrews had too tight fittings for the bearings so I had to sand them a little using this kind of jig:

The X-axis ballscrew has a huge nut.

The machine is now assembled and I have cut some parts with it.

The old machine's base works well as a work table.

Long time since last update. I haven't had much time to work on the machine so the progress had been slow.

I finally got the X axis running with both motors. I had some problems with vibration but got those pretty much solved by re-aligning the X-ballscrew.

The electronics are now housed in this box mounted on the side of the machine.

I have also added homing switches for the Y and X axis. These are used to set the zero points for the coordinate system.

This touch plate is used to zero the Z axis. The machine will run slowly downward until the tool touches the plate and completes the circuit.

28.12.2010 12:06 Yariko Nice :) Now just sitting back and waiting that you pop some sick mods :P

28.11.2010 15:34 metalfusion Yes, the drawings will be freely available soon. (I have changed some things duringthe build) The linear rails are from ebay seller linearmotionbearings2008. The totalcost to build this machine from scratch would be about 1000 euros or so, but it alsotakes maybe 30-50 hours of work to build.

23.11.2010 16:54 Teppis And where you got those slide rails?, (mhmh, why does this look like that I amwriting by using my facebook account even I am logged with atm account, only onlive shows facebook logo and after that number 1)

23.11.2010 16:53 Teppis Neat. How much you ask for it? ;). Have you somekind drawings from that?, Couldyou share them when you have completed that one? :)

21.11.2010 21:55 dyyz lol

21.11.2010 12:13 metalfusion It is my old Peugeot Speedfight 1 LC '97 It has electrical problems and now servesas a cable holder :D

21.11.2010 12:06 dyyz http://allthemods.com/img/04/7471.jpg whats the scooter on background?

07.11.2010 17:38 Jipa Already looks good.

31.10.2010 08:04 metalfusion Well, the first one has several shortcomings: 1. The structure is not very rigid whichforces me to keep the cutting forces to minimum (cutting takes longer) 2. It hassome parts that will wear out pretty quickly, mainly the slides. 3. It's not veryreliable, small mechanical failures are very common. 4. The table and cutting planesare not parallel and it can't be adjusted. 5. It lacks an adequate method forworkpiece fastening. I'm currently using screws which leave marks in the routertable surface. All these problems have been addressed in the design of this newmachine.

31.10.2010 03:15 WeTzQ what's wrong with the first one? or just making it bigger and better this time?

22.10.2010 22:32 metalfusion It will be the same as on my current router: Co/Tech 2000W

22.10.2010 22:24 Javerh Looks like a nice design for the base frame. What router are you planning on usingas a spindle?

22.10.2010 20:08 Yariko Ooo... Poor tiny wheels :( Damn I want to start my DIY CNC too but I am just solazy :D
