I’m sure Louie is well into coordinating volunteers from our Council to help those two days, but if you haven’t been called and you would like to help out in this most worthy effort, please give him a call. Thanks to all who have volunteered in the past and for those who have agreed to volunteer for this year’s ID Drive as well. The September General Membership Council Meeting will be prefaced with a Steak Fry at 4:30 PM to bring our membership together for some fun and fellowship. DEACON’S QUESTION BOX What Exactly is Ordinary Time? Many of you may remember a time when the Church calendar did not have a period of time calledOrdinary Time. Prior to 1969, the two periods we now call Ordinary Time were called the ‘Season after Epiphany’ and the ‘Season after Pentecost’.

In 1969, in response to the refreshing of the Church’s liturgy called for by the Second Vatican Council, this term was introduced. The term is usednot because the time is ‘ordinary’ but because the weeks are ordered. The Latin word from which ordinary is derived is ordinalis which refers to numbers that are in series. Ordinalis is derived from the Latin word ordo which is the root of our word order.

Ordinary Time is the ordered, normal life of the Church. It is the time we live when we are not in the periods of feasting at Christmas and Easter or in severe penance as we are in Advent and Lent. Ordinary Time is that time we focus on our own everyday spiritual life as we live in watchfulness and expectation of the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

If we are to become more mature in our faith an spiritual life, we must come down from the high points of the year that occur at Easter and Christmas and rise from the more somber periods ofthe year that we call Advent and Lent. We must have a time when we can quietly listen to the

Page 4: ALLOUEZ ABSTRACTS Sept 2013kofc658.org/site/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/... · ALLOUEZ COUNCIL 658, K OF C Published Monthly SEPTEMBER, 2013 ROCK ISLAND, IL VOL XXXIII, No. 9 GRAND

teachings of Christ and His Church, consider them quietly, and embrace them in our spirit and in our life. As one author put it, we ‘must descend the great mountain peaks of Easter and Christmas in order to "pasture" in the vast verdant meadows of tempus per annum, or Ordinary Time.

It is in that time where we decide if we are actively living for Heaven or actively living to avoid Hell. These are radically different perspectives. The second one is full of risks. Living to avoid Hell implies we are doing just enough to get by. But only God knows if that will be enough to purify and prepare out Spirit to be with Him forever. Actively living to go to Heaven is a much safer approach.

When we live for Heaven, we are automatically avoiding all things that could tempt usaway from God. We are also actively working for Heaven on Earth in the way that Jesus has called us.We get over half of every year to focus on this. Let’s use this time wisely.

Feel free to drop me a question for this column. Questions may be dropped off on the head table at a Council Meeting or sent via email to Deacon RUSS SWIM, Assistant Chaplain, [email protected], phone 786-3097.

TOOTSIE ROLL TIME IN THE CITYWe are gearing up for the 44th Annual

Intellectual Disabilities Drive which takes place on 9/20 – 21 that covers six locations in Rock Island and two locations (Hy-Vee & Walgreen’s) on 7th street in Moline. Sorry to report that Jewel-Osco is now under new ownership with a corporate policy of “no fundraising” for any organization at their stores. We hope that you and your family and friends will spread the word (face-book too) to let Jewel-Osco know that their new policy will hurt funding for many communities throughout Illinois. Our Brother Knights in Moline have given us permission to work Walgreen’s Moline in their place to try and make up for the loss of funds from Jewel-Osco on 1st street Moline.

I am currently scheduling the volunteers from the organizations that we support with the funds from the drive. FRED LUCKENBILL and I are also planning and working on the direct donation part of the Drive. I will probably start calling our membership shortly after Labor Day to fill the remaining open slots. We will be doing the best we can to make up for the short-fall of funds from losing the Jewel-Osco store. The eight organizations that we support, who help those with Intellectual Disabilities, had a tough time last year and this year, as you may assume, is much worse. They need your help! Let’s do this together for our community. Thank you.

DINING BOOKS - NEW RESTAURANTS ADDED

Dining Books will again be available to Members of the Council, Assembly and Auxiliary Members. Books will continue to cost only $35.00 but 12 new restaurants have been added including The Boat House, Culvers, Denny's and The Legends Bar & Grill bringing the total number available to 125. The Council or the Assembly (other than for the Allouez members) and the Ladies Auxiliary will receive $10 from each book purchased by one of their Members. Current 2012-13 Books are good until October 31, 2013. However, the new 2013-14 books may be used as soon as purchased and do not expire until October 31, 2014 or almost 14 months.

Couple of hints for increasing use of these books: First, gather with friends for a planned night out every so often. On a rotating basis, each couple selects avenue from the Dining Book, makes the reservations if required and then each couple uses their coupon for the dinner out. A second idea shared with me was for friends to exchange coupons. Third suggestion was for those who do not care for fast foods to tear out those coupons and give them to others such as families with young members who eat out fairly often. Our grandsons frequently eat out as they chase from one sport or school activities to another. Fourth suggestion is the coupon books literally pays for itself just by using the Circa Dinner Theater Coupon and its 2 for 1 offer.

The books are available now by contacting me and I will even deliver them if helpful.....that is, any where in the Iowa-Illinois Quad Cities. Make checks payable to KofC 658.

INSURANCE AGENT’S MESSAGE Have you ever heard the expression “lazy days

of summer?” While the hot weather may encourage a slower paced life, in many ways summer can be the busiest time of the year. Especially, for parents with school-aged children. And being busy, it’s easy to forgetabout such things as reviewing your life insurance coverage.

The purpose of this column is to encourage you to meet with me, your Knights of Columbus agent, before the end of the summer. Whether or not you have life insurance with the Order, I’ll be happy to meet with you and make sure your coverage continues to meet yourneeds and goals. If you’ve had any life changes since you last bought a policy (new home, new child, new job, etc.), chances are your life insurance needs to be updated. I’ll work with you to make sure you have the coverage you need at a price you can afford.

Call me to set up an appointment. When we meet, you’ll discover that time spent with your Knights

of Columbus agent is time well-spent. But, make the call today. Because summer is not only busy, it’s also coming to an end.
