Alleyton Adopts a Family for the Holidays

This year is Alleyton’s second year participating in the Houston Children’s Charity

Adopt-a-Family program. The program pairs people and organizations with local

families that need help during the holidays. Those who adopt families gather pre-

sents, clothing, household items and what ever else the family may need. Last year

Alleyton adopted the Cirlos-Vallejo Family, a family of six from the Rosenberg area.

This year Alleyton adopted the Hernandez family. Blanca Hernandez is a single

mother of three from the Stafford area. Blanca and her children Noah, Hannah and

Isaiah came to the main office to pick up their gifts and enjoy a festive lunch with the

office staff. They each opened one present to play with while they visited. The re-

maining gifts were packed up and delivered to their home so they can open them on

Christmas morning. The Holiday season is a time for helping and giving back to the

community. We wish the Hernandez family a very merry Christmas and a happy

New Year.

In Memory of Michael Hayn

On November 20, 2016 Alleyton lost a dear coworker and friend. Michael

Hayn was a dispatcher for our ready mix operations. Michael died while

out with his friends on his motorcycle. He was pulled over helping a friend

with some mechanical issues when he was struck by a hit and run driver.

Michael was known to be a very giving person, always quick to stop and

offer assistance to someone on the side of the road, no matter what time

of the day.

Michael is survived by his three year old son, a brother in Nicaragua, and

several other family members in the Houston area.

Alleyton raised nearly $7,000 via a GoFundMe for Michael’s son and also

gathered toys and clothing for Christmas. He will be missed by all of us

here at Alleyton.

On October 27th Alleyton held its first Environmen-tal Service Day. Volunteers travelled to the Brazos Bend State Park for some trail maintenance. Our group helped lop branches and spread gravel on the trails.

The floods in late April and May have left the trails in poor condition. Visitors walk, run and bike the trails at Brazos Bend for exercise and to view the wildlife. It is important that the trails are maintained not only to bring in visitors but to keep visitors safe.

Brazos Bend is home to many species of native Texas plants and wildlife. As part of our Sustaina-bility and Social Corporate Responsibility efforts it is important that we positively impact the environ-ment and communities that surround us.

Our first Environmental Service Day was a success and we hope for more to come.

Leadership Team

This year was the first year for Alley-ton to participate in the Safety Lead-ership Team program. Four employ-ees, each from different aspects of Alleyton’s operations, came together and worked on a project to increase safety in our operations. After much deliberation, the team decided traffic control in the plants was a top con-cern. The group conducted risk as-sessments on our Plant 1 location as an example. The assessments iden-tified several items that were deemed hazardous / unsafe and the team collaborated to implement new controls for those hazards. All of the new control measures can be imple-mented at all locations to make each of our locations safer. The team pre-sented their risk assessment findings and solutions to Alleyton senior lead-ers and to Summit’s head safety leaders. The Safety Leadership Team went above and beyond with their hard work and solutions to our current safety risks. 2016’s Safety Leadership Team has set the bar for all future groups with their dedica-tion, hard work, creativity and excite-ment for their project and its out-comes.

Q- How long have you worked for Alleyton?

I have been working for Alleyton for a little over 2 years and enjoying it.

Q- What do you like the most about working for Alleyton

The most important reason I like working for Alleyton is that the higher management really does care for you as a person and does not treat you as a number.

Q- What are the biggest challenges you face at work?

It’s a challenge when people wait until the last minute to report problems with the plant.

Q- What do you do to overcome them?

Try getting them to understand the im-portance of inspecting there plant daily and reporting promptly.

Q- What are your hobbies outside of work?

No hobbies just busy helping with projects for my two girls Addison and Avery.

Q- Can you tell me about the attached pic-ture?

The picture was taken at the Colorado county fair where my oldest girl Addison won grand champion in Broilers (Broiler Chickens). We were sponsored by Alleyton.

Q- What song best describes your work eth-ics?

HA HA I guess it would be “Let the Good Times Roll” by Cars

AND WE ROLL!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Your efforts in improving our Safety culture and

results are making a difference. Compared to November of 2015, our results have

drastically improved. Recordable injuries are down almost 50%, preventable vehicle

incidents are down over 60%, and most importantly we have ZERO lost time injuries!

We’ll continue to strive for ZERO in all areas and I appreciate your efforts in keeping

you and your coworkers safe.

2016 has been a challenging year in many ways; historic flooding, uncertain market

conditions in the business, and increased competition with eroding prices. Many of

these challenges have had significant impacts on our business, but through the efforts

of our employees we were able to minimize many of these.

With the election behind us, there are many positive signs on the horizon for our industry in transportation funding. In late August, TxDOT approved the 2017 Unified Transportation Program (UTP) with $70 billion worth of projects to help TxDOT meet the state’s growing transportation demands over the next 10 years. This is in addition to Prop 1 and Prop 7 passed in the last two years. We have already benefitted from these two measures, supplying sand and concrete to several large projects. We are optimistic moving forward and will certainly gain our share of the work that will be let. On the homebuilding side, there are mixed feelings for 2017. After a decline in single

family home starts in 2015 and 2016, many estimate flat for 2017 as we continue to

work through the energy slowdown. Some experts feel we are at the bottom of the

energy slowdown and are optimistic that towards the end of 2017 we will begin to see

positive momentum. Others predict a stronger market beginning in mid-2017, with a

possible home lot shortage by mid-2018, similar to what we experienced in 2014.

Only time will tell but the investments we’ve made over the past few years have

prepared us for the next surge in activity. Our focus on diversifying the type of work we

do enables us to cast a wider net and keep our employees working. We will continue to

invest in new locations and acquisitions to strengthen and grow the business.

Thank you for all your efforts in 2016 and making Alleyton and Allied the best heavy

side construction materials supplier in the Houston area. I look forward to the

challenges and success that 2017 will bring.

Survey Results

Our second annual Employee Engagement Survey

was completed October of this year. The results of last

year and this year’s survey shows that progress is be-

ing made. Overall satisfaction has increased and new programs have been set in

place due to feedback from the survey. One example is communication, it has

been noted as a opportunity for improvement and is currently being addressed

with our newsletter as well as our new website that will be up and running in

2017. The website will also provide a portal for all job postings to be open to all

employees. Another area we are improving is training, Frontline Leadership De-

velopment and new hire training have been implemented in order to help our em-

ployees be better prepared to successfully face the challenges of their job. We

thank you for participating in the survey each year and giving your honest feed-

back so that we can make Alleyton a great place to work.

Feedback from previous years survey results show that our employee appreciation has room for improvement. In an effort to show all employees at all locations how their hard work truly is appreciated we had our very first Employee Thank You Week. November 21st-23rd, the three days before the Thanksgiving holiday, were three days of small gestures of gratitude. A donut breakfast on day one, a gift for sore muscles on day two, and a pizza lunch all accompanied by some thank you notes (pictured below). Hopefully these small gestures were a reminder to all that Alleyton is THANKFUL for YOU!

HARD HAT ZONE

One Year No Lost Time!

On December 29, 2016 Alleyton Resource achieved a major safety milestone.

December 29, 2016 marked 365 days and approximately 1,133,539 man-hours

worked without a lost time injury.

A lost time injury is a work-related injury / illness that occurred at the workplace

or at an offsite location where an employee was carrying out work activities that

results in at least one full day away from work duties.

Combined efforts from all employees, communication of safe work practices and

the sharing of lessons learned from observations and incidents helped to obtain

this remarkable achievement.

Managing safety is never an easy task, however, with dedication and commit-

ment to our safety program, there is no reason why Alleyton Resource cannot go

another 365 days without a lost time injury. Congratulations to everyone for this

wonderful achievement. Thank you and please continue putting safety first.
