On Friday 13 March a team of students and staff along with several families attended Kangaroo Inn Area
School for Interschool Sports Day. The weather was not ideal with strong winds and not a lot of sunshine, how-
ever our team arrived full of energy ready for a day of great competition.
Allendale came 4th overall on the day, however ALL of our students showed courage, bravery and great
sportsmanship throughout the day, often participating in events outside of their own age groups.
Several of our students achieved championship status, which highlighted their efforts from the day.
Allendale won the Jim Judd Trophy for Most Improved school.

During week 7, two teams of girls from our 7-10 cohort attended Mount Gambier High School for a 3 day
workshop by Young Change Agent’s, along with around 40 other girls from local high schools. The workshop
was facilitated by local teachers who have been trained in this program’s implementation, including myself.
The girls completed the Young Change Agent’s Explorer program and pitched social enterprise ideas as part
of this Academy for enterprising Girls initiative. By completing the program they showed that they have the
enterprising and creative thinking skills needed to solve problems in innovative ways.
One of our teams, consisting of Brianna Thomson (year 9), Billie Rashleigh and Nicole Imperial (year 10) came
away overall winners for the week, based on their pitch and social enterprise “AIG” (Autism in Girls). The
team selected this topic themselves and presented a very professional pitch to the judging panel of four, in-
cluding Troy Bell MP, Callena Rawlings (Flinders University), Jacinta Jones (WIBIRD Chair) and Judy
Nagy (City of Mount Gambier).
Their pitch explained their enterprise which involved creating a book for girls and their families, and a
wireframe for an app which they would like to develop with support from either a government grant or Kick-
starter fund.
All of the students involved have gained skills in:
Community mapping
Defining a problem
Customer pains and gains
Market validation
Pitching
Communicating a vision
Ideation
Business model
Budgeting
Other teams focused on solving problems such as litter, lack of safe spaces for our LGBTQI community and
car parking in Mount Gambier. It was a privilege for me to be involved in such a fabulous opportunity and so
inspiring to watch the girls achieve so highly.

MESSAGE FROM THE MINISTER
Hon John Gardner MP, Minister for Education The Chief Public Health Officer and her team are working with their colleagues across Australia to ensure that
the health and wellbeing of our community, including our workforce and our children, are given the best
possible support in this unprecedented situation. The Public Health Officers who make up the Australian
Health Protection Principal Committee are the experts in their field.
Their advice at this stage is that the right thing is for our schools and early childhood settings to remain
open. We will continue to embed their expert advice in all the decisions that we make.
Allendale East Area School will continue to take advice from the Education Minister and SA Health regarding
best practice in keeping our environment safe for all children in our community. Additional cleaning hours
have been allocated to the site to increase the cleanliness of all work areas. Staff are being encouraged to
increase their own hygienic practices and support young people in understanding the importance of being
vigilant during uncertain times. As a site, we encourage you to continue sending your children to school if
they are fit and healthy, however, if in doubt, please keep your child at home and follow attendance
processes for known absences.
