Independent and Revolutionary. These two words embody what it is to be an American as well as a Mason. On July 4th we pause to celebrate the brave men who forged a country out of wilderness with blood and guts. We have all heard the countless stories of how the Freemasons directly influenced the building of the precepts of our great country. Numerous Freemasons stepped out of the secrecy of their Blue Lodges to help create the freedoms we now enjoy. Besides the image of George Washington on our one dollar bill, the next most identifiable may be our first President wearing his Masonic Apron. In school we learned about how the original thirteen colonies strived to be independent of a suppressive monarch. We believe all men are equal. The walls of our Blue Lodges are adorned with plaques and banners engraved with the names of Masons who are counted among our Founding Fathers. We are quick to boast of their heroic exploits and are proud to be called a Freemason just as they were. From within the confines of the Colonial Masonic Lodges sprang forth a revolutionary thought… Freedom for All. The world was forever changed by just a handful of free thinkers. When America was formed the very thought of freedom for all was revolutionary. We were an experiment in how good men, left to be free in our religious endeavors as well as day to day life, could become great men. Freemasons continue to be revolutionary today. In our ever changing world it is hard to think of many places you can gather without fear of retribution and openly work to gain more knowledge. In our Blue Lodges a man is not judged by his vocation, religion, or social status. All men are equal. All men deserve the right to be free thinkers. All men can create a better world. I think that makes our great fraternity just as Independent and Revolutionary as America was so long ago.

As we enter our parade season I would once again like to remind everyone that we are invited guests in these parades. We are not the boss. We have to accept the decision of each parade committee. After an unfortunate incident last July we were thrown out of the Three Rivers Festival Parade, AGAIN. We were banned from the event for more than a decade until Ellis Ryan asked for another chance. Last July I found myself sitting in their office begging for forgiveness a second time. A Mizpah Shriner, who was not getting the answer he wanted, called a female Three Rivers Festival official an off color name in front of a dozen volunteers. Let’s all remember, “As you put the fez on your head, it is as if you are putting the Masonic Apron around your waist.” The Three Rivers Festival Parade is the most viewed parade in Northeast Indiana. Last year 80,000 spectators lined the streets of Fort Wayne with an estimated 100,000 watching from home. I am willing to swallow my pride and do whatever it takes to secure the future of Mizpah, but this is our last chance. Please be patient at all of this season’s parades. We need them more than they need us.

Remember, Imperial Parade is Monday July 1st @ 7:00 pm. Three Rivers Festival is Saturday July 13th @ 9:00 am. Orland Parade is July 27th @ 9:00 am.

Recorder’s Message

Ronald J. Harruff, PP, 33º Recorder

In our beloved Shine – we have what is recognized as the World’s Greatest Fraternal Product. We’ve a package that has tremendous merchandise appeal. Wrapped with the colorful activity and tied with bands of worthwhile purpose, ours is a product that is “all good”. While it is world famous…and while it has excellent acceptance, IT MUST BE SOLD.

Nobles, we have a real sales job to perform if we are to increase our membership. I call upon you to join in really SELLING SHRINEDOM.

I urge you to marshal your facts, to go forth and tell our story in a POSTIVE MANNER. Tell your prospect what Shrinedom will mean to him – to his family. Talk in terms of self-interest, paint a vivid word picture – make him want to join!

Tell him – we share a fellowship that is unequalled in tone, quality, and sincerity.

Shrinedom allows us to meet the big, the small, the successful, the humble, the famous, all on the same level.

We have an opportunity for him to participate in an activity of his individual interest.

We share a joy of being a living part of our 22 great Shriners Hospitals for Children.

We have the prestige of belonging to a fraternity of men geared to meet the demands of men as they work together.

Dial in on positive facts and we will sell our product and meet the challenges of the future.

We have a tremendous product – but to sell it we must tell it.

Quote of the day: “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” Sir Winston Churchill

Work for a cause, not for applauseLive life to express, not to impress

Don’t strive to make your presence noted,Just make your absence felt.

Safety Begins at Home Tips to Keep Your Children, and You, Safe at Home

Use electrical outlet covers. Unplug electrical appliances when not in use. Install an appropriate number of smoke detectors – one near each bedroom, one at the top of each stairway and one near the planned escape route. Teach your children that matches are a tool, and not a toy. Keep matches out of reach of younger children, and allow older children to use them only when supervised. Store all flammable liquids properly. Store all chemicals and cleaners out of reach of children, or lock the cabinet. Have the chimney inspected annually and the fireplace checked regularly according to usage. Replace damaged electrical cords. Do not leave lighted candles unattended. Gasoline has only one purpose: to fuel an engine

Safety Throughout the Home:

Safety Planning in Case a Fire Does Occur: Have an escape plan, including two exits from each room, in place. Practice using the plan. Have a designated meeting place at a safe distance from the home.

Safety in the Kitchen and Dining Area: Always supervise children in the kitchen and dining area. Keep children away from everything that is hot. If young children are in the home, use placemats rather than tablecloths. Keep all hot items and anything electrical out of reach of children and away from edges of tables and counters. Establish a kid-free zone, where young children can be watched but are safely out of the kitchen while cooking is being done. Do not use deep-fryers with children present. Keep pot handles turned inward; use oven mitts or pot holders. Keep clothing from coming into contact with flames or heating elements. Store all chemicals and cleaners out of reach of children, or lock the cabinet. Follow instructions and cautions for heating items in a microwave oven. Avoid area rugs in the kitchen. Do not handle hot items while holding young children.

Unit News Unit NewsBagpipers

Hello Bagpipe Fans! Our three big events for the past month were playing the pipes at Mark’s church in Columbia City in early May, the onion sales and piping in the Deputy Imperial Potentate at the Pote’s Ball.

The gig at Mark’s church for the Mother/Daughter gathering went well. Dick led the unit and told stories to “spice up” the entertainment. Greg did a GREAT job on “Amazing Grace”. The biggest challenge was negotiating the steps onto and off of the stage.

Scott did a stellar job at distributing onions. What a Salesman! He even played the pipes as a gimmick to entice participation.

I was really proud that Greg and Scott were willing and able to pipe the Deputy Imperial Potentate in at the Potentate’s Ball. Although their assessment of the performance was down, I am glad to see the younger, newer members stepping forward to take this kind of responsibility. As with many of the units, the leadership has resided with the older members. If we are to stay viable as an organization, we have to be ready to transition the reins. It is because of my love of the pipes that I personally want to see the unit continue and, hopefully, flourish. I look forward to seeing even more this summer from Bobby, Billy, Mark, Dennis, Greg, Brad and Scott. I hope that with Dick lending his expertise and the encouragement of the other members (Don, Goose, Lonnie and Owen) we will see growth and improvement.

Hope to see you all this summer!

Joe Jenckes, Director

ClownsHello Clown Fans! April ended nicely with Smirky and Sambo (with assistance from “Little I”) performing at the Warsaw Eisenhower Elementary School Festival, April 27, 2013, Warsaw.

May started with the Unit Onion sales. Sambo took the bus to Freeman Jewelers on Wednesday, May 8, 2013. Snappy allowed the unit to set up in his lot to sell onions and provided a great sign he had made up. Sambo and Fuzzy (performing in makeup), Putz and Timbo (the management team), Janice "Fuzzy's Wife" and Sambo’s daughter Eli and her friend Vanessa (working to draw in customers) started at 11 am at Freeman's Jewelers till 2:30 PM and then went to the old Dairy Queen at Clinton Corners (By Bishop Dwenger HS) and set up and sold till 5 PM. Sambo said that with all the work for $60 maybe we should forgo this concerted effort and just do individual sales next year.

Sambo, Fuzzy and Lucky performed at the Screening Clinic, Saturday, May 25, 2013, Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. There were only two families, but there were four children admitted to the program. The clowns entertained any and everyone they could corner and had a good time.

The unit has been looking forward to and planning for the Horse Show June 21 – 23. Sambo reported that they are setting up a tent for the clowns and he has been coordinating the roster. Smirky has games to entertain and keep the kids busy. The skit group is planning a practice during the Horse Show in preparation for the Skit competition, July 1, 2013, Monday, Indianapolis 1:00 - 3:00 pm.

Smirky introduced a motion at the May meeting to have the unit buy and donate a 24” High definition Television Set for Waiting Room at the Chicago Shrine Hospital. During discussion, the size was voted as 32”. Smirky said that if we get it to them soon, we can have a plaque with it saying that it was donated by the Fort Wayne Mizpah Clowns. Harvey volunteered to have the plaque made.

I would like to thank Sambo for making my birthday (65) and retirement (27 years with Computer Sciences Corporation on Monday, June 3) a very pleasant and memorable occasion. He set a nice display with pictures, balloons and stuffed animals and also provided a GREAT cake at the May meeting to commemorate the occasion. The clowns sang “Happy Birthday/Retirement” and then ate cake.

Well, enough for now. Have fun and “Bump a Nose”! Joe Jenckes, Luckey Lewey

Little 500On June the 8th we paraded for the first time this year. We went to New Haven and everyone's cars looked great. The guys did a great job! Those of you that were not able to make it we hope to see you at the next parade. If anyone is having trouble finishing up your car let one of us know and we will schedule a work day to come help. The Horse Patrol will be having their annual horse show on June 21st, 22nd and 23rd in Columbia City. Hopefully some of you will be able to join in helping them out on one of those days. It was a lot of fun last year. There is also a fishing derby on June 22nd. If you have any children or know any that would like to have the opportunity to go fishing this is a great time. It is held at Joe Simon's pond on Wolf Rd in Columbia City. Our next parade is scheduled in Huntington on June 22nd for Heritage Days. Hope you can join us. See you curb side, Jeff Baumgardner, Little 500 President

Kosciusko Shrine ClubI do not have much to say this month, I guess I said too much last month.

Our Fair Parking Fundraiser will be the week of July 8th. This is the main fundraiser for the circus program. So come out for a couple of hours and send a kid to the circus. Chairman Bill Beatty and Co-Chair Jay Shively along with their Day Chairmen will be calling soon.

Our Golf Outing will be August 14th at Rozella Ford Golf Course. This course is under new management and I understand they made some great improvements, so with an improved course you should get your scores improved also. How do you like that logic? See you there.

In October we will have out annual Turkey Shoot. Noble Don Smith and crew have been collecting turkeys for the past few weeks. Don said he has been working very hard teaching the birds to duck. Why on earth would a turkey want to be taught to be a duck? Maybe because it is not called a Duck Shoot.

On the temple front, let us not forget about the Sportsman Raffle September 7th. A chance on 100 hundred guns, beer and food for only $20.00 sounds like a cable reality show to me.

In closing, let us remember what the Judge said, shake them bushes, find a good man, make him a Mason and turn him on to Shrine.Grasshopper

Giant FezTurtle Days, Old Settlers Days and the 4th of July have been completed for another year and the results were very good. President Bob Boylan would like to thank all of the Nobles and Ladies for their outstanding support and hard work in making all three events a success for the Club again this year.

As a reminder, the Ladies Outing will be on Thursday, July 25th. We still have some tickets available. It is never too late to call Ken at 260-244-3406 with your reservation. .

The August 22nd monthly meeting is yet to be determined. The Horse grounds will be featuring a Mizpah outing for that evening. Once we have a decision from our president, we will pass it along through the phone tree.

Look forward to seeing everyone in Warsaw for Ladies Night.

Upcoming Dates:

> July 25th – Ladies Night – No Monthly Meeting

> August 22nd – Monthly meeting to be determined

Ken Lundquist, Secretary/Treasurer

Unit News Unit NewsMizpah Vettes Club

The newest club in Mizpah is up and running. The MIZPAH VETTES CLUB was officially organized on May 9, 2013. While much was decided upon and incorporated into our by-law, a number of organizational details still need to be finalized.

Membership in the club is open to any Noble in good standing of Mizpah Shrine. Nobles that join before September 1, 2013 will be designated as charter members. Membership dues were set at $20 per year or $200 lifetime.

Elected officers of the Vettes Club are: President Dee Byerly, Vice President Robert Brinson, Secretary/Treasurer Mike Craig, and Parade Marshal Robert Kisner. The third Monday of each month was selected by the membership as the stated meeting time.

As the Club is still in its infancy, our parade schedule is rather light at this time. Currently, we have two parades booked, the Imperial Parade in Indianapolis and the Three Rivers Parade in Fort Wayne. It will be our intent to consider other parades as the opportunities to participate are presented.

In closing, I would like to say that if you are a Noble in Mizpah and own a Corvette, but have been undecided about joining our Club, come and visit us on the third Monday at the Shrine Center at 7:00pm and the enjoy the company of a great group of Nobles.

Dee Byerly, President

Pokagon SCThe Pokagon Shrine Club continues to meet on the third Wednesday of each month at the Angola Moose Lodge. If you are a Shriner and are temporarily in Steuben County on one of our great Lakes, you are certainly welcome. Year around Shriners in our County are also welcome to attend. We eat at 6:30 PM, followed by a short business meeting at 7:00 PM. Savory grilled beef, pork or chicken are on the menu for the summer months. Please join us.

The Club will participate in the Imperial Parade in Indianapolis on July 1 and the Angola July 4th parade and we will be part of the Orland Parade on Saturday, July 27. Nobles are welcome to join us for any parade. An Oasis will be open in Orland after the parade for grilled sandwiches and several tasty treats.

Pokagon Shriners are having a “Colts Football” package as our raffle, which is part of the Sportsman Raffle that concludes on Saturday, September 7. The award will be 2 football tickets in the lower section, a VIP parking pass and $300 cash prize, which can be used as the winner desires. The game is on Sunday, November 10, 1:00 PM, in Indianapolis. The price is $5.00 per ticket or 5 tickets for $20.00.

The Pokagon Shrine Golf Outing is Thursday, July 18 at Lake James Golf Club near Angola. The format will be a four person Florida Scramble, with a 1:00 PM shot gun start. Mike Hagewood is Chairman of the outing. For details, contact Mike at 260-316-1257. The cost is $70 per person, which includes golf, cart, dinner and beverages.

Our summer outing will be on Tuesday, August 6 for a Ft. Wayne Tin Caps game. The game starts at 7:05 PM. The gates open at 6:05 PM. We have a reserved concourse suite that will keep our group together. One can move about easily to eat and enjoy the game. They will serve us a buffet style meal that will last from 15 minutes before game time until the 7th inning. The menu includes hamburgers, hot dogs, macaroni and cheese, peanuts and soft drinks. It’s time to start turning in your requests for tickets. This is for Shriners, potential Shriners and their families. The cost is $20 for your admission and food. Reservations are needed by July 19.

Paul Friend, President

Khyber Gun ClubKHYBER sponsored trap shooting at the Horse Patrol Grounds will resume in on July 16 and continue on August 20, September 17 and (October 15, weather permitting).. Guns and shells are available for a nominal price at the event. If you enjoy trap shooting, come and join us at 6:00 pm for an hour of shooting and talking.

Contrary to last months statement in the ALLAH BI that the KHYBERS would be raffling a top line fishing reel at the Sportsman Raffle, all of our active members are occupied performing other tasks supporting the raffle. The KHYBERS will not sponsor a raffle activity at this event.

The next KHYBER meeting will be September 24 at 7:00 in the Cabiri Room. Fellowship begins at 6:30 in the lounge. No meal will be available do to preparation for the move to our new digs. As I understand, pop corn will be available.

Fraternally, Jim Crawford, Secretary

Mizpah Car ClubIt has been a while since the last Car Club Article so I will try to bring everyone up to date. A few months ago we voted to change our monthly meeting date to the 4th Monday of the month. Our July 22nd meeting will be the first one with this change. This will allow us to share a meeting room with Yoshi and the Directors staff when we occupy our new building.

Have you heard about our new club fundraiser? “WHEELBARROW FULL OF FUN”. The wheelbarrow full of fun, yes it’s a wheelbarrow that we are selling raffle tickets for. What’s the fun part? Well it will be full of spirits (Booze), a total value over $500. This with take place during the Sportsman’s Raffle on September 7 at the horse grounds. If you haven’t gotten a book of tickets to sell please contact Phil Wade at 260-466-2053 to get tickets.

Speaking of fundraisers we had a great turnout for our annual car show this year. It was the best participated show we have had in several years. I want to thank all of the members for their hard work contacting vendors for donations and working the day of the show. Potentate Mike Hardiek and his lady Shannon were there to enjoy all of the sights and pick the car for Potentate’s choice. Mike’s pick was a 1955 Chevy BelAir station wagon. Wagons seem to be a facet of the car hobby that is gaining popularity. They sure bring back memories; first date, drive-inn movies and family vacations. I did not have the opportunity to ask Mike why he chose a station wagon but I am sure there are some good memories that prompted his choice.

We made a few changes to this year’s event and everything ran very smoothly. As we were rapping up I heard several new ideas that will help make next year’s show even better. It’s great to have a group that remains open-minded and are positive about making changes for our future.

The May meeting was held on Wednesday, the 15th. There were 5 members in attendance; Bob Harrold, Jim Wolf, Phil Schubert, Bob Coe, and Dale Dolby. No business was conducted.

Euchre was played. Phil Schubert decided to be partners with “Honest Bob” Coe. Phil was dealt a very good hand and got so excited that he tried to play alone before it was his turn. Unfortunately he didn’t get to play it. I think some of “Honest Bob’s” methods rubbed off on him. Anyway, we had a very good time.

Next meeting; June 19th, at the Shrine. Come and have fun with us.

Reporting, Dale R Dolby

Flying Shriners

The summer parades are quickly approaching, and with that comes the need for all the available Director’s Staff personnel to assist in carrying the new flag that our Potentate has purchased for us to carry. The first parade is our home parade at the Three Rivers Festival on July 13th, followed by Orland on July 27th. All are encouraged to attend.

Tickets for the Shrine Sportsman’s Raffle for the safe have been distributed, and everyone is asked to bring back money for tickets as soon as you get it. It is important to put the funds back into the bank account to cover the costs associated with this event. Thanks in advance to those who are selling tickets and promoting the event!

See you around the shrine!

Ben Kapp, VP/Secretary

Directors Staff

The big events for June are history and I'll be able to give better report of results and details in Aug. news letter. Getting ready for the Show the grounds looked really good and Ex. Dir. Steve Sickafoose and gang have other details fine tuned for some super nice weather and lots of spectators and horses. Many thanks in advance for jobs well done to all. The bridge repair of removing the rotten old planks and putting in the new ones was completed in less than three hours with all the good help John V, Ed H, Bruce P, Bob (hold the hoe) C, and Mike Davis and myself with our tractors with forks. The forks made most of the heavy lifting a lot easier and Team Work made a big job run pretty smooth.

At June meeting, Cook Ed treated us to a very fine Brisket and fix'ns meal and Pres. Bob Coe got business handled for the Horse Show and other prep details, plus thanked Mike Davis for the nice new sign to welcome everyone to the grounds. It was decided to go Dark in July as we had most of our hard stuff completed. No meeting or drill practices for July only. We still have parades, Three Rivers on the 14th, Orland on the 27th and Pierceton on Aug. 3rd with Oasis at Giant Ranch to follow. The Divan, APC, and other guests, joined us last year for a fun fest, and we expect the same this year.

In Aug., we will be back to normal meeting and drills getting ready for GLSA in Sept., and don't forget to get your Sportsman Raffle tickets sold. I guess having a little extra time with NO DRILLS in July I may get in some trail riding, hope to see you on the long one and ride safe.

So Long & Happy Trails, Ray Giant

Remember me when I am gone away, Gone far away into the silent land; When you can go no more hold me by the hand, Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay. Remember me when no more day by day You tell me of our future that you planned: Only remember me; you understand It will be late to counsel then or pray. Yet if you should forget me for a while And afterwards remember, do not grieve: For if the darkness and corruption leave A vestige of the thoughts that once I had, Better by far you should forget and smile Than that you should remember and be sad.

Someone has said that Membership in every organization is made up of four bones.

There are the Jaw Bones - who do all the talking, but very little else.

There are the Knuckle Bones - who knock everything that anyone ever tries to do.

And finally, there are the Back Bones - who get under the load and do the work.

There are the Wish Bones - who spend their time wishing someone else would do all the work.

This year’s Ladies Project pays tribute to the hope we bring to the children we serve every day in our 22 Temples of Mercy. After the initial purchase of this high quality bracelet you will have the opportunity to add custom beads that represent important moments from throughout the year. The first bead simply says, “Hope.” This one word opens up a world of possibilities. Hope is what inspires or patience to push on against all odds.
