THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING THE APPLE STRUDEL MAKE

MORE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED NEXT YEAR Many thanks to all of you who supported the All Saints 3rd Annual Apple Strudel Make. We made and sold 216 stru-dels, short of our goal of 250 strudels. Net proceeds in the amount of $3,672 will be used to fund church activities.

We had 35 volunteers this year, with the youngest being 8-yr-old Troy Rosales, and the oldest 91-yr-old Valeria Cegiel-ski. Msgr Adam was also a volunteer this year, joining us on Saturday morning.

In the previous 2 years, we have made it a practice to review and analyze our strudel making, with the objective of im-proving our equipment, our processes, and our product. Our analysis in this our 3rd year has resulted in the conclusion that we cannot continue to grow this parish-wide fundraiser without additional volunteers. We have a core group of dedicated volunteers, but we need YOUR help also. When you hear the call for volunteers next year, please respond affirmatively and joyously! We have already set the date for making strudels in 2015 – Friday, November 13th and Sat-urday, November 14th. So, mark it on your calendar, and SAVE the DATE!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Coming to the end of the Church year, we can wonder how we got “extreme unc on” out of “anoin ng of the sick.” “Extreme” comes from a La n phrase, in extremis, which in English refers to the last struggle of a dying person. “Last rites” is a phrase in common usage, and refers to the fact that years ago everyone waited un l the last crisis of illness to summon the priest. The goal of anoin ng had always been healing and forgiveness, but in me it began to be seen as a prepara on for death. In a hard world, almost anything from a hangnail to a sneeze could be life-threatening, so perhaps the change was inevitable. The emphasis on the peniten al aspects was heightened, even to the odd prac ce of Rome in the twel h century, when the sick person was sprinkled with ashes mixed with holy water and given a hair shirt as a sign of penance. The reformers thankfully overlooked some of these oddi es of history, and today the sacrament of the sick is much more generously applied to persons in a wide range of situa ons. S ll, it is a sacrament of reconcilia on, and for that reason is not celebrated for an infant or toddler, although there is a rite for a visit to a sick child not including anoin ng or Communion. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. THE LORD’S FLOCK Sheep are high-maintenance animals. They are not very intelligent. Without guidance and care, especially in a climate like Israel’s, they would die quickly from predators, starva on, or just their own slowness. The scriptural image of us as the Lord’s flock is not terribly fla ering to us, since it is only the never-ending diligence of a watchful shepherd that allows the flock to survive. The feast of Christ the King was intended to call the world back to Christ as the sole power of the world, to bring back a flock that had been sca ered by many nega ve forces of the growing industrial, scien fic, and war-torn world of the early twen eth century. It is fi ng that, as we celebrate Christ the King, we hear about Christ the Shepherd who cares for us and who, likewise, will be there at the end of me. Interes ngly enough, as the Gospel illustrates, our own des ny is determined by the way we have been “shepherds” to the rest of the flock. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

St. Catherine of Alexandria, Virgin and Martyr whose feast day is November 25th. She is the patroness of philosophers and preachers.St. Catherine is believed to have been born in Alexandria of a noble family. Con-verted to Christianity through a vision, she denounced Maxentius for persecuting Christians. Fifty of her con-verts were then burned to death by Maxentius.Maxentius offered Catherine a royal mar-riage if she would deny the Faith. Her refusal landed her in prison. While in prison, and while Maxentius was away, Catherine converted Maxentius' wife and two hundred of his soldiers. He had them all put to death.Catherine was likewise condemned to death. She was put on a spiked wheel, and when the wheel broke, she was beheaded. She is venerated as the patroness of philosophers and preachers. St. Catherine's was one of the voices heard by St. Joan of Arc. Maxentius' blind fury against St. Catherine is symbolic of the anger of the world in the face of truth and justice. When we live a life of truth and justice, we can expect the forces of evil to oppose us. Our perseverance in good, howev-er, will be everlasting.
