When the rule was mitigated (i.e. “eased”) back in 1966, it wasn’t done just to give people a break from this discipline; it was done to help people to see and understand that Fridays are more than just about not eating meat. “The penitential days and times in the universal Church are every Friday of the whole year and the season of Lent.” (Canon 1250 in the Code of Canon Law) And, “penitential days are prescribed on which the Christian faithful devote themselves in a special way to prayer, perform works of piety and charity, and deny themselves” (Canon 1249).

The original intention of the easing of the rule regarding abstinence from eating meat on each Friday, was that if people chose to eat meat on the Fridays outside of Lent/Good Friday, they were to do some other act of penitence in place of abstaining from eating meat. A lot of Catholics – if not the majority – forgot about doing some other act of penitence. They just saw it as a relaxing of an old rule. (To be fair, the intention of some other penitential act on Fridays – in place not eating meat – was not well communicated. But now you know.)

So, since we are having a “Pig Roast” as part of our parish picnic on Friday, August 17th, we should plan on doing some other act of penitence. Since penitential days help us devote ourselves to prayer (see Canon 1249, above), this would be a wonderful day and opportunity to take part in our regular Friday 12-noon Mass, followed by Adoration with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament until 8:00PM. Stop in and spend some time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, and/or take part in the various scheduled devotions: Evening Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours at 6PM, Stations of the Cross at 6:30PM, Night Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours at 7:45PM, Benediction and Reposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 8:00PM. And don’t forget Confessions from 1-2PM, 3-4PM, and 7-8PM (and those times often extend beyond the hour if people present themselves for confession).

I hope you plan on participating in our “free” Parish Picnic, enjoy each other’s company, eat some roasted pork and/or other foods (see page 9), and spend some time in prayer.

Have a blessed week,

From Fr. Joe Last week I stated I’d be addressing why we are having our parish picnic Pig Roast on a Friday, especially after mentioning that we are encouraged by our U.S. Bishops to voluntarily practice fasting and abstinence (i.e. not eating meat) each Friday during the year and not just for Lent, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. I will, but before doing that I want to share something that I neglected to include in the information about the Novena for the Legal Protection of Human Life that the USCCB – United States Conference of Catholic Bishops – has organized and which began this past Friday (Aug. 3rd) and will continue for the 9 Fridays of August–September, ending on Friday, September 28th. To find more about the Novena and the links to information about each of the Fridays, check last weekend’s bulletin (either a printed copy, or on our parish website or app). But here, I just want to give you the very simple Novena prayer because although there will be printed copies of the prayer available in the church on Fridays and we encourage everyone to pray the prayer during Eucharistic Adoration with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament (which we have every Friday), you can pray the prayer wherever you are. So here is the prayer:

(Now that’s pretty simple.)

So, why are we having a “Pig Roast” on a Friday if we are asked to voluntarily refrain from eating meat on all Fridays? In order to address this, a little background is in order.

“Abstinence”, generally speaking, is an act of voluntary self-control as a private act of penance for a certain period of time. While it can be applied to many things (e.g. refraining from alcohol beverages, watching TV, sexual activity, etc.), for Catholics “the term applies to not eating flesh meats for determined periods” … “For centuries the Catholic laity abstained from meat products each Friday, but that rule was mitigated in 1966. Catholics now [are obliged to] abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Fridays during Lent, and on Good Friday.” (Both quotes from The HarperCollins Encyclopedia of Catholicism 1995).

Novena prayer for the Legal Protection of Human Life:

May a change in the U.S. Supreme Court move our nation closer to the day when every human being is protected in law and welcomed in life.

Our Father..., Hail Mary..., Glory Be…

Stewardship in Our Readings The crowd in today’s Gospel demanded a sign from Jesus. May our faithful stewardship be a sign to others that we, like the Ephesians in the second reading, have laid aside

our former way of life and acquired a “fresh, spiritual way of thinking” in Christ.

Seminarian Education Fund

Second Collection

August 4th / 5th This weekend!

Please support the Seminarian Education Fund collection taking place in our parish this weekend and continue to pray for vocations in our diocese and throughout the world. This is an invitation to each of us to actively participate in the education and formation of our future priests. Both prayers and financial support are needed and encouraged. The Diocese of Gaylord continues to work hard to create a culture of vocations in which men and women are encouraged to listen for, and respond to, God’s call for their lives. Those efforts are bearing fruit as reflected in the seminarians currently discerning their call to the priesthood for our diocese. Please consider making your gift today as you continue to pray for vocations and our seminarians! You may donate online by logging on to www.dioceseofgaylord.org and clicking on the “Make a Gift” link. Be sure to note your gift is for the Seminarian Education Fund.

Besides the Diocesan mailing: There is an envelope for this

collection included in your August parishioner envelopes.

Additional envelopes, for your convenience, are available in our pews.

Fast Fact The Diocese of

Gaylord has

continued to seek

and receive grant

funding to assist with

seminarian education

and the continuing

formation of priests.

The Diocese intends

to continue those

efforts, but once

more, we do not

know if funding will

be available or in

what amount from

year to year.

August “Change for Charities” To be held second weekend of August

The Change for Charities collection for the month of August will be held the weekend of August 11th / 12th so as not to conflict with the Seminarian Education Fund Collection which takes place annually the first weekend in August.

The August Change for Charities collection will benefit Hope Shores Alliance (formerly known as Shelter, Inc.). Thank you for your understanding!

Do you love the Catholic faith? Do you enjoy working with children, teens or even adults? There are times when we are in need of catechists, aides, substitute catechists or even someone to help make copies or prepare materials for a lesson that will help in the Faith Formation program, Youth Groups, REDD program (Religious Education for Developmentally Disabled), or the RCIA sessions (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults).

If you are someone who loves the Catholic faith and would like to share it with our children, youth and adults. Please call Jackie Benson 354-3019 to volunteer or for more information.

All volunteers who are a catechist or an aide and help with the above programs, must fill out a back-ground check and go through the Virtus training.

Through your baptism you were called to be a disciple…..share your Catholic faith with others.

More Funeral Luncheon Workers Needed

Due to the large number of funeral luncheons we have had since the merger, we would like to form more groups. We need both men and women who are willing to set-up and clean-up. If you have a few hours to give once or twice a month, we need YOU!

To volunteer or ask for more information, please call Pam Boyk at 356-1721 or the parish office at 354-3019. Please consider joining this worthwhile endeavor. Thank you!

REMINDER

The ministry schedule for lectors, EM’s
