In celebration of the Generics Month of September, the pharmacists of DOH – Region IX conducted RationalUseofMedicines (RUM) Caravan last September 27 to 29, 2016 to fifty mothers per provinces identified by the Local Govern-ment Units (LGUs). The pharmacists, led by Ms. Vic-Vic L. Camaongay, National Drug Policy Compliance Officer of Region IX conducted the said event in three (3) provinces: Sibugay Grand Hotel on the 27th for Zamboanga Sibugay Province, Dipolog City Hall fourth floor on the 28th for Zamboanga del Norte, and on the 29th in San Jose Barangay Hall in Pagadian City for Zamboanga del Sur. Various topics of basic issues of the use of medicines which are commonly committed by the patients were addressed. The negative results of such mistake to our body were also stressed out by the speakers. According to Ms. Camaongay, the misuse of medicines is the primary reason why a patient usually complains for being given with an “ineffective” medicine. The intended medicinal effect may unlikely be seen due to the misuse which could further lead to the worsening of the condition, more medical check-ups, more medicines, more expenses, and more discomforts. She also added that taking less than what is prescribed could also lead to underdosage which, especially in antimicrobial medicines, leaves the microbes still surviving and not yet killed causing the disease to recur and get worse. One underlying cause of not having the prescribed medicines exactly complied is because of their high cost. Thus, Ms. Tasneem Amping elaborated the Generics Act and compared the branded with the generic ones – which gives same result in their effectivity as supported by medical studies she showed. She pushed to use generic medicines instead especially for the economically challenged, so to meet the medical needs of every individual. She also discouraged the Brand Mentality mindset of every consumer since both the branded and generic similarly contain the active ingredient which brings the intended effect. Seconded by Mr. Andre Cahayag, the Essential Drug Price Monitoring System (EDPMS) officer, he introduced the prices of medicines regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). He showed the Drug Price Watch list of medicines with their corresponding prices. He emphasized that such list must be found in the counter of every drug store as it serves to be a guide for consumers in choosing which specific entity to buy economically-wise. He told that pharmacies should not exceed the prices, nor do underpricing, but must fall their prices within the range. On the other hand, Ms. Thelma Sumatra also informed the mothers of the DOH programs and the medicines and commodities available in the Rural Health Unit. She encour-aged them to avail as the medicines are given for free. Just let

the patient submit himself to the nearest government health facility and the personnel therein will guide the patient. Along with enabling the patients to buy the exact quantity as prescribed, Ms. Mitushiela Julio educated the audience what quality medicines really mean. She showed some images of good quality tablets, capsules, and other dosage forms, and what they and their packaging should look like before taking or using them. She also specified proper storage of certain medicines, whether by room temperature or by refrigeration, and remind-ed to be keen with expiry dates. Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR) awareness was then followed by Mr. Jessie Dabar Carbon and the possible recurring condition it would cause. Declined potency of antibiotics toward microbes is usually caused by improper taking of antibiotics as being taken like candies. He mentioned that people immediately use these medicines for their headache, fever, cough and colds and for little wounds, seeing it as a magic pill for all diseases – which should not be so. He said that these medicines are very broad but selective; that is, there are numerous kinds of this drug classification, thus must be prescribed before using. For if there is prescription, it means the patient must already have consulted a doctor. Mr. Carbon also warned about the negative effects these drugs bring when the regimen is stopped without doctor’s notice. Ms. Camaongay recapped the orientation and clarified to the mothers of their moral responsibility in the family, therefore chosen to be the target of the event.

“Dahil kayo ang ilaw ng tahanan, kayo ang nanay, ang nurse, ang doctor, ang makaka-decide para sa kalusugan ng inyong pamilya, kaya pinili namin

kayo”

(Because you are the light in the house, you are the mother, the nurse, the doctor, the one who would decide for the health of your family, that’s why we chose you).”

The Breastfeeding Awareness theme for this year is about how Breastfeeding will serve as a key element in getting us to think about how to value our wellbeing from the start of life, how to respect each other and care for the world we share. It also commemorates the start of Sustaina-ble Development Goals (SDGs). It also enables the Breastfeeding Movement to

connect with variety of development issues on the next 15 years (2030) for maximum impact. Breastfeeding on the other hand is linked to SDGs in several ways.

The objective of the Breastfeeding Awareness Month is to inform people about the new SDGs and how they relate to breastfeeding and In-fant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF), to firmly anchor breastfeeding as a key component to SDGs, to galvanize a variety of actions at all level on breastfeeding and IYCF in the new era of the SDGs and to engage and collaborate with a wider range of actors around promo-tion, protection and support of breastfeeding.

Below are possible links between each of the Sustainable Development Goals and Breast-feeding:

NOPOVERTY

Breastfeeding contributes to poverty reduc-tion, natural and low-cost way of feeding infants and children;

ZEROHUNGER

Breastfeeding means food and security for infants up to 2 years and beyond;

GOODHEALTH&WELL‐BEING

Breastfeeding significantly improves health and development and survival of infants and children. It also contributes to improved health and wellbeing of mothers;

QUALITYEDUCATION

Breastfeeding and adequate Complemen-tary Feeding are fundamentals for readiness to learn;

GENDEREQUALITY

Breastfeeding is a great equalizer giving every child a fare and best start in life. BF is uniquely a right of women and they should be supported by society to breastfeed optimally;

CLEANWATERANDSANITATION

Breastfeeding on demand provides all the water an infant needs, even in hot weather. On the other hand, formula feeding requires access to clean water, hygiene and sanitation;

AFFORDABLEANDCLEAN

ENERGY

Breastfeeding entails less energy compared to formula production in industries, it reduces the need for water, firewood which fossils fuel in the home;

DECENT WORK AND ECONOMICGROWTH

Breastfeeding women who are supported by their employers are more productive and loyal. Maternity protection and other workplace policies enable women to combine BF and work;

INDUSTRY, INNOVATION ANDINFRASTRUCTURE

With industrialization and urbanization, time and space become more challenging for mothers who need to work outside the home, and they need to manage these challenges. Lactation Rooms and Lactation Breaks can make a difference;

REDUCEDINEQUALITIES

Breastfeeding practices differ across the globe. Breastfeeding needs to be protected, promoted and supported in particular among the [poor and vulnerable groups which would help reduce inequalities;

SUSTAINABLE CITIES ANDCOMMUNITIES

In big cities, Breastfeeding mothers and infants need to be safe and welcome in all public spaces;

RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTIONANDPRODUCTION

Breastfeeding provides a healthy viable, non-polluting, non-resource intensive sustainable and natural source of nutrition and sustenance;

CLIMATEACTION

Breastfeeding safeguards infant’s health and nutrition in times of adversity and weather related disasters due to global warming;

LIFEBELOWWATER

Breastfeeding entails less waste compared to formula feeding, industrial formula production and distribution lead to waste that pollutes the seas and affects marine life;

LIFEONLAND

Breastfeeding is ecological compared to formula production, it implies dairy farming that often puts pressure on natural resources and contributes to carbon emissions and climate change;

PEACE AND JUSTICE STRONGINSTITUTIONS

Breastfeeding is enshrined in many human rights framework and conven-tions. Policies to protect and support BF mothers and children are needed to ensure that these Rights are upheld;

PARTNERSHIPFORTHEGOALS

Global strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding fosters multi-sectoral collabora-tions and can build upon various partnerships to support development through breastfeeding programs and initiatives.

Given these list of Sustainable Development Goals, we all

have to play a part in achieving these goals by 2030.
