BAYADA RegattaNational Adaptive Rowing Regatta

August 17, 2019 H Schuylkill River, Philadelphia, PASponsored by: BAYADA Home Health CareHosted by: Philadelphia Adaptive Rowing

In the summer of 1981, a small group of rowers launched their boats into the Schuylkill River and made history. They were the first adaptive rowers to be part of what has grown to be one of the largest all-adaptive rowing events in the world, bringing people together in the spirit of fun and friendly competition.

BAYADA Home Health Care thanks Philadelphia Adaptive Rowing (PAR) for providing recreational and competitive rowing opportunities. We recognize the rowers, coordinators, volunteers, friends, and family members that make this inspiring event a success year after year.

Club Profiles Below is information on some of the many clubs participating in the 2019 BAYADA Regatta

Athletes Without Limits

Athletes Without Limits (AWL) provides athletes with intellectual disability the opportunity to compete at their highest level—from mainstream sport to the US Paralympic Team—and is the US member of the international federation for athletes with an intellectual disability (ID), INAS. The rowing program is based in Washington, DC and is hosted by DC Strokes Rowing Club, where the athletes are integrated in club activities to promote inclusion with a “ONE TEAM” motto. With 18 ID athletes around the US, it is AWL’s mission to help all programs build their ID rowing community. www.DCSports.AthletesWithoutLimits.org

Capital Adaptive Rowing Program

Capital Adaptive Rowing Program (CARP) is a community-based rowing program located in Washington, DC. Started in 2009 and housed from the Anacostia Community Boathouse, CARP is an active and growing club, consisting of athletes from a variety of backgrounds, including but not limited to those with spinal cord injury, Parkinson’s, MS, amputations, intellectual disability, stroke, and visual impairments. All athletes are trained in the sport of adaptive rowing to promote competitive, recreational, and overall fitness goals while being part of a greater rowing community. CARP athletes compete in local regattas as well as at the national and world level. CARP is proud to return to BAYADA this year with a few new faces in addition to “veteran” BAYADA participants. Go CARP!

Des Moines Rowing Club

Des Moines Rowing Club’s Adaptive Membership Initiative (DMRC-AMI) strives to make the sport of rowing available to all interested individuals, no matter their abilities. Our goal is to develop personal character, an ethic of cooperation, and physical fitness within the ultimate team culture of crew and to provide competitive

opportunities to those who are interested. The true success of rowing is to bring mind and body into coordination as one. We provide specialized equipment and training to people with a variety of mental and physical challenges, helping them compete to the best of their abilities. Des Moines Rowing Club’s first adaptive boat was a gift from BAYADA and is named the “Ann and Mark Baiada.” Of course we call her the Baiada. She is a single shell and a favorite of our master rowers who no longer need to be in a double. Ann and Mark’s gift keeps on giving to our club and its adaptive members.

Halifax Rowing Association

The Halifax Rowing Association (HRA-Daytona Beach, FL) introduced the Adaptive Rowing Program in late 2012 to improve the quality of life for individuals living with vision or mobility issues. HRA’s Adaptive Program continues to grow and sustain because of the participants, volunteers, and a new partnership with Brooks Rehabilitation. Bob Van Twyver, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University men’s crew coach, is now the head coach for the adaptive rowing program. Elizabeth Murphy is the program coordinator from Brooks Adaptive Sports and Recreation–Daytona. They offer two separate rowing

programs on water, one for individuals with vision impairments, and one for individuals with mobility issues. The Wednesday erging class is open to all. Fun, fitness, and friendship is the motto of one team pulling together.

Club Profiles (continued)

Holyoke Rows

Holyoke Rows is a non-profit community organization located at Jones Ferry River Access Center along the Connecticut River in Holyoke, MA. Our mission is to provide a wide variety of rowing opportunities to serve as many of our community members as possible. To that end, we coach high school and masters crew teams, offer an adult “learn to

row” curriculum, and run an adaptive rowing program for people with disabilities. During the summer we run youth camps to give local children an introduction to kayaking and rowing. We also maintain an active club membership of experienced rowers.

Johnson & Johnson

The J&J Rowing Club was founded in 2014 and offers learn-to-row, novice, intermediate, and advanced training and racing programs for Johnson & Johnson colleagues and retirees in central New Jersey and southeast Pennsylvania. The members are coached by staff of the Raritan Valley Rowing Club, Fairmount Rowing Club, and Princeton National Rowing Association. The team regularly competes in corporate challenge or mixed masters events at Dad Vail, Navy Day, Quaker City, and Head of the Charles Regattas. Consistent with our credo and our mission to DO GOOD BE WELL, J&J Rowing is proud to provide funding and volunteers for the BAYADA Regatta.

Lake Sunapee Rowing Club

Lake Sunapee Rowing Club was founded in 2007 by two avid female rowers. They believe that they row on the most beautiful water in the northeast: Lake Sunapee, NH. They offer learn-to-row, novice, intermediate, advanced, and racing programs. Their small junior and adaptive programs also offer coaching in all aspects of rowing. The volunteers for these two programs are dedicated club members who

want to share their love of the sport. Currently they have 50 members, five of whom are adaptive rowers. This year will be the fifth year that one of their adaptive rowers has raced in the BAYADA Regatta.

New Orleans Rowing Club

Formed in 1987, the New Orleans Rowing Club (NORC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization run solely by volunteers. NORC offers adaptive, novice, club, and masters programs in sweep rowing and sculling. As of 2015, NORC is located at the Frederick J. King Boathouse on Bayou St. John, at the Vistas Shores Assisted Living Center grounds.

The New Orleans Rowing Club is committed to promoting interest, development, advancement, and activity in the sport of rowing. NORC is a volunteer-directed, educational organization offering rowing instruction (including sculling and sweep) for

people of all ages and skill levels—from novices to juniors to masters, and from the casual to the obsessed! NORC offers the benefits of the recreational and competitive rowing—discipline, camaraderie, fitness, and the knowledge of water safety. We are a community bound together by our appreciation for this unique institution, our devotion to the sport, and our love for the great Bayou St. John!

Row New York

Row New York began in 2002 with the simple idea that competitive rowing paired with rigorous academic support for underserved youth could change the trajectory of their teen years and beyond. We have since taught thousands of young people the sport of rowing, and through it, the values of tenacity, focus, teamwork, and confidence. Now with three locations in New York City, Row New York’s mission is to empower people with disabilities to achieve their personal competitive and health goals through the rigorous

discipline of rowing by building a community of trust, motivation, and high expectations.

Philadelphia Adaptive Rowing

Philadelphia Adaptive Rowing (PAR) is the host club of the BAYADA Regatta. The PAR boathouse is located in Philadelphia on the Schuylkill River, upriver from Philadelphia’s famous Boathouse Row. Started in 1980, PAR represents the birthplace of adaptive rowing in the United States. PAR was instrumental in achieving adaptive rowing inclusion in the Paralympics and in the creation of the first US adaptive rowing team to participate in the World Rowing Championships at St. Catherine’s Canada. Six-time World Champion and Paralympian Scott Brown was a member of PAR, as was 2008 bronze medal Paralympian Laura Schwanger. PAR has a very active program in both recreational as well as competitive rowing with 40-plus rowers each year and an equal number of volunteers. PAR is a program of the Pennsylvania Center for Adapted Sports.

Sportable

Sportable is an adaptive sports club located in Richmond, VA and was founded in 2005 with a mission of “creating opportunities and transforming lives.” Sportable’s goal is to transform lives of individuals with physical disabilities and visual impairments through sport. Sportable offers 12 different adaptive sports throughout the year to athletes with physical

disabilities or visual impairments. One of Sportable’s programs is adaptive rowing, in which partnerships with the Virginia Boat Club and Richmond Community Rowing help lead to a successful program serving a wide range of athletes.

Three Rivers Rowing Association

The Three Rivers Rowing Association (TRRA) is located in Pittsburgh, PA. The TRRA Adaptive Program was started in 1987. Their rowers primarily row on the Allegheny River, but several of their stalwart team members routinely make the three-mile row down to “The Point,” where the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers meet to form the Ohio River. Over 200 members have participated in their adaptive program, with a focus on both recreational as well as competitive rowing. TRRA is one of the first adaptive rowing programs in the US and is home to several competitive rowers. TRRA adaptive rowers have won numerous National Championship titles, starting with the BAYADA Regatta. Two TRRA athletes were among the rowers who helped lay the foundation for adaptive rowing to be a Paralympic sport when they raced in the 1999 FISA World Championships. At this event, adaptive rowing was introduced for the first time and was the first step in getting FISA (world rowing organization) to recognize adaptive rowing as an official sport. In 2013,

TRRA was designated as a Paralympic Sport Club, meaning it serves as a development club for athletes who have Paralympic ambitions. Most recently, TRRA became a bronze level Paralympic Sport Club in 2016.

This Year’s Featured Face of the Regatta— 32-year-old Danny WheelerDanny Wheeler, a resident of Medford, NJ with spina bifida, had originally competed in wheelchair races dating back to 1995. From a young age, Danny learned that never giving up was important, which he credits to his parents, Billy and Joan Wheeler. Billy and Joan, originally from Michigan, have raised 9 children—6 adopted and 3 of their own. As a 7th grade science teacher, Billy especially emphasized to his children to not feel bad for themselves and stay focused on their goals. When Danny got involved with the Pennsylvania Center for Adapted Sports (PCAS), his parents were thrilled. “Keeping him busy

was our goal,” says Wheeler’s mother Joan. “It gives him more independence.”

Danny’s discipline has helped him become a competitive rower, and he has been rowing for the last 10 years personally, and as part of the BAYADA Regatta. He loves meeting new people and socializing with other rowers. His advice to others with disabilities who are considering rowing or other adaptive sports? “Don’t let limitations get in your way.”

Rowing has become a family passion, and Danny’s older sister Melissa, also diagnosed with spina bifida, rows in the BAYADA

Regatta each year. She competes in different heats than Danny, and swims, bikes, and goes skiing in addition to rowing for exercise. “Go for it!” says Melissa. “It doesn’t matter if you have a disability.”

This fall, Maddie Jones, 19, enters her sophomore year at Pamona College, a small liberal arts school east of Los Angeles, CA. She’s home for the summer in her native Philadelphia suburbs, where she’s been rowing with the Philadelphia Adaptive Rowing club since she was in eighth grade.

Maddie first heard about the club through the Pennsylvania Center for Adapted Sports, where she used to ski. And all through high school, her primary sport was competitive wheelchair basketball. Now, Maddie’s main athletic focus—in the summer, when she has the time and opportunity—has turned to adaptive rowing.

“The BAYADA Regatta is special because it’s the only one that’s all adaptive,” she tells us. “I like the fair competition you can’t get anywhere else. It’s the one time every year I can truly compete in races that are evenly matched by gender and physical ability.”

Maddie was born with cerebral palsy, a movement disorder that, for her, impacts her strength and muscle control in her lower extremities. Her physical impairment is mild, so on land she gets around independently with braces, a walker, a wheelchair, and a car. On water, she uses an adaptive boat.

Maddie competes in other local boat races that lump all adaptive rowers into one category. But here, she can compete as a Women’s PR2—meaning she can see how she does against similarly-abled women who also row “trunk and arms,” without using their legs.

“I’ve always rowed doubles, and every year since 2014 I’ve come in either first or second place at the BAYADA Regatta. Granted, some of those races were unopposed,” she laughs. “This year, we’ll see what race I end up in. I’m thinking about rowing single, which will be my next big challenge. In doubles,

you just have to focus on rowing as fast as you can. As a single, you have to steer and manage the entire race yourself.”

We can’t wait to see how she does!

The Leo Reilly Award is an annual commemoration of the life and spirt of Leo Reilly, one of Philadelphia Rowing Program’s very first rowers. As a blind, single amputee with diabetes, Reilly rowed with the Philadelphia Rowing Program for more than five years. For the past two decades, this award has continued his legacy of passion and determination by honoring rowers with physical disabilities who thrive on and off the water with an energy and zest for life.
