Where did the Cheyenne tribe live? The Cheyenne Tribe’s habitat/home was the Great Plains. The mountains around the Great Plains form its boundaries. Many states are found in this region such as, South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, Colorado, and Kansas.

What was the geography of their land?

In the Great Plains where the Cheyenne lived there were two major land features, plains and plateaus. A plateau is an area of high ground and is commonly found in large plains. A plain is a large area with few trees. There were waterways in the form of rivers and streams. These rivers and streams had more than one use, Cheyenne people built little rafts to travel, drinking water, and food.

What was their climate? The climate in the great plains region had many different weather conditions. For instance, the winter had freezing temperatures, but in the summer it was hot and dry. It didn’t rain very much. Hail, blizzards, tornadoes, and dust storms were common.

What were their natural resources? The Cheyenne Tribe had many different natural resources that were important to their survival.

● Fertile soil was needed to grow the Cheyenne’s crops for food. They harvested corn, squash, and bean plants for food.

● The grass and grains growing in the plains was used to feed the Cheyenne’s horses. The grass of the plains also attracted buffalo that the Cheyenne needed for food.

● Horses were used for transportation and to help the Cheyenne hunt Buffalo. ● Birch Trees were needed to make shelter and homes. ● Rivers provided water for drinking, fish for food, and sometimes travel.

What did they use for shelter?Wigwams are dome shaped shelters that the Cheyenne lived in. Wigwams were 8-10 feet tall and a whole family would live in one.

Tipis are another shelter that the Cheyenne used. Tipis are a tent shape shelter. Originally tipis were 12 feet high, but once the Cheyenne acquired horses, they began building them twice as high. An interesting fact about the tipi is the Cheyenne could take them down within an hour!

What did they eat?The Cheyenne tribe hunted lots of animals such as: deer, sometimes fish, and lots and lots of buffalo. To hunt the buffalo the women drove them towards the men who then shot them with their bows. To hunt the fish they easily went fishing in the closest river or pond. After they hunted the animals, they would have to prepare the food. Meat was commonly roasted over fires or grilled on hot stones and fish were often smoked. They also gathered berries and harvested corn, squash, and beans. The Cheyenne tribe were originally farming people, but after they started using horses they started to become more migratory. The Cheyenne stopped farming because they didn’t stay in one spot very long, so they didn’t have time to farm.
