The plants of AmarylJidaceae family altracts a great attention due to the synthesis ofof speci fic alkaloids, with a wide range of bio logical and pharmacological activi ties such asx for
tide s AC hE inhib itory, citotoxic, an tiviral, an tifun gal among ot hers (Bas tida et al., 2006). One ofthem, galanthamine is a long acting AC hE inh ibi tor markete d for the treatment of
elop Alzheimer 's disease, Although chem ical syn the sis of galantharnine has been successfullyia ! inperfo rmed (Selles et al ., 199 7) , the ma in commercial sources for the production of thegalantharnine-based med icines are Arnaryllidaceae plan ts (Pav lov et al., 2007), Nowadays, prescription regime of the utilization of more of these plant species has been imposed and, from these perspectives, gala nthami ne production from in vitro cultures is consider ed andrug
te ly attrac tive alternative.or Leucojum aestivum L. (Amaryllidaceae), known as summer snowflake, is a threatened
plant speci es that is currently used as a commercial source of galantharnine in Bulgaria . It isgathered from the natural habitats for ind ustrial purposes, which causes inc reasing pro blemswith depletion of the wi ld populations.
Pancratium maritimum L. (sea daffodil) is a bul biferous plant belonging to the familyknot-93 Arnary llidaceac . It grows at ext reme enviro nmental conditions in sal ty and sandy soils alongfor the coastl ines of the Mediterranean, the Atlantic, the Black, and Caspian seas. Previous
ph ytochem ical studies resulted in identification of a num ber of bioactive alkaloids includingand ga lanthamine as we ll as several phenolic compounds ,ppl
