Media Evaluation

Media Evaluation

Alice Wiggins

Introduction

My project for our A2 Advanced Portfolio in Media (Unit G324) I decided to create a performance based music video of a montage from different performances. The band are hard to define as one genre so I had a wide range of ideas such as concept and narrative vidoes. I began by researching a recent artist Katy B and her simular genre of dub-step used performance in her video On a mission. I also looked at how different genres of music had a certain Brand Identity

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media product?

In Music Video

An effective way of showing If I have followed the forms and conventions is to refer back to Goodwins principle I studied and commented on my blog.

Here is the Goodwin Principles I researched in class

In my video, I differed from the typical performance based music video by deciding to use real live footage and creating a montage video. I think my video challenges typical performance videos offering something new to the genre which keeps the viewer entertained.I think my innovations have prove successful as removing storyline footage and focusing on the rehearsal of the band leading to their performance the builds its own narrative that is rawer than a narrative video.I think my choices have worked effectively and appeals to all audiences and includes voyeurism, but members our audience in feedback said that more transitions need to be made on the beat.

Record Companies will demand a lot of close-ups of the main artist/s

Below is an example of a performance based video against a print screen of my video. You can distinctly see I have used a close-up shot but challenged the convention by having a in-direct close-up.

Goodwin's Theory

The still (pictured right) is a high angle panning shot I took at the gig. The special effect I added created a hazy effect matching the lyrics Im deluded. This still of the drummer pushing Craig appears violent but is actually a comical staged act they do at most concerts. The lyrics Craig is signing before are about getting rowdy.

What do want to get rowdy for'?- suggesting violence- Paul pushing Craig of his drum-kit

Lyrics Matching Visuals

rowdy.pngIntertexuality

I deliberately haven't used intertexuality as I wanted to focus simply on the artist and documenting how they behave on and off stage. This is unlike performance based video by GreenDay that does have intertextualty of a green flag and talking about the society of America.

Use of Voyeurism

I used voyeurism in my video my showing a tilt shot of Niki the lead vocalist followed up by a shot of a band member admiring her.

voyeuirsm.pngUse of Star image MotifI have used star image motif of Paul consecutively creating a Pseudo narrative. The first clip we see him communicating with a band member and then having a discussion with another person. The fact he is dressed as a clown and looking serious goes against convention.
