Too Weird To Live, Too Rare To Die

Panic! At The Disco

Page 2: Album cover analysis - Tahsin

The album cover is mostly in shades of grey and black. This connotes a more dark theme to their music where the songs are about serious and surreal things.

This is the only part on the album cover that is in colour. This could suggest that although the album is mainly dark and atmospheric there are some light hearted songs. Or this could be fake as the smoke is coming out of a cigarette – something that is considered harmful.

He is the frontman of the band, Brendan Urie. He is in a dark suit which matches the album’s dark colours and lighting. This creates a sense of mystery about the album and him., this is reinforced by the fact that he isn't looking at the camera.

The background is a desert area with derelict buildings in the back. This is similar to the setting of the song “Miss Jackson”.

In the album name the words “live” and “die” are in italics. These words are the antithesis of each other. This could mean that the sings in this album have both negative and positive themes.

The exclamation in the band’s title name is their trademark. This sign is incorporated in the music video of one of their songs “Miss Jackson”. This allows the audience to know that this music video was by the band. It lets people know easily who they are.

Miss Jackson...This shot has the frontman, Brendan, in it. He is in most of the shots. This shows his leading role in the band which is typical as most rock bands have a lead singer. Moroever his costume is similar to the one he is wearing in the album cover. His costume here links the two images together.

In these two shots Brendan is standing in front of an exclamation mark which is associated with the band. These shots emphasize Panic! At The Disco as a band. It allows the fans to know that this is their image. Moreover the lighting is dark – like the album cover. This shows that album covers and music videos link and are similar to establish an artist’s genre and style.

...Miss JacksonThese two shots have the smokey atmosphere similar to the album cover. The sue of smoke creates a sense of unease and secrecy. This is sued to highlight the band’s new album theme – songs that are surreal and weird. Moreover the shots are again shot in low lighting. Most of the video has low lighting and was shot during the night. This enhances the dark atmosphere created by the album cover.
