Albert the Astronaut

Albert is calculating how many times he

will orbit the Earth during his 114.1 hour

stay on the International Space Station.

It orbits the Earth every 0.7 hours, so

how many time will he complete an

orbit?

Unfortunately Albert’s calculator is in a geostationary orbit around Earth after he dropped it on a space walk!

Boris the Baker

Boris is working out how much to

charge Mrs Smith, who bought 12

cupcakes at £1.34 each and 9 donuts

at £0.56 each. How much change will

Mrs Smith get from £30?

Unfortunately Boris baked his calculator after his dozy apprentice Bernard left it on the donut tray.

Charlie the Channel Swimmer

Charlie is working out how far she has

actually swam on her 34 channel swims.

The English Channel measures 21.2

miles at its shortest width which is the

route Charlie takes. How far has she

swam?

Unfortunately Charlie’s calculator got dropped in a vat of goose fat on her last attempt!

Derek the Dentist

Derek is working out how much more

of Mr Jones’ rotten tooth could still

lie within his gum after it broke as

he pulled it out. The fragment he

pulled out was 0.74cm long and the

average tooth length is 3.4cm. How

much more does he have to dig out?

Unfortunately Derek’s nurse Dorothy spilled some false teeth cleaner over the office calculator!

Egbert the Engineer

Egbert is trying to work out how

many more ball bearings he can make

from the 67.92kg of steel he has

left. Each ball bearing weighs 0.12kg

on average, so can he satisfy his

customer who has just ordered 570?

Unfortunately Egbert’s calculator was crushed by the ball bearing machine!

Florence the Financial Advisor

Florence is advising a client who is making

an investment. The investment is worth

£34.56 every month for the next 2 years.

How much is the investment worth in

total, given that Florence will charge her

client £69 for the advice? Unfortunately Florence had to sell her calculator to make ends meet!

Gerard the Gym Instructor

Gerard is trying to work out how much

weight he is lifting. He has four 2.6kg

weights as well as six 5.6kg weights on the

bar he is lifting. Has he reached his target

of being able to lift 50kg?

Unfortunately Gerard dropped a dumbbell on his calculator!

Ingrid the Interior Designer

Ingrid is working out the area of

four walls which she needs to paint.

Each wall measures 10.4m by 2.3m.

What is the total area of the walls in

this square room? Unfortunately Ingrid dropped her calculator in a pot of paint!

Judy the Juggler

Judy is working out how many times

a ball will complete a circuit in her

one minute juggling routine. Each

circuit takes 1.2 seconds, so how

many circuits will in complete in her

routine?

Ironically Judy dropped her calculator and broke it!

Kevin the Kayak Instructor

Kevin is calculating the cost of

buying a new fleet of kayaks for his

15 strong group of learner kayakers.

If Each kayak costs £234.90 plus a

one off delivery charge of £35.99,

Leona is working out how many crates

she can safely load onto her lorry. Her

lorry can hold a maximum of 5 tonnes

and each crate weighs 0.3 tonnes. Can

she take the consignment of 18 crates

in one trip?

Unfortunately Leona ran over her calculator in her lorry!

Marty the Mechanic

Marty is trying to tell a customer

how much further she can drive

before her next service. The

service must take place after the

car has done 50000miles and

currently the odometer reads

49869.5miles. How many more times

can the customer make her commute

of 0.9 miles before the service?

Unfortunately Marty’s fingers are too oily to press the buttons on his calculator!

Harold the Hairdresser

Harold needs to work out the profit he

will receive from one customer’s

appointment. He charges her £55 but

Nelly the Naval Officer

Nelly is calculating the total weight of

the torpedoes being delivered to her

submarine for buoyancy purposes. She

knows each torpedo weights 3.56 tonnes

and there are 8 torpedoes being

delivered. How much extra weight in

total should she allow for?

Nelly’s calculator was unfortunately stolen by her elderly superior who mistook it for his mobile phone.

Ollie is trying to work out a patient’s final

bill. Her new glasses cost her £220.50,

her appointment cost £17.60 and she is

treating herself to a new glasses case at

£7.95. What is the final bill Ollie should

present her with?

Quentin the Quarryman

In Quentin’s quarry there is a minimum

depth which needs to be drilled each day

in order to get paid. This depth is 16.7m,

and before lunch Quentin drilled 6.78m.

How much further does he have to drill

to make sure he is paid?

Unfortunately Quentin dropped his calculator and his ‘friend’ Quincy destroyed it with a pneumatic drill.

Roger the Rugby Player

Roger is trying to work out the area of

his rugby pitch in order to see how much

weed-killer he needs to buy (he’s sick of

getting stung by thistles during rooks!)

He measured it to be 133.4 yards long

and 74.3 yards wide. What is the area in

square yards?

Unfortunately Roger left his calculator in his pocket during a scrum, big mistake!

Sally the Stuntwoman

Sally has 6.9kg of TNT. Each explosion

which the director wants her to jump

her motorcycle over requires 0.3kg of

TNT in order to ensure it looks ’death

defying’ enough. How many more takes

can Sally afford to perform?

Unfortunately Sally destroyed her calculator in a freak TNT accident.

The batting team need 75 runs to

win. The batsman ask Umberto if

their current run rate, 5.67 runs per

over, is enough to win in the 13 overs

remaining. At this rate, will they get

the 75 runs remaining? (multiply the

run rate by the number of overs

left).

Unfortunately Umberto left his calculator back in the pavilion!

he weights all 7 together and it comes to

23.8 ounces. How much on average does

each kitten weigh?

Unfortunately Victor’s calculator was trodden on by an angry horse.

machine has 13.8kJ of charge left.

How many more X-rays can Xander

carry out today?

Unfortunately Xander’s calculator was fried when he left it near the X-ray machine!
