Hello Everyone! I’ve got some good news for members who love our ABYC breakfast burritos as much as I do. Due to popular

demand, the Galley will now be open for breakfastand lunch each weekend this winter, with the hoursbeing extended to 9am to 2pm. So come on downand get that world-renowned breakfast burrito thatyou’ve been craving.

Some more good news, the outdated fireplacein the Quarterdeck was just recently replaced with a sleek, new and improved,easy-to-operate fireplace. To use the fireplace, simply open up the panel on

the bottom, and slide the switch over tothe “ON” position. It’s that simple! We’veclearly labeled the panel and put upinstructions on the wall nearby so everyone will know how to operate our new fireplace. So, now that the Winter weather is upon us, you can still stay nice and warm whileenjoying the view from the Quarterdeck. We’ve also put a microwave in the Quarterdeck, and a Keurig coffeemaker that was donated to the club by Dana Bell. She’s alsodonated a supply of coffee singles for the coffeemaker, and would ask that memberskindly donate a buck for a cup of coffee, which will go towards purchasing more coffeesingles. We’ll have a box to put your donation in which will rely on the honor system.Thank you Dana, for helping us improve our member’s enjoyment of the Club!

On a final note, I would like to thank Cindy Heavrin and Kathy Reed for all of theirhard work in planning and organizing the Racing Rules Seminar on January 16th.Everyone who attended the seminar really seemed to enjoy it, and learned a lot too.So don’t be surprised if we hold another Rules Seminar sometime in the near future! Thanks again Cindy and Kathy!

All it takes is a visit to another state to realize how good we have it here at ABYC! While others are battling torrential rain storms or snow storms which shut down their cities and states we have

enjoyed the balmy winterweather we have becomeaccustomed to. Yes, it hassprinkled a bit on us butwe have been able to sailif we wished to, no

shoveling of snow or breaking the ice!Your Board of Directors continues to improve

the club. We now have a new fireplace in the QuarterDeck, no more singeing the hair on your eyebrowsor arms when you light it! Please ask for instructionson lighting it the first time you use it. Soon we willhave a new motorized movie screen in the upper deckof the club house, better to see you with!

Our hard working Fleet Engineers, ChuckHardin and Dave Crocket have begun therevitalization of the outrage! Please give them a calland offer your skills! It is a big project!

Yes, the club will be having a Super Bowl event. There is acompetition for the best munchies! This event is being led by JorgeSuarez, Thanks Jorge!

I would like to thank Mark Townsend and all of our memberswho attended the scoring seminar. It is one of the key positionswhich needs to be done well for our club to offer sailors the highlevel of race management they have come to expect from our club!

I was happy to see a number of boat owners draining thelakes from their covers and rinsing the growth out of their cockpits! There are still a number of boats which have not beentouched. Remember boats need a little TLC. If you do not have the time or inclination to do so please think about sellingyour boat or moving it out of the yard so that other members can have a spot in the yard and use their boats!

See you at your club!Latham Bell

Our busy race season is almost upon us. Mid- Winters, Manning, Laser

Midwinters all within thenext two months. To prepare forthis we have been busy onpreparing our fleet of racemanagement boats. Patience isgetting new bottom paint,

engines are being repaired and tuned, Whalers fixedup and thanks to Chuck Hardin and Dave CrocketOutrage is getting a much needed facelift.

I am happy to say that we successfullycompleted our scoring training on January 24th. MarkTownsend taught a group of 13 volunteers the theintricacies of race scoring. For such a small fleet, theSnowbirds sure are competitive.

On February 28th we plan on holding a Whaler training session. The training will include some presentations andpractical, on-the-water training. We are looking for old hands and newbies to attend. We will be reviewing the properselection, use and care of race equipment and we will conduct some practical exercises on Whaler operation and how toproperly set marks. Please let me know as soon as possible if you can attend.

perspectivejunior

At 9 AM on Sunday, January 17, the Wilson High School’s Team Racing team arrived in San Diego for the Harold Adam’s Team Racing Regatta. Team Racing is when two teams of three boats each race to get the lowest points and win. The previous

months Sawyer Gibbs, Roxy Snyder, Jack Berg, Alan Peoples, Christina Van Dyke, andmyself, Hailey Thompson had been practicing for the event. On the first day, we racedeight other teams ending the day with a successful six wins. Within the two races our teamended up in several fouls with most dealt out on the water with the jury but one was takento the room by Sawyer. Unfortunately his protest got disallowed and we ended up losingthe race. San Diego Yacht Club decided to have an on the water jury with the two teams coaches on board to call the fouls. If a protest was called and the opponent didn’t spin the protester could call jury where the two coaches would discuss thefoul and call it a no foul, take the foul to the room, or for the boat to spin. On Monday, we had five more races and not asquite of a great day as Sunday. Only winning one race the team as a whole wished for more but we waited to here if wewere to continue on to the next round robin. After waiting for a small amount of time, Wilson High School had too manypoints and were therefore incapable to proceed to the next round. Out of fourteen teams including ourselves, we ended upin seventh place. Our team headed home happy with how our regatta went especially being the first team racing event forseveral racers on the team.

Hailey Thompson

Honestly, we didn’t even know where to start with this theme, but otherwise decided we needed to enter. Our forayinto the Island Holiday Celebration took on the opposite of the normal hula skirts and coconuts we thought might beprevalent and our brain storming took us to frostier climes. Igloos, Penguins and Polar Bears on our own floating

island took us in a new direction for our entry. Off came the structure on the Bay Barge to be replaced by the blues andwhites of the far north. It was heads down for the whole day to get this year’s entry headed off for a 6:30PM start.

Sure you could eat your way through the cookie plate next to the float and make helpful comments from thesidelines, but not for long as our gang happily handed anyone in reach a staple gun and a pair of scissors to help. Sooneveryone was in on the effort and before you knew it, we had Sheila and Jennie bundled up and headed out to sea torepresent ABYC with Latham as Captain. Does anything beat the feeling of fresh salt air tousling your hair we askedcoaxing them on board? Getting on the water for the evening for the ABYC staff was a first and they were hooked.

I am pleased to announce that ABYC won the most creative entry. Mission accomplished. Many thanks to themany volunteers who helped for a minute, helped for a day and always say “yes” when the Christmas float crew calls. Wetry to make it a fun and creative day andthankfully can count on lots ofenthusiasm from everyone.

Next year’s theme has beenannounced and it is the The 70th year -A Platinum Celebration. We have beenwanting to build a train for several yearsbut are open to suggestions....the RedCar? Remember, moving parts for theAHHHH factor a must! And we love theprofessionals...that’s you BennieSchwegler our own ace in the holesending us ideas from Shanghai, KathyWeisample graphic artist extraordinaireand Ed Spotsky ensuring we light up thenight!

Thanks everyone, well done!Robin Townsend

board repjunior program

While it is sometimes hard to show excitement about a topic like the future of Youth Sailing, now and then an eventcan shed a bit of light on it and everyone can better understand. The January General Membership Meeting wasone of them. While I was unfortunately in AZ attending a regatta, myself and some other Board Members also

there, were updated with the following email from Dave Schack, which is appropriate for this article:—————————

For those of you who were not able to attend the general membership meeting tonight I wanted to let you knowwhat a great night it was for the Junior Program. The Wilson High School Sailing Team presented their burgee to ABYC. 10 members of the team were introduced by Sawyer Gibbs. Following that, there was a great presentation by Pete Melvinand Allie on Opti’s. There were several Opti sailors present who introduced themselves and a few spoke about Optisailing.

Thanks, Allie for all of your hard work. It is awesome to see so many kids energized and engaged. Also, congratsto the JAC for helping to foster the Junior Program.

Dave Schack.—————————

I’ve written it before, and do so again in stating that a Strong Junior Sailing Program will ensure a strong long termfuture membership. Being a member of JAC (Junior Advisory Committee) and sitting on the Board is allowing me theprivilege to report on this. It has been a long winding road working on this thing called the “Jr. Sailing Program” and it is farfrom ending. Us Elders cannot compare the Junior Sailing Program that we grew up in anymore. It is not the same. It isdifferent. It is always easy to compare back then to now, but other than the actual conversation, pretty meaningless. As wehave seen boats evolve, Training Programs and sailing fleets have also.

Funding is a big part of this and we remain grateful to those of you who are pitching in each month by allowing theclub to take a few dollars more each month. If you have not “checked the box” on your monthly bill, please considerchipping in for as long as you like. And if you have been chipping in, maybe consider the next higher amount? I did it! Avery special thank you goes out to Robert Wright who led the pack of all of us with a very nice flat amount. Thank youRobert. Please make a point to contribute on your next monthly bill… every dollar counts; especially when there areseveral of you chipping in.

On the horizon, we have a long time Member who has broken all known donation records. We plan to purchasesome needed FJs to bolster that side of the High School and Jr. Program as well as needed FJ booms, sails, covers, andsome Opti gear too. Once this has been administrated, I will be happy to share the details, but until then want to bediscreet.

Thank you for reading the foregoing and we appreciate your continued support!May your boatspeed be good and your tactics sound,

P.S. This just in- The horizon mentioned above was reached yesterday. On behalf of Kelli Clinton JAC Director,Allie Blecher, and myself we are thrilled to share with you the extremely kind and generous donation to the Jr. SailingProgram from Ed Feo of $15,000. Personally, I don’t know of appropriate words to describe our feelings and maybe justleave you the reader to understand that this is what ABYC has always been about- it really is the place to be, whether thatbe for sailing and racing enjoyment or pure comradery with a truly humble membership…

In closing, let me reiterate that you can also help by donating each month. Checking the box for what amounts tobe the cost of a breakfast burrito will do a lot for the Jr. Program too when added up among all of us.So buy the future of the Yacht Club a breakfast burrito, and start now!!Thank you Ed.

quiz #17rules answer

Answer:If Yellows spinnaker touches the mark she breaks rule 31, her penalty is a One- Turn Penalty. After he spinnaker touches the mark in posiition1, she gybes in position 2 and completes he tack in position 4. She

has therefore completed a one-turn penalty that complies with rule 44.2 and the protest should be disallowed.Rule 44.2 does not require a boat that takes a One-Turn Penalty to complete a full 360° turn, or a turn of any

particular number of degrees, and it does not prohibit taking the penalty while making another manoeuvre, such as roundingthe mark.

Laser/Radial January Race Clinic On Saturday January 23rd, the ABYC Laser Fleet conducted another Laser

and Radial Race Clinic for fourteen eagerLaser and Laser Radial racers.Jorge Suarez began the session with a chalk-talk on startingwith a great deal of back and forth with his audience.

Following the chalk-talk, Jorge demonstrated how to riga Laser, highlighting the new downhaul, boomvang and outhauloptions for this popular one-design which is the “biggest adultand youth racing class in the world.” After the demonstration, the sailors regrouped in the boatyard around the launch ramp torig their boats, swap ideas and prepare for racing on the Bay.

As itlookedlike thew i n dwas to remain light for the afternoon, Jorge, with assistance fromCindy Heavrin, set-up a start line in the Bay for some short courseraces. In an effort to sharpen our starting line skills, Jorge gaveinstructions for the racers to remain within a box between thecommittee boat and the starting line pin, forcing everyone tomaneuver carefully and prevent being over the line at the start.

Another exercise demanded racers line up on the starting line andattempt to hold their position for one minute prior to the startingsignal. Despite the light conditions, this was not easy and manyfound themselves drifting over the line for a premature start. Theexercises were a challenge and fun way to assess how one needs

Cross. For those of you who missed it, the all day seminarwas like “drinking water from a fire hose”. It was a lot ofrules explained very thoroughly. Instructor Peter Haynescomplimented the attendees by saying “you are showingrespect for your fellow racers and respect for the game bylearning the rules”. The Lido fleet had the attendance of FleetOne from Newport, Fleet Two from Marina Del Rey and FleetSix of Long Beach.

Birth of the Lido Fleet by Fleet founder Dale Berkihiser:THE BIRTH OF LIDO 14 FLEET # 6In the summer of 1958, my wife and I were having

lunch at a restaurant on the edge of Alamitos Bay in LongBeach, when we noticed an attractive two tone colored sloopsailing around the bay. We somehow met the couple that had been sailing it, a Don & Gloria Robertson. The sloop was the14 foot fiberglass Lido 14. It was pretty new and the number was # 38. I had been yearning to build a 26 foot sloop fromscratch, but this Lido 14 was so attractive that we decided to buy one. I was naïve and put out the word that I wanted a usedone but of course it was a new class boat and there were not yet any to be had. W.D. Schock Company’s chief salesmansomehow learned of my desire so he offered to sell Lido 14 # 1 to me. It seems that it had already been sold to a Dr.Littlejohn, but Bill Schock had given the doctor a new one in trade for # 1 which he was using as a demonstrator.

We knew Stan Miller though maintenance of our Sabot. Stan and his wife, Jackie, had been making Sabot parts outof their Garage. Around that time, Stan had given up teaching in order to open his boat selling business. He obtained thelocal rights to sell W.D. Schock’s Lido 14. He knew that we wanted to join ABYC in order to be with the Robertsons andother new Lido 14 owners, so he sponsored our membership in ABYC. He wanted the class to become popular so that hecould sell more boats.

The few Lido 14s in the club started racing together, but more and more new members with their new Lido 14s werenow joining the club. Don Robertson talked others and myself into a having a meeting at our home to discuss the businessof forming an official Lido 14 Fleet. This was sometime during the winter of 1958-59; I forget the exact date. Attending werestaff commodore, Ted Matson, Don Robertson, Gene Juratz, George Lounsberry, & others. Schock’s Lido 14 Class Associationhad assigned number SIX to our fleet, and I was elected to be first Fleet Captain and the important job of secretary wasassigned to Don Robertson. So, Alamitos Bay Lido 14 Fleet # 6 was born during the winter of 1958-59.

My 1967 ABYC Roster shows 68 Lido 14s in Fleet # 6!Birth of the Lido Fleet submitted by Dale Berkihiser

Calling all ABYC Members!!

We need to raise money for our Junior Fund.

The Junior Advisory Committee has decided to name our fleet of charter boats.

We are seeking a $500 donation to put an appropriate name of your choice on the

back of one of our 16 charter boats in our fleet of Sabots and Optimists.

Email [email protected] if you would like to donate.

Due to the rotation of boats the JAC is guaranteeing the name will remain on a boat for a minimum of 5 years. Please make checks out to ABYC and on the memo line add Jr.

Fund Boat naming.
