May started with a bang! Yes quite literally, the official signal from the cannon that

Opening Day festivities had begun. The Raft-Up party was a blast. Manythanks to Jon Robinson for a greatday and to Pat McCormick for raft-uporganization! And…thank you Merlefor letting us play with the cannon.

Steve, his mom Karen, and I enjoyed the Viper BBQ and beertent and spent a nice afternoon enjoying good company andwatching the boats arrive and raft-up. One boat needs honorablemention Wayne Noecker provided the most entertainment forthe afternoon. He arrived in his beautiful yacht and beganbacking down toward the dock. The anchor began descendingat a rapid rate unfortunately a bit too fast – it managed to grab hold and stop the boat about 50 yards short of the dock (evenafter dredging I guess the basin isn’t that deep). Wayne was a good sport – and executed the second attempt with noproblems! Later that evening, we all enjoyed the BBQ while listening to sounds of Squeeze Box. The dock party went wellinto the wee hours.

Our Opening Day began with a trip to Seal Beach Yacht Club for their ceremonies. We were joined by Jr. StaffCommodore Mike Baumann and Betty. On the way back, we were able to watch the Club Championship Regatta with mysister Jane McNaboe and Paul Antcil, representing the Sr. Sabot Fleet, in the lead. Congratulations to Jane and Paul ournew club champions. (Paul and Gwen will be getting a lot of use out of the parking space this summer.) We enjoyed theafternoon hosting guests on the ABYC flagship Hot Pink. Staff Commodore Jeff Merrill did a wonderful job of organizing theOpening Day Ceremony. Sue Crockett sang a beautiful rendition of our National Anthem. And the Jr. Board did a terrificjob managing the flags. Even with all of the things we have to brag about, we were only a few seconds over 30-minutes!(I had a lot of positive comments from visiting clubs wanting a copy of our script!) Thank you Nicole and Chef Rick for anawesome buffet—one of the best in recent memory. Also, many thanks to new member Angie Tabor for the steel drummusic.

The next weekend in May was Mother’s Day. The Social Advisory Committee did a beautiful job led by CarolClanton on Mother’s Day Brunch. The second deck looked gorgeous with light green table cloths, pink napkins and pink

and green flower arrangements. Chef Rick did an incrediblebuffet for the brunch complete with individual apple pies. KathyRobinson created a new champagne drink with cranberry juice– that was very popular. All the Mom’s got to take home thetable flower arrangements. There was a very relaxing vibethroughout the day.

The Club was back to sailing the following weekendhosting the Finn North American Championships. Led by GlennSelvin and Bob Anderson, the Finns had three days of sailingoff Seal Beach. Friday was a challenging day to race as lightand variable winds prevailed making it difficult to manage a fairrace course. Fortunately, Saturday and Sunday were back tomore normal Long Beach conditions. Ron Wood took a groupof us out to watch on Saturday in Driftwood and we stayed andenjoyed a BBQ steak with the sailors that evening.

As you know, the US Sailing Olympic Development Team has been training at ABYC for the month of May and willcontinue until the Laser North Americans in mid-June. We were fortunate to have a special presentation by the LeandroSpina US Sailing Director of Youth Development and several of the athletes including our own Sydney Bolger and RileyGibbs. What an impressive group of athletes and interesting evening! We are already working on plans for hosting theteam this time next year. We are planning a fund raiser and potentially hosting our Olympic Classes Regatta in May 2015to help with their training for Rio. Look for more information about this developing plan over the next few months.

Finally, Steve and I got to go racing! Yes, Memorial Day Regatta we finally got to go racing on Pink. It was a greatregatta hosted by the Tempest, Multihull and 505 fleets. Many thanks to Dominic Meo Regatta Chair and Board LiaisonFleet Captain Steve Smith, PROs John Williams, Marc Schryer and Bob Sherwood. We had well over 100 boats participatingand although the Cal 20 fleet turn-out was disappointing, we really enjoyed racing. Saturday the wind was light so the

sailing was very challenging. Fortunately, it built for the third race on Saturday.Saturday night we enjoyed a cook-your-own BBQ on the newly refurbished BBQ.Sunday, the conditions were typical Long Beach and built throughout the day.We had some very tired Laser and Radial sailors back at the club. Thank you tothe Tempest fleet for providing lunch to all the volunteers. A very nice touch to avery fun weekend.

Speaking of the BBQ, the Lido 14 Fleet has generously paid to refurbishthe BBQ so we can all enjoy BBQ dinners this summer for Twilights! THANKYOU LIDOS! Please watch the Weekly Reader for information on the menu forThursday Night Patio Dinners. Even if you’re not sailing, come down and enjoydinner at your club.

Did anyone notice the new paint on the East side of the building? Nicolewas able to secure a great quote for painting the fascia board, pillars and railingof the club that is so desperately in need of attention. To save $$, the painting willoccur in phases over the next few months. Chuck Clay has done such a goodjob of watching his budget, that we have room for the painting! Good job Nicole and Chuck!

We have ordered new table tops using funds from the Adopt-a-Chair fund raiser. Tables will arrive in six to eightweeks. Also, we installed names on the backs of chairs that have been refurbished. So, come down and find your chair! There is a lot to look forward to this summer! Men’s Day Superhero Smashup is coming up June 8, the Laser NorthAmerican Championship June 12 - 15 and Long Beach Race Week June 27 - 29.

Finally, we have begun the search for a new club manager. Nicole has been doing a terrific job of managing theclub for the past few months and is ready to turn it over. We have been working on documenting procedures so that thenew club manager will be in a strong position to take over the helm. We are in process of writing the job description andwill advertise the position soon. If you know of any potential candidates, please ask them to send their information toNicole at [email protected]

Paintbrushes, rollers, dirt, new plants, volunteers, and a lot of sweat equity is what wasgoing on for Spring Spruce up 2014! Wow did we get a lot of work done down at the club.We painted both sides of the perimeter wall (with the same blue that is used for the outside

of the club), the entire grounds were weeded, trimmed, landscaped and watered, and new plantswere put in the back lawn area.

The railing leading upstairs was painted with oil-based paint (no more sticky paint!), thetrophies were cleaned, the tinting on the bar sliding glass doors was removed, bottom paint wasapplied to a majority of the fleet whalers, and the race container was totally cleaned out andorganized. SAC took on the task of cleaning out all of the storage containers up in the attic,

which is never a fun job as there are some critters up there that nobody want to run into.It is truly amazing that all of this work can get done in a couple days with only the dedication of ABYC members.

Now don’t feel bad if you did not make it down this year, we will save you a spot for you in 2015! I usually do not like toname all of the volunteers in the fear of inadvertently leaving someone out, but I must give it a shot. If I left your name out,let me know and I will personally buy you a drink of your choice at the club, so here goes.

Rob Stropky, Tracy Conn, Paul Anctil, Kelli and Bradley Clinton, John Williams, Dan Delave, Bob Wright, Todd andCathy Smith, Mike Baumann, Scott Gronewold, Lori Vanskyhock, Amber Wayne, Jim Lefflen, Robert Chubb, Nancy Merrill,Cindy Heavrin, Kathy Reed, Michael Kramer, Dominic Meo, Jon and Kathy Robinson, Bob and Georgene Anderson, KevinBrown, Bob, Peter and Teri Bishop, Merle Asper, Ed Spotsky, Steve Smith, Don and Christine Taugher, Eric Conn, Jenniferand Steve Kuritz, George and Margaret Caddle, Dave and Sue Crockett, Mark and Robin Townsend, George Suarez, JeffMerrill, Dave Myers, Sue McDannel, Mike and Deanna Whalen, Dave Bear, Latham Bell, Jim Drury, Will Vrooman, VannWilson, Joseph Barbeito, and my bride Trish Clay!

Now you can’t let all of these volunteers do all this work and not feed them, so a shout out goes out to the staff forpreparing hamburgers, hot dogs and chicken with all of the trimmings. Oh, and don’t forget the beer! Thank you InterimManager Staff Commodore Nicole Peoples, and staff Jenny, Roberto, Rick, Eric, Cole, Julissa, and Sheila, you guysROCK!

Make it down the club, and check out the calendar. We have tons going on for June and July, so bring down afriend, hang out on the patio with a cold beverage, grab some lunch and enjoy your club!

Remember, ABYC is the PLACE to Be…Cheers, Chuck Clay

ABYC Club Championship Regatta The 2014 Club Championship Regatta was held the morning of Opening Day May 3rd. Since the race was being contested in our fleet of CFJ’s, there had been some lobbying

on the part of some Fleet Champions as to methods of equalizing the contest, as the CFJ isperceived as being somewhat weight sensitive. After deliberation with the Race ManagementCommittee a minimum weight of helm and crew combined, was set at 300 pounds.

On race morning, the crews assembled in the Quarterdeck for weigh-in and to draw fortheir first boat assignment. The Competitors were:

Jane McNaboe & Paul Anctil Senior SabotsRiley Gibbs & Emily Golison JuniorsSanjai Kohli & Sawyer Gibbs LasersJohn Gresham & Amanda Wayne LidosJim Sears & Thomas Dobson VipersChuck Clay & Alex Van Dyke Cal 20John Williams & Steve Hansen Multihulls

Note: John Williams was not able to compete as his crew became unavailable at the last minute.Three crews required corrector weights which were neat canvas bags of what felt like lead shot, in graduated

weights and generously provided by the Lido Fleet.Once everyone was weighed, signed-in and assigned a boat, we headed for the docks for everyone to become

familiar with, what to most crew were, new boats. Allie Blecher and her Junior Program assistants did a nice job ensuringthe boats were as equal as possible. Our Principal Race Officer, Steve Flam held off on the start sequence to allow crewsa bit of time to practice. As in past years, Steve set two windward marks, one set some distance to weather of the nearermark. Crews then had to decide which mark to round first, as they were required to round both marks in each race.

Consensus seemed to be if you were first to the nearer mark, you took that option first, but it didn’t always work out thatway. It was fun to watch from shore and see how tactics played out.

Following the first race the teams returned to the finger dock to swap boats; however, Steve rightly decided tomake subsequent boat swaps on the water to save time in completing the remaining races which worked out fine.

Jane and Paul showed they were a team to be reckoned with as they jumped out to a two win lead followed bySanjai & Sawyer, Riley and Emily. Jane and Paul were OCS in race three taking fourth place, but bounced back in racefour with another win and a regatta total of seven points, winning the 2014 Club Championship Regatta, the Kim ThompsonPerpetual Trophy and of course the coveted Club Champion parking space in the yard. Tied for points were Lasers andJuniors, both with ten points; however, Riley and Emily were the beneficiaries of the tie-breaker, taking second. Followingin order were; Sanjai and Sawyer, John and Amanda, Jim and Thomas and Chuck and Alex.

Steve Flam was assisted on the Bay Barge by; Derek Buczynski, Susan Lanoue, Bill Moore. David & RyanSchack and Alan Peoples set and adjusted marks while Cindy Heavrin and Kathy Reed set the finish line and took thescores. I owe a good deal of thanks to our race volunteer team who conducted four races including boat swaps in shortorder. I also thank all the competitors who brought our CFJ’s back to the docks safe and sound, washed and unrigged theboats, leaving them as they found them. Well done everyone. Congratulations to all our ABYC Fleet Champions!

BASC- Balboa Advanced Sabot ClinicMay 18 and 19 three sabot sailors from ABYC ventured down to Balboa Yacht Club for the Advanced Sabot Clinic. There were 50 sailors from Long Beach to San Diego. Roxy Snyder, Bobby Little and I applied for the clinic and got

accepted. It was windy for Newport Bay and we had a great weekend fine tuning our boats, learning some local knowledgeof the bay and meeting sailors from other yacht clubs. Saturday we started with breakfast and introductions of the coaches. We were split into our groups for the weekend. A’s and B’s were one group and C1 and C2s were the other. Our firstsession with our coaches was a talk about the schedule for the weekend and upwind sailing. We left the dock at about10:00 to go out and practice starts and race upwind. After lunch we had a class on how to prepare and win a protest. Ilearned that the best thing is to not get in a protest at all. But, if you do have to go to the room, you need to be respectful tothe committee and the person you are protesting. We then headed out for the afternoon sailing session. We did at least tenshort races with several coaches watching us go up and down wind. They helped us tune our boats for the regatta on thesecond day and gave us tips about improving our boat speed up and down wind. Sunday morning our class session wasabout sailing in Newport Bay. Our coaches both talked about the wind shifts in the bay and where the current is strongest. They showed us what moorings will be taken out for the Sabot Nationals this summer. After lunch we started the BASCregatta. We sailed six races and had a throw out. When the races were done, we had a debriefing session with ourcoaches, unrigged our boats and had the trophy presentation. BASC was a great weekend, and I learned a lot about racingin Newport. It was a great way to practice and meet other sailors from different yacht clubs. Personally, I thought that thesnacks they gave us after racing were the best! I definitely will apply next year!

Sunday July 27th

Hello Blockheads! The time is approaching for our annual championships. Due to a polite request for a calendarchange coinciding with some lunar discrepancies we have moved our original regatta date from early August to end of Julyto have better tides and to let the Lido’s have their nationals in the bay (this will also allow some of us block heads whomasquerade as Lido sailors to participate in both events).

Please plan to be at the beach by 3pm with your entry fee dues and to have Mr. Pineblock, Bob Chubb, inspect yourboat (remember, we are a true one-design and not a development class). As done in previous years we will race for the BobChubb Pineblock Perpetual and crown four champions – Women’s, Junior (under 18), Masters (80 and above), and Open(everyone).

Per class rules if you can’t attend please loan out your boat so that we can get as many sailors involved. If you do nothave your own Pineblock, but would like to participate, please show up (and bring your bathing suit, towel and $12.00 cashAmerican – entry fee dues are better “paid before you wade”. Entries will only be accepted at the beach on race day.

We welcome sailors of all ages and skill levels. The wind off the beach is a conundrum for even the most experiencedold salt (last year we had to abandon one of the Master’s races when the entire fleet tacked away from the finish line). Comedown and enjoy the fun, cheer on your friends and stay for the awards BBQ. BBQ is a bring your own something to grill andalong with an hors d’oeuvres or dessert to share.

Check the ABYC.org online calendar for the latest information.

If you have any questions or would like to be on the fleet email list please contactPineblock Fleet Captain, Jeff Merrill – 949.355.4950 or [email protected]

This year’s Memorial Day Regatta, held over May 24 and 25 was ABYC’s first chance to welcome visitors to use ournew facilities, including a rebuilt basin and freshly paved boat-storage area. By all accounts, the regatta was asuccess. Although the breeze on Saturday was light and fluky, leading to very challenging conditions, our normally

reliable south-westerly appeared on Sunday to provide great racing. In addition to normal racing on both the Ocean and Bay Courses on both days, the club set up a special outside

line for Kiteboarders on Saturday. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of PRO Bob Sherwood, with support from son Jamesand ABYC Board Liaison Steve Smith, the wind was too light to allow racing.

PRO John Williams; assisted by Jerry Montgomery, Geoffrey Talbot, Kent Blasie, Judy Mathias, Kaile Berzins andMichelle Eatough had more luck on the ocean course, where racing was held for the Cal 20, C-15, Finn, Laser and LaserRadial classes. Setting and adjusting the Ocean marks where; Jeff Newsome, Becky Ashburn, Bill Dimpfl, Henk Baars,Joel Giacomino, Adam Jayne and Tim Carter.

PRO Marc Schryer ably orchestrated racing in the Bay along with; Paul Anctil, Bob Stropky, Jennie McCarthy andAlex Kondracke for Open Bic, Sabot and Lido 14 classes. Lars Rosenblad, Eileen Edwards and Chuck Johnston ran theBay whalers along with Kevin Baumann and Alex Newton who coached and watched over the ABYC junior racers. Coveringthe media side of things was our Regatta Press Officer/Photographer, Rich Roberts and his whaler driver, Dan DeLave.

Sharon Pearson and her assistants; Jamie & Sophie Reid, Ginn & Juliana Hopkins, Jennifer & Steve Kuritz providedscoring on Patience. On the Bay, Robert Rosales, Pinky Greene, Lynn Drury Tom & Suzanne Dobson handled scoring onthe “old” Bay Barge. Jim Morford generously took command, again, of the computer scoring. To the above core groups, over forty volunteers, who all checked in at the race volunteer check-in desk run by Bill and Mary Lou Nicolai, generouslyprovided their support to make the regatta a success.

Taking entries Saturday morning were; Mary and Joe Riddick, Judy Mathias and Bobbie Peterson while CliffMathias was a welcome and familiar face greeting members and guests at the gate.

Judging and protest hearings were taken care of by Chief Judge, Ron Wood and his team of Sue Crockett, SteveKuritz, Margaret Caddle and Lynn Lindquist. George Caddle made sure Patience was ready to go while Kevin Brown andDave Myers had our whalers equipped for racing duty.

ABYC continues to be the center of excellent small-boat racing in southern California. It is the unique combinationof good weather and excellent race management that keeps sailors returning year after year to attend the Holiday Series,in which most of the sailors are members of other clubs. As I was helping take boats out of the water on Sunday, Ioverheard one sailor say to another, “You know, the guy that ran the (ocean course) racing is a multi-hull sailor, and heactually races. The racing is so much better when the PRO actually races.”

Dominic Meo, Regatta Chair

One of my favorite ABYC traditions is the gatheringof the blue blazered white pants wearers earlyeach May for Opening Day. It was great seeing

you all there and if you missed it, you should know by nowthat…ABYC is THE place to BE.

The sun and breeze combined to shine and coolour oasis at the end of the peninsula on Saturday Tres deMayo, our 88th annual. The ABYC staff did a great job withset up and the Club was still glistening from the fantasticparticipation the weekend before during Spring Spruce Up.

The morning saw compelling competition on theCommodore’s Course as the top representatives fromABYC’s Duty fleets duked it out in our club CFJ’s in the“race for the space”. Organized by Fleet Captain StevenSmith, PRO’d by Steve Flam and assisted by a greatband of volunteers it was another success. Honors this year go to skipper Jane McNaboe and crew Paul Anctil from the

Senior Sabot fleet our newest winners of the Kim Thompson Memorial Club Championship (hey, racing without a leeboard, extra credit points) – congratulations to all of the participants for making it a spirited regatta.

The Etchell’s and Viper fleets tapped the keg and lit the Q to grill the best bratwursts ever - while perched on ourfreshly paved tarmac at the top of the glorious new ramp. It was a central gathering place for visitors to mingle and

celebrate while enjoying the famous hospitality of the host boatsfloating in our newly refreshed basin (splinter free docks!). Specialthanks to S/C Jon Robinson, Bob Bishop and Pat McCormickfor the raft up and Tim Carter and Rich Vaught for cooking andpouring. (Hey Tim, no swimming in the Basin, right?). Tracy Conndid a great job of shooting photos of the entire day, check out hiswork on our website – thanks Tracy!

With steel drum music putting a skip in our steps (thanks to newmember Angie Tabor) we kicked off the ceremony portion at 15:30with Sue Crockett signing the National Anthem, Alan Peoplesleading the Pledge of Allegiance and Don Reiman giving usinspiration. Our Junior Board was active as always, Jr. CommodoreEmily Golison passed out roses to our longest tenured members

and Ryan Schack helped with the flags. After introducing the staff commodoresand their spouses in attendance plus our officers and directors, the mic washanded over to our smiling leader.

Commodore Jennifer Kuritz gave a warm welcoming speech for allattendees and summarized some of the highlights that have occurred at the Cluband on the race course over the past few months with a nod to an action packedsummer ahead. She also introduced all of our hard working staff and their currentleader, acting club manager, S/C Nicole Peoples. Vice Commodore Chuck Claygreeted all of the visiting flag officers and by 15:32 (just over the thirty-minute-rule) the cannon boomed as Port Captains Dave Myers and Kevin Brown raisedour burgee to signify the official opening of our never ending season.

So, pack away your white pants, hang up your blue blazers and comedown to the best Club in the world and enjoy our brand new yard, ramp anddocks this summer – ABYC is fresh, vibrant and we are planing along in a strongbreeze with perfect trim at high speeds!

brunchmother’s day

On Mother’s Day, most people take their mother out to a typical restaurant with a two hour wait hoping for somethingother than soggy pancakes. But not so for the lucky mothers of Alamitos Bay Yacht Club! Even though it was a sold-put event, guests were quickly escorted to gorgeous tables set with mint green tablecloths and pink pyramid folded

napkins. Mothers were treated to alstromeria and chrysanthemum floral bouquets that served as stunning centerpieces. An array of delectable dishes were artfully displayed that, according to guests, tasted as scrumptious as they

appeared. Diets flew out the window for cherrywood smoked bacon and scalloped potatoes. The chorizo and spinachscramble received rave reviews, as well as, the homemade cranberry apple pies. Chef Rick out-did himself again! Inaddition to indulging in a variety of satisfying dishes, guests were able to sip on Champagne, mimosas, and hibiscuscocktails. Mothers spent a delightful morning enjoying the company of family and friends!

This event was made possible by the dedicated staff and SAC volunteers. Carol Clanton, event coordinator, wouldlike to give a special thanks to the volunteers involved. Sam and Dana Bell, Ron Clanton, and Cindy Heavrin helped serve.Floral arrangements were designed by Kathy Robinson, Sue Mcdannel, and Dana Bell. Ron Clanton, Karen Kuritz, andTed Squilanti oversaw the tablescapes. So next year don’t get stuck waiting for a table in a mediocre restaurant, plan tospend a memorable Mother’s Day at ABYC! !

Spring Spruce-UpThe club house, boatyard and grounds look great following the yacht basin rebuild and

yard repaving. Adding to the fresh appearance were the many volunteers who showed up totackle the long list of to-do’s on Spring Spruce-Up weekend in April. Lending their toil and sweat to theeffort were members and friends of the ABYC Laser Fleet, in no particular order; Vann Wilson, Pam

Ratzlaff, Jennie McCarthy, Robert Stropky, Rodion Mazin, Bob & Georgene Anderson, Jorge Suarez and his neighborCharise Paluzo. Many thanks to you and the many other volunteers.

2014 Laser North American and U.S. SAILING Singlehanded ChampionshipABYC is hosting some 150 or more Laser, Laser Radial and Laser 4.7 racers for the North American Championship

June 12-15. There is a new wrinkle to the championship this year for members of U.S. SAILING, as Women in LaserRadials and Men in full-rig Lasers will also be competing for the U.S. SAILING Singlehanded Championship. FemaleRadial racers will compete for medals and the prestigious Helen Wills Hanley Perpetual Trophy while Men compete formedals and the George O’Day Perpetual Trophy.

Adding the Singlehanded Championship brings additional cachet to an already prestigious International LaserClass and International Sailing Federation (ISAF) 100 Point Event. ABYC members should be proud to host this eventwhich, in addition to attracting sailors from the U.S.A., Canada and Mexico, will host Laser racers from at least an additionaleleven nations.

So things will be a little busy during the week of June 9th, but come on down to see why the Laser Class attractssailors young and old, male and female. Watch for a full report in the next Sou’Wester.

Drink of the Month Cindy Heavrin and Kathy Reed

Lemon Drop Martini

2 oz. Vodka*½ oz. Triple Sec

Sugar, Lemon Juice*Ingredients listed in order of importance

Somewhat of a trick question as I didn’t give you all the information you need to determine the outcome of aprotest.

Rule 10 “On Opposite Tacks” and Rule 18.1(a) “When Rule 18 Applies” apply in positions 1 and 2.Rule 13 “While Tacking” applies in position 3.Rule 18.3 “Tacking in the Zone” applies in position 4 and 5.

1. At position 1 and 2 Rule 10 applies and rule 18 does not per rule 18.1(a). After P (Blue) passes head to wind atposition 3 rule 10 no longer applies and rule 18 switches on. Therefore P (Blue) does not break rule 10.

2. Between position 3 and 4 P (Blue) is tacking and is subject to rule 13 in the zone, so rule 18.3 applies. Yellow doesnot have to alter course until after blue completes her tack so Blue has not broken rule 13.

To determine if P (Blue) breaks rule 18.3 you need to know if she causes S (Yellow) to sail above close-hauled at position4 or position 5.

3. It is clear that S (Yellow) has had to change course, but if she goes does not go above close-hauled P (Blue) doesnot break rule 18.3, if she does go above close-hauled P (Blue) breaks rule 18.3.
