been promoted to management at Lovi’s Deli in Calabasas. Royall started with Solley’s in Sherman Oaks before it became Jerry’s Deli. He worked at various Jerry’s outlets including Westwood and Woodland Hills. He subsequently served as manager at the Encino location until they closed on September 30, 2020 due to the pandemic. He was then hired by Lovi’s in October 2020, and in June 2021 moved into management when long-time GM Jay Rubenstein left the restaurant. Brian Lovi said of Royall, who consistently works 10 to 12 hour shifts, “Mark is our #1!”

This Sunday, July 4, recent Viewpoint School graduate, Maya Fardad-Finn, left, class of 2021, will sing the National Anthem at the City of Calabasas’ 4th of July Hometown Celebration - Evening of Music and Fireworks at Calabasas High School. Fireworks begin at 9 pm.

Viewpoint’s Middle & Upper School Choral Director Carrie Dietsch said, “Maya is an exceptional vocalist and performer who has been a fixture on the Viewpoint stage since Lower School. She will be attending Southern Methodist University in the fall where she will further her studies in both music and theater. We are thrilled that Maya has been selected to share her talents with the Calabasas Community this Fourth of July.”

Longtime Hidden Hills resident Margaret Hampton, right, passed away June 13, just shy of her 95th birthday. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, to Mike Piskura and Elizabeth Zipay, a Slovak immigrant. They spoke Slovak at home; Hampton learned English after starting school. In 1958 she moved to California, where she worked in the fashion industry as a designer. She married Albert Hampton in 1964, and they raised their two boys, Stephen and David, in Hidden Hills, next to the deCarteret family with whom they enjoyed a nearly 60-year, next-door neighborly friendship.

Hampton was a founding member of the Law Advocates of San Fernando Valley. She was proud of her work creating the California booklet When You Become 18, which educates young people on their legal rights and responsibilities. She was an active member of the Assistance League of San Fernando Valley. Hampton taught fashion design, pattern-marking and sewing

classes into her mid-80’s. She cared for Al at home for 17 years before he died in 2007, and she became a passionate advocate for Alzheimer’s research. She took classes at Pierce College into her early 90’s and would have continued watercolor and current event classes in the past year if they hadn’t been canceled due to the pandemic.

Hampton is survived by her sons, five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

After the last year and a half, I’m so grateful that this 4th of July we are finally able to come back together again and celebrate as a community.

This time of year my office and law enforcement receive many, many calls about illegal fireworks going off at all hours of the day and night. It’s happening in every community throughout Los Angeles. I’ve seen them when I go on nighttime walks with our dog Brush, my family has been woken up by explosions in the middle of the night and I know far too many of you have the same experiences.

I hear from medical professionals and fire fighters when folks are brought into the ER with missing fingers and when rooftops and palm trees are engulfed in flames due to fireworks. Practically all the horror stories I’ve heard are avoidable.

Fireworks are illegal, dangerous and can cause incredible harm, especially to our pets and individuals with PTSD.

Annually 19,500 fires erupt due to fireworks, resulting in

about $100 million annually in property damage. On average 9,100 fireworks injuries send people to hospitals. With the continued extreme weather conditions, one ember from a firework could lead to irreparable wildfires, especially in our hillsides.

And, this time of year our LA Animal Services always temporarily fill up with pets that have run away from home due to being so frightened by fireworks.

So what are we doing about it? √ This year I’ve dedicated

funding for more visible patrols to specifically help with firework deterrence and suppression in our West Valley communities. This means dedicated teams during peak hours to help deter, mitigate and investigate these explosions. But, we still need your help reporting. Go to www.lacity.org/myla311 or call 877-275-5273 if you see or hear fireworks nearby.

√ If you can, I encourage you to foster or adopt animals from LA Animal Services and create life-saving space as inevitably more pets will escape and be taken in due to ongoing

explosions. √ I’ve also partnered with

MySafeLA and LAFD on a PSA campaign to remind folks to think about their neighbors and highlight the dangers of fireworks.

√ City Attorney Mike Feuer has announced that he is cracking down on online fireworks sales as they have become rampant on platforms like Facebook and CraigsList.

√ AND, as tradition, I’ve funded the great annual Blumenfield 4th of July Fireworks Extravaganza at Warner Center Park. We’ll have great live music, local food and one of the most spectacular fireworks displays in the region.

Again, fireworks are dangerous, illegal and can cause incredible damage to our community. Don’t put yourself, your family and our community at risk. Leave it to the professionals, and make the safe choice.

I hope to see you all at our annual fireworks extravaganza this 4th of July at Warner Center Park and please be safe during the holiday season.

Guest Editorial: Cracking Down on Illegal Fireworks-----------------------------------------------------------------------------From Councilman Bob Blumenfield

---------------------------------------------------From Kathleen Sterling

As we celebrate the 4th of July, we have to remember it’s not all hot dogs, backyard barbecues, sparklers and fireworks.

It’s a true celebration of our country’s independence. Not only are we trumpeting getting rid of tyranny, but we are hailing the rights that followed that independence - free speech, freedom to worship, freedom of the press and more.

This month most of us are also reveling in our independence post-COVID. We can now move about freely, meet with friends and family, enjoy those backyard barbecues and parties. We can head to the park to see the fireworks, head to the mall to shop, and enjoy little things like browsing the aisles in the market without worrying you were going against traffic patterns.

But with freedom comes responsibility. Free speech is wonderful - but you can’t yell

“Fire” in a crowded theatre. Freedom of religion is paramount, but you can’t use it to justify terrorism.

Freedoms eased up post-pandemic are liberating, but shouldn’t be abused.

I respect the anti-vaxxers’ rights to choose not to get the vaccine. It’s their body, and it’s the same argument for pro-choice decisions.

Unfortunately, many of those who eschew the vaccine are also not wearing masks. I know several of them.

At first I thought, well, I’m vaccinated, they are just putting themselves at risk. But now with the Delta variant - three articles on the dangers just in this issue - those unvaccinated and unmasked are putting the rest of us at risk also, so much that health officials are pushing us back to mask wearing again.

So flaunting the fact that you

don’t believe in vaccinations and/or masks is leading us back into another kind of tyranny - that of more possible mandatory regulations.

So this 4th, be safe - and be responsible. If you don’t believe in, or cannot for health reasons, get vaccinated, protect yourself and those around you by wearing a mask. The more all of us do that, the less we’ll have to do it in the long run.

Enjoy the 4th. Enjoy the fireworks. Let’s just not have the pandemic blow up on us again.

By Jesse GabrielLast week, I had the privilege

of honoring ONEgeneration, a community organization headquartered in Reseda, as the 2021 California Nonprofit of the Year for Assembly District 45. ONEgeneration has done extraordinary work serving our community, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Their innovative programs and services have helped to bring together young folks and seniors and uplift some of our most vulnerable friends and neighbors.

Founded in 1978, ONEgeneration’s mission is to enrich the lives of seniors, children, and families in the West San Fernando Valley by fostering intergenerational relationships in a shared senior daycare and childcare setting.

ONEgeneration began as a storefront senior center operated by volunteers. As demographics changed, the organization expanded and evolved to meet the community’s needs at their Senior Enrichment Center, Adult Daycare and Health Center, and in the seniors’ own homes. In 1994, ONEgeneration added a childcare program to bolster its commitment to intergenerational services and programs.

ONEgeneration offers a host of programs designed to integrate the two generations to boost quality of life for young and old alike. When the seniors and youth join in activities, seniors recall favorite songs, games, and projects of their pasts as they share their skills, patience, and expertise with the children. When older adults tutor young people, they bring one-on-one attention to youth skill-building, while the children help the seniors become more comfortable with new technology.

Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel Names ONEgeneration Nonprofit of the Year

Changes to community needs during the COVID-19 pandemic compelled ONEgeneration to pivot their programming dramatically and work creatively to stay afloat. One of their largest sources of funding, the childcare center, had to close while the needs of its seniors increased drastically. In a resilient response, ONEgeneration not only greatly increased its grant application output, but also expanded its food delivery services for homebound individuals and established a food pantry for community members in need. Over the last year, ONEgeneration has served over 32,000 meals each month as well as reclaimed and repurposed over 250,000 pounds per month of food from local markets for its food pantries. Working with over 40 community partners including affordable housing units, churches, homeless shelters, and food banks, ONEgeneration was able to serve anywhere from eight to ten thousand people a month. Their efforts also include providing services that ensured over two thousand isolated, homebound seniors received

COVID-19 vaccinations.ONEgeneration has done

exemplary work uplifting some of our most vulnerable neighbors and selflessly serving our West Valley community during the COVID-19 pandemic. You can find out more about their services, and ways to support their work, at www.onegeneration.org.Congratulations and thank you ONEgeneration for all you do for our West Valley community!

As always, please be in touch if my office or I can be of service.

VALLEY ENTERTAINMENT

By Katie Sterling If there’s one given

component of immersing yourself in any Pixar movie, it’s the de facto assumption that you’ll eventually end up in tears. It’s no surprise that Disney has had a history of shall we say darker material, but Pixar seamlessly weaves life topics into heartwarming stories of love and friendship. Sure the adults may get a bit more out of the storyline (and cry a bit louder), but there’s no doubt that the message gets through to the younger demographic it’s advertised to.

In the latest Pixar adventure, Luca, a young boy (and secret sea monster) experiences an unforgettable summer, living life outside of his comfort zone and finding friendship after living a fairly secluded lifestyle. While it is a coming-of-age tale, it’s certainly less profound than its Pixar predecessor Soul which essentially introduced kids to the afterlife. Rather, Luca is the epitome of a postcard for summer; breezy, beachy and filled with copious amounts of gelato.

The film centers around Luca, a young sea monster who has been forever warned of the dangers of humans who seemingly want nothing to do but hunt them. Stumbling upon knick knacks on the ocean floor, and a fellow sea monster Alberto, Luca’s interest in what’s above the surface steers the two on an epic adventure. The only problem? How to keep their identity a secret when even the tiniest drop of water transforms them back into their scaly selves. Trekking ahead as only two adventurous boys can, Luca and Alberto bravely explore the Italian village and befriend a human girl named Giulia who recruits them onto her team for the town’s annual race. But how long will their time on the island, and their friendship, last before the truth of their identities slips out?

The fable here is nothing that Pixar/Disney hasn’t touched on before: the outsider. The message that you should always be yourself, despite adversity, because those who love you will love you just the way you are. It doesn’t drive the point too intensely but like the plot itself, unravels in a casual and carefree manner reflective of the

Luca Swims Into Summer Funvillage lifestyle. Viewers know we’ll get a happy ending but it’s the journey along the way that makes each tale unique.

Yet, perhaps the most impressive aspect of the movie is the animation itself that only seems to get better with every new Pixar addition. The quick transformation from sea monster to man or the nuanced mannerisms of townspeople in the background showcase how much Pixar has managed to dominate the craft. There’s a lot that a viewer can unpack in terms of the messages meant to impart, as well as the hidden Easter eggs Pixar incorporates, but the film is such a charming Italian escape, let yourself just swim along into the summer fun.

By Kathleen SterlingThe Bamboo Room

is as exotic as it sounds – a sophisticated, elegant lounge with an Asian vibe – direct from its two owners, who met in Macao.

Woodland Hills resident Jeff Helfer and Michelin Star Executive Chef Anthony Alaimo designed the Westlake Village bar to be an upscale salon where you can get a great drink, chill out and listen to live music.

The dark walls, wood floors and doors, rattan chairs and flickering lanterns create an intimate space for a couple - or even a group.

Helfer says it’s a place that draws regulars, even though it’s only been open two weeks.

You can order from your seat, but he’d prefer you cozy up to the long bar and get to know the mixologists. “It’s more fun to hang there and meet other guests while you wait for your drink,” Helfer told us.

Generous pours and creative cocktails are served by those expert mixologists. Get your drink, then sit and listen from one of the small swiveling wooden tables that circle the bar, or wander into the lounge with its long sofa beds while you listen to the band. Chill on one of two patios with their hanging beds and firepits.

The Library Room is a place to curl up with a date and a drink, or mix and mingle with a group of friends on the deep conversational sofas. There are huge wooden sliding doors that close off to create a private party space.

The Bamboo Room is already hosting events, and is unusual in that you can reserve a table in advance, or a room.

We were impressed with the mix of guests – from neighbors who stopped in for a quick drink to snuggling couples and small groups of friends.

They come for the

ambiance, and the drinks – wine, beer, spirits and Bamboo Room’s specialty craft cocktails, as exotic as the venue. “The Prescription” is a mix of whiskey, French vanilla bean, cinnamon and lemon essence. “Smoke and Spice” blends Mezcal, Ancho Reyes liqueur and cayenne dusted ruby grapefruit. The most popular according to Helfer, especially now with the heat, is the “Money Penny,” a refreshing blend of vodka, cucumber, pressed citrus, fresh lemongrass and champagne. Try the “Amaro Sour,” the “Infatuation,” “Ramble On,” “Risk and Reward,” “Crushed Velvet,” “Born Under a Bad Sign” or the nod to Helfer’s legal background, “Closing Argument.”

The Bamboo Room -A Smart Sexy Space to Mix & Mingle

We sipped wine and a Money Penny and listened to the Drew Cole band sing a familiar songbook, while we people watched. For a Thursday night the place was busy, but not crowded, as people moved from bar to patio or lounge and back.

It was nice to be back to “normal,” and just hang out and listen to good music while sipping good booze. We’ve needed a local place like this to unwind after work or on the weekend. With the Bamboo Room Helfer and Alaimo have put together a smart, sexy space.

Arrive early and check out the duo’s restaurant next door. 101 North offers a full menu designed by Alaimo with an Italian bent.

Hosting your own party? Bamboo Room also offers a full-service mobile bar.

Bamboo Room and 101 North are located in the Shoppes at Westlake Village, 30760 Russell Ranch Road. For more information, private events or bottle service reservations visit bambooroomwlv.com.

Covid-19 have added to the numbers of cases hitting our shores but none so far with the ferocity of “Delta” – seen as the most highly transmissible strain recorded as an offshoot of the new coronavirus.

England and Scotland were first invaded by Delta and 14,000 citizens of the two countries were observed and studied for the following information on how to avoid getting the deadly variant in the first place. The findings indicated that Covid-19 vaccines against Delta are very, very substantial. Their review stressed the fact that two doses of the approved vaccines offer considerable protection against severe illness and hospitalization from this deadly variant.

A New Beauty in Town

Dozens of variants following Covid-19 have added to the numbers of cases hitting our shores but none so far with the ferocity of “Delta.”

West Hills resident Jacqueline Brooks Bercsi has brought her new line of beauty products to consumers. Brooks Bercsi has been in the beauty industry since 1980, and Jacqueline’s Beauté is inspired by health, wellness and of course - beauty. “We understand that life is hectic, therefore we’re committed to providing the highest quality ingredients in your wellness and beauty aids to compliment your daily routine,” she says. All products have been created using natural, organic and cruelty-free ingredients. New offerings include three lines - lemongrass hemp, tea-tree and the luxury spa line of shampoo, conditioner, hair butter, hand and foot balm and body oil. There are also CBD bath bombs and luxury candles, room sprays and diffusers in such scents as vanilla, jasmin citron, romarin lavande, les citrus and figure rose. All are available at jacquelinesbeauteinc.com. Brooks Bercsi is also at the concerts in the park in Warner Park every Sunday with a booth showcasing her products - above, Brooks Bercsi, at right, and her daughterwith the Jacqueline’s Beauté product line.

Amid the concern about the new coronavirus Delta variant is the question of whether Johnson & Johnson vaccine recipients should receive a booster shot for added protection.

While Moderna and Pfizer offered a two-shot defense system to build immunity, J&J’s single shot is being questioned

Do Johnson & Johnson Vaccine Recipients Need a Booster Shot?on its full effectiveness to defend against the virus.

Research shows that J&J is currently 60% effective against Delta and as of now, there has been no official recommendation from the CDC surrounding booster shots with the Delta variant. However, some health professionals are encouraging

J&J users to receive a second dose of Moderna or Pfizer to increase protection as a second-dose system has been proven to be the best defense against COVID.

Research shows there is no harm in receiving mixed doses and J&J recipients are encouraged to discuss options with their doctor.

Suddenly, it dawned on Mary that retirement was totally awesome.

By Dr. Meeryo-ChoeAs we reopen after the

long lockdown of this pandemic and get back into the full swing of summer fun, it is a good time to think about staying safe while enjoying sports and other recreational activities. It is important that we encourage our kids to wear appropriate, well-fitting safety equipment, including helmets, for high-velocity recreational activities such as skateboarding, biking and scootering. However, despite taking safety precautions, injuries still can occur.

A concussion from a fall is among the most troubling concerns and a very good reason to insist that kids wear helmets. It is a mild traumatic brain injury that can occur when a child has an impact that causes his or her brain to move within the skull. Common symptoms after a concussion are headaches, vision problems, dizziness, nausea, difficulty thinking, feeling more emotional, changes in behavior and changes in sleep.

Despite what you may see on TV or in the movies, loss of consciousness is rare. If, however, you think your child has suffered a concussion, it is important to remove him or her from the activity. Because reaction time and balance can be affected after a concussion, continuing to play can be dangerous, and may put your child at risk for another injury. Symptoms may continue to evolve over the first 24 hours.

Your child should be immediately evaluated if there is neck pain, weakness or changes to sensation in the arms or legs, severe or increasing headache, seizure, loss of or changing consciousness, vomiting, increasingly agitated or combative behavior. Otherwise, children can be evaluated by their primary care doctor the next day.

A rest period of 24 to 48 hours, followed by symptom-limited light activities, should be included as part of your child’s initial treatment plan. A child who sustains a concussion should continue to recover over the next two to four weeks, while following progressive return-to-learn and return-to-play protocols during this period.

As a pediatric sports neurologist, it is important for me to emphasize these key points:

1) Wear appropriately fitted safety equipment, including helmets, for sports and recreational activities that are higher risk.

2) When in doubt, sit ‘em out! If a concussion is suspected, activity should be suspended immediately, until your child can be evaluated by a licensed health care provider.

How to Protect Your Kids This Summer

3) Certain signs and symptoms after a head impact may indicate a need for more urgent evaluation.

4) An initial period of rest should be followed by gradual return-to-learn and return-to-play protocols.

5) Full recovery should be attained by four weeks. If recovery plateaus or prolonged symptoms are present, the child should be evaluated by a concussion specialist.

For more information about concussions, visit uclahealth.org/brainsport.

Demand Experience - Expect ExcellenceBuying or Selling... We Make Your Dreams Come True!

By Neill Simmons The highlight of July is a

three-way conjunction of the beautiful thin crescent Moon with the dazzling planet Venus and the red planet Mars on July 11 and 12. All three objects will appear to be very close to each other in the night sky. Look low in the west about 45 minutes after sunset. After 10 pm these objects will set below the horizon.

FUN FACT: A year on Venus is 225 days, while a year on Mars is 668 days.

In July full darkness comes after 9 pm. Notice straight up is the giant red star, Arcturus. Look south and notice another red star, Antares, which is the heart of the great constellation Scorpius. Then look east to see the well-known star, Vega which is a shining beacon.

The famous “Big Dipper” constellation, Ursa Major, is at its best in July. Notice how it is hanging down by its handle. Also notice that all the stars appear to have the same brightness which makes for easy viewing. This is a must see in July.

FUN FACT: The Big Dipper has been used as a navigation tool for centuries as two of the

90 minutes. With more satellites being launched and others being retired, there is a large problem with space junk. Several countries, especially Japan, are working on a solution to clean all the unused debris.

Unlike regular clouds, Noctilucent clouds shine at night after the Sun sets. These are a

must see in July. If you happen to spot any call your friends and tell them to go outside. They are easier to see the farther north you go. These clouds are at the edge of space in the upper atmosphere and are made up of ice crystals.

NASA News: The little helicopter that made the first flight on Mars was a big hit! The air on Mars

is so thin that it was unsure if the helicopter could in fact fly. Now NASA is going to build a new one that is much bigger for the next trip to Mars.

Dawn Patrol: The planet Mercury will be very bright in the early morning sky from July 7 to the 12. One must get up about 4:45 am before the Sun comes up.

When not star gazing, Neill Simmons is a Wealth Manager with LPL Financial in Woodland Hills. If you have any astronomy or financial questions, he may be reached at 936-2626 or neill.simmons @lpl.com.

stars in the bowl point to the North Star, Polaris, which is the only star that doesn’t move. A common misconception is that the North Star is the brightest star in the sky; but, it is actually the 50th brightest. This pattern of stars can be spotted as far south as the equator.

The full Moon of July is known to many as the “Full Buck Moon.”

This nickname came about because this is the time when the young male deer’s’ antlers begin to grow.

July is one of the best months to see satellites from your back yard. Get a few friends and just look up. See who can first spot them. Notice some go south to north and some go west to east. It is easy to spot one about every 10 minutes. Sometimes a group of 60 Space X Starlink satellites are visible from Southern California. These satellites are over 270 miles high and are part of a plan to be in a giant group of 12,000 satellites. Most satellites orbit every

Project Manual for

Jaguar Land Rover Woodland Hills 6134 North Glade Avenue Woodland Hills, CA 91367

On Thursday, the City Council took a major step toward Councilmember Bob Blumenfield’s goal of having constitutional and enforceable laws that would prohibit encampments in certain sensitive areas, require notice and an offer of housing before prohibiting encampments in others areas, and enable the enforcement of disability access laws.

Earlier in the week, the Council passed a motion, that Blumenfield co-authored, which was not all that different from the one he had brought forward in November, but was different enough as it gave more clear direction to the City Attorney to draft the implementation ordinance in a manner that is humane and fair for the homeless and the housed. At today’s meeting, that ordinance was heard and passed with a 13-2 vote. Because it wasn’t unanimous, it has to come back for a second vote which is scheduled at the end of the month in which a simple majority of votes will be needed for approval.

“This comes at a time when we are opening hundreds of more beds in the West Valley through our Cabin Communities,” said Blumenfield. “With other interventions like Project Homekey and Bridge Housing, we are finally within reach of having enough housing for every single unhoused person in my district.”

This motion, which he co-

presented with Councilmembers Ridley Thomas, de Leon, O’Farrell, Krekorian and Council President Nury Martinez, would allow the City to have buffer zones including around freeways (i.e. Corbin underpass) and around shelter sites (i.e. the Willows and the Sycamore and Sunflower cabin communities).

Blumenfield stated, “More updates to come soon, but this breakthrough is big. Though much more work needs to be done, we are on track to finally, finally have the needed laws that I have been talking about for so long on the books soon.”
