FAVORITE THING ABOUT ALABAMA

I love living in Alabama especially during football season! We gather during games at my grandmother’s house. We grill out and have a big party to celebrate a victory usually. When I think about Alabama football it brings back so many memories. I think of boiled peanuts, grilled foods and my mom’s special Rotel dip, but most of all I think of all the screaming and cheering!

INDIANS OF ALABAMANative American Tribes of Alabama

Did you know the name “Alabama” is a Muskogean Indian word? It meant campsite or clearing. Most Native Americans were forced out of Alabama during the Indian Removals of the 1800’s. The descendants of tribes that escaped the removals now live in Oklahoma and Texas. The Indian children love to play, but they had different toys. The girls played with beaded dolls that were made by them. Lacrosse was a popular sport for the boys and men among the tribes. The Alabama people lived in square-shaped villages of houses on small farm plots. Alabama houses had plaster and river cane walls with thatched roofs. These Indians were farming people. The women did most of the farming. They would harvest crops of corn, beans, squash, and sunflowers. The men did most of the hunting and fishing. They would shoot deer, wild turkeys, small game and they fished the rivers. They used a bow and arrow for hunting and a fishing spear to catch fish. If you were to eat with them you might find dishes such as: cornbread, soups and stews cooked on rock hearths. There are 38 Alabama Indian tribes. The Muskogee tribe was one of the largest tribes. I read about seven different divisions that were under them. One of the divisions is called “Eufaula” which is the name of a town very close to us. I found this very interesting! I learnt several words while reading on this tribe, but the one that sticks out the most is “Muklasa” it means friends or people of one nation.
