hosted by the Chairman, Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor - who founded the company

in 1970. (Page 2-10).

On Tuesday January 13, 2015 the Al Habtoor Group celebrated its 45th Anniversary at a Gala event at Al Habtoor City. Here is the transcript of the speech by Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor, Chairman of the Group.

ismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim. Assalamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuh.Good evening and welcome. Your Excellencies, members of the media, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for accepting my invitation to share this important occasion with me. And thanks to all

my friends who flew-in especially for the event. I am very proud to celebrate the Al Habtoor Group’s 45th anniversary with you. You have all played an important part in our growth, and I am honoured to stand before you.

You just saw a video of children dreaming about what they want to be when they grow up. When I was younger, I had a dream. My dream was very simple. It was to provide my family with food and to put a roof over their heads.

When I think about the old days, when I used to earn 250 Indian rupees a month, I thank God for the blessing of giving me prosperity. And that I was born in this blessed country.

Do you want to know how I achieved my dreams? By strong belief in God and that I can accomplish anything I want. By surrounding myself with positive people. I don’t leave things for tomorrow, I do them today. I live in the present, and plan for the future. This is the secret of my success.

But, with God’s blessing, I have exceeded even my wildest dreams. It is true that my determination to succeed has played a part too. Do not get me wrong, my dreams did not turn into reality at the click of a finger. No! I had many failures first. If you read my autobiography, you would know how many times I failed. It is those failures that made me succeed. They made me stronger and more motivated.

They made me into the person I am today.

I believe the secret to success is a combination of factors: Determination. Ambition. And discipline! But I cannot forget that the trigger for all this was my father, Ahmad bin Mohammed Al Habtoor. My father was a simple man who loved camels and poetry, but I learned a lot from him. He encouraged me to meet His Highness Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum and I loved and respected him for that. He was my mentor. He pushed me hard to succeed.

I never liked to visit the Majlis. But my father encouraged me. He said to me: “you should always visit Sheikh Rashid. You will learn a lot from him!” And I did! We became very close. I was inspired by his positivity, his energy and his vision.

Today I have other dreams. I dream about a better future for the world. I dream about peace, harmony, tolerance and security. We need to protect the world for our children and grandchildren. Unlike western politicians, we put action to our words.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) shares its success with the rest of the world by giving generously to those less fortunate. The UAE was recently ranked first by a Paris based Development Assistance Committee of the OECD for being the largest donor in the world for official development assistance. The UAE’s contribution to supporting international efforts and humanitarian response to global crises now totals almost 20 billion dirhams – well above the United Nation’s target.

The UAE is pro-active in helping make the world a better place, by securing the lives of millions of people, and by establishing international peace and security, and helping to create better opportunities and a brighter future for people in developing countries.

If other governments are NOT doing anything to make our world a better place, then it is left to individuals. I am lucky enough to be in a position to do something pro-active. In 2013, I decided to set-up a new foundation. I gave it a 20 per cent share in my company. It is the Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor Foundation.

The mission of my foundation is peace and prosperity. Decades before it was formalised, my target was to make a difference, and thank God, we have. The Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor Foundation is now coordinating with some of the world’s top universities to help come up with solutions to global issues on peace and prosperity.

Our objectives include trying to find a realistic solution to the Middle East peace plan, and with the help of many international organisations, we hope to make some progress. I am also leading an initiative to combat global poverty through the Foundation. It is still a work in progress but the plan is to be able to alleviate the hardship of millions around the world.

And now, I dream about the future of my company. Today we celebrate the Al Habtoor Group’s 45th anniversary; 45 years of excellence; 45 years of success. I am very proud to stand before you today, on the spot where the Metropolitan Hotel once was. Back then it was our entry into something new – the UAE hospitality sector. And look at what we have achieved since then. This just shows you that anything is possible. You set your goal and you do everything you can to fulfil your dreams.

When I first opened the Metropolitan Hotel back in 1979, it was in middle of sand dunes and sabkha. People doubted me at first. They thought I was crazy. Today, it is becoming Al Habtoor City - in the heart of Dubai, and sitting on the banks of the Dubai Water Canal.

Let me take you back almost four decades, to when His Highness Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum woke me up to the biggest surprise of my life then. His Highness telephoned my house around 5:30 in the morning. My wife picked up and told me that Sheikh Rashid was on the phone. I cleared my throat and pretended I was fully awake, but Sheikh Rashid was not fooled.

He said to me: “Khalaf, get up. Why are you sleeping so late?! Wake up, I want to show you something”.And he did! He brought me here, to this plot. He said: "Khalaf I want you to build a hotel here"It was not easy building the Metropolitan Hotel. I had no funds, and it was in the middle of nowhere.I am sure most of you remember what this area was like. But with the years, the Metropolitan Hotel became

the centre of the city and a popular destination with its varied outlets. I tell you this story, because this plot where you are sitting now, has been transformed into a plot where

each inch costs millions of dirhams. I chose to celebrate our 45th year here to let you know that we are reinforcing our projects like I am reinforcing the future of our group, growing with my country.

The UAE economy is strong, and growing, as are we. We are committed to the UAE and we believe in the vision of our leaders. This is where the growth is, and here are the facts:

In 2014, the UAE economy grew to AED 1.5 trillion. That’s a 4.8 per cent growth from the previous year. Our economy is five times bigger that it was 10 years ago, and more than 236 times what it was 43 years ago. And the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is predicting 3.8 per cent growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) this year.

The UAE has transformed from being an oil-based economy to a much more diversified economy. Today almost 70 per cent of our economy comes from non-oil sectors. This highlights that our leaders have succeeded in implementing a smart strategy of diversification. The UAE has also become an important hub connecting the East to the West.

The Al Habtoor Group is growing with the UAE, and we are proud of it. We has always recorded strong growth. In the past three years, our total revenue growth was 37 per cent. Our total net worth, over the same period, jumped 20 per cent. In the next five years, we are expecting revenue growth of 161 per cent. We are anticipating our net worth growth for the coming five years to be 85 per cent.

We are always thinking about success, and participating in the growth of the UAE. I thank God for our leaders. Without them, without their planning, we would not be here flourishing as we are today. It is very difficult to keep up with the speed of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum in regards to improvement and standards of living.

I am working at full speed in order to be parallel to the growth of my country, as I have committed since day one. It is great to work with leaders like Sheikh Khalifa and Sheikh Mohammed. Their commitment to excellence gives us the fuel and the encouragement to do more, and make the future happen now, rather than after 10 years. We need the government and the government needs us. Together we prosper.

The success of our country depends on us too. Each and every one of us has a role to play. We must not stand back and wonder, “Why is the government not doing this - or providing that?” Instead, we must ask ourselves, what have we done for our country today, and what can we do to make it better? This is our duty, our right, and our privilege. We are partners. We share the responsibility to ensure the growth, safety and security.

The UAE is the safe haven. This is the real land of opportunity. I always encourage people to invest here.Because we are a nation that only looks forward! We do not look back.

Going back to the Al Habtoor Group. I am proud of all our units. We are experiencing growth throughout.But, this is not time to sit-back and relax. We need to keep our energy and continue to drive our people to

succeed and stay ahead of the competition. This is not easy, and I cannot do it alone. I have a strong army behind me, my directors and all my employees are my generals. They all work under

my instruction and direction with strong work ethics and a positive spirit. Ladies and gentlemen, my friends, my colleagues, I wouldn’t be standing here today if it was not for the

employees of my company. I have thousands of people working for me, and a lot of them believe that they are working for me. But I like to correct them! I am working for them. It is my responsibility to help provide for them, to worry about them, make sure they have jobs and secure futures. I cannot rest, thinking and planning, worrying about their future. I sometimes cannot sleep.

Everyone knows that work is my number one priority. There is no such thing as retirement in my dictionary. It doesn’t exist, and should not exist. I believe that retirement is the graveyard.

At the Al Habtoor Group, we have 45 years of solid growth behind us. We have a bright future.And I have many more plans.

I want to end my speech reminding you that anything is possible as long as you are prepared to work for it. The UAE is a prime example of how hard work and determination pay off. Just 43 years ago, the country was sand and desert, and just look at it today. It is the best country in the world.

Ladies and gentlemen, the UAE is the land of opportunity – and I am living proof of that.I will not settle for anything but being number one. We will be number one, not only in the UAE or the

region, but we will also compete on a global level. This is my promise to you. Thank you.

a Gala event to mark the Al Habtoor Group’s 45th anniversary on Tuesday January 13th, 2014. Guests arrived on the red carpet at Al Habtoor City, for an exciting lineup.

Al Habtoor said, “Today we are marking the Al Habtoor Group’s 45th anniversary - 45 years of excellence, of success, of strong partnerships. I started my company in 1970. Little did I know then what I would achieve.”

He added, “I chose to mark our

45th anniversary at Al Habtoor City because of the significance of the land. I was gifted this land by His Highness Sheikh Rashid. This is the spot I built my first hotel, the Metropolitan Hotel in 1979. Back then it was our entry into something new – the UAE hospitality sector. This year we will open three hotels here – the St. Regis, the W hotel and the Westin. This is a new beginning.”

He said, “Like our motto states, the Al Habtoor Group is growing with the UAE, and we are proud of it. We are a living proof to the potential that exists

in my country.”“Al Habtoor Group has always

recorded strong growth,” he added. “In the past three years, our total revenue growth was 37 per cent, with an average annual revenue growth of 12.5 per cent. Our total net worth, over the same period, jumped 20 per cent, with an average annual net worth growth of nearly seven per cent. In the next five years, we are expected to see revenue growth jump to 161 per cent, which would equal an average annual growth of 32 per cent. We are anticipating our net worth growth for

“The success of our country depends

Following the Chairman’s speech, Tom Urquhart conducted a candid on-stage interview with Al Habtoor, and the Chairman was presented with a gold-plated tennis racquet by tennis commentator Khalid Al Ali, for his contribution to the sport over the

years. Guests were treated to a video

of young children dreaming of becoming ‘Habtoorians’. The event concluded with a special performance by Al Habtoor Group employees, choreographed by well-known British musical director and conductor Steve Sidwell, highlighting the strength and diversity of the Al Habtoor Group.

Al Habtoor said, “It was a very special moment to see staff perform on stage. It was a diverse mix of employees from all our units. I was very proud to see them perform together as one.”

he UAE conglomerate unveiled the three large scale projects at a press

conference on Tuesday December 9, 2014 at the Habtoor Grand Beach Resort & Spa, the Group’s 5-star luxury hotel in the Dubai Marina.

Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor, Founder and Chairman of the Group, said the hospitality an d residential projects will include the Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club - a six million square foot development located in Dubailand, costing AED 993 million, he also unveiled a new Metropolitan Hotel on Sheikh Zayed Road and Oasis Villas - a residential development in a prime location - with a combined cost

of AED 1.02 billion. “I am delighted to be unveiling today

the plans for these magnificent projects, which will be major new landmarks in Dubai and play a key part in delivering continued growth both for the UAE and for ourselves. As our company motto states, ‘we are growing with the UAE’, and its economic fundamentals support this vision. We have been in business close to 45 years and with projects such as these being added to our portfolio, there is no reason why the next 45 years should not see us enjoy even greater success,” Khalaf Al Habtoor said.

Khalaf Al Habtoor added, “We are approaching our 45th year with great success. We look forward to creating new landmarks for the city of Dubai. The new projects are in addition to our multi-use development, Al Habtoor City on Sheikh Zayed Road. We aim to open our three hotels there in 2015. These are exciting times for the Al Habtoor Group, we are gaining market share across all our businesses and successfully implementing our strategy of collaborating with other world-class brands.”

he 1 billion dirham project will incorporate a five-star hotel with up to 136 keys in addition

to 162 luxury bungalows. It will also include a polo club, a state-of-the-art polo academy, and a riding school with 500 stables.

The exclusive six million square foot inland development, located in Dubailand, is conveniently adjacent to Emirates Road and the Dubai-Al Ain Road, and within close proximity to Zayed University. The Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club will have the added benefit of all the amenities that Dubailand offers, including seven theme world’s that will

include theme parks, sports venues, eco-tourism, health facilities and a resort. The resort is designed by well-known British architects WS Atkins & Partners.

The Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club will also be home to four world-class polo fields, which will help reinforce Dubai’s role on the world polo circuit. The Polo Academy will offer riders of all ages and ability with a wide range of riding disciplines including dressage, riding and show jumping.

Mohammed Al Habtoor, Vice-Chairman and CEO said the state-of-the-art project will be a great addition for hotel guests and the polo and equestrian

T community, “Every guest of the hotel will be able to watch polo from their rooms, suites and any of the food and beverage outlet terraces.”

He added, “The new Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club will be a wonderful addition to the range of world-class facilities that both visitors and residents can enjoy. We are proud of our heritage in supporting the UAE’s development as an aspirational place to live and vacation and by adding a dedicated resort for polo, the sport of kings, to our portfolio, we are demonstrating our intent to enhance further the quality and variety of our assets and services.”

MetropolitanSheikh Zayed Road

he Al Habtoor Group, which celebrates its 45th anniversary this year, entered the hotel

space in 1979 with the Metropolitan Hotel. That hotel was demolished in 2012 to make way for the Group’s flagship project, Al Habtoor City, on the banks of the Dubai Water Canal. However, the Group announced it will revive the Metropolitan name with a new 4-star hotel on Sheikh Zayed Road on the junction with Al Thanya.

Commenting on the new Metropolitan, the Group’s Chairman Khalaf Ahmed Al Habtoor said, “We are pleased to bring back an old favourite. We started out

in the hotel business in 1979 with the Metropolitan Hotel, so it is fitting as we approach our 45th anniversary that we should revive an established brand that is so much part of our heritage. I feel sure that the new Metropolitan will enjoy the same success as the original one and become embedded in the hearts of Dubai’s residents and visitors alike.”

The Metropolitan Sheikh Zayed Road, forecast for completion in 2016, will have a total of 334 rooms and suites. It will also incorporate a lobby café, outdoor courtyard café, all-day dining restaurant and Don Corleone Italian restaurant. Other facilities include a ballroom

T with a pre-function room, five meeting rooms with breakout areas, a business centre and rooftop swimming pool and gymnasium. The hotel, designed by Khatib & Alami, will also see the revival of the Red Lion traditional English pub.

Al Habtoor added, “When we closed the Metropolitan, which was our first hotel in Dubai, I promised our regular customers that I would one day revive the Red Lion. Today, I am delivering on that promise. I am not nostalgic, but I am conscious of what our customers want, and I am confident that this new hotel will become a new destination in Dubai.”

xpanding on its real estate business, the Al Habtoor Group is building Oasis Villas,

a residential development alongside the Metropolitan Sheikh Zayed Road. Due for completion in 2016, the upmarket residential complex, with extensive landscaping, will consist of 74 units located in the heart of Jumeirah – situated at the junction of Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Thanya Street. The four, five and six bedroom villas will occupy a built up area of 20,947 square metres.

The residential complex will provide residents with access to a fully-equipped gymnasium, communal swimming pool, children’s play area and a jogging track.

his 43rd UAE National Day, marking the day in 1971 when our flag was hoisted high for the

very first time, is one of the most joyous occasions on the Emirati calendar, and rightly so.

Most people feel a sense of pride in their own country and its achievements. It’s only natural to feel affection for one’s own soil which holds so many memories and, indeed, even as a young man in Dubai - then part of the Trucial States under Britain’s protection - I was proud of my roots. But when the UK announced that the treaty would soon be null and void, there was a cloud of great uncertainty around all of us, while at the same time we were overjoyed that we were about to gain our independence.

How could we defend ourselves? Would we be able to stave off the big sharks swimming all around? One of those sharks, the Shah of Iran, took the opportunity to rob us of three islands even before the treaty was terminated.

We suffered hardships without realising that life was hard. We were without necessities, let alone luxuries, but in their place were powerful extended family bonds. Our treasure was dignity, honesty and trustworthiness. Our jewels were our parents, our siblings and our children. Those values have endured throughout the decades. We teach them to our children. My father always told me to hold my head up high and look at the person speaking to me straight in the eye. Emiratis are proud of who they are,

of the society they have created, which is one of very few multi-cultural places on earth that enjoys stability, security, peace and harmony.

Those days have gone. But now we have so much more to be proud of, thanks to our rulers who came together to build a strong unified nation that forges ahead year-upon-year and on so many levels is the envy of the region. Led by the ruler of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan, and Dubai’s ruler Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, together they created a blueprint for the future. They were true Arabs, true sons of the soil, whose wisdom didn’t derive from books but from their pure hearts and souls. They loved their people and wanted the best for them; they were down-to-earth and approachable. Everyone was welcome in their majlis from the humblest citizen to the heads of wealthy families. Everyone was treated with equal respect and we all had an opportunity to air our problems. They gave us the gift of self- confidence; they pushed us to work hard; they asked us to make sacrifices for our new country. We didn’t mind. We trusted those exceptional human beings with our lives.

Whereas once our forefathers dove for pearls, my generation and those that followed have created a regional diamond reflecting innovation, progressive thinking and opportunity. Ours is a nation of firsts, not because we want to boast of our achievements, but as a small country, we needed to inscribe our place on the map. I still remember a time when people I met abroad would say, “The UAE? Where’s that?” We couldn’t achieve worldwide recognition by being average or ordinary. The only route was the pursuit of excellence. Of course, nowadays everyone who isn’t living in a cave has heard of the Emirates, a name that’s become synonymous with

success. The UAE offers lifestyles that are

second to none. Our cutting-edge infrastructure is world-renowned. We have the finest educational institutes and medical facilities anywhere. And those of us who respect the laws of the land enjoy freedoms people in western countries can only dream about. Sure, they have a vote. They can choose their representatives. But, in all honesty, who can say with hand on heart that their

choice has ever made a real difference. Democracy in its true form, ‘rule by the people, for the people’, is an illusion. There are always taxes to pay but revenues are often frittered away on wars of choice. And as for equal opportunity, that’s just a carrot put out by states to keep the masses subdued while the fat cats line their pockets.

Democracy, which was delivered to Afghanistan and Iraq on the back of a bomb, is nothing but a con. People imagine they are empowered when, in reality, they have very little power. What’s more, they are forced to expend all their energies in holding down a job just so they can pay the bills. Millions don’t have jobs or even basic shelter. The homeless are flooding the streets of New York, Paris, London and other major western cities, whose governments

are far wealthier than the UAE in terms of technological advancements, geopolitical influence, and military might. There are people sleeping in their cars or under bridges. Others queue outside churches or charitable institutions for a hot meal. Families survive on food stamps. And what do human rights organisations say? Nothing; they’re too busy undermining countries in the Middle East and Latin America for supposed human rights

abuses.The western interpretation of

human rights principles is not ours. We don’t walk by a person who falls down ill in the street. We don’t drive past when we see someone stranded because of a flat tyre. We don’t abandon our parents in places where they die among strangers or throw our teenagers into the street to fend for themselves. We provide everything a citizen needs for a decent life in an aesthetically beautiful, safe environment, energised by economic growth and fertile soil for new ideas. HH Sheikh

Fighters have an “incredible enthusiasm and sense of victory” he told the BBC, adding that he saw hundreds flooding in daily from all over the world to join them. They boast about being willing to kill millions, he said, claiming Al Qaeda is “peanuts” in comparison. Interestingly, he maintains, “Only Arabs can stop IS, the Western countries will never stop IS.” I don’t necessarily agree with that statement. If the west showed determination, the Islamic State would hardly rate a mention in history books. US-led coalitions have unseated Saddam Hussein, Muammar Qaddafi, the Taliban and numerous Latin American regimes.

Nevertheless, Todenhofer has a

re terrorists gaining international respectability? That question isn’t as

ridiculous as it may sound. The other day, while watching a popular news channel, I was stunned by a ticker that read “UN Secretary-General urges Islamic State captors of Jordanian pilot, whose warplane was shot down in Syria, to treat him ‘in accordance with international humanitarian law’.”

What on earth is Ban Ki-Moon thinking when he is the voice of an organization representing 193 member states? Does he seriously expect bombers, torturers and rapists, who’ve been merrily slicing off heads and selling women in a slave market, to abide by the Geneva Conventions or humanitarian law? And, moreover, the very suggestion gives those creatures and their ‘caliphate’ international recognition. What is the world coming to?

There’s no getting away from it, 2014 was a good year for terrorists. Why, because the former world’s policeman, the United States, along with its

traditional allies, has been falling short in their job. The Commander-in-Chief of America’s Armed Forces President Obama has failed in his efforts to eradicate ‘the Islamic State’ in Iraq and Syria, even though it poses a threat to many other regional states as well US interests.

Such ineffectiveness not only empowers this band of killers, it entices more recruits. According to Hisham Al-Hashimi, a security expert based in Baghdad, the Islamic State’s numbers have swelled to 100,000, whereas a year ago, it was estimated to have no more than 15,000 – 20,000 fighters.

Almost all military strategists agree that merely dropping bombs won’t cut it, including US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Martin Dempsey and former US Defence Secretary Robert Gates. Senator Lindsey Graham told CNN “There is no way I can see to fix the problem in Iraq and Syria without American ground troops. The job of the commander-in-chief is to protect the country…”

point. Arabs are under the greatest threat. There is a sword hanging over all our heads. Yet, most Arab countries are turning a blind eye. A few have engaged their air forces, but they can’t finish the job on their own. If the Arab world joined hands to share human intelligence, surveillance capabilities, military hardware, airpower and manpower, the Islamic State would be decimated in a matter of months.

With our region collapsing like a house of cards due to terror organizations, such as the Islamic State, Al Qaeda and the Al-Nusra Front in Syria and Iraq, Shiite Houthi rebels in Yemen, Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis on the Egyptian Sinai Peninsula and Ansar Al-Sharia in Libya – all different facets of the same coin - questions must be asked.

For instance, why is the Islamic State’s siege on 350 villages near the Syrian town of Kobani close to the Turkish border still ongoing? Clearly coalition airstrikes have achieved little in more than three months.

Secondly, when the world and its wife are aware that Turkey is the terrorists’ transit destination, why isn’t President Recep Tayyip Erdogan being asked to explain himself? Last week,

Turkey’s former Foreign Minister Yaşar Yakış and a co-founder of the ruling AKP Party, admitted that ISIL “has benefitted from Turkey’s tolerance in running its activities”. And although he dismissed accusations that his country had “intentionally helped” Al Qaeda and IS, asked whether Islamic State members had picnicked in Istanbul, he agreed, yes, it’s “the face of the iceberg at first sight”. If I was an American, I would be tempted to respond, if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it is a duck.

Thirdly, how was the ISIL that’s now morphed into the Islamic State created? Where does its weapons and funding come from? Which countries are buying its stolen oil? And why aren’t those states being internationally sanctioned?

Lastly, are were seriously to believe that the world’s most militarily advanced nations with the planet’s most sophisticated surveillance and intelligence capabilities are impotent to stem terrorism’s proliferation in the Middle East or to liberate captured territories where civilians are crying out to be rescued? President Obama has left those victims to the wolves just as he earlier failed to rescue the Syrian

people from the missiles, the chemical attacks and the prisons of one of the most brutal dictators the world has ever known. Likewise, he didn’t succeed to thwart Yemen becoming an Iranian hub since Houthi rebels stormed the capital in September and imposed conditions on Yemen’s government. Yemen is now a terrorists’ free-for-all. An Al-Qaeda in Yemen even has the audacity to launch a magazine dedicated to “Jihad on America” with tips on how to blow-up commercial airliners.

Who should be held responsible for this mess all around us? I am not in position to be able to accurately pinpoint blame because I don’t have access to insider intelligence. But these questions are valid and deserve answers.

In short, 2014 will be remembered as a perilous year in a world without decisive leadership. No leader has displayed heroic qualities. No leader has had the courage of his convictions. In short, most have been a disappointment. Unless they miraculously come to their senses, we can only trust in the Creator’s mercy. Happy New Year! May God make it so!

lobal stock markets are experiencing a bumpy ride. Investor confidence is shaken.

Analysts largely blame falling oil prices - which have hit five-year lows at US$ 62 a barrel due to a glut in the market combined with reduced demand from countries undergoing a reduction in growth. This market slide is based on wrong thinking. The time to be cautious is when oil prices go sky high, as they have in the past, triggering inflation.

The fact is that cheaper oil is an absolute benefit to humanity but unfortunately, investors are falling for warnings from scaremongering pundits, who speak from a purely academic perspective, and are negatively reacting to what should be good news. My advice is to quit heeding doom and gloom merchants, whose ill thought-out warnings are behind the current volatility – and instead rely on good old-fashioned common sense.

Lowered oil prices are a boon for manufacturers (especially those using oil-related products), export/importers, airlines, cruise lines, road transporters and, of course, tourists who benefit from reduced airfares, as well as anyone who owns a vehicle. In many countries, including the United States, prices are coming down at the pump. Corporations, small businesses and home owners will reap rewards in terms of cheaper

electricity. This translates to consumers having more disposable income to spend elsewhere, which, in turn, fuels the economy increasing employment opportunities. Furthermore, lower oil prices help keep down inflation – and, therefore, interest rates, which is good for business, ordinary borrowers and mortgagees.

While it’s true to say that the short-term winners here are non-oil producing states, certainly in the case of oil producing countries in the Arabian Gulf are well-placed to withstand this temporary blip. As one magazine correctly points out, “Huge fiscal reserves that they [Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates] have built-up over the last several years mean they will easily be able to keep spending high.” Put simply, there is no need whatsoever to press the panic button.

Thanks to less expensive oil, the economies of countries that haven’t been looking too healthy are beginning to recover. Take Turkey, for example. An official from BNP Paribas Investment partners says it’s “the best thing that can happen to Turkey. Every US$ 10 drop in the oil price improves the current account deficit by US$ 4.5 billion.” Lower bills for crude oil imports have greatly benefited Asian economies with at least three Asian states seizing the opportunity

to end fuel and diesel subsidies that have weighed heavily on their fiscal purses. Once faltering economies begin to bloom again, the global demand for oil will blossom pushing up prices. Let’s not forget that our world is a global village; when one part of town sneezes everywhere else catches cold. So if lowered oil prices contribute to the lifting of struggling economies, in the long run, the entire planet is the beneficiary.

There is also an ethical/humanitarian component to this topic. Poorer countries, even in our Middle East region, are being made poorer by high energy bills. The higher the oil prices, the higher the fiscal debt, which is impacting ordinary folk who suffer from regular power cuts. Those states deserve a break!

Investors in the Gulf shouldn’t listen to negative sentiment. This area is one of the World’s wealthiest. It is politically stable and our leaders have their hands firmly on the rudder. They know how to steer us through choppy waters especially after learning lessons from the 2008 global downturn which occurred through no fault of our own. Credit must go to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and other GCC countries, which stood firm against various OPEC member states keen to diminish oil production in order to generate a hike in prices in response to political or economic pressures.

Gulf leaderships are not reactive in a kneejerk fashion; they carefully study the big picture and weigh pros and cons over the long term, which is why our area has enjoyed phenomenal economic success.

Our company results remain positive, whether government, private or family-owned. In recent years, our economic health has gone from strength to strength. Our infrastructure is second-to-none and our per-capita earnings are some of the highest anywhere.

Keep in mind that even if share prices take a hit, business goes on as usual. Companies are unaffected by market losses and gain, which are merely normal fluctuations based on transactions between sellers and buyers, usually driven by profit-taking. What goes down will go up. And, moreover, shareholders very often benefit from higher dividends when share prices are depressed because companies often issue higher dividends and share buybacks to keep investors interested.

To quote Stephen Moore, the former director of fiscal policy studies at the CATO Institute, now chief economist at the Heritage Foundation, “Some people are just genetically incapable of accepting good news. In recent weeks the media have inundated us with stories of the latest crisis in America: low oil prices…It seems only yesterday that the doomsayers were warning that high oil prices were a harbinger of economic collapse. Now it is bargain-basement prices that are the curse... More cheap oil means greater prosperity. Moore wrote those words as long ago as March, 1999 and history proved him right. If the past is a strong predication of the future, then so am I. So sit tight and enjoy the ride. The only storm clouds on the horizon are figments of imagination within our own minds.

Majdi Abed, French Consul General to Dubai, introduced Al Habtoor to Anne-Marie Idrac, Special Representative of the French Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development for Economic Affairs with the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Also present was François Sporrer, Regional Manager-Middle East for the French Trade Commission, and

Emirates airline recently

commenced a daily direct service to Budapest making it easier to travel there. Plus Hungarian low-cost airline now offers flights direct from Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport.

In June, Al Habtoor launched the Hungarian-language edition of his best-selling autobiography ‘Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor - the Autobiography’ in Hungary. The account of his journey through life is now available in three languages.

Al Habtoor gives British girl with incurable eye disease a holiday of a lifetime

Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor, Chairman of the Al Habtoor Group, has given a seven-year-old British girl and her family the holiday of a lifetime in Dubai. Molly Bent, who suffers from a rare and incurable genetic eye disease which causes blindness, was invited for a weeklong stay at one of Al Habtoor’s five star hotels.

Molly caught Al Habtoor’s attention when he saw a report about her condition on a news report earlier in the year. It stated that in December 2013 Molly was diagnosed with the degenerative condition Retinitis Pigmentos and was registered visually impaired. The report outlined a ‘bucket list’ of things Molly wanted to do before going blind. Al Habtoor donated to a charity set up for Molly through his foundation, the Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor Foundation.

Al Habtoor said, “It was a pleasure to host such a lovely family in Dubai. I am happy they got to see some of the highlights of Dubai. Molly is a lovely girl and I pray to God that her condition can be cured. I am willing to help fund any research necessary to make this possible.”

Upon arrival in Dubai, Al Habtoor hosted the family at one of his hotels, the five star Habtoor Grand Beach Resort & Spa, and set a busy schedule to see some of Dubai’s most famous attractions for families. Molly was accompanied by her mother Eve, her father Chris and her siblings Charlotte, 5, and Samuel, 2.

The itinerary started with a penguin encounter, a swim with the dolphins, a

visit to one of Dubai’s top water parks, as well as a trip to the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo, and Kidzania – an interactive award-winning edutainment center, and a desert Safari. To top it off the family visited the world’s largest shopping center Dubai Mall, and went to the observation deck located on level 124 of the famous landmark – the Burj Khalifa.

“I had so much fun in Dubai and I love it lots!” said Molly. “My favourite bit of the whole trip was getting to swim with Lily the dolphin because it was amazing. I got to dance with her and stroke her, and she was so soft. I also got to go to the top of the tallest tower in the world, which was awesome. I could see everything from up there, I could nearly see my house from the top," she added.

The family also had the opportunity

to visit Al Habtoor at the head office of the Al Habtoor Group, a UAE conglomerate.

Molly’s father, Chris Bent, said, “We have been overwhelmed with the kindness and generosity of Mr Khalaf Al Habtoor in helping our daughter Molly. Knowing that our daughter has a genetic eye condition Mr Khalaf has provided her with wonderful experiences that she never would have been able to have otherwise.”

“Molly has been able take in sights and enjoy experiences that she could have only dreamed of,” added Eve Bent, Molly’s mother. “She will now have those memories to cherish forever, which as a parent is the greatest gift you can wish for your child. We cannot thank Mr Al Habtoor enough for the memories he has given our daughter.”

لقــد جعلتنــي الشــخص الــذي انــا عليــه اليــوم.

فــزاد ذلــك مــن حبــي واحرتامــي لــه. كان مرشــدي. وقــد دفعنــي بقــوة نحــو النجــاح.مل أكــن أحــب زيــارة املجالــس. لكــن والــدي شــجعني قائــال يل: "عليــك دامئــا أن تــزور الشــيخ راشــد. ســوف تتعلــم منــه

الكثــر!" وحــدث ذلــك فعــال! فقــد أصبحــت قريبــا جــدا منــه. لقــد اســتلهمت مــن إيجابيتــه وطاقتــه ورؤيتــه.

اليــوم لــدي أحــالم أخــرى. أحلــم مبســتقبل أفضــل للعــامل. أحلــم بــأن يعــم الســالم والوئــام والتســامح واألمــن. علينــا أن نحمــي عاملنــا مــن أجــل أوالدنــا وأحفادنــا. عــى عكــس السياســين الغربيــن، نحــن نقــرن القــول بالفعــل.

أعــى بكثــر مــن الهــدف الــذي وضعتــه األمــم املتحــدة. تتخــذ دولــة اإلمــارات خطــوات اســتباقية للمســاعدة عــى جعــل العــامل مكانــا أفضــل، عــرب املســاهمة يف تحســن حيــاة ــاء ــرص أفضــل وبن ــى اســتحداث ف ــة واملســاعدة ع ــى الســاحة الدولي ــن ع ــاء الســالم واألم ــن األشــخاص ويف إرس مالي
