Name: Kevin Bennett Number of years at ABA: 2 Grades of children at ABA: Grade 7 and Grade 5 Nationality: British

REASONS FOR STANDING:

Previously I served on the Board of the United World College of South East Asia (UWCSEA) in Singapore. UWCESEA is recognized as one of the leading international schools in the world. It has a population of over 5,500 students representing 82 different nationalities. ABA’s philosophy, mission, vision and values are very similar to those of UWCSEA. During my three-year tenure on the UWCSEA Board the school faced many of the same challenges that ABA currently does. UWCSEA built a new campus and had to learn to operate over two, it introduced a one on one IT device programme, undertook different international assessments, and had the ongoing task of recruiting the best teachers to provide the best education to its students during a time of challenging economic conditions (at the time it was the financial crisis of 2008) I believe the experiences gained whilst serving on the UWCSEA Board give me the ability to immediately help the ABA Board, its Chairman and the Superintendent deliver the best environment and education for ABA’s students. On the UWCSEA Board I served on both the Facilities and Finance Committees and would thus be able to serve and contribute significantly to either of these committees of the ABA Board. In addition to the above having worked for different multi-national companies in three different regions I have the relevant management and work experience required for such an important role as serving on the ABA Board of Directors. Finally, having earned a BA in Biology at Oxford University and an MBA at INSEAD business school in Frances I have been lucky enough to have had first-hand experience of great education in action and would always strive to achieve the best for the school’s students and its community. REASONS FOR STANDING: I have always been passionately involved in my children’s schools. I have contributed in various roles, from informal volunteering and participation to being the President of the PTA. In ABA I am the HRP for two grades, I believe that I can positively increase my contribution to the school by being a member of the board. In my previous job, I worked with the United Nation Population Fund where I was the National Program Officer for the GCC region. My focus areas of expertise were adolescence, women empowerment and Gender Equality and sustainable programing. A big part of my job was fundraising for our local programs as well as mobilizing all potential stakeholders. I believe I can bring a lot of this experience to ABA’s board. Further, I have a Master’s Degree in Environmental Studies with a focus on sustainable development, which I believe can help in the strategic planning of our school goals. By being a member of the board, I hope to work with everyone involved to ensure that our ABA students are not just prepared for the future, but are given an edge over the rest. 2. Having my children at ABA, I would like also to see our community continue to study in a safe and secure school environment.

Our son attends K3 at ABA and our daughter will soon be joining the ABA community too. ABA is a critical focal point of our family life in Oman, and I am a strong believer that education is the key to success for our children. REASONS FOR STANDING:

I graduated from Boston University in systems engineering in 1996. As an engineer, I have first handed experience on multiple occasions how the technological revolution of the 21st century has helped society to address a number of key challenges facing global industries. Some of the challenges of the 21st century education systems face can seem very daunting, especially in the area of transportation infrastructure, energy management and generation and climate changes to name but a few. In this fast-moving world, students used to be trained to manage and cope with the growing challenges, complexities and uncertainties of the modern global world. I believe embodying ABA values in the mind of our young learners is a pillar of modern education. As an industry insider and a global citizen, I would personally like to contribute to the growth and development of ABA in order to deliver future quality leaders. Name: Sara Susana Gomes Marques Number of years at ABA: 3 Grades of children at ABA: Grades 4, 3 and 1 Nationality: Portuguese

REASONS FOR STANDING: I am a proud mom of 3 boys and a person that loves to work hand, do sports and enjoy good moments with the ones I love most. One of the things I most enjoy in life is to make things happen. I am not a kind of person to stay still and wait; to me, if there is something that needs to be done, I am happy to do it. I am a litigation lawyer so I’m used to solving people’s problems and challenging situations. Being able to help others in hard moments of their lives and tell I have made a real positive impact in someone’s life is what makes me happy in my professional life and that’s why I’m passionate about my work. During studying a masters in Political Science, I had the opportunity to study Public Policies in Education and this is one area of major interest for me. My passion is to understand how rules and regulations change behaviours as well as how small actions can have big impacts. For the last 3 years I’ve interacted with ABA, I’ve observed that the impact of the school in the ABA community is impressive. Here everyone feels welcome, engaged and proud to be part of it. This is only possible when all stakeholders are committed and thrill to participate, and especially due to the silent hard work the Board has been doing. I would feel very honoured to be given the opportunity to contribute to the ABA community and, especially, to ABA school as a member of the Board. PREVIOUS POSTS WITHIN THE SCHOOL OR ASSOCIATION (e.g. PTA, Board), OTHER SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS OF BENEFIT TO THE BOARD: Homeroom parent or assistant home room parent. REASONS FOR STANDING: I understand that becoming a school Board Member is a serious commitment and takes quite a bit of time and dedication. However, I find that it can also be rewarding as it would allow me to contribute to the growth and development of a quality international school by sharing my business and life experience to the benefit of the school and its stakeholders. At the same time it’s an opportunity to learn more about education and broaden my perspective with the experience, skills and views of the other Board Members and the school management team as well as enhance my knowledge of corporate governance and board matters. PREVIOUS POSTS WITHIN THE SCHOOL OR ASSOCIATION (e.g. PTA, Board), OTHER SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS OF BENEFIT TO THE BOARD: I have been serving in the Board and Committees of industrial companies in Oman for the past few years which enabled me to acquire some knowledge in this field. In addition, I have attended a certified course by MUDARA – Institute of Directors (Dubai) on Corporate Governance and Director Development. I have an extensive experience in financial matters which could allow me to give a solid contribution to ABA Finance Committee.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND: MSc Equivalent (Licenciatura) in Economics CURRENT JOB: Senior Investment Manager, Takamul Investment Company (Oman Oil Group)

Name: Vijay Gill Number of years at ABA: 1 Grades of children at ABA: Grade 6, KG1 Nationality: German/Indian

REASONS FOR STANDING: I am passionate about life-long learning, of which school education is one of the foundations. As I see things, ABA has 2 broad challenges:

• As a non-selective community school, ABA still needs to continuously improve its IB standards and scores and reach and compete with other top international IB schools.

• As a non-profit school, ABA still needs to attract the best teachers, have excellent facilities and offer both breadth and depth in the programme.

In order to help ABA work through these challenges, what I can offer are:

• An intimate knowledge of 2 very successful international IB school groups on a personal basis including some of their best practices.

• A varied international business background spanning 4 continents, allowing me to bring different ideas and best practices to ABA.

• Over 2 decades of Board participation and skills that are based on proper governance practices, on driving strategic vision and on addressing the concerns and ideas of all stakeholders.

• My leadership style has a foundation of transparency and trust, and I would always be an open and accessible conduit between parents and the Board/Executive Management.

• Having come from a multicultural background myself (Indian + German parents), I have keen understanding of the challenges and opportunities ABA students face in the world after school.

• My schooling at the most renowned school in India was a totally holistic education; the academics were supported by comprehensive sports, artistic, nature hobby, and community service activities. I am a strong believer in a rounded school education to prepare one well for later life.

• I have been in Oman eleven years and have close links to the community.

My 2 children have just embarked on a 6 - 8 year journey at ABA, and my wife and I would like them and all other students to graduate from a centre of learning that strives to be the best, in the broadest sense. I would like to contribute towards this goal.

Message from the Superintendent

Tomorrow is the highlight of the year for many – Graduation Day. This is an auspicious day. Our Grade 12 students will be receiving ABA Diplomas in recognition of their achievements and the closing of their school days. For many students, the significance of this day may not yet be fully realized. In addition to Graduation, relief at the end of the exams, anticipation of upcoming holidays and the prospect of an exciting new chapter in their lives at university are probably foremost in their minds. However, when the dust settles, I sincerely hope that all them will reflect warmly on their experiences at ABA and carry fond memories with them as they leave Oman for distant parts. While the miles may separate them, nobody is more than social media away. They have truly been a wonderful class who I am sure will stay in touch with each other. I do hope that those passing through will return to ABA. They will always be welcome. On behalf of the ABA community I wish all students leaving ABA this year all the very best for the future.

Message from the Elementary Principal

By the time the students arrive to school next week on Sunday morning, Ramadan will have begun. This will be the first time in many years that we have had extended days of Ramadan during the school year (last year Ramadan began on the last few days of school). With that, the school, including the Elementary Section, have developed various guidelines for teachers and students to follow in terms of eating and drinking during the hours of fasting. These guidelines have been shared with the teachers who then presented them to their students. In addition, some children have shared with their teacher that he/she might be fasting. The grade two teachers have sent a communication to the parents of their students requesting pertinent information about each child’s fast. I would ask that any parent that has a child fasting, please answer the questions below and send the information to the teacher. We want to know exactly what your family’s expectations are for your child ensuring that they are supported this Ramadan.

• Name of student

• Is he/she fasting?

• Is he/she able to drink water?

• Is he/she able to eat a food/snack if feeling ill or too hungry?

• Is he/she able to participate in PE class?

• Is he/she able to participate in Swimming?

The teachers have submitted their end-of-year reports to the Elementary Administration team to be read and review. Parents can look to access these reports online through the Parent Portal on the ABA website on the afternoon of June 6. I would suggest that you be proactive and try to access your personal space on the portal. If there are any issues with logging in, please contact the ABA IT Helpdesk at [email protected] where they can provide the support you may need.

MYP E-assessment: Onscreen Tests with Grade 8 Mathematics!

E-assessments are officially recognized by Ofqual (UK) and are done in two formats, eportfolio and onscreen assessments. ePortfolios are a collation of a student’s work which is assessed based on a variety of supervised tasks over a period of time. Onscreen assessments however, are done on a personal computer but in a normal examination atmosphere. For MYP, the onscreen assessments will be in Mathematics, Sciences, Individuals and Societies, Language and Literature and Interdisciplinary.

In May 2019, the current Grade 8 students, will be the first in Oman to sit the MYP e-assessments. As part of the long term strategy, it was planned to formally assess our own capabilities in running an e-Assessment in this year. This was to ensure that the students got adequate practice on examination expectations as well to determine how challenging it would be to support 88 students on their computers. This pilot was done this week in the Grade 8 mathematics End of Year Examinations. The following photos were taken in the exam room.

Page 12: AL NOOR-ABA NEWSabaoman.org/wp-site/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Newsletter-25th-May-2017.pdf · • demonstrate and reinforce the institution’s core value and ethos. ... Bank Sohar

The examination started on time and most of the expected issues were resolved quickly with the vast majority of students arriving well prepared with chargers and laptops. A small number had low charges on their machines but extension leads were available to support.

Throughout the next school year, the plan is to continue to prepare students by providing regular onscreen assessments in other subjects in an attempt to ensure that student develop confidence in this approach to testing.

The next steps for e-assessment are:

a. Continued professional development of our staff b. Close engagement with IBO to understand new requirements annually c. Increased networking with other IB MYP schools d. Regular onscreen assessments for students in the five areas throughout Grade 9 e. Improvement in the BYOD programme f. Investments in new software for e-assessment g. E-portfolios launch in Music, Drama, Art, Design, Languages and PHE h. Pilot programme in June 2018 i. Regular information sessions for parents

As you can see, there is a long term plan that will ensure that e-assessment in MYP is a success in the ensuing years.

Messages for the Community Smokin’ HOT SHOTS?

Students from Grades 3-12 competed in the annual ‘Half Shot Hot Shot’ competition last Thursday to the roars of peers cheering them on. Congratulations to the winners of the VOX Movie Tickets, for sinking a basket from the half way line, Kate Verling (Gr4), Saleem Al-Saleh (Gr11), and Afnan Azi Akbar (Gr9) – who sunk two baskets to take away two movie vouchers!

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our ABA community for supporting our last and final event, and the one which we believe is one of the most important, our Teacher Appreciation brunch. Once again you outdid yourselves providing delicious dishes, and the table in the staff lounge was laden with goodies throughout the day. It was greatly appreciated by all of our deserving teachers and staff. Copper restaurant in Qurum kindly set up a coffee machine in the lounge, so the teachers were able to enjoy their brew of choice throughout the day. One of the highlights of the day were the massages provided by Ayana Spa.
