It is common for an audience to become amazed and awed at the antics of the

Mentalist. But when an audience of magicians and mentalists is amazed at the performance on

stage, you know you have something to conjure with. Such a thing happened at the Collector's

Work Shop Convention, at Bethesda, Md. last April 29th to May 2nd.

A Mentalist competing with magicians won first prize! Probably for the first time. Secondly Count

Anthony from Madrid performed his show, unsolicited! First to a small group which soon grew to a large

crowd.

The Count did his Q & A Test which he does very well. But what amazed the Mentalists was his dramatic opening effect. The Count makes a fast entrance holding a felt-tip pen and a small clipboard that holds a few blank cards. He then writes a number on the top card on the clipboard and points to anyone to callout a number from 1 to 100. Immediately he turns the clipboard over to show the same number and then scales the card into the audience. This is repeated a second and third time, very fast.

What amazed the Mentalists was that the numbers on the cards were written in ink! The lines making the numerals were thick and large like if writen with a felt tip pen!

There is nothing new about ink-writing Swamis, These have been around for years BUT read on.

THE GREAT REVELATION. I do not get impressed easily. One time I spent an evening at the home of a Mentalist who spoke for hours about his world shaking Mental effects. At the end of the evening I had learned nothing and had forgotten his talk as fast as I heard it. I considered his mentalism "hanky-panky." For these were magic tricks done with sticks and small tags, etc.

THE COUNT

ANTHONY BLAKE OF MADRID

On the other hand what Count Anthony revealed to me in the privacy of my den appeared to me as a gift from the Gods. The Count showed me his Swami gimmick that clipped unto his thumb nail, a tiny thing hardly noticeable. Then he said, "My Swami gimmick replenishes its own ink automatically!" My head swooned. - - "What did you say?" I asked. He repeated, "My Swami gimmick is always ready for it replenishes its own ink automatically."

I was stunned! I do not believe it, thought I. But the Count was kind enough to reveal his great secret. He took from his pocket what I choose to call "The Sacred Ink Well," for want of a better name. This was nothing more than a desk ink pad. (A very cleverly prepared ink pad that only a Mentalist had need for.) ·After each show the Count simply takes his thumb writer and places it into the ink pad and closes it and the gimmick instantly absorbs ink from the pad and is ready for the next show!

The Count claims that he invented this method all by his lonely self and that no one else in the world knows about it. To be honest I found this unbelievable. There must be some one else who knows this ruse, thought I. So after the Count left, I called some well informed Swami fans and asked them about it. All said they had never heard of it. In fact one fan almost threw the phone at me. "There is no such thing." he screamed.

Here follows, with the Counts permission, the details on how the reader can prepare his own Sacred Ink Well. To my knowledge, it appears in print for the first time!

Page 4: Al Mann - The Gilded Quill

THE COUNT'S GIMMICK is a thumb nail clip-on Swami. Fig. 1. It is made by a jeweler of non-corrosive metal. The Count says that the ink contains an acid that will eat up the metal unless it is non-corrosive. The tip of a felt tip pen is cut off and then inserted into the Swami in place of the pencil lead.

THE SACRED INK WELL. For this you will need an ink pad. Due to the many popular rubber-stamp games for children, ink pads come in many sizes and shapes. These are sold at stationery and dollar novelty stores. I bought one that looks like a small bottle two inches high and had an ink pad the size of a dime. The reader should choose his own size. Here I will describe the ink pad used by Count Anthony.

The ink pad is square and measures 3 by 4 inches and is half an inch thick. The ink sponge in the pad must be sealed by covering it with a piece of thick but flexible polyethylene film or any thick soft plastic material.

Let Fig. 2 represent the piece of plastic to cover the ink sponge. This piece should be the size of the ink pad 3 by 4 inches. Next drill a tiny hole in the center of the covering as shown by the arrow in Fig. 2. The hole must be a hair smaller than the diameter of the felt tip that will be used. Now if you stick the point of the felt tip of your swami into the tiny hole, it should fit snuggly and remain anchored in place.

,

Fig. 2

Next place the plastic sheet covering over the ink sponge and sealed it with a good strong adhesive tape all around. The ink sponge in your ink pad is now sealed, except for the tiny hole and after the swami is inserted into the tiny hole, no amount of ink should leak out of it so that it can be safely carried in the pocket or brief case.

NOW! When you stick the felt tip of your swami into the tiny hole and close the ink pad box, your swami will replenish its own ink supply by capillary action! Automatically, of course, while you enjoy some Columbian coffee!

The ink pad box is kept closed by encircling it with rubber bands. That will keep the swami under pressure and in place and ready for the next show!

THE CLIBOARD. The clipboard used is not as innocent as it

3

Page 5: Al Mann - The Gilded Quill

may look for it too is part of the conspiracy. The clipboard used by the Count is cleverly designed for the sole purpose of assiting in the writing with the swami on the right thumb tip.

Please note Fig. 3. This shows a small clipboard measuring about 3 by 4 inches, just large enough to hold four or five blank cards which are used to write the numbers on. Fig. 3 shows the back of the clipboard which has a piece of material that sticks out perpendicular to the board. When holding the clipboard in the palm of the right hand, the material that sticks out is held between the first and second fingers of the right hand. That frees the right thumb for the writing! Clever? Of course! The back of the clipboard is covered with felt material.

THE LONG WRITERS. The Long Writers, Fig. 4, were first writen up in Phanta Graphs (early 1981). These were declared pipe dreams by the critics. In spite of that two models were made that I know about. I made a crude model which worked but I did not have a workable or practical ink well so I shelved it.

Ray Piatt made one and said it was the greatest gimmick ever. Ray had no patience for writing with the long writer so he also shelved it.

Actually, writing with the long writers is most easy after a bit of practice. All that is needed is to learn to write numbers zero to nine.

But now with the secret of the Sacred Ink Well, the Long Writers will come of age. All you need is to stick the business end of the Long Writer into the hole of the ink well and tie the whole thing with rubber bands and carry it in your brief case and you are ready to do miracles.

Fig. 4

There it is Gentlemen. You got to admit that here is one fabulous secret. If you are the type of Mentalist that loves to dazzled your audiences silly, this is for you. What person in his right mind is going to believe that you have a tiny almost invisible tool that writes like a felt tip pen? The Count claims that he can write 57 characters, numbers or letters before his swami runs dry!

To replenish the ink in the well, the Count uses a hypodermic needle.

A BONUS. GYSEL'S MASTER FEKE

Geltlemen, be my guest and feast your eyes on some ancient manuscripts from the AME files. Pages 6 and 7 show true copies from the original papers.

Page six shows an instruction sheet put out by Robert Gysel of Toledo, Ohio, in 1922. These instructions are for a special type of swami which Gysel called the Master Feke. The swami feke came with the instructions, but these fekes are long lost. But as per the instructions we can tell that the feke was "clipped" onto the second finger (meaning no doubt the middle finger) and the lead of the feke stuck up between the second and third fingers on the back of the hand. The gimmick would then look like in Fig. 5

Fig. 5

Now if you have a nicely decorated ring or a ring skull on it, you could stick the lead of a pencil into its make a Super Gysel's Master Feke! Do give it some thought maybe you can make a Super Gysel Master Ink Feke!

While talking to the boys at the Collector's Work Shop Comvention, I was told about a $10,000 contraption that was invented for the CIA that can actually read sealed messages! This amazing apparatus was indeed elaborate. It has a miniature X-ray camara whose picture is picked up by a miniature T.V. receiver camara and then transmitted to a miniature T. V. tube where the master spy reads it. The high cost of the machine is due no doubt to the many miles of wires which cross everywhich way. And of course it is fully equipped with merkelmeters, idiotgrams, perimeters and live photo cells.

It appears that the CIA has not heard of carbona. So I am reprinting the Gysel $2 gimmick for the reading of sealed messages on page 7. Hope the CIA reads it.

Other magicians claimed to thumb tip and it has appeared is Gysel who first told us about it. as a medium before he became Mentalist. He knew much.

THE TAIWAN DOUBLE BILLET PEN! In case you have not noticed, the dollar novelty stores are selling a pen-like apparatus called The Retractable Eraser Holder which I call The Taiwan Pen because these come from Taiwan. This pen holds a pencil-eraser stick 3 inches long. Fig. 6.

Amazingly the plunger that pushes out the eraser stick works in both directions, so that if the eraser stick is removed the pen can hold two rolled up billets with predictions! Fig. 6

These Taiwan Pens are inexpensive selling for a dollar and a few pennies. So if you see these you should buy a dozen for you can really use them to baffle an audience at the table or in your den.

As it is the pen can work as a two-way prediction, ball games etc. But with a small effort you can appear to make one of multiple predictions. Take for example the 5-star Miracle deck that forces one out of four cards. Two Taiwan Pens can be prepared with four billets. I would have one pen hiding behind a book and the other one in my inside coat pocket. After the card is forced you simply bring out the correct pen and say, "Guess what this is? This pen serves me to hold my prediction capsule." "please note," and here you push out the correct billet saying. "I do not want to touch it. Please take it, unroll it and read my prediction."

By the same token you deck force one of six cards. as many pens as you wish!

can prepare three pens and have the But why stop there. You can prepare

In handling, after the correct billet is forced out of the pen and while the VIP is reading it, you drop the other billet in your lap out of sight or into the palm of your left hand or wherever. Then they can examine the pen.

IMPORTANT: Use paper the same color as your pen. My pen has a yellow color.

BUT PLEASE, do not try to fool your audience by having the rolled billet appear inside a sealed envelope. Any idiot can tell that you put the billet there with the Taiwan Pen.
