2017 FURMAN PALADINS FOOTBALL 2018 FURMAN PALADINS FOOTBALL / 1 FurmanPaladins.com @PaladinFootball FURMAN LOOKS TO MAINTAIN LATE SEASON MOMENTUM SATURDAY AT MERCER u SETTING THE SCENE...For the second consecutive season Furman, winners of five of its last six games, enters the regular season finale contending for a share of a Southern Conference champion- ship. A year ago the Paladins needed a win at Samford to claim a share of the league crown but came up short, 26-20, to the Bulldogs in Birmingham. This year the road to putting a hand on the Clarence Stasavich Trophy requires a Furman win over Mercer and a Samford road triumph over ETSU. The Buccaneers at 6-1 in SoCon play have already claimed at least a share of the 2018 title. Wofford, which finished SoCon play at 6-2, can also claim a share of the championship with an ETSU loss to Samford. A Furman victory on Saturday would also secure a winning season for the Paladins. Furman has gone 11-4 in SoCon play over the last two seasons under head coach Clay Hendrix. u HENDRIX & LAMB...Saturday’s Furman-Mercer clash will feature head coaches who were former high school and Furman teammates, and long-time Paladin assistant coaches. Commerce, Ga., natives Clay Hendrix and Bobby Lamb, college roomates who starred as players at Furman from 1982-85 and were part of three Southern Conference championship teams, later served as assistant coaches under Paladin head coaches Jimmy Satterfield (1988-93) and Bobby Johnson (1994-01) before Lamb assumed the program’s reins in 2002. Hendrix remained on Lamb’s staff through the 2006 campaign before departing for the Air Force Academy (2007-16). He was named Furman’s head coach on Dec. 19, 2016. u CLOSE ENCOUNTERS...Furman and Samford’s four most recent meetings (2-2) as SoCon members have been decided by a total of 22 points. u PALADIN POINTERS...Redshirt freshman bandit Adrian Hope leads the SoCon and ranks third in the FCS in sacks (12.5). Hope registered six tackles and a pair of sacks in Furman’s 49-13 win over VMI. His 12.5 sacks are a Paladin freshman record. Sophomore tailback Devin Wynn rushed for a career high 112 yards and three touchdowns against VMI, becoming the first Paladin 100-yard rusher this season and first since Antonio Wilcox ran for 106 yards in a 56-20 win over The Citadel in 2017. Wynn has rushed for 514 yards, five touchdowns, and averaged 7.8 yards per carry over the last six games. Sophomore placekicker/punter Grayson Atkins has made 10 consecutive field goal attempts , including four from 50+ yards, and was named SoCon Special Teams Player of the Week three weeks in a row (vs. Samford, The Citadel, Chattanooga). Furman’s 49 points and 590 yards in total offense against VMI marked season highs, as did the Paladins’ 11-of-14 conversions on third down. Furman has scored (17 TDs, 5 FGs) on 22 of its last 24 advances into the red zone (.916), with the last incursion ending at the VMI 18 as game time expired. u SOCON’S TOUGHEST SCHEDULE...Furman has faced the toughest schedule to date among SoCon schools as reflected in opponent won-loss records (59-38) and winning percentage (.608). The Paladins are the only league school to have faced an FBS Top 20 team (No. 2 Clemson) so far, and six of Furman’s 10 scheduled opponents currently sport winning records — best among league schools. The Paladins’ 34-14 victory over Wofford (4/6) on Oct. 13 is the highest ranked FCS foe beaten by a league team this year. Furman is also the only SoCon team that can boast two ranked FCS foes on its 2018 out-of-conference schedule: Elon (12/14) and Colgate (6/8). uLAST FURMAN-MERCER MEETING (Oct. 21, 2017)...Antonio Wilcox rushed for three touchdowns and Joe Farrar intercepted a Mercer pass in the end zone as time expired to give Furman its fifth straight victory, a 28-21 Southern Conference win over Mercer at Paladin Stadium. The Paladins erased a 21-14 third-quarter deficit, tying it on quarterback P.J. Blazejowski’s 18-yard touchdown pass to Andy Schumpert with 40 seconds remaining in the period, and taking the lead for good on Wilcox’s third touchdown of the game — a four-yard scoring run with 4:48 remaining in the contest. Furman overcame a 7-0 deficit with a pair of second quarter Wilcox scoring runs to forge a 14-7 lead into halftime. Mercer took advantage of a Furman fumble on the Paladins’ first offensive play of the third quarter, getting an Eric Jackson recovery at the Furman 30 to set up a 1-yard touchdown plunge by CJ Leggett that tied the game at 14-14. The Bears went up 21-14 lead on their next possession, covering 74 yards in nine plays for a 25-yard touchdown strike from Kaelan Riley to Marquise Irvin. Furman answered on the ensuing possession when Blazejowski lofted an 18-yard touchdown pass down the middle of the field to Schumpert, who slipped behind the Bear linebackers into the end zone. The Paladins completed the second half comeback with a 14-play, 70-yard drive that consumed seven minutes of clock and featured a pair of third down conversions, as well as a fourth-and-one play at the Mercer 5. Wilcox secured the first down with a 1-yard gain to the Mercer 4, and on the next play the senior running back slanted off right tackle to the goal line for the go-ahead score. After an exchange of possessions, Mercer moved from their own 15 to the Furman 26, but on third and eight, Riley’s pass into the front corner of the end zone was picked off by Farrar with three seconds remaining. Wilcox paced Furman’s ground attack, running 17 times for 63 yards and three touchdowns. Blazejowski, meanwhile, completed 16-of-19 passes for 158 yards and a touchdown. Riley connected on 26-of-34 passes for 289 yards and a touchdown to lead Mercer.

uTHREE IN A ROW...Furman sophomore placekicker/punter Grayson Atkins landed his third consecutive Southern Conference Special Teams Player of the Week scroll for his performance in the Paladins’ 16-10 win over Chattanooga on Nov. 3. The outing against the Mocs included field goals from 50, 48, and 28 yards, a 43.0 punting average, and four kickoffs — three of which went out of the end zone while the fourth was fair caught at the 1-yard line. Atkins’ three field goals against UTC extended his streak of made field goals to 10, just two shy of the Furman record held by Danny Marshall (2001). Four of his 10 field goals have come from 50+ yards, with an average distance of 38.6 yards on the 10 makes. Counting his work against VMI, the Paladin sophomore is also averaging 43.2 yards per punt this season, and 25 of his 48 kickoffs have gone out of the end zone — best in the SoCon. As a freshman in 2017 he led the SoCon in kick scoring with 82 points (9x13 FGs, 55x55 PATs) en route to earning SoCon All-Freshman Team honors. He is the first specialist in program history to win three consecutive league player of the week scrolls and first SoCon specialist to accomplish the rare triple since 2015. His latest honor followed stellar work in Furman’s 28-17 win over The Citadel on Oct. 27 that saw him average 50.9 yards on seven punts, one of which went for 81 yards — the third longest in program history. The Inman, S.C., product began his torrid stretch against Samford on Oct. 20 by converting field goals from 27, 50, 51, and 53 yards while also averaging 45.8 yards on six punts — a worksheet that netted him STATS FCS National Special Teams Player Of The Week. His 53-yard field goal tied an NCAA Division I record

uTRACKING ADRIAN HOPE...One of several bright spots emerging this season has been the play of redshirt freshman bandit Adrian Hope, who currently tops the SoCon and ranks third in the FCS in sacks (10.5, 1.38 per game). In Saturday’s 49-13 win over VMI, Hope registered a team leading six tackles, two sacks, and a forced fumble. The play versus the Keydet followed a five-tackle performance that included 2.5 sacks in a 16-10 win over Chattanooga on Nov. 3; and three weeks ago it was Hope’s sack and caused fumble with two minutes remaining in the game at The Citadel that led to the fumble recovery return for a touchdown by Donavan Perryman that put the game’s decision on ice. Over the last four games he’s accounted for 16 tackles, 6.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles As a prep at Vanguard High School in Ocala, Fla., Hope displayed his pass rushing skills, totaling an astounding 56 sacks in his career while twice earning Florida 6-A All-State honors.

uQUARTERBACK CAROUSEL...Furman’s quarterback carousel took another turn two weeks agao when redshirt senior Harris Roberts returned the lineup against Chattanooga after sitting out The Citadel game due to a concussion stained in the first quarter versus Samford on Oct. 20. Roberts took over for JeMar Lincoln, who passed for 140 yards while rushing for three touchdowns in Roberts’ absence in the Paladins’ 28-17 win over The Citadel on Oct. 27. All told, three different Paladin signal callers have logged starts this year, including true freshman quarterback Darren Grainger, who started the Elon game and has seen duty in four contests. Another true freshman, Hamp Sisson, made his career debut for a series against The Citadel.u15 FIRST-TIME STARTERS...Fifteen Paladins have made their career starting debuts this season, with redshirt sophomore Caleb Auer the latest to join the group on Saturday against VMI. The Buford, Ga., native got the starting nod at right tackle for the injured Andy Godwin and graded out 88 percent on 57 plays. Auer has 374 career play participations.

uHIGHEST RANKED FOE TO FALL SINCE 2011...The 34-14 win over No. 4 Wofford on Oct. 13 marked Furman's highest ranked victim since the Paladins knocked off No. 3 Appalachian State in 2011 in Greenville.

uROBERTS NAMED SOCON PLAYER OF THE WEEK...Redshirt senior Harris Roberts recorded the finest performance against Wofford on Oct. 13, completing 16-of-19 passes for 235 yards and three touchdowns and rushing for 32 yards and two scores in the 34-14 victory. He accounted for all five Paladin touchdown responsibilities against the Terriers. Roberts, who missed over two weeks of preseason practice due to a fractured thumb on his throwing hand, earned the first start of his career against Clemson on Sept. 2 but played only one series before giving way to redshirt freshman JeMar Lincoln. He did not play the following week against Elon, with true freshman quarterback Darren Grainger getting the start versus the Phoenix.uA FIRST FOR COLLEGE FOOTBALL?...Furman redshirt senior quarterback Harris Roberts made college football history when he started for the Paladins’ in the 2018 season opener versus Clemson. That’s because Roberts, now a full-time student at Clemson, where he is part of the NCAA’s Cooperative Educational Exchange program that, in Furman’s case, allows a student seeking a full engineering degree (not offered by Furman) to complete their final two years of classwork at another school, played a game against the school he now attends — a first, we believe, in college football history. In Roberts’ case, once his engineering curriculum at Clemson is complete, he will receive undergraduate degrees from both institutions — a B.S. in pre-engineering from Furman and B.S. from Clemson in mechanical engineering. The Cumming, Ga., product has been enrolled at Clemson since the fall of 2017 and is on schedule to finish his Clemson degree requirements next spring. He is the sixth Furman football player to go through the “3-and-2” program (as it is more commonly known at Furman), which also currently includes his former teammate, punter/placeckicker Jon Croft Hollingsworth, a four-year letterman who completed his football eligibility after averaging 42.1 yards per punt in 2017. Roberts sports a 3.66 overall GPA and is a four-time member of the SoCon Academic Honor Roll.uPAST FURMAN “3-AND-2” FOOTBALL PLAYERS ...include Tim Stepp, DE (1984-87/Georgia Tech), Jeremy Osborne, DB (1994-97/Clemson), Chris Lowery, DB (1999-02/Clemson), Antonio Frazier, OT (2008-10/Clemson), and Jon Croft Hollingsworth, PK/P (2014-17/Clemson).uDIRKS JOINS THE 1,000-YARD CLUB...Redshirt senior running back Kealand Dirks topped the 1,000-yard plateau for his career (currently 1,187 yards) with his 14-carry, 72-yard performance versus Elon on Sept. 8. A year ago he ran for 720 yards and nine touchdowns on the way to collecting second team All-SoCon honors.uTHE BELL TOLLS...Freshman wide receiver/return specialist Dejuan Bell fashioned quite a performance in the Paladins’ 44-38 victory over Western Carolina on Sept. 29, returning a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown and also collecting a 45-yard TD reception. Bell, who finished the game with 208 all-purpose yards, was named SoCon Special Teams Player of the Week. The 97 yard kickoff return was the eighth longest in Furman history and first traditional kickoff return for a touchdown by a Paladin since 2012 when Jerodis Williams ran one back 100 yards versus Appalachian State. Logan McCarter had a 47-yard return for a score on a onside kickoff by ETSU in 2017.

uAMIR TRAPP VERSUS HIS FORMER TEAMMATES...Furman’s starting lineup against Clemson featured junior cornerback Amir Trapp, the former Tiger who joined the Paladin program in January following three years at Clemson. Trapp, a former all-state and Shrine Bowl performer as a cornerback and return specialist at Daniel (S.C.) High School, saw action for the Tigers in both 2016 and ‘17, including 10 contests in 2017 before transferring to Furman. His father, James Trapp, was a standout defensive back at Clemson (1989-92) who went on to play 11 years in the NFL and win a Super Bowl Championship ring with the Baltimore Ravens at the end of the 2000 season. In addition he also won a gold medal in the 4x100 at the 1992 Olympics.uTWO-SPORT ALL-SOCON PERFORMER...Redshirt senior nose guard Jaylan Reid, a consensus second team All-SoCon pick in 2017 and owner of 31 starts in his career, captured the shot put title

at the 2017 SoCon Championships with a toss of 16.49m, which he followed up with a third place finish in the event this past spring (16.08m). Reid also finished second in the shot put at the 2016 league championships (16.28m).uGOOD DNA: JeMar Lincoln, Furman’s redshirt freshman quarterback from Waycross, Ga., is the nephew of former Pittsburgh Steeler defensive back Mel Blount, who played on four Super Bowl Championship teams and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1989u PALADIN LEGACY: Furman redshirt senior running back Ridge Gibson, who scored four touchdowns in 2017, is the son of Ernest Gisbon, a member of three Furman SoCon title teams (1980-82), an All-America defensive back, and an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship honoree who played six years in the NFL, primarily with the Patriots, where he played in the 1986 Super Bowl.u30TH ANNIVERSARY OF 1988 NCAA I-AA (FCS) NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP...As part of Saturday’s game versus Chattanooga, Furman will honor the 30th anniversary of Furman’s 1988 NCAA I-AA (FCS) National Championship. The first SoCon school and first private school to win an FCS national crown, Furman went 13-2 that season under head coach Jimmy Satterfield, completing the championship run with a 17-12 title game triumph over Georgia Southern in Pocatello, Idaho. Paced by All-America linebacker Jeff Blankenship, the Paladins sported the nation’s top scoring defense (9.5 ppg) in 1988, registering four shutouts and limiting five other foes to single digit points. Future Paladin head coaches who were part of the 1988 squad included Bobby Johnson (defensive coordinator), Bobby Lamb (defensive ends coach), Bruce Fowler (wide receivers coach), and Clay Hendrix (offensive line coach).uHIS MIDDLE NAME IS “WINNER”: When head coach Clay Hendrix lured former Paladin wide receiver George Quarles ‘89 back to Furman a year ago, he gained the services of one of the country’s most successful high school mentors. In fact, Quarles, who posted a 250-16 (.939) coaching record and won 11 state championships in 18 seasons at Maryville (Tenn.) High School, went 10-7 in his first 17 games at Maryville but then reeled off a 240-9 mark (.964) thereafter, including a 74-game winning streak. The most successful head coach (by winning percentage) in America from 2007-16, Quarles, a Jefferson City, Tenn., native, who took over offensive coordinator and quarterback coaching duties in January, was inducted into both the Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame and Tennessee Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2017.uPROUD OF THIS GUY: Brian Bratton ‘05, one of Furman’s all-time great receivers and kickoff return specialists, is in his fourth year on the coaching staff at his alma mater. Before joining the coaching ranks, he played six seasons in the Canadian Football League , where he was a member of two Grey Cup Championship squads with the Montreal Alouettes. The recipient of the CFL’s 2012 Tom Pate Award, which is similar to the NFL’s Walter Payton “Man of The Year” Award, Bratton, a 2011 Furman Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, earned SoCon Freshman of the Year and All-America accolades in 2001 after averaging a nation best 37.2 yards on kickoff returns, three of which went for scores. He caught 131 passes for 1,826 yards, and 18 TDs in his career, helping the Paladins to a

pair of SoCon titles (2001 & ‘04), three playoff appearances, and FCS national runner-up finish.uFURMAN ATHLETICS DIRECTOR MIKE BUDDIE...On Aug. 16-17, 2018, Furman athletics director Mike Buddie returned to New York and Yankee Stadium to celebrate with his former teammates the 20th anniversary of the Yankees’ 1998 World Series championship. Buddie, who starred at Wake Forest and was a fourth-round MLB Draft pick in 1992, played for parts of five seasons with the Yankees and Brewers. Now in his fourth year at Furman, he began a four-year term as a member of the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee in September of 2017. He previously served a one-year stint (2015) on the committee as associate athletics director at Wake Forest.uFURMAN FUTURE FBS GAMES: Furman has several future games scheduled against FBS foes:

uFURMAN IN THE NFL: Furman currently has one player in the NFL. Offensive guard Dakota Dozier ‘13 from Cayce, S.C., is in his fifth season with the New York Jets, who selected him in the fourth round of the 2014 draft He was a four-year starter (2010-13) at offensive tackle for Furman and two-time All-America selection, earning consensus honors as a senior after taking home the SoCon Jacobs Blocking Award.uJUST TO CLARIFY...It’s “Pala-dins”, NOT “Pah-ladins”, “Pah-ladians”, or “Purple” Paladins, just as South Carolina isn’t called the “Garnet” Gamecocks or Clemson the “Orange” Tigers.uWHAT’S A PALADIN?...A “Paladin” is a knight on a horse, a paragon of chivalry; a heroic champion; a strong supporter or defender of a cause; and any of the 12 peers of French emperor Charlemagne’s court. While history reveals knights were not always mounted men-at-arms, the modern image of a knight, mounted an in full armor, has undoubtedly influenced the concept of Furman’s mascot.uWE’VE BEEN PLAYING THIS SPORT A LONG TIME...2018 marks the 113th season of football at Furman, which has played 1,124 games (607-479-38) in its history (began in 1889). The Paladins’ 28-6 win over Western Carolina on Oct. 28, 2017, represented the program’s 600th win — tops among all current SoCon schools.

Introduced as Furman’s new head football coach by director of athletics Mike Buddie on December 19, 2016, Clay Hendrix in one season has already helped reinvigo-rate a Paladin football program long accustomed to suc-cess. Hendrix, a former standout Paladin offensive guard and assistant coach who returned to his alma mater following a decade as an assistant coach at the United States Air Force Academy, directed Furman to an 8-5 campaign and Football Championship (FCS) playoff ap-pearance in 2017, improving on a three-win 2016 season and defying a preseason No. 7 Southern Conference tab by playing for a share of league title in the regular sea-son finale en route to finishing a consensus No. 20 in two major FCS polls. That Hendrix was able to orchestrate an impressive rebound of Paladin football was just what Buddie envi-sioned when he named him the 23rd head coach in the history of Furman football, which dates from 1889. Following a pair of narrow, heartbreaking losses in its first three games a year ago, Furman reeled off seven straight wins — the program’s longest run of success streak since 1999 — en route its first appearance in the polls since 2014. The winning streak helped the Paladins garner their first playoff berth and postseason victory since 2013, and was recognized for its significance by Hendrix landing consensus SoCon Coach of the Year hon-ors in voting by his peers and media. Fueling Furman’s resurgence was a staple of former Paladin greatness and hallmark of Hendrix’s coaching DNA — a balanced, high powered offense (32.6 ppg) driven by an effective running game and efficient pass-ing attack (168.54 rating). Also playing a key role was a young, aggressive Paladin defense that led the league in sacks (34). All told, 13 Paladins earned All-SoCon honors in 2017, highlighted by All-America center Matthew

Schmidt, who extended Furman’s unmatched tradition of producing Jacobs Blocking Award winners by becom-ing the school’s 13th recipient (and seventh Hendrix pu-pil) to capture the prestigious honor. Furman’s successful 2017 campaign extended Hen-drix’s legacy of notable success and consistency, under-scored in the fact that in 36 years of collegiate football, spanning his years as a player and as an assistant coach, he has been part of 30 winning teams that have com-bined to go 290-156-3 (.649). In 10 years at the Air Force Academy, where he coached the offensive line and served as offensive coor-dinator for five seasons, as well as associate head coach over the last seven campaigns, Hendrix played a pivotal role in the Falcons producing some of the top rushing at-tacks in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). That pro-ductivity translated into a 77-53 record (.592), nine bowl game appearances, and four Commander-in-Chief’s Trophies, which is awarded annually based on head-to-head results among the three service academies. Air Force led the Mountain West Conference (MWC) in rushing and ranked in the top 10 nationally eight times in the last 10 years due, in part, to the quality work of Hendrix-directed offensive lines. All told 19 Falcon of-fensive linemen garnered all-conference recognition and 21 players under Hendrix’s guidance landed Academic All-MWC honors during his tenure in Colorado Springs. In 2016 Air Force posted a 10-3 record and 5-3 mark in the MWC, won its fourth Commander-in-Chief’s Tro-phy this decade, and defeated South Alabama in the Ari-zona Bowl following a 27-20 win over 19th-ranked Boise State on Nov. 25. The Falcons ranked third nationally in rushing offense (322.8 ypg), seventh in FBS in third

down conversion percentage (51.4), and averaged over 451.4 yards per game in total offense along with 34.3 points per game. The victory over Boise State represented the latest in an impressive list of Air Force triumphs with Hendrix on staff. In 2014 the Falcons defeated 21st-ranked Colorado State (27-24) during the regular season and knocked off Western Michigan (38-24) in the Idaho Potato Bowl to complete a 10-3 campaign. In 2010 Air Force downed Georgia Tech (14-7) in the Independence Bowl, a year after beating 25th-ranked Houston (45-20) in the Armed Forces Bowl. In his first season there, the Falcons handed Notre Dame its biggest setback (41-24) to a service acad-emy since 1963. Hendrix paved his way to Air Force with an exem-plary 19-year record of accomplishment as an assistant coach at Furman, where he served as offensive line coach each year, recruiting coordinator for three seasons, and assistant head coach over his final five campaigns. From 1988-2006 he helped the Paladins post a 155-77-1 re-cord (.667), including a 100-45 Southern Conference mark (.690) that led to six league championships, 11 NCAA FCS (formerly I-AA) playoff appearances, a national runner-up finish in 2001, and 1988 national champion-ship — the first by a SoCon member school and private university in FCS history. Over his final eight seasons on the Paladin staff (1999-06), Furman registered a 73-28 record (.723) and 47-14 worksheet (.770) against SoCon competition en route to three league championships, seven FCS playoff berths, 2001 national runner-up campaign, and seven top 10 final national rankings. ing attacks were central in one of the greatest eras in Furman history. In 1999 Furman knocked off North Caro-lina (28-3) on the strength of a 177-yard rushing perfor-mance by tailback Louis Ivory, and in 2000 averaged a school record 307.1 yards per game rushing to spearhead Ivory’s run to the Walter Payton Award, the FCS equiva-lent to the Heisman Trophy. The next year a Paladin line featuring three All-Americans keyed an 12-3 campaign, highlighted by a 24-17 playoff semifinal road win over Georgia Southern that halted the Eagles’ NCAA record 39-game home winning streak. In 2005 a potent Paladin ground game was central to Furman scoring 64 touchdowns and averaging 470.0 yards per game — both school standards. In recognition terms, 25 Hendrix-coached players earned first team all-conference honors and 13 garnered All-America laurels during his Paladin assistant coaching tenure. In addition, five products — center Steve Dug-gan (1990), guard Ben Hall (1999), tackle Josh Moore (2000), tackle Donnie Littlejohn (2001), and tackle Ben Bainbridge (2004) — captured the SoCon’s Jacobs Blocking Award. A sixth recipient, tackle Joel Bell, who was recruited and developed by Hendrix, garnered the award in 2008. Three of Furman’s SoCon leading 15 Academic All-Americans — guards Eric Walter (1990 & ‘91) and Adi Filipovic (2006) — are Hendrix products. A native of Commerce, Ga., where he was a three-sport standout in football, wrestling, and golf as a prep, he starred as an offensive guard on the gridiron, helping Commerce High School to a 13-1 record and 1981 Class 2A state championship. He came to Furman in 1982 on a football scholar-ship under head coach Dick Sheridan and over the next four years, including three seasons as a starter under the tutelage of offensive line coach Robbie Caldwell, played a role in the Paladins posting a 39-10-1 record, winning SoCon championships in 1982, ‘83, and ‘85, and finishing as national runner-up his senior year — a season that saw him earn all-state recognition. Furman also record-ed impressive wins over South Carolina (1982), Georgia Tech (1983), and North Carolina State (1984 & ‘85) dur-ing his playing tenure. Following graduation in 1986, he joined Sheridan’s staff at N.C. State for the 1986 and ‘87 seasons — the first of which featured a Peach Bowl appearance. The Wolfpack beat ACC regular season champion Clemson in 1986 and the seventh-ranked Tigers again the following year. He returned to Furman in 1988 as offensive line coach under head coach Jimmy Satterfield and his influ-ence quickly led to success as Furman registered a 13-2 record and claimed the NCAA FCS championship with a 17-12 triumph over Georgia Southern. He and his wife, LeeAnn Hedgpeth ‘90 of Taylors, S.C., have two sons, Cal and Mac.

As a player, assistant coach, and now head coach, Clay Hendrix has played a key role in 30 winning campaigns over his 36 seasons of collegiate football.

F urman’s Paladin Stadium, nestled beautifully on one of the nation’s most beautiful campuses and boasting a scenic view of Paris Mountain, is the football home of the Paladins,

having opened in 1981 to replace Sirrine Stadium, which served as the site of Furman football for 45 years. During the 2013-14 school year the school completed construc-tion of the Pearce-Horton Football Complex, a 44,000-square foot, four-story facility that serves as the new operational home for Furman football and includes a locker room for 105 players, coaches’ offices, meeting rooms, sports medicine center, and “Mauldin Hall” that highlights the program’s championship history. The new building also features a club level and press box. Design was by McMillan, Pazdan, and Smith of Greenville, and Triangle Construction, also of Greenville, served as builder. In addition to the construction of Pearce-Horton, another significant improvement for Paladin Stadium included the 2013 installation of a new ShawSports “Thunderbolt” playing surface, which replaced the original natural grass field. Fan game day enhancements include the addition of padded chair back seating, improved lighting, and a new pubic address system. Paladin Stadium is the third home of Furman football since 1919. Manly Field, completed in that year, served as the home of Furman football until 1936, when Furman moved the site of its football contests to then-newly constructed Sirrine Stadium. The first game played in Sirrine Stadium — a 14-13 Furman win over Davidson — was the sixth game of the year for Furman during the 1936 season. In 1980, Furman closed its association with Sirrine Stadium with a 28-15 victory over arch-rival The Citadel to win its first outright Southern Conference football championship. Furman opened Paladin Stadium in the same fashion it did Manly and Sirrine, winning the first game played within its confines. The Paladins defeated East Tennessee State, 21-0, in the stadium’s inaugural and have gone on to record a 168-59-1 home record (.739), claiming 11 Southern Conference champion-

ships and the 1988 NCAA I-AA (FCS) national title along the way, including last year’s SoCon crown. In 1985 the stadium’s field was named Eugene Stone Field in honor of Stone, who was directly responsible for the additional seats added to the stadium prior to the 1985 season that increased

the capacity to its current 16,000. In 2009 the school added a digital 13x32 video board and scoreboard. From initial grading to completion, Paladin Stadium took two years to be realized at a cost of approximately $2 million.
