CONCUSSION TRAINING COURSE

With the ever growing information on concussions and the damage they inflict, Akron Soccer mandates that each coach / asst. coach takes the concussion training course.

This educates the coaches on the signs / symptons and action steps necessary to perform in the event a concussion occurs.

We at Akron Soccer take the safety of your child to the highest regard and ensure that steps are taken to effective be aware of the signs of an injury.

Parents are encourged to view the online concussion course to apprise them of this ever growing focus with youth sports.

Lightning Risk Reduction Outdoors When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!

There is little you can do to substantially reduce your risk if you are outside in a thunderstorm. The only completely safe action is to get inside a safe building or vehicle.

Lightning Risk Reduction When a Safe Location is nearby

You are not safe anywhere outside. Run to a safe building or vehicle when you first hear thunder, see lightning or observe dark threatening clouds developing overhead. Stay inside until 30 minutes after you hear the last clap of thunder. Do not shelter under trees.

Plan Ahead!

Your best source of up-to-date weather information is a NOAA Weather Radio (NWR). Portable weather radios are handy for outdoor activities. If you don't have NWR, stay up to date via internet, smart phone, radio or TV. If you're in a group, make sure the group has a lightning safety plan and are ready to use it. If you're in a large group, you'll need extra time to get everyone to a safe place. NWS recommends having proven professional lightning detection equipment that will alert your group when lightning is nearing the event site

Outdoor Sports Team  Your soccer team has an afternoon game at the local recreational park. The weather forecast calls for partly cloudy skies, with a chance of thunderstorms by early evening. When you arrive at the park, you notice the only safe buildings are the restrooms. Shortly after sunset, the sky gets cloudy and you see bright flashes in the sky. What should you do? Get everyone into vehicles or the restrooms. Do NOT stay on the field; they are not safe during lightning activity. Once in a safe place, wait 30 minutes after the last rumble of thunder before resuming play.

When a Safe Location is not nearby

Remember, there is NO safe place outside in a thunderstorm. If you absolutely can't get to safety, this section may help you slightly lessen the threat of being struck by lightning while outside. Don't kid yourself--you are NOT safe outside.

Know the weather patterns of the area you plan to visit. For example, in mountainous areas, thunderstorms typically develop in the early afternoon, so plan to hike early in the day and be down the mountain by noon. Listen to the weather forecast for the outdoor area you plan to visit. The forecast may be very different from the one near your home. If there is a high chance of thunderstorms, stay inside. These actions may slightly reduce your risk of being struck by lightning:

• Avoid open fields, the top of a hill or a ridge top. • Stay away from tall, isolated trees or other tall objects. If you are in a forest, stay near a lower stand of trees. • If you are camping in an open area, set up camp in a valley, ravine or other low area. Remember, a tent offers NO

protection from lighting. • Stay away from water, wet items (such as ropes) and metal objects (such as fences and poles). Water and metal are

excellent conductors of electricity. The current from a lightning flash will easily travel for long distances (See Figure 2 below).

Exercised Induced Asthma

Up to 80% of kids with asthma have symptoms when they exercise. It makes sense that cigarette smoke and

pollen could trigger asthma symptoms, but why exercise?

Cold, dry air that's inhaled during exercise is believed to be the main cause of these symptoms. When kids

exercise or play strenuously, they tend to breathe quickly, shallowly, and through the mouth. So the air reaching

their lungs misses the warming and humidifying effects that happen when they breathe more slowly through the

nose.

The cool, dry air causes the airways in the lungs to become narrower, which blocks the flow of air and makes it

harder to breathe. This narrowing, called bronchoconstriction, occurs in up to 20% of people who don't have

asthma, which is why it's sometimes referred to as "exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB)" rather than

"exercise-induced asthma (EIA)."

Symptoms Symptoms of exercise-induced asthma include wheezing, tightness or pain in the chest, coughing, and in some cases, prolonged shortness of breath. Some symptoms are more noticeable than others, which means exercise-induced asthma can sometimes go undiagnosed.

Someone may have exercise-induced asthma if he or she:

gets winded or tired easily during or after exercise

coughs after coming inside from being active outdoors

can't run for more than a few minutes without stopping

Kids with exercise-induced asthma often begin having symptoms 5 to 10 minutes after starting to exercise.

Symptoms usually peak 5 to 10 minutes after stopping the activity and may take an hour or longer to end. Some

people with EIA even have symptoms for hours after exercise. Although symptoms often appear while kids are

active, sometimes they can appear only after the activity has stopped.

Of course, there's a difference between someone with exercise-induced asthma and someone who's out of shape

and is simply winded. Out-of-shape people can catch their breath within minutes, whereas it takes much longer

for someone with EIA to recover. And extremes of temperature, especially cold weather, can make it even worse.

If you believe your child may have exercise induced asthma, please talk to your family physician.

Page 11: Akron Area Soccer League - HomeTeamsONLINEmedia.hometeamsonline.com/photos/soccer/AECYS-SOCCER/...The weather forecast calls for partly cloudy skies, with a chance of thunderstorms

Tips for Kids With Exercise-Induced Asthma

For the most part, kids with exercise-induced asthma can do anything their peers can do. But be sure to follow the

suggestions given by your child's doctor.

Here are some of the tips often recommended:

Warm up before exercise to prevent chest tightening. (Warm-up exercises can include 5 to 10 minutes

of walking or any other light activity, in addition to stretching or flexibility exercises.)

Take rescue medication as close to the start of exercise as possible.

Breathe through the nose during exercise.

Take brief rests during exercise and use rescue medication, as prescribed, if symptoms start.

Cool down after exercise to help slow the change of air temperature in the lungs.

In addition, someone experiencing symptoms shouldn't start exercising until the symptoms stop.

It's also wise for kids with EIA to avoid exercising outside during very cold weather. If your child will be playing

outside when it's cold, wearing a ski mask or a scarf over the mouth and nose should help.

If air pollution or pollen also trigger asthma symptoms, your child may want to exercise indoors when air quality is

poor or pollen counts are high. And exercise should be avoided during any upper respiratory infection.

You can help by ensuring your child takes all medicine prescribed by the doctor, even on days when he or she

feels fine. Skipping controller medication can make symptoms worse and forgetting to take rescue medication

before exercise can lead to severe flare-ups and even emergency department visits.

Kids should always have access to their rescue medication. Keep extras on hand and be sure to regularly check all

supplies so your child isn't carrying around an empty inhaler

AASL Board Member Creed & Code of Conduct I as your youth soccer board member support and will enact the following code of conduct to serve as a representative and role model. I also believe and support the organization’s mission statement that players and parents come first and foremost without any exceptions. They are the cornerstone of the organization.

Preamble

The essential elements of character-building and ethics in sports are embodied in the concept of sportsmanship and five core principles:

• Trustworthiness • Respect • Responsibility • Fairness • Caring

The highest potential of sports is achieved when competition reflects these five pillars of character.

I Therefore Promise to the following:

1. None of us arrives at any administrative level. We are elected to our positions because enough people have confidence in us, appreciation for what we have done in the past and assurance that we could lead in a positive, productive future. This responsibility of accepting such a challenge, especially in a volunteer capacity, must have some guidelines.

2. It is important to remember that as board and committee members we are very high profile in our youth soccer organization. It is equally important that we remember that we are a service organization and that we treat players, parents, coaches and fellow volunteers as partners with a common goal and the organizational development and promotion of youth soccer.

3. We should maintain high standards and serve by example. We serve the players, parents and community, not ourselves. All decisions must be undertaken with the interest of the players and parents first and foremost in every decision we consider and make within our organization.

4. Have respect for the players, parents, coaches, community, officials, game member association, volunteers and fellow board / committee members and deal with them in a patient, courteous and consistent manner.

5. Develop and provide total and full support to coaches by providing them with the utmost training and clinics to teach the skills, sportsmanship and love of soccer to our players.

6. Provide yearly evaluations to parents and coaches on the productivity and effectiveness of the board and committees. Provide seasonal evaluations by the parents on productivity and effectiveness of our coaches.

7. Criticism channeled through the proper quarter should be educational, constructive, balanced and positive. Under no circumstances should it be demeaning or detrimental to self-respect of the individuals involved.

Page 13: Akron Area Soccer League - HomeTeamsONLINEmedia.hometeamsonline.com/photos/soccer/AECYS-SOCCER/...The weather forecast calls for partly cloudy skies, with a chance of thunderstorms

8. Administrators should be informed and available. As facilitators they should know the right questions, have the ability to elicit the right answers and foster creativity with accountability within their committee, position or area.

9. Regarding committee persons and other volunteers; they should be praised for their time spent and jobs well done. Their suggestions welcomed, evaluated and conclusions communicated to them. Abilities should be recognized and encouraged.

10. Open door policy to all our members and coaches with their confidence kept at the highest level.

11. Communicate at all levels to our players, parents, coaches and community at all times

12. All club documents including but not limited to Constitution, By-Laws, Financials, Meeting Agenda's, Meeting Minutes available to our members and community at all times. These documents will be placed on our clubs website and available by request.

13. Above all, courtesy, self control and loyalty. We are role models for the youngest players to the newest

association. Our responsibility is to serve them as well as work toward our common goals.

Youth Soccer Players Code of Conduct (U8 & Above)

As a player within the Akron Area Soccer League, I pledge to follow the youth soccer player’s creed and code of conduct as outlined below:

I therefore promise to the following:  1. HAVE FUN:  It is a simple concept.  Win or lose, try to

enjoy every moment on the field.  If playing isn’t fun, then something is wrong.

2. REMEMBER THE GOLDEN RULE: This is the most important rule you’ll ever learn in sports!  Always treat your teammates, coaches, opponents and officials in the same manner that you would like to be treated.  That means respect, dignity, and total sportsmanship at all times.

3. LISTEN TO YOUR COACH: You may think your coach is the best, the worst or somewhere in between.  It makes no difference.  If you’re on the team, your job is to listen attentively to what your coach is saying.  Coaches volunteer their own time to work with you and your team.  Don’t waste their time.

4. BE A GOOD SPORT: Play fair.  Be a leader.  Set the example.  Rise above poor behavior.  Have fun.  The way in which you conduct yourself has a long lasting effect on everybody around you.  That’s what practicing good sportsmanship is all about.

5. LEARN THE RULES:  When was the last time you sat down and actually read the rulebook?  It’s hard to say you “Know” the game if you really don’t know the rules for the game.  Learn the rules for your age group; it will benefit you a lot.

6. BE PATIENT WITH YOUR TEAMMATES:  Every player on your team has certain strengths and weaknesses.  Be patient with your teammates as they improve their game‐just as they will be patient with you improving your game.  Soccer is a team sport.  Success can only come when the entire team works and plays together.

7. PRACTICE THE FUNDEMENTALS: Master the soccer basics.  Practice your dribbling, shooting, passing and defense over and over again

8. PLAY HARD: Hustle never goes out of style.  Coaches absolutely love players who try a little harder.  If playing hard isn’t part of your game, make it!

9. NEVER QUESTION AN OFFICIAL: Officials do not care who winds and they have no favorite players.  All they want is for a fair and safe game to be played.  And that’s no easy job.  Make it easier by not talking back or questioning the official.

10. INCLUDE YOUR PARENTS: Your parents only want the best in life for you.  And they always want to see you succeed.  Let them into your soccer world, but remind them that there are always ups and downs and your goal is to have fun.  It will be good for you to have their support and fun for them to see you take responsibility as a member of the team.

11. PRACTICE & GAMES: I will be at practice and games.  If I do not attend scheduled practice or games, I will not be provided equal playing time as those players that do attend practice and games.  I promise to attend any practice and game.  Should I not be able to attend, I will notify my coach when I will be absent so that he or she can make the necessary roster adjustment for a planned practice or game.

12. EFFORT AND HARD WORK: If I do not hustle on the field and choose not to put forth an effort, I understand that I may be pulled from the game and not be given equal playing time.  I promise to hustle and work within the team environment for the benefit of my teammates.

AASL Injury Policy & Procedure • The coaching staff of your child’s team must be notified of any injury that

your child has sustained whether on or off the soccer field.

• Any player whom has endured injury (on or off the field) will require a medical release from a physician or hospital where the player has been seen.

• If a player was not seen by a physician or hospital, a parent release is required

• No Player can participate in practice or games without a medical release or parent release after having endured an injury.

• If a player release shows signs of discomfort or favoring of the injury, the coach has the responsibility to have the player rest and not play to minimize the player’s risk for additional injury.

• Any injury during practice or games, the same procedure must be followed. The coach is required to complete an injury report and submit to the club within 24 hours from the time of injury.

This policy is for the well being and safety of the player. At no time do we want to see a player either sustain an injury or place them in a situation to have an injury progress.
