The explosion took place near the Erawan Shrine, a popular tourist at- traction, and close to shopping malls. While acknowledging the serious na- ture of the explosion, House of Travel commercial director Brent Thomas says its shops have been surprisingly quiet (on the BKK front) with very few inquiries from customers booked to travel to BKK. He says the chains has hundreds of people passing through BKK over the next couple of weeks, and that it too is evaluating the situation for those up there and those about to go, ‘but there’s been no mass cancellations’ he says. . . . It Won’t Stop Kiwis “New Zealanders are resilient and event like this won’t stop people travelling to BKK—the reality is New Zealanders love to travel, and for 15 years where we’ve had these events, and bar 2009 we’ve had growth in travel,” says Thomas. “It may have a short-term booking impact, but no long-term impact on the number of Kiwis travelling to BKK.” Both United Travel and GO Holidays also said they had seen no large scale cancellations in the wake of the explosion. United Travel’s John Willson says the chain is keeping a close eye on the situation and work- ing with its clients on a case by case basis; and GO’s Jason Buckley says while the wholesaler has fielded a few calls from agents, there had been no cancellations by presstime. Tourism Fiji attributes the growth to work done by its team, new flight routes, visitor friendly immigra- tion policies, the Tourist Tax Refund Scheme and improvements to infra- structure. New Caledonia Tour ism has launched a new campaign to high-light that the destination is one of New Zealand’s closest Pacific neighbours. The idea for the Hello Neighbour cam-paign came from a report suggest-ing Kiwis and Aussies are becoming disconnected from their neighbours, says the NTO’s sales and marketing director Caroline Brunel.“After hearing about this long-term trend it made us think, if we don’t know the people living right next door to us, how well do we know the people on the next island?” she says. The first phase of the two-phase cam-paign is being rolled out over the coming weeks in New Zealand and Australia, and will include a series of new videos, a new-look website and outdoor advertising, as well as com-petitions.It’s aimed at independent and active couples aged 25-35 and 55+, looking to discover cultural experiences and soft adventure. Phase one will run until 25 Sep and phase two will start from Nov.The campaign aims to capitalise on

growing interest in New Caledonia from New Zealanders, and convert this interest into bookings. Recent figures showed a 41.3% increase in visitors for the first quarter of the year compared to 2014, says the NTO.See neighbours.new-caledonia.co.nz

Win A Singapore TripGTA and Travelcube are offering agents across Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa the chance to win one of 10 five-day trips to Singapore and tickets to the Formula 1 Grand Prix. There’s also 10 Apple Watches up for grabs in the competition, which aims to showcase Singapore’s lesser known attractions to the trade. To be in to win, agents need to upload a creative 30-second video about the hidden gems to be found in Singapore, away from the usual highlights like Marina Bay or the Merlion. They can focus on out-of-the-ordinary experi-ences, unusual excursions or culinary recommendations, and must include personal insight and recommenda-tions from the agent. The 10 winners will be picked based on the ‘variety and uniqueness’ of their video, and they’ll be flown to Singapore 17-21 Sep to recreate their video over five days. The 10 most ‘liked’ videos will win the watch.See mysingaporehiddengems.com

The number of travellers cruising throughout, as well as in and out of, the Sultanate of Oman, is on the rise and agents are encour-aged to brush up their knowledge on this cruise destination. In particular there has been signifi-cant cruise visitor growth, both to and from, Muscat’s Sultan Qaboos Port this year. According to a report recently published by the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the number of Sultan Qaboos Port cruise passengers rose from 197,786 during May 2014, to 239,964 during May 2015. In light of the report, the Sultanate of Oman Tourism in New Zealand’s account manager Margaret Spiro told Travel Today she is encourag-ing agencies and cruise specialists to complete Oman Tourism’s on-

line training modules. “We have a number of terrific on-line tools available at your fingertips, to help develop your Oman destination and product knowledge in readiness for customer enquiry,” she says. In ad-dition, agents can explore ‘the wide range of activities and shore excur-sions described in the ‘Travel Ideas’ section of the Sultanate’s dedicated Australia/New Zealand website’.Spiro says the Sultanate of Oman is an increasingly popular port of call for international cruise lines visit-ing the Arabian Peninsula, with itin-eraries typically including ports in Musandam at the country’s north-ernmost tip as well as Muscat and Salalah in the south. Due to safety concerns as a result of problems along the Turkey/Syrian border, Fez Travel has can-celled a number of tours, advises GSA Exotic Holidays. Cancelled itineraries include the Eastern Discovery Tour, departing 21 Sep; the Eastern Miracle Tour departing 14 Sep; and all remain-ing 2015 departures of the Mount Nemrut Eastern Explorer Tour. Exotic says that safety of clients and per-sonnel is of paramount importance, and it would prefer to be cautious than take any risk. Clients who have been affected have been contacted through their agents, with the option of choosing an alternative tour.
