One Step At A Time! By Alan Talbott, President
Jaguar’s racing team’s motto for the Long
Beach, CA race on April 17th
. The XKR GT of
Paul Gentilozzi’s Rocksport Racing team
finished 11th
in class and 32nd
overall, but it did
finish. They had a sticking throttle problem on
the grid. They backed off on the throttle some to
compensate and actually ran in the top ten for
awhile but had to pit. But the techs were unable
to come up with a complete fix so they remained
somewhat hampered all race long. Gentilozzi
said, “It was our first checkered flag and we’re
pleased with that, but we have a much higher
expectation. We won’t be satisfied until we
return Jaguar to its proper place in the field - at
the front. We are going to keep working and we
will get there”. They need to get busy cause the
next race is at Laguna Seca May 22nd
and the
race has been lengthened to six hours making it
another big endurance test before LeMans in
June.
Other bits of Jaguar news include their new
warranty program. Dubbed the Jaguar Platinum
Coverage the program includes a 5-year/50,000
warranty, 24/7 roadside assistance and free
maintenance, including wear and tear items.
That’s quite a statement and makes Jaguar a
class leader in the luxury segment. This starts
with a 2011 XJ model year car and will filter
down to their other new models as well.
Speaking of which, the new XJ should be in the
dealers in May ready to sell. Jaguar is hoping
the new car will sell well enough to push global
sales to 75,000 units total for all models together.
Pricing for the 2011 XJ start at $72,500 and top
out at $115,000 for the long wheel based model.
Kim Daly in her article this month has
outlined activities for May, which are again
incredible so I won’t bother to go over them again. But for the record our activities have been
outstanding for the past year, as evidenced by
our visit to Truitt Cathy’s collection. What a
great day, a wonderful host, great weather and a
big crowd of AJS members. If you can make
some of these events I’m sure you will be
pleased. Thanks to Kim for keeping the good
times rolling!
Also noteworthy are our speakers at the
monthly meetings. Just outstanding jobs one and
all. April’s speakers were no different. Joel and
Maryanne Blackford did a great job of weaving
their personal history
as related to their
purchase of their
beloved XK120 in
1957. All the trials,
tribulations, fun and
not so fun times were
related to us as
Maryanne and Joel took turns sharing the high
spots of their life together. Great job! It is
difficult to put into print how wonderful the
member stories are so you’ll just have to make a
meeting to find out. Thanks go as well to Don
Hart and Wil Sommer for arranging the speakers
for our meetings. It has certainly enhanced these
evenings!
Speaking of meetings, we will have a dinner
meeting in May by popular demand. Normally
we skip May as the last Monday is always
Memorial Day but this year we will hold our
dinner meeting on May 24th
instead at Aldo’s in
Sandy Springs. As always please RSVP to
Beverlee Leo at 770-949-6775 or email to
June’s Corner Member News
By June Mindrup, Health & Hospitality Director
We have great news about Carolyn Sikes.
After two back surgeries, she's recuperating at
home and doing great!! Way to go Carolyn.
Fran and Bob McNair are going to Panama
City Beach, Florida on May 19th for a 3-day
State Conference for AT&T Pioneers.
Joel and Maryanne Blackford are leaving to
go to the North Carolina Coast for l0 days
(possibly more) to attend a Minister's
Conference. They just might extend their time
there with some hiking, kayaking, biking and
camping.
Lew George was hospitalized for some tests
relating to his heart when an EKG showed a "left
bundle block". Results revealed everything was
fine - and - normal for his age! Note: Lew
doesn't know this, but I've been hearing that
"normal for my age" for 25 years!!!
Coming up soon, Dick Thyer will have tests
to see what's wrong with his back. We all hope
it's something that can be fixed with a little pink
pill. Dick, please keep us posted. [I think a little blue pill is more appropriate! - Ed.]
Deb Walton's youngest daughter, Lane, will
be getting married September 12th in the
Brooklyn Botanical Gardens in New York City.
Sounds like a super wonderful setting for a
wonderful occasion.
On April 3rd, Jim and Marsha Foley will be
going to Napa Valley, California to bottle his
latest vintage Seamus (pronounced "sa-mus"
which is Gaelic for James). Another bit of trivia
is that we learned "Slainte" is Cheers - in Gaelic.
Congratulations on the new Wine, Jim - and may
it be a super seller!
Sheila Brower is going to Washington D.C.
May 11th through the 16th for a realtor’s
midyear conference. She will be conducting a
forum aimed at getting women involved in their
community and in the political process.
Don and Marlene Hart have returned from
visiting Portland, Oregon where they toured
through Howard Hugh's famous "Spruce
Goose". For proof of their visit they have a
picture of Don sitting in the cockpit of the
Spruce Goose! While there they also toured the
famous ship "Queen Mary".
Robert Reichert was at our meeting after
being hospitalized for triple by-pass heart
surgery at St. Joseph's Hospital. So good to see
you looking so hale and hearty. We also learned
that wife Norma is making improvement after
her surgery.
Wayne Harris played in the Georgia
Racquetball Association's 2010 Southeastern
Regional Singles Championships on April 16th
through l8th. He finished FIRST (Gold Medal)
in the Men's 55-C division. Congratulations
Wayne!!
Mid May, Rock Spann will be hospitalized
for a knee replacement. Everyone please
remember him in your prayers for a speedy
recovery.
Activities Kim Daly, Activities Director
I think all who went to Truett Cathy’s farm
on the 10th
of April would agree he has a very
interesting and diverse automobile collection.
We were all honored to meet Mr. Cathy, and
thoroughly enjoyed his hospitality, including a
Chick-fil-A lunch. We had such a good time, I
think we will book a viewing of the rest of his
collection at Chick-fil-A’s headquarters in the
near future. Be aware, the visit to the
headquarters will need to be during the week.
I’ll keep you posted.
By the time you receive this newsletter, the
Mitty historic races will already have been run at
Road Atlanta. I hope some of you were able to
go see the races and hobnob with other race and
vintage car enthusiasts.
British Motor Car Day will be held at the
very beautiful Berry College on May 15th
. All
the details for attending this event can be found
at: www.atlantabritishmotorcarday.com
Registration opens at 9:00 AM and closes
promptly at noon. As always, pack some food to
share with other club members. This event often
brings in excess of 500 British motor car
enthusiasts together to show and share with
others their beloved autos.
Mark your calendars now for May 22nd
,
when we have two events planned. The morning
brings an invitation from Marvin and Carolyn
Sykes to visit another very fine private car
collection located in Gainesville off of 985. The
owner’s name is Milton Robson, and for those of
you who have not seen this collection before, it
is truly amazing. The collection is definitely
worth the drive to Mr. Robson’s estate. We will
be joining several other car clubs on this outing.
10:00 AM is the time to see the cars. More
information will be sent out via email as the date
approaches.
May 22nd
continued…After seeing the cars in
the morning, you will have a break before our
evening event. We will have our very first
Spring Fling in the form of a low country shrimp
boil at the Duluth home of Vail and Linda Frost.
Their home sits on the banks of the
Chattahoochee River, making it the perfect
setting for our party. As we have no funds set
aside for this activity, here is the deal: You will
need to RSVP to Judy Scarborough by May 18th
at 770-772-9734 or [email protected]. The
cost will be $7.50 per person plus you must bring
an appetizer, salad or dessert to share and a
bottle of wine or some beer if you drink. The
party begins at 6:30 PM at 4603 Gatewood
Circle, Duluth, 30097. The Frost’s phone
number is 678-966-0353. Dress is dressy casual.
I think this will be a super fun event, please join
us!
Looking forward to June, we are planning an
overnight trip to Lavonia. We will head up
Saturday morning, the 19th
, to Lavonia where we
will meet Rachel Morrison. She will lead us to
the Cateechee Golf Club, where we will have
lunch before attending the afternoon
performance of a local folk play. Those of us
who attended one of the plays a couple of years
ago, can attest to the quality and interest of this
type of performance. After the play, we’ll go to
Rachel’s house for a cocktail/hors d’ouerves
party. Rather than driving home after such a
long day, we are in the process of making
arrangements to stay in the Lavonia area for the
night, for those wishing to do so. More details
will follow as the time grows nearer.
Also in June, we are having a pancake
breakfast tech session on the 26th at Carsmetics
in Alpharetta. Carsmetics offers scratch and dent
repair, minor collision repair, paintless dent
removal and plastic bumper repair. Come on out
for breakfast and learn more about their business
and how it might benefit you. Details will
follow in the June newsletter.

Rome, GA
Time: Registration 9:00 to 12:00(please see
their website for registration instruction and

For those not familiar with British Motorcar
Day this event has been something special for
over two and a half decades. Approximately 400
British only cars and motorcycles will be on
display with every conceivable English marque
from Rolls to MG’s available for viewing. Berry
College is a perfect background for our cars and
with a little imagination you can easily be in an
English countryside for an afternoon. All
proceeds go to charity so bring your car, your
British accent (no judging done so your car as is
will be just fine) and join our club for a relaxing
automotive day. The Harts will be bringing a
tent and some food but we ask that you bring an
entrée or appetizer or dessert and some drinks to
share to augment their outstanding effort. We’ll
have a big picnic! We’d like to see what you
drive so hope to see you there with your car.
