down...well, when he rvas feeling down, everyone tiptoedaround and tried not to do anlthing that would draw atten-tion to therlselr,es. Because r,'hen l(ng Saul was down. hegot very piclry and very grumpy. He might yeli at you forany little thing. It might be because your sandal wasn't lacedup right. It might be because you forgot to wash the royalchanot (even though it didn't really need washing). It mightbe because he didn't like the weather. It didn't rnatterw-hether or not it was your fault. He would find sonte ex-cuse for taking out his royal grumpiness bn you. (Sndentplaces Pttzzle Pie.ce A on wall or bulletin board.)It was during one of the king's grumpy moods that oneof the bravel servants spoke up. He told the king that heknew a young man who played the harp. This man playedso well that the music q'ould lift up your feelings.and floatyour bad mood right out the window. The king, who r.asfeeling exfta grumpy (even for him), shouted at the servantx'ho suggested this idea. How on earth could this servantthink he knew what wouid make the king feel better? Thepoor man cringed and begged the king to give his idea achance. The king grurnbled some more but finally said hewould give this harp player a try. Saul sent messengers froml-ris fortress in Gibeah to Bethlehem, the home of the harpplayer, whose name was David" (Point to Gibeab and Beth-lebern on rnap.)Tnr JemmrN'SHEPHERDNow David happened to be a shepherd. Back in thosedays, a shepherd had to be r.ery brave and very strong inorder to defend the sheep against all sorts of wild animals.Sometimes a shepherd even had to chase off robbers. Daviduras braver and stronger than most shepherds. But he hadsomething else going for him as well. David knew God verywell and God was alway.c with David. God had helpedDavid time and tine again It tr'as preti.. exciting for Davidto look back and remember how God had helped him out ofreal scary situations. David was so grateful when he thoughtof those times that most of the songs he played on his harpwere praise songs to God. {Student placa Puzzle Piece B)Vhen news of the king's call came, David was out in thefields taking care of his father's sheep. But David knew thatwhen the king calls, you'd better conie. Dayid's fatherloaded up a donkey with presents and sent them and hisson to grumpy King Saul. When he arrived, David immedi-ate\'played his harp and sang for the king. Sure enough, while David played, King Saul's feelings were lifted up andhis bad mood floated right out the window. {Student placesPuzzle Piece C.)David became a very valuabie man to King Saul. In fact,David became very valuable to everyone in the whole king-dom, so valuable that many years later, David became theking. (Student places Puzzle Piece D)THr WonsHiPrN'KING\flhen David became king, he remembered God and con-tinued to play praise songs to God. in fact, David encour-aged the whole country ta ioin him. Once he organized aparade to celebrate the reiurn of the Ark of the Covenant.

As you can imagine, it was a big day in Jerusalem. Tparude was a national event, sort of like a cross bem'eeNeq, Year's parade and a giant concert. There were couiess musician-s playing every kind of instrument. Thel' rymaking music to tell God how thankful they were. Twhole thing looked almost out.of control because the peple were so excited. Guess who was at the front ofwhole production? It was King Davidl He wasn't just staning there grinning. He was dancing and jumping with allmight because even though he was the king, he loved Gso much, he wanted to tell Him so. (Student places PuzPiece E.) Then they placed the Ark inside a special tent aDavid spoke to the people.
