SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE…
SUMMER BREAK…NOT SO FAST!
SUMMER SCHOOL
Summer break means rest and relaxation for many folks. Not for everyone though! We are excited to
welcome over 130 Airport students for summer school next week. This great program is a great way for
some of our outstanding teachers to help many of our youngsters with some areas in math and reading to
help them maintain gains from the past school year and get ready for the upcoming fall. Twice a week kids
are picked up by the bus, eat lunch, take part in fun activities, and most importantly get some great instruc-
tion that improves their learning skills. This grant funded program is in its third year and has grown every
summer.
CAMPS
Airport also offers some great camps during the summer months. In addition to many of the athletic camps
that happen around campus, we also offer art and robotics camps. These week long activities are a great way
for kids to get more time with these specific activities that they really love. Our art department and robotics
team do a great job of teaching techniques and making the days full of fun activities. Many times the kids
that are participating are having so much fun they don’t realize how much they are also learning.
SUMMER PROJECTS
Airport has one of the best maintenance and custodial groups around. I say that with great confidence and
gratitude. When everyone else goes home for the summer, these employees get to work. The buildings are
scrubbed from top to bottom, the grounds are maintained meticulously, and the big list of repairs and summer
projects are tackled. Every fall it is fun to see the students and community come back to school and see some
of the great work this group has done during the summer. They have great Jet Pride!

MYLEAD CONFERENCE With over twenty excellent applicants, it was difficult to select which students to represent AHS this year at
the MyLead Conference in Lansing. The finalists headed to Lansing with anticipation and some nervous ener-
gy. They returned to AHS as confident individuals with new leadership skills and many new friends. We were
proud to once again have excellent representation at MyLead 2016. The students would like to thank Airport
Schools for helping to defray the cost of the conference. These students will share their knowledge with next
year’s sophomores and encourage them to apply for the 2017 conference.
Miranda Banks, “Everyone was so friendly, one of the best experiences of my life!”
Kayla Wallet, “ I learned how to step out of my comfort zone.”
Gaige Frederick, “Go have a fun time with the most stupendous people!”
Brianna Holliday, “I will forever remember the friendships I made, and who I am now because of it.”

PEST MANAGEMENT
ADVISORY
The Airport Community School District
utilizes an Integrated Pest Management
(IPM) approach to control pests. IPM is
a pest management system that utilizes all
suitable techniques in a total pest manage-
ment system with the intent of preventing
pests from reaching unacceptable levels
or to reduce an existing population to an
acceptable level. Pest management tech-
niques emphasize pest exclusion and bio-
logical controls. However, as with most
pest control programs, chemical controls
may also be utilized. You have the right
to be informed prior to any application of
an insecticide, fungicide or herbicide
made to the school grounds or buildings
during the school year.
Application notices will be posted at ap-
plication sites and on the Districts web
site: http://www.airportschools.com. The
notifications will remain in place until the
time is met for safe entry. If you require
prior notification, please contact us at the
address below for the proper form that
you will need to complete and return.
There are exemptions to the notification
process, they include disinfectant clean-
ers, pesticides formulated as baits or gels
and any EPA exempt pesticides. In certain
emergencies, such as an infestation of
stinging insects, pesticides may be ap-
plied without prior notice to prevent inju-
ry to students, but notification will be
made following any such application.

STUDENT INFORMATION RULES DEFINED
Directory information is personally identi-
fiable information that generally would
not be considered harmful or an invasion
of privacy. This type of information
allows schools to create newsletters,
district publications, student publications
such as the newspaper and yearbook, and
allows the district to assist alumni groups
without contacting parents or former
students.
Airport Community Schools classifies
directory information as a parent’s name,
student’s name, address, telephone num-
ber, date of birth, photos, videos, partici-
pation in officially recognized activities
and sports, weight and height of athletic
team members, and degrees and awards
received.
FERPA, the Family Educational Rights
and Privacy Act, allows a school district
to release student information that is
classified as directory information un-
der the following conditions:
Unless a parent or eligible student
(those 18-years or older) objects, the
school district may disclose designat-
ed directory information without prior
consent. The school district may dis-
close information of persons no long-
er in attendance without notice. The
school district annually will provide
public notice that directory infor-
mation may be disclosed.
The school district will disclose this
information unless notified in writing to
the contrary by a parent or eligible stu-
dent no later than September 16, 2016.
Letters should be addressed to:

ASBESTOS ABATEMENT NOTICE
In compliance with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Asbestos
Emergency Response Act (AERA), we performed inspections in each of our school
buildings for asbestos-contained building materials in the fall of 1988. The inspection
findings and the asbestos management plans have been on file in each school’s
administrative office since that time.
The EPA requires us to perform re-inspections of the materials every three years. In
2013, accredited asbestos inspectors performed these re-inspections. An accredited
management planner reviewed the results of the re-inspections, and recommended
actions we should take to safely manage any asbestos material in our buildings. A
new inspection will be completed in December 2016.
The results of the re-inspections are on file in the management plan located in each
school’s administrative office. The public is welcome to review these during normal
school hours, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM.
The Asbestos Program Manager is Dan Fahnestock. He is available to answer ques-
tions you may have about asbestos in our buildings, (734) 869-7210.

the grievance, the Board of Education shall
meet with the concerned parties and their
representative within forty (40) days of the

a copy of the district’s grievance procedure and
investigate all complaints in accordance with
this procedure. A copy of each of the Acts,
and the regulations on which this notice is
based, may be found in the Civil Rights
Coordinator’s office.
WHAT TO DO IF SCHOOL IS
DELAYED OR CANCELLED At any time during the school year it may
be necessary to cancel school or delay the
start of school due to a variety of reasons:
extremely bad weather, poor road condi-
tions, mechanical failures, or other emer-
gency situations. While this is rare, you
and your child must be prepared. Being
prepared begins with making sure your
student has a safe place to go to if school
is cancelled or delayed, i.e. they are
able to get back into the house, can go to
a daycare or to a relative or friend’s home.
If there is a two-hour delay in the morn-
ing, the school buses will pick up students
two hours after their usual pick up time
at their normal pick up location. This
includes all Airport buses. If unforeseen
events occur during the school day it
would be extremely rare to send students
home early from school. The normal
practice is to complete the school day, but
your child must know what to do and
where to go in case he or she is sent home
early. We never want to send a child
home if they do not know whether or not
they will be able to get inside their home.
Cancellations of after school events such
as games, practices, concerts or other
activities are determined before dismis-
sal.
If school is cancelled, all athletic levels
below varsity level are cancelled. Any
varsity or junior varsity athletic contest
that is scheduled on a snow day might be
played. The final decision will be made
by school administration.
HOW TO FIND OUT IF SCHOOL IS
CANCELLED OR DELAYED
You will receive a Honeywell Instant
Alert by phone, text, or email.

BUS RULES STRESS
SAFETY
The Airport Community Schools District,
geographically in Michigan, consists of 110
square miles. The vast majority of our
students use bus service to and from school.
For many students, the distance traveled is
substantial. With this fact in mind, Airport
Community Schools continually seeks to
improve bus service with the child’s safety
being a primary concern. The students are
the major factor in school bus safety.
Students need to remain seated and talk
quietly so that the bus driver can concentrate
on driving the bus.
The district’s bus drivers and administrators
work together to clarify the discipline
program used on the district buses. The
program provides:
A bus discipline program that closely
resembles the discipline procedures used in
our classrooms.
Communication about student needs and
behavior between principals, teachers, and
bus drivers.
Uniform rules and consequences for
behavior on all buses in the district.
Bus behavior may be monitored by video
camera.
Examples of Basic Assertive Discipline Plan
Rules:
Respect driver and follow directions given
by the driver.
All school rules apply.
Use conduct that will not distract the bus
driver.
All parts of the body and all objects stay
inside the bus.
No eating or drinking on the bus.
Stay in your assigned seat.
No animals on the bus.
No electronic games on the bus.
No cell phones are to be used on the bus.
Please review these rules with your child to
ensure a safe school year. Any questions please
call 734-869-7210.
