Section4:ShippingThis section contains instructions for the preparation of shipping the vehicle from one location to another.Normally, the shipping of the unit does not involve storage time. If the unit is to be stored before or aftershipment, refer to Section 5: Storage of this chapter for details of preparation.

This unit is normally shipped in fully operational status and can be driven to on-load or off-load from thetrailer bed of the transporting truck. Any systems that are not operation shall be appropriately tagged onthe unit and indicated on the shipping document that accompanies the tractor.

4.1ShippingPreparation

4.1.1Tie-DownPoints(TruckShipping)The unit is secured through the front and rear hitch pins and through the designed chain holes in the fourwheel wells (See Figure 1-4-1). No other tie-down points are authorized.

4.1.2Battery1. Disconnect battery terminals from battery posts.

2. Leave battery in battery box.

4.1.3Engine1. Drain coolant from engine cooling system.

2. Close and seal all openings.

4.1.4FuelTank

1. Drain fuel from fuel tank into appropriate container.

2. Disconnect fuel line at lowest accessible connection and drain fuel from fuel line.

3. Reconnect fuel lines.

4. Leave fuel cap on tank, but loosened.

5. Close and seal all openings.

4.1.5Checks

1. Ensure fuel line is connected.

2. Ensure shut-off valve on radiator is closed.

3. Ensure fuel cell drain valve is closed.

4. Review the transportation data plate (if equipped) for additional shipping information.

4.1.6SpecialShippingRequirementsUnits shipped overseas may be coated with a corrosion inhibitor to prevent excessive corrosion while thunit is exposed to the elements during shipboard transportation. The corrosion inhibitor may be appliedwith a brush or via a spray gun.

4.2PreparationforOperation

4.2.1Tie-DownPoints(TruckShipping)Remove tie-downs from the forward and rear hitch pins of the vehicle.

4.2.2EngineNo special requirements.

4.2.3Radiator1. Ensure radiator drain valve is closed.

2. Add coolant to fill cooling system.

WARNING: HAZARD EXISTS WHEN REFUELING AND DEFUELING THE TRACTOR - NOSMOKING, NO OPEN FLAMES, NO ELECTRICAL DEVICE OPERATIONS.

NOTE: Drain is located under unit directly below the tank.

NOTE: On units so equipped, ensure the in-line fuel shut-off valve is open.

Section5:StorageThis section contains instructions for preparing the vehicle for short term or long term storage.

5.1ShortTermStorage

Short term storage applies to equipment that is to be stored for a period of 30 to 120 days. Ensure allrequirements are preformed and met when preparing the unit for short term storage.

5.1.1GeneralEngineandEngineComponents

This section of the MA Maintenance Manual has been created from the Ford MSG-425 (2.5L) Operator’sManual.

5.1.1.1FuelSystem

Add fuel Stabilizer.

5.1.1.2CoolingSystem

Check coolant protection.

5.1.1.3Airintake

While the engine is running:

1. Treat upper cylinders by spraying engine fogging agent into the air intake for two minutes.

2. Open throttle for short burst of speed.

3. Shut off engine and allow it to come to a stop while continuing to spray into air intake

5.1.1.4AdditionEngineComponents

1. Leave spark plugs in holes or seal spark plug holes with suitable threaded metal plugs.

2. Cover all openings into engine with non- hygroscopic dust-proof caps or shields.

3. Store indoors in dry area

5.1.2TransmissionNo special requirements.

5.1.3BatteryDisconnect battery terminals.

CAUTION: The engine must be stored in an area that is dry and has uniform temperature.

CAUTION:

It is imperative to add stabilizer in any application where the fuel will not be con-sumed within thirty days. Without the use of an additive, the unused fuel in yourfuel tank can and will go sour in a very short period of time, causing varnish andcontaminants to form. This causes problems in fuel delivery by clogging fuel injec-tors.

NOTE: The correct ratio is 2 oz. (59 mL) stabilizer to 5 US gallons (3.79 L) of gasoline.

NOTE: Keep the battery fully charged during storage.

5.1.4LubricantsEnsure all major components are lubricated with specified lubricants.

5.1.5FluidLevelsCheck all fluid levels and top off as necessary.

5.1.6AxlesNo special requirements.

5.1.7Tires

1. Using a forklift, lift the unit from a designated jack point being careful not to damage any compo-nents.

2. Remove the tractor’s weight from its tires by supporting it with blocks placed beneath the axle orthe body.

5.1.8ShortTermColdStorage.

For units that operate in temperatures below -20°F (-28.9 °C) down to -40°F (-40 °C) perform the followingsteps:

1. Perform all steps in short term storage as outlined in previous section.

2. Charge the battery when the unit is not in use.

3. Drain windshield washer fluid.

WARNING:

TO AVOID INJURY TO PERSONNEL OR DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT, ALWAYS USELIFTING EQUIPMENT, SAFETY JACKS, AND CHAINS WITH A SAFE MINIMUMCAPACITY OF ONE AND A HALF (1.5)TIMES THE WEIGHT OF THE VEHICLEBEING LIFTED.

NOTE: A floor jack may also be used to lift the unit as long as the proper jacking procedures arefollowed. (Refer to 3.2 Jacking Instructions).

NOTE: Always charge the batteries overnight to prevent the internal temperature of the battery fromdropping too low. In extreme cold, an externally powered battery warming blanket may berequired.

5.2ReturningtheTractortoOperationAfterShort-TermStorageEnsure all requirements are preformed and met when returning the unit from short term storage.

5.2.1Engine1. Visually inspect the engine systems to ensure integrity.

2. If sealed. unseal spark plug holes.

3. Uncover all openings into engine previously covered with dust-proof caps or shields.

4. Check engine fluid levels and service as required.

5.2.2TransmissionService transmission in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations contained in 3.5.3 Trans-mission Oil and Filter Change.

5.2.3Battery1. Clean the battery posts and cable clamps.

2. Lightly coat the battery clamps and posts with petroleum jelly.

3. Connect the battery cables.

4. Charge the batteries if required.

5.2.4Tires

1. Using forklift, lift the unit from a designated jack point being careful not to damage any compo-nents.

2. Remove blocks from beneath the tractor.

3. Lower the tractor to the ground.

4. Check tire pressure.

5. If required, inflate them to 60 psi (413.6kPa) for front tires and 65 psi (448.1 kPa) for rear depend-ing on tire specifications.

WARNING:

1. Run engine until completely out of fuel.

2. Restart and run on a mixture of unleaded gasoline and stabilizer for 10 minutes.

3. While engine is still running and at completion of run, treat upper cylinders by spraying foggingagent into the air intake for two (2) minutes

4. Open throttle for short burst of speed, shut off engine and allow it to come to a stop while continu-ing to spray into air intake.

5.3.1.4AdditionalEngineComponents

1. Clean exterior surface of engine.

2. Leave spark plugs in holes or seal spark plug holes with suitable threaded metal plugs.

3. Seal all openings in engine and accessories with non-hygroscopic material.

4. Mask off all areas to be used for electrical contacts.

5. Ensure all surfaces are dry, and then spray all taped openings, all engine accessories includingignition wiring, and all exterior surfaces of engine with Insulation Compound.

6. If engine is equipped with automotive type clutch, block clutch in slightly disengaged position sothat lining and pressure plates are not in contact.

7. Fit all engine openings with air-tight, water-tight covers to delay the vaporization process of thecorrosion protection agents.

8. Fasten a tag to the starting switch on the control panel reading as follows:

CAUTION:

The engine must be stored in an area that is dry and has uniform temperature. It is imperative to add stabilizer in any application where the fuel will not be consumed within thirty days. Without the use of an additive, the unused fuel in the fuel tank can and will go sour in a very short period of time, causing varnish and contami-nants to form. This causes problems in fuel delivery by clogging fuel injectors.

NOTE: Ford Fuel stabilizer should be available through all EDI Distributors. The correct ratio is 2 oz.(59 mL) stabilizer to 5 US gallons (3.79 L) of gasoline.

5.3.2Transmission1. Drain transmission fluid.

5.3.3LubricantsEnsure all major components are lubricated with specified lubricant.

5.3.5BatteryPack

1. Disconnect the battery cables and remove the battery from the unit.

2. Lightly coat the cable clamps and rub down hardware with petroleum jelly.

3. Place the battery in a dry, well ventilated area. Recommended storeroom temperature of 0 °C (32°F) to 32 °C (90 °F).

4. Charge the battery, if required.

5.3.6Tires

Remove the weight from the tractor’s tires by supporting the tractor with blocks beneath the axles and thebody.

5.3.7Windows(CabOptiononly)Using bands to hold it, place heavy cardboard over the windows.

5.3.8LongTermColdStorageFor units that operate in temperatures below -20°F (-28.9 °C) down to -40°F (-40 °C) perform the samesteps as listed for 5.1.8 Short Term Cold Storage.

CAUTION: DO NOT store the battery directly on the floor or ground. The battery must be storedin a cool, dry place and must not be exposed to direct sunlight.

5.4.4Tires1. Inflate the tires to 60 psi (413.6kPa) for front tires and 65 psi (448.1 kPa) for rear depending on tire

and ballast specifications.

2. Remove the tractor from blocks.

5.4.5Windows(CabOptiononly)Remove cardboard and strapping for the windows.

5.4.6Battery1. Install battery in the unit.

2. Clean the battery cables and posts.

3. Lightly coat the clamps and battery posts with dielectric grease.

4. Connect the battery cables to the posts.

5.4.7Pre-OperationChecks1. Perform Pre-operational checks located in the MA Operation’s Manual.

2. Remove the warning tag from the cab and start the unit.

3. Operate the unit under no load conditions until it is clear that all the systems are operating cor-rectly.

NOTE: The unit will run rough and emit smoke vapor for the first few minutes until all preservativeshave cleared from the systems.
