The field:
is designed to provide an academic award for learning in the specialist subject area of aircraft maintenance engineering that was hitherto not recognised, and thereby encourage more students to consider a career in the aircraft maintenance industry
is intended to enhance the career opportunities and the professional standing of aircraft maintenance engineers, and provide a foundation for lifelong learning in the field
enables EASA Part 147 approved organisations to deliver a course that satisfies both the academic requirements of higher education and the knowledge requirements of the EASA Part 66 category B licence, thereby providing students with the opportunity to obtain both an academic award and a vocational qualification from a single course of study
Satisfactory completion of the FD provides entry to a BEng(Hons) Aircraft Engineering Top-up course and the possibility of post graduate study on the MSc Aircraft Engineering. The BEng(Hons) is accredited by the RAeS at IEng level and thus provides professional engineer status.
Successful completion of an EASA approved category B licence course provides a solid foundation for a career in aircraft maintenance engineering. Once the work experience requirement has been satisfied and a B licence obtained, there is the opportunity to complete aircraft type courses, gain approvals, and start certifying work on aircraft. Further experience provides the opportunity to apply for a Category C licence and to take on team leader and management roles.
The programme was designed and developed in partnership with KLM UK Engineering, Norwich, and is franchised to a number of public and private sector organisations in the UK, and private organisations overseas.

C. EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE FIELDThe aims of the field are to:
provide intermediate level courses that fulfil the requirements of higher education, whilst at the same time satisfying the knowledge requirements of the EASA Part 66 category B licence syllabi
provide an opportunity for students to obtain an academic award and a vocational qualification from a single course of study (when the FdEng is delivered by an EASA 147 approved organisation), or to complete an academic course that also provides the knowledge base for the vocational qualifications in aircraft maintenance
provide a combination of academic study and work based learning which will equip students with the knowledge and practical skills necessary for them to obtain an EASA category B licence and become proficient aircraft maintenance engineers
provide students with the opportunity to develop their written and oral communications skills, and prepare them for further study at honours degree level
prepare students for employment as licensed aircraft maintenance engineers
prepare students for continuous professional development by encouraging the use of personal development plans and introducing them to professional institutions
D. LEARNING OUTCOMES (OBJECTIVES) OF THE FIELD Knowledge and UnderstandingOn completion of the field, students will be able to demonstrate:

E. FIELD STRUCTUREThe field is part of the Kingston University Undergraduate Modular Scheme (UMS). Fields in the UMS are made up of modules which are assigned to levels. Levels are more challenging as students progress through the field.
Typically, a student must complete a minimum of 240 credits for an FD, however, the Aircraft Engineering FD has 285 credits because it was validated before the standard 240 credit framework for FD’s came into effect, and it contains a large proportion of practical work. It is also not possible to remove modules (credit) without removing material required to satisfy the knowledge requirements of EASA part 66. In addition to being an aim of the field and FD, loss of EASA Part 66 coverage would result in the course being less attractive for delivery by EASA 147 approved organisations, and also students wishing to become licensed engineers.
There are currently two routes available: mechanical (B1.1) and avionic (B2). Both comprise 285 credits of study at levels 3, 4, and 5. Modules totalling 210 credits are common to both routes, and modules totalling 75 credits are route specific. The modules for both routes are shown table E1.
The different resources available to the various franchised partners results in the module sequence and course duration varying slightly from one delivery site to the next. All franchised providers deliver the course full-time over two academic years, although course lengths vary from 36 weeks to 42 weeks in order to satisfy EASA requirements. Most partners have intakes that start in September at the start of the Further Education or Higher Education academic year, however, intakes starting in January and June are also available at one partner organisation. The course can also be delivered part-time over four years.
Full details of module sequence, course duration and start and finish dates at each partner organisation can be found in Liaison Documents and course literature. Details are also included on the KU and partner organisation websites, and in student handbooks.
Students who do not complete the course are eligible for the award of a Certificate of Higher Education if they achieve at least 120 credits at level 4.

F. FIELD REFERENCE POINTSThe field has been designed with reference to the Engineering Benchmark statement, UK-SPEC Standard for Incorporated Engineers and the Foundation Degree Qualification Benchmark.
The awards made to students who complete the field comply with the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
All the procedures associated with the field comply with the QAA Codes of Practice for Higher Education.
The field satisfies the knowledge requirements for the EASA Part 66 category B1.1 and B2 licences.
G. TEACHING AND LEARNING STRATEGIES A number of teaching and learning strategies are used to achieve the course aims and learning outcomes of the various modules. Specific strategies are provided in the individual module descriptions.

Generally course material will be delivered by lectures and instructional techniques, whilst associated tutorials, laboratory activities and workshops are used to support and enhance the lectures and learning. Transferable skills are developed both through specific sessions and workshop and work-based activities undertaken by the students.
Students on courses which are not EASA Part 147 approved will normally receive 55 hours of contact time (lectures and tutorials) per single module. Students are expected to spend a further 95 hours per single module on student-centred learning. Such learning may take a variety of forms including: using libraries for research or to investigate topics; amplifying notes taken during lectures and tutorials and by carrying out assignments and projects generally.
Students on EASA Part 147 approved courses will receive the contact hours specified in approved organisations Maintenance Training Organisation's Exposition (MTOE) submitted to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) in order to satisfy the requirements of EASA Part 147. The EASA requirement for the course to contain 2400 hours of managed training means the courses delivered by approved training organisations will extend over standard academic vacation periods. Students will be advised of this before the course starts and will receive a calendar of key dates at the start of each year.
Teaching and Learning Strategies for Work Based LearningThe programme has two modules identified specifically as work based learning: AE1301 Workshop and Hangar Practice and AE2302 Aircraft Hangar Training. A number of other modules in the programme contain practical tasks or exercises that are work related. The work-based and work related activities completed in workshops and in the aircraft hangar integrate different disciplines and provide a real-world experience designed to prepare students for their expected future role as aircraft maintenance engineers.
The work experience element of courses delivered by EASA Part 147 approved training organisations provides a real industrial dimension. For courses delivered by partners that are not EASA Part 147 or local aviation authority approved, the industrial dimension will be ensured through work-based activities.
AE1301 is a double module that focuses on the hand-skills necessary for an aircraft maintenance engineer to fulfil their role. The module is normally delivered almost entirely within a workshop environment. Skills are normally demonstrated, then practiced and finally assessed. The various tasks each student completes are designed to develop the skills and improve their precision and accuracy.
AE2302 is a double module that focuses on aircraft maintenance skills. Students are normally introduced to maintenance tasks and activities in controlled environments that simulate the real workplace. Students are then given the opportunity to develop the skills in real aircraft maintenance environments such as workshops, stores and on the aircraft hangar. During this phase students get the opportunity to work alongside practising aircraft maintenance engineers.

H. ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES
The assessment strategy is designed to assess the theoretical aspects of the course and the workshop and work-based learning that is acquired by the students during the course of study. The method of assessment is related to the learning outcome being assessed, and therefore in any one module a range of assessment methods may be used.
An outline of the required assessment in any module is contained in the module description. Full details of the assessment for each module are contained in the Complete Assessment Schedule published and distributed to staff at the start of each academic year and supplied to students in an appendix of the Student Handbook. The schedule ensures a common assessment strategy and common assessment formats across the extended consortium.
Students must pass all elements of assessment associated with each module in order to obtain a pass grade for that module. The weighting of individual elements of assessment within a module are detailed in the module descriptions and module guides. For a module to be compensated by an examination board, all major elements of assessment within the module must satisfy the compensation regulations.
Modules will be graded in accordance with the UMS.
Student maintained Logbooks form part of the overall assessment plan for the Introductory Year Zero and the Foundation Degree course.
In addition to the degree assessments, all students on EASA Part 147 approved courses, who wish to obtain an EASA Training Certificate, will be subject to EASA Part 66 examinations and practical assessments in accordance with the requirements of EASA and the approved organisations MTOE. Satisfactory completion of logbooks will form part of the EASA practical assessment plan.
EASA Part 147 approved maintenance training organisations are approved to set, mark and grade EASA Part 66 multi-choice examinations, essay examinations and practical assessments. Students studying on courses which are not EASA Part 147 approved may apply to take the EASA Part 66 examinations in a manner approved by the CAA.

I. ENTRY QUALIFICATIONSStandard entry qualifications:
160 points, to include two 6 unit awards or equivalent.
A-level mathematics and a suitable science subject required. General studies not accepted.
Vocational A-levels: engineering based subject.
BTEC National Diploma or Certificate in engineering subjects may satisfy entry requirements provided the student has 5 GCSE’s as below. (160 points required because no grades give 140 points).
Plus GCSE (A-C): five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, or as an alternative a minimum of 10 points in Key Skills Communication and/or Application of Number
Successful completion of an Engineering/Technology Foundation course, or Access to HE course, and an appropriate level of attainment may satisfy entry requirements.
Non-standard entry qualifications:
Completed JAR examinations
Completed BCAR Section L licence course
FAA licence holder
Live aircraft work experience
The above entry requirements apply to entry for UK applicants. For EU and overseas applicants to UK courses and applicants to overseas programmes the entry criteria will be the equivalent as determined by reference to NARIC. This requirement may be waived for overseas programmes where students are required to complete a preparatory course of study that will bring them up to the required level for entry to the FD. The content and duration of the preparatory course will be agreed between the Liaison Officers and Field Leader and approved by the Engineering Quality Assurance Committee (EQAC); any changes to the course will be considered by boards of study and EQAC and not implemented without ECAQ approval.
EU and overseas applicants to UK courses and applicants to overseas programmes will be expected to have IELTS 6.0 average with a minimum of 5.5 in writing unless continuing English support is embedded in the programme of study, where the entry requirement will be 5.5 average with a minimum of 5.0 in writing.
Applicants may be asked to sit an entry examination and/or attend an interview.

J. CAREER OPPORTUNITIESOver the past 20 years the need for aircraft designers and manufacturers has reduced considerably. In contrast, there has been exponential growth in the air transport industry and the need for aircraft maintenance engineers. The outcome of this mismatch is an unsatisfied demand of unprecedented proportions for graduate calibre aircraft maintenance engineers.
Over the last 10 years there have been a several reports, including a government white paper highlighting the shortage of aircraft maintenance engineers. SEMTA states in its Sector Skills Agreement of January 2006 “The recruitment of Licensed Engineers (Part 66, Category B and above) will become increasingly difficult over the next 3 years.”, and suggests a solution to the problem would be to “Promote Kingston Aeronautical Foundation degree (JAA 66/EASA) (England).”
As a result, the employment opportunities for FD Aircraft Engineering graduates are excellent, especially those who complete the course at an EASA 147 approved maintenance training organisation.
K. INDICATORS OF QUALITYOn 10 December 2002 Kingston received the ‘Award of Excellence in Maintenance Training’ accreditation from the European Institute of Transport Management.
In January 2003, the course was cited by the UK Government as an example of good practice in its White Paper “The Future of Higher Education”.
In January 2006, the Sector Skills Council for Aerospace (SEMTA) cited the Kingston University EASA compliant FD as a way of solving the shortage of aircraft engineers.
The FD Aircraft Engineering courses delivered by: KLM UK Engineering, Newcastle College, Exeter College (under Flybe’s 147 approval), AAIAA and the BAES/SDT/AAC partnership are all European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Part -147 approved. The course delivered by ATTC in Singapore is Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore approved.
L. APPROVED VARIANTS FROM THE UMS/PCFThe FD Aircraft Engineering has 285 CATS credits. This was approved at validation because a large proportion (50%) of the course is practical.
The Field Leader is permitted to chair assessment sub-boards to decide on re-assessment prior to the main assessment boards. Students will be given the opportunity to take re-assessment as decided by the sub-board during the academic year. This has been approved because the extended duration of the course results in a lack of time between stages to provide students with sufficient time to be advised of, prepare for, and sit reassessment.
Students must pass all major elements of assessment associated with each module in order to obtain a pass grade for the module. Compensation can only be awarded for a failed module if all the major elements of assessment in the module satisfy the compensation regulations.
