BIG DATA MEANS BIGThe analysis of statistical data from the global aviation market over the past 30 years contains potential treasure troves of information for marketing teams. And yet, until now the aircraft manufacturer did not have any tools capable of processing such large amounts of information. The main challenge for the BIO project was to develop a tool able to process very large data volumes without needing to reconfigure a multivariate analysis table (cube) for each new analytical request. Because it did not have an appropriate solution, Airbus called upon SQLI. Having already worked with Airbus’s existing business intelligence tools, and with a thorough understanding of the context and business, SQLI recommended the DigDash Enterprise solution, a business intelligence tool based on an in-memory computing technology used to create dashboards that can be viewed online.

Eric Gavoty, VP Sales & Marketing for DigDash, provided more details on the solution:

« Our DigDash Enterprise software can natively analyse structured and unstructured data and manage very

large volumes of data (in this case, processing 5 billion lines with nearly instantaneous returns). This makes it a leader among Agile Big Data or Big Analytics software solutions. »Claudie Costes-Druilhe, Manager of SQLI’s Business Intelligence unit, adds:

« SQLI quickly decided on the DigDash Enterprise product to address the problems in designing dashboards and exploring data within very large databases while taking into account the complexity of the information systems to be integrated. This vision was shared with our clients, notably during a breakfast meeting organised in Toulouse in partnership with the software publisher, which resulted in the successful implementation of the software within the framework of this project.»

« With the BIO project, we are making a true digital transformation: we switched from a «push» to a «pull» information strategy. Our business teams no longer wait for a monthly report in their inbox: instead, they go straight to the information they are looking for. For our users, it still seems a bit like magic, the extreme complexity is at the back end. The simplicity of the DigDash Enterprise solution as well as its quick response times are key factors to winning the support of information consumers. »

AN AGILE PROJECT IN PLATFORM MODE

In addition to storage problems, the import of massive amounts of data and, in particular, the analysis of this data by cross-referencing it with Airbus’s in-house data was a significant challenge for the business and IS teams, which opted for agile software development. These efforts were carried out via a platform that brought together developers, IT architects and business experts to foster the exchange of information and to test the product during the development phase.

INTEGRATION WITHIN AIRBUS’S IT CONTEXT

The BIO project turned out to be an unusual one: it was actually an IT/business project. The dual IT/business teams did a superb job in challenging the conventional methods and tools used by the company. The project team also received specific support from the SQLI integration expert whose consultants possessed the “soft skills” required for the project’s success. SQLI’s business information experts were selected not only for their technical expertise but also for their other skills, such as an innovation-focused mindset.

USER AUTONOMY

Today, Samuel Picaud, Business Project Leader, and Aurélien Turina, IT Project Leader, who are in charge of the BIO project, have succeeded in their bid by delivering the foundation used to make the information available to the teams. The platform is now entering the production phase. The newly created data stewards team ensures that objects are populated correctly (geography, accounts, devices, airports, etc.) within the enormous database. At the same time, a separate team provides governance for the system and makes decisions on new system developments.
