Drive them from our shore! They're not like you and me Which means they must be evil We must sound the drums of war! Explain how useful is this source to us Select which adjectives indicate the different viewpoints Summarise the views of the two groups There was bound to be a conflict as it was such a clash in cultures the two could not live peacefully side by side. The white people believed in Manifest Destiny the white people should spread their ideas and rule all of America. Old people are left to die (exposure) Indians are nomadic and live in tipis An Indian can have more than one wife polygamy Belief in spirits Indians will not buy or sell land. It belongs to all living things. Point Evidence Explanation Link back to the question Family life portrayed many striking differences such as polygamy (having more than one wife) and exposure (leaving the dying when moving on to a new settlement. This was seen as perfectly normal to the Sioux but to the settlers, this was against the Christian teachings which demanded respected for the elderly and forbid polygamy. The settlers were bound to see the Indians as cruel savages. Why did white settlers often find it difficult to understand the culture of the Plains Indians? Working in pairs: create a PEEL paragraph which aims to answer the question. By joining all the paragraphs together we should have the beginnings of a strong essay! Level 1 Simple statement(s) offered, showing some relevant knowledge. Student offers a valid comment or reason E.g. Indians used scalping; moved around; were seen as savages Level 2 Statements are developed with support from material which is mostly relevant and accurate. Student gives a narrative or descriptive answer about culture(s). Links remain implicit E.g. customs were very different; different views on land; did not have technology Level 3 The answer shows understanding of the focus of the question and is able to support the factors identified with sufficient accurate and relevant detail. Student identifies and explains reasons for view of Indians as uncivilised E.g clash of cultures on warfare; religious differences; social customs; nomadic lifestyle; seen as uncivilised; lacked technology Why did white settlers often find it difficult to understand the culture of the Plains Indians?
