2015 ANNUAL REPORT 3

AAs the profession’s oldest and largest professional membership organization for design—with 70 chapters and more than 25,000 members—AIGA advances design as a professional craft, strategic advantage, and vital cultural force. AIGA brings together practitioners, enthusiasts, and patrons to amplify the voice of design and create the vision for a collective future. Founded in 2003, the AIGA Blue Ridge chapter serves the design community of western Maryland, West Virginia, northern Virginia, and southern Pennsylvania. Powered by volunteers, we strive to enhance professional development, guide design education, define global standards and ethical practices, and make powerful tools and resources accessible to all.

2015 ANNUAL REPORT 5

MEMBERSHIP AIGA members come from all backgrounds, all fields, and all levels of experience. Whether you’re a design enthusiast, student, freelance designer, in-house designer, design educator, design thinker, or a business owner, AIGA is here to welcome you into the wider world of design. AIGA Blue Ridge began its fiscal year as one of the smallest chapters, with only 40 members. However, by July 2015, the membership had increased by 35% and ended the year at 54.

SPONSORSHIP AIGA Blue Ridge is grateful to the dedicated local and national sponsors that actively support our chapter’s programs and activities. This year’s local sponsors included Cowork Frederick, HBP, Inc., Text Design, Inc., and Wood Street, Inc.; national support was provided by Adobe, Lynda.com, and Shutterstock.

PROGRAMMING Each year, AIGA Blue Ridge develops and produces a diverse series of programming, including design lectures, professional development presentations, public service events, portfolio reviews, networking sessions, competitions, exhibitions, and more. This year, AIGA Blue Ridge produced nearly 20 programs to benefit our members including:

The Storyteller’s Art: 40 Years of Telling Stories with Images AIGA Blue Ridge brought Kit Hinrichs, a former Pentagram partner, to Frederick, MD in September 2014. Hinrich’s love for the American flag tied in with Maryland’s celebration of the 200th anniversary of the writing of the Star Spangled Banner by Frederick native, Francis Scott Key. The event created a buzz in the Frederick community, draw-ing a crowd of nearly 80 people, including many non-members, and was featured in the Frederick News Post.

MockUp: Student Design Challenge AIGA Blue Ridge’s annual student design challenge took place in late October 2015 at Shepherd University, in Shepherdstown, WV. The event had one of the largest number of participants in its

history with 11 four-person student teams, each led by a professional mentor. Teams were tasked to design a logo, specific stationery, and collateral items for a local non-profit company.

The Birth of a Designer Ram Castillo stopped in our area during his national book tour. AIGA Blue Ridge hosted a full day of events in Decem-ber 2014. The Australian native visited South Carroll High School to speak to more than 50 high school students interested in design. Castillo’s presentation explained the importance of design, education, and how to find a job as a designer. The inspiring event made the front page of Carroll County Times. That evening, Castillo spoke to a group of college students and professionals at Cowork Frederick.

2015 ANNUAL REPORT 7

Flux Student Design Competition Flux is a nation-wide student design competition hosted annually by AIGA Blue Ridge. This year there were nearly 500 entries stretching across the country from the Univer-sity of South Florida to California State University, and the competi-tion generated almost $4,000 in revenue for AIGA Blue Ridge. Judges included Drew Davies from Oxide Design, Jean Peterson from Jean Peterson Design, and Rich Holland from CO:LAB. In January 2015, AIGA Blue Ridge hosted a reception and exhibition celebrating all of this year’s participants and selected entries. More than 40 people attended the event, including several award winners.

HolidazeAIGA Blue Ridge partnered with the American Advertising Federa-tion of Greater Frederick (AAF-GF) to host a holiday social and public service event. More than 50 guests, including the area’s many talent-ed creatives attended. Attendees shared in the holiday spirit to keep others warm and toasty during the winter months by collecting dona-tions like blankets, mittens, hats, coats and scarves for The Frederick Rescue Mission.

Movie Night: Helvetica In January 2015, more than 15 members joined the AIGA Blue Ridge board for a viewing of the movie Helvetica.

Portfolio Bootcamp Every spring, AIGA Blue Ridge hosts a student Portfolio Bootcamp with the American Advertising Federation of Greater Frederick. This year was the most success-ful portfolio review to date with over 70 students in attendance at the Delaplaine Visual Arts Center in downtown Frederick, MD. A keynote presentation by Joseph Szala, Restaurant Brand Strategist & Senior Creative at Iris Worldwide preceded the reviews.

Essentials Series The goal of Essentials, AIGA Blue Ridge’s monthly learning and professional development series, is to arm our members with knowledge, inspiration, and sources to make them a more well-rounded design professional.

BrewBQ At the end of the year in June 2015, AIGA Blue Ridge invited our mem-bers and guests to join us at Milk-house Brewery at Stillpoint Farm for a free, family-friendly social. We had 26 people in attendance, including current members from AIGA Blue Ridge and AIGA Balti-more, along with family members, and non-members. We celebrated another successful year, and an-nounced our 2015–2016 initiatives and events.
