Thisyearmarkstheeighthtimethiscornerstonemeetinghasbeenheld.Convenedeveryfouryears,theResearchWorkshopservesasaplatformforAHNS’smissionandprovidesaninternationalforumforthepresentationanddiscussionofnewresearchdevelopmentsinallscientificfieldsrelatedtoheadandneckcancer.Wehavecarefullydesignedtheprogramaroundidentifyingthenationalresearchprioritiesinheadandneckcancerforthenextfiveyears.TheprogramfeaturestwokeynotelecturesfromDrs.WilliamPaoandLeviGarraway,avarietyofconcurrentsessions–bothpanelsandscientificsessionstocomplementthedifferentdisciplineswhoseresearchaddressestheproblemsofheadandneckcancers,anexhibithallwiththelatestscientificproductsandservices,andseveralsocialopportunitiesfornetworkingandcollaboration.

Throughincreasedinteractionsbetweenscientistsandcliniciansinthefield,the2010ResearchWorkshopoffersauniqueopportunitytodisseminatenewresearchfindings,stimulatenewresearchinitiatives,anddiscussandimplementtranslationalresearchobjectivesandgoals.

HiSTORY OF THE SOCiETYOnMay13,1998,TheAmericanHeadandNeckSociety(AHNS)becamethesinglelargestorganizationinNorthAmericafortheadvancementofresearchandeducationinheadandneckoncology.Themergeroftwosocieties,theAmericanSocietyforHeadandNeckSurgeryandtheSocietyofHeadandNeckSurgeons,formedtheAmericanHeadandNeckSociety.

ThecontributionsmadebythetwosocietiesformingtheAHNSaresignificantinthehistoryofsurgeryintheUnitedStates.Dr.HayesMartinconceivedtheSocietyofHeadandNeckSurgeonsin1954,asurgeonconsideredbymanytobethe“fatherofmodernheadandnecktumorsurgery.”Thepurposeofthesocietywastoexchangeandadvancethescientificknowledgerelevanttothesurgeryofheadandnecktumors(exclusiveofbrainsurgery)withanemphasisoncanceroftheheadandneck.Twoyearslater,TheAmericanSocietyforHeadandNeckSurgerywasorganizedwiththegoalto“facilitateandadvanceknowledgerelevanttosurgicaltreatmentofdiseasesoftheheadandneck,includingreconstructionandrehabilitation;promoteadvancementofthehighestprofessionalandethicalstandardsastheypertaintothepracticeofmajorheadandnecksurgery;andtohonorthosewhohavemademajorcontributionsinthefieldofheadandnecksurgery,orhaveaidedinitsadvancement”.
