‘HAPPY’ DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN
In front of an opening-day crowd of 44,873–the largest in 21
years–James McIngvale’s Runhappy (Super Saver) put an
exclamation point on a championship season with an
authoritative, front-running victory in the GI Malibu S. In
defeating ‘TDN Rising Star’ Marking (Bernardini), Runhappy
became the first horse based outside of California to win the
race since Run Man Run defeated Artax in 1998 and just the
third to accomplish the feat in the last 30 years.
With regular rider Edgar Prado sidelined via injury,
Runhappy–controversially returned to trainer Laura Wohlers
following his last-out success in the GI Breeders’ Cup Sprint at
Keeneland Oct. 31–was sent to the front by Gary Stevens, who
kept the $200,000 Keeneland September graduate a few paths
off the rail, daring Jose Lezcano atop Marking to either take the
risk of being trapped inside the pacesetter or being consigned to
a wider trip than desired. The Godolphin runner would not go
down without a battle, but in the end, Runhappy proved far too
classy, winning for the sixth straight time to lock up an Eclipse
Award while likely garnering support in a few other categories.
“He blows me away,” commented Stevens. “That was only the
second time I’ve sat on him and to get to feel that power coming
into the stretch was awesome. I just want to say ‘thank you’ to
Edgar Prado. Edgar and I had a couple of conversations earlier in
the week when I found out I was going to ride this horse and he
told me quite a few things about him that helped me today. It
was all Runhappy though and he’s an extremely special horse.”

‘ATTHEWIRE’ INDEED IN THE LA BREA One of the leaders of her generation when based in Florida
over the winter, Birdatthewire (Summer Bird) had made two
somewhat lackluster appearances since finishing an even fifth
from a high draw in the GI Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs
May 2. Let go at odds of 10-1 with Hall of Fame jockey Mike
Smith taking over at the controls, the lanky bay filly was slow
into stride and detached from the body of the field in Saturday’s
GI La Brea S. at Santa Anita, but caught the eye on the turn, then
caught pacesetting Hot City Girl (City Zip) to score by a cozy
three-parts of a length. ‘TDN Rising Star’ Cavorting (Bernardini)
sat a perfect trip behind the speed, but couldn’t match strides
late and finished third.

New Graded Stakes Winner for the Leading Turf Sire and Leading Breeders in North America For the third year in a row, Ken and Sarah Ramsey have been the Leading Breeders in America
by earnings, thanks to horses like six-time Graded Stakes Performer Charming Kitten who notched his first Graded Stakes victory in the W.L. McKnight (G3) at Gulfstream.
An earner of over $800,000, the Ramsey Farm homebred is one of over 30 Stakes Performers in 2015 for Kitten’s Joy, the #1 Turf Sire for the third year in a row, with more than
twice Medaglia d’Oro’s turf earnings, who ranks second.

quarter pole and kicked away to score by 1 3/4 lengths.
CHARMING KITTEN MAKES THE GRADE 9He has knocked on the door on several occasions, but the door
finally opened Saturday for Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s Charming
Kitten (Kitten’s Joy) in the GIII W. L. McKnight H. at Gulfstream.
‘ESPON’-ENTIALLY BEST IN LA PREVOYANTE 10The outside post in a field of 12 runners for Saturday’s GIII La

Espony (Fr) (Vespone {Ire}), who once again led past every pole.

Given his early education by trainer Chuck Simon, Runhappy
was conditioned to Wohlers to a green, but sensational Turfway
maiden victory two days shy of a year ago that had social media
abuzz, but the hysteria was relatively short-lived, as he was
bumped hard at the start of the GIII Lecomte S. Jan. 17 and
showed some early speed before dropping away tamely to finish
better than 21 lengths adrift of International Star (Fusaichi
Pegasus) in ninth. The bay returned in flying form off a six-
month absence and now under the tutelage of Maria Borell,
with daylight allowance scores at Ellis Park July 7 and at Indiana
Grand July 31 before announcing himself really and truly with an
staggering four-length victory after a slow break in the GI King’s
Bishop S. at Saratoga Aug. 29 at odds of 11-1. Cont. p4

He blew the start again when next seen in Keeneland’s GIII
Phoenix S. Oct. 2, but he managed to overcome that faux pas, a
sloppy main track and his saddle slipping to register a 1 3/4-
length success. While many thought that the abundance of
speed signed on to his outside in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint could
prove his undoing, he was instead
content to sit a stalking trip while deep
and raced by the likes of Private Zone
(Macho Uno) for a 3/4-length success.
No winner of the Sprint had managed to
follow up in the Malibu, but that all
changed in the span of 81 seconds
Saturday afternoon.
After breaking like a ‘Quarter horse’ in
Stevens’s words, Runhappy scampered
to a clear early advantage as Marking
tried his best to keep up and the
opening couple of furlongs were posted
in :22.62, a canter for a horse capable of
going much quicker. Sensing he lacked the gas to get through to
the inside of the front-runner, Lezcano guided Marking off heels
and to the outside, but that brief momentum loss allowed
Stevens and Runhappy to expand on their advantage, despite a
more taxing internal quarter in :22.19.
Kept busy by Stevens from there, Runhappy cut the corner
into the lane under hand urging and kept up his relentless gallop
to the line while receiving two turndowns on his right shoulder.
Marking was a gallant second from Lord Nelson, who covered
ground and kept on well for third.
“It didn’t surprise me the way he ran today,” said Wohlers.
“He’s been training well even though
he’s been doing some crazy stuff in the
mornings, it’s just because he just wants
to stand around and do what he wants
to do. We let him get away with that at
the training center. Maybe we have to
be a little stricter with him, but right
now, he really enjoys taking his time
looking around. This is a very new
environment for him.”
Wohlers indicated that Runhappy
would let down on a Texas farm for
about two months and that the first
main objective of 2016 would be the GI Met Mile H. in New
York, with a possible prep prior to that. Such a plan would likely
preclude a trip to Dubai for the G1 Golden Shaheen at the end
of March, but owner McIngvale is focused on a return trip to the
Golden State about 10 months down the road. Cont. p5

A maiden winner in four tries as a juvenile, Birdatthewire
upset the seven-furlong GII Forward Gal S. to the tune of 12-1
Jan. 24, then turned in a strong anti-bias effort when a deep-
closing neck second to Ekati’s
Phaeton (Tale of Ekati) in the
GII Davona Dale S. going
Gulfstream’s one-turn mile
Feb. 21. The filly got an ideal
set-up when running out a
1 1/4-length victrix of the
GII Gulfstream Park Oaks
Mar. 28, but she failed to
reproduce that effort from
the 13 hole on Kentucky Oaks day, picking off a few rivals late en
route to a fifth-place effort. Given six months to mature,
Birdatthewire resumed as the 7-5 favorite in the one-mile
GII Chilukki S. at Churchill Downs Nov. 7, but was off slowly and
beat just two rivals home in fifth. Returned to two turns for the
GII Falls City H. Nov. 26, she took a bump at the break and
rallied past a few to round out the superfecta as the 2-1 choice.
Drawn in gate one here, Birdatthewire was again tardy at the
off and raced in a detached last early on as Hot City Girl set an
honest pace in advance of GIII L. A. Woman S. upsetter Ben’s
Duchess (Munnings) as Cavorting took advantage of her low
draw and raced a couple of lengths off the tail of Hot City Girl.
The front-runner continued to bowl along, mostly unchallenged,
and things looked very positive for her as the half went up in a
moderate :45.35. The blaze-faced chestnut turned them,
pinched a break and looked on her way to victory, but
Birdatthewire, the only of the fillies to be making any sort of late
impact, found her best stride nearing the lane, was steered out
to the center of the Santa Anita main track and was along in the
waning strides while covering 33 feet (about 3 3/4 lengths)
more than the runner-up. Cavorting stayed on at one pace for
third. It was the second California win from four non-Breeders’
Cup runners for trainer Dale Romans in the last five years
(Dullahan, 2012 GI Pacific Classic).
“Before the race I thought that we might have a tough time
getting there in time, since she’s such a late runner and it’s
seven furlongs; but during the running of the race, we were
already in contention at the half-mile pole!” Smith recollected.
“Dale told me that she likes to run out when she’s making a run
‘so just let her.’ So, as long as she kept catching them, I just kept
letting her run to the outside. Cont. p7

Om rebounded off a near miss in the GI Hollywood Derby last
time out with an impressive score in Santa Anita’s GII Mathis
Brothers Mile Saturday. Breaking sharply from the 10-hole, the
favorite pressed
Acceptance
(Vronsky) from
second through early
fractions of :23.03
and :47.15. Sticking
his nose in front
approaching the far
turn, the chestnut
tugged clear of that
rival in early stretch
and kept on finding to hold the late running Perfectly Majestic at
bay for a solid victory.
"The race set up perfectly for him,” winning conditioner Dan
Hendricks remarked. “He's got the natural speed to be placed
wherever Gary [Stevens] wants. We were either going to the
front or going to sit second today, and it just worked out perfect.
Gary rode him perfectly, the horse ran perfectly and I did an OK
job training him, so I'm happy with how it all turned out.”
The trainer added, "He could run next in the [GI] Kilroe [Mile
Mar. 12] or a race before that [the GII Arcadia Feb. 13]. He's a
very lightly raced horse. He's three years old, his joints are
perfect, he's sound, he's happy and full of energy."
Om’s previous claim to fame was beating Triple Crown winner
American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) when graduating by
7 1/4 lengths second time out over the Del Mar synthetic last
August. Given some time off, the sophomore returned with a
fifth place effort in the San Pedro S. on the main track here
Apr. 12 and found the winner’s circle when switched to the turf
in a local optional claimer May 10. Third back on the dirt in the
GIII Affirmed S. here June 7, he was second when returned to
the sod for Del Mar’s GIII La Jolla H. Aug. 9 and really came into
his own when winning that venue’s GII Del Mar Derby Sept. 6.
Victorious once again in this venue’s GII Twilight Derby Oct. 24,
Om was third to Chiropractor (Kitten’s Joy) by just a half-length
in the Hollywood Derby last time Nov. 28.

Victorious in the race named for his sire at this track in early
2013 and a close third in that’s year’s GI Toyota Blue Grass S.,
the homebred earned his first black-type success in the
inaugural running of the Belmont Gold Cup over two miles last
June, but was sidelined off a seventh in the GI United Nations S.
last July 6. Winner of a Belmont allowance June 20, the dark bay
was second in the restricted Lure S. at the Spa Aug. 8 ahead of a
seventh in that track’s GII Bernard Baruch H. Sept. 7. A running-
on second when stretched back out to this distance for
Keeneland’s GIII Sycamore S. Oct. 15, Charming Kitten was
exiting a sixth in the GIII Red Smith H. at Aqueduct Nov. 15.
Bet down from his 8-1 morning line, Charming Kitten raced in a
share of third early, just to the outside of the ground-saving
Roccia d’Oro (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}) and with cover behind
War Dancer (War Front) as Beyond Smart (Smart Strike) set a
modest tempo on the engine. Junior Alvarado allowed War
Dancer to apply a bit more pressure on Beyond Smart as they
raced with a circuit to travel, but the pace remained steady and
Charming Kitten maintained his stalking position as he tugged
his way to be clearly third, then second at the flank of War
Dancer at the half-mile marker. The Ramsey runner was given
his cue and wrested command just outside the quarter pole, but
he soon had company from Da Big Hoss and Kaigun had crept
into contention from between runners. A wide passage took its
toll on Da Big Hoss as he flattened out a bit, and although Red
Smith runner-up Kaigun loomed a fresh threat in the final eighth
of a mile, Charming Kitten refused to let him by in a very tough
effort.
The winner’s dam produced a Kitten’s Joy colt in 2014, who
has since been exported to England, and a filly by the stallion
earlier this season. She is due to Kitten’s Joy for 2016 as well.

Tough as nails when allowed to dictate on her terms, Goldy
Espony was given a perfectly rated ride by Javier Castellano and
held sway late to record her third graded-stakes victory of 2015.
A Group 3 winner in France when under the care of Henri-Alex
Pantall, the gray filly closed 2014 with a third-place effort in
Keeneland’s GIII Valley View S., then rattled off three
consecutive scores to kick off this campaign, including the July 5
River Memories S. at Belmont and GIII Waya S. at Saratoga, both
over 12 furlongs and both times when allowed to throw down
opening 3/4-mile splits north of 1:16. She stubbed her toe a bit
when last in the Sept. 5 GIII Glens Falls S. at the Spa after being
forced to chase a fast pace set by Maximova, but she got back
on the beam last time with a front-running defeat of stablemate
Danza Cavallo (Fr) (Sunday Break {Jpn}) in Aqueduct’s GIII Long

La Prevoyante H. cont.
Drawn widest in the field, Goldy Espony led soon after the
start and crossed down onto the fence and took them under the
wire for the first time after four furlongs in a very manageable
:50.35. Castellano was able to slacken the pace further still
through the next quarter mile, and despite Maximova enjoying
the run of the race, when Goldy Espony clicked past the midway
point in 1:16.84, the La Prevoyante was over for all intents and
purposes. Well held rounding the turn, she accelerated into a
winning advantage and was never in serious danger. Maximova
came away from the fence and managed to hold on for second
from Rosalind, who endured the toughest trip (+72 feet
according to Trakus) and did well to be third.
“I had a great trip,” the winning jockey commented. “I was
concerned about being so far outside, but she is so quick out of
the gate. She put me in a good spot in the first turn. When she
had the lead on the first turn, I thought she had the race locked
up. She dictated the pace. She was really comfortable on the
lead, just galloping along. It was very impressive the way she ran
today. I don’t think anyone could have beat her the way she ran
today.”

Best Behavior went from former claimer to graded winner
with a victory in Gulfstream’s GIII Sugar Swirl S. early on the
Saturday card. Away well, she pressed from second off the heels
of Dogwood Trail (Awesome of Course), who beat out the fleet-
footed favorite Stonetastic to take control at the break. With the
favorite taking back
hard and forced
into third, Best
Behavior kept the
pressure on
Dogwood Trail
through an opening
quarter in :22.42
and drew even with
that rival on the
backstretch just
before registering a
half in :45.08. Dogwood Trail threw in the towel in the stretch
leaving Best Behavior alone on the front end. Stonestastic
attempted to rally past the bay, but Best Behavior kept on
finding and rolled clear to score.
“I was glad the way [the race] turned out,” winning trainer
Marty Wolfson said. “I told John [Velazquez] that the worst
races for Stonetastic is when you lay on her and he didn’t have
to lay on her. I really liked her at that point. She drew away from
[Stonetastic] at the end.”
Best Behavior was claimed from Frank Calabrese and trainer
Michael Petro for $62,500 by trainer Marty Wolfson and Miller
Racing following an optional claimer win over this strip in August
of last year. Second in the Sky Beauty S. last November in her
first start for these connections, the bay captured the restricted

Toowindytohaulrox, a narrow winner of a $62,500 optional
tagger at Del Mar Aug. 15, held some solid prior form over the
Hillside course, posting a record of 5-1-1-3, respectively. Moved
up to third via disqualification after some late trouble when
crossing the line fourth in the GIII Eddie D. S. here Oct. 3, the
bay entered off a pair of third-place finishes, most recently
completing the trifecta in the 1 1/16-mile GII Seabiscuit H. at Del
Mar Nov. 27. Cutting back in distance for this, he was in no hurry
in the early stages, racing in 11th through a half mile in :44.18.
With Tiago Pereira in the irons, Toowindytohaulrox began to
wind up as they straightened for home and came with a
devastating stretch rally on the extreme outside to outkick his
stablemate in a wild finish. The $1 Phil D’Amato-trained exacta
returned $762.20. “I wanted them to stay outside, ‘Toowindy’
especially,” D’Amato revealed. “He likes to be in the clear.
Anytime he’s got to split horses, he doesn’t like it as much. The
Breeders’ Cup [Turf Sprint] is a possibility. I know he likes this
trip, and he’s just getting his confidence going. He’s getting
better and better with every race.” He continued, “My other
horse ran a big race, too. Coastline got bumped out there,
almost in the grandstand crossing the dirt, and he still came on
strong and only lost by a nose. They both ran huge.”

Steve Moger’s Stormy Lucy (Stormy Atlantic) looks to duplicate
that effort at Santa Anita in Sunday’s GIII Robert J. Frankel S.

score her first win

enters this test off a win at Del Mar last time in the GIII Red
Carpet H. Nov. 21. Victorious in the restricted One Dreamer S. at
Kentucky Downs two starts prior Sept. 19, the Graham Motion
trainee finished fourth in Belmont’s GIII Athenia S. Oct. 17.
Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, Fox Hill Farms’ Glory (Tapit)
started her career on the dirt where she wracked up a record of
6-1-2-1, including a Grade III placing. Switched to the turf two
back, the bay scored back-to-back optional claimer victories,
first sprinting over this course Oct. 1 and then extended to 1
1/16 miles at Del Mar Nov. 7. Returning to the turf for the first
time in over a year is Benjamin Warren’s Warren Veneda
(Affirmative), who captured both the GII Santa Maria S. and GI
Santa Maragarita S. on the main track here last term. Third
behind two-time Eclipse winner Beholder (Henny Hughes) three
back in Del Mar’s GI Clement L. Hirsch S. Aug. 1, the Craig Lewis
pupil was seventh behind that rival next out in the GI Zenyatta S.
Sept. 26. The chestnut was last seen filling that same spot in the
GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff S. at Keeneland Oct. 30. Qatar Racing’s
Peace and War (War Front) also returns to the grass for the first
time since her 2014 European campaign. Trained by Graham
Motion, the bay finished third in the GI Cotillion S. Sept. 19 and
12th in the Distaff before checking in fifth in Aqueduct’s GIII
Comely S. last time Nov. 28.

Since Hollywood Park closed at the
end of 2013, all of California racing
has suffered. Attendance and handle
have declined despite two historic
crops of 3-year-olds and a good
amount of world-class racing. In 2014,
Derby and Preakness winner
California Chrome, champion Shared
Belief, and Breeders’ Cup Classic
winner Bayern made enormous impacts on the national racing
scene. This year, we had the long awaited Triple Crown winner
and California-based American Pharoah, plus Kentucky Derby
second and third place finishers Firing Line and Dortmund.
Throughout this time we have enjoyed the media darling mare
Beholder, whose performance in the Pacific Classic was one for
the ages. California’s horses produced headline-grabbing news
at a national and international level, but our numbers actually
declined. Something must change.
In April of 2013, I wrote a letter outlining my concern for
racing’s future in California from the perspective of a racing
stable that has long been committed to being here. These last
three years have done nothing but strengthen my opinion that
for the good of the industry in the state and the betting public
that supports our purse structure, California racing must be one
circuit. My letter advocated a schedule where Golden Gate
would occupy Hollywood Park’s former dates, with Del Mar and
the NoCal fair circuits racing concurrently in the summer to form
a “super circuit” similar to what we see thrive on the East Coast
today. Golden Gate and Santa Anita would remain open all year
for training. That plan would still work, or could be amended
whereby Santa Anita races three weeks and Golden Gate one
week each month, with both closing when Del Mar and the
NoCal fairs run in the summer.
Instead of working together, the Northern and Southern
California circuits compete for horses and horseplayers. There
are many problems. Los Alamitos hasn’t caught on, and the fall
meet at Del Mar doesn’t compare to their summer meet. Santa
Anita’s turf course has suffered with an unrelenting December-
June schedule. Turf horses get stacked up at the start of Del Mar
and Santa Anita due to no grass racing at Los Alamitos. Golden
Gate operates with a never-ending cycle of poor horses, purses,
and handle. Takeout was increased and there are small fields,
which is a deadly combination. While overall handle and purses
have declined, the restricted California-bred program has
maintained its purse levels. Fewer national stables race in
California today due to lack of opportunity. Santa Anita and Los
Alamitos typically race four days per week, with eight races per
day. Twenty-five percent of these races are restricted to Cal-
breds. California may be the richest state in the country, but
their racing is headed toward regional status. Glen Hill Farm will
not be able race in California much longer if this trend
continues.
With a combined circuit, there are enough horses to race five
days per week, with 9-10 races per day. This move would be
made with the idea of bringing national racing stables back and
restoring California as the premier racing circuit in North
America. California races in areas with enormous wealth and
industry. Del Mar and Santa Anita are world-class racetracks,
and Golden Gate can be as well. Detractors to this plan three
years ago pointed to the current system providing full time jobs;
they complained about increased travel; and that the Northern
California’s handle doesn’t warrant such a risk. I understand the
jobs, but people are naïve to expect long-term employment in a
declining industry. Nearly every horseman deals with constant
travel outside of California. As for handle, I believe the wealth
and population centered in the Bay Area would bet huge dollars
if Southern California’s trainers, jockeys, and horses raced there.

An aggressive marketing effort must be directed at the new
entrepreneurs in the area who have demonstrated that they
have enormous disposable income looking for a home as
evidenced by their investment in professional sports teams and
other sporting endeavors.
The handle of a combined circuit will certainly be greater than
today’s mess. Hong Kong produces greater handle than the
entire United States with fewer than 90 days of racing. They bet
on quality racing there with fields full of good horses, which is
what a combined Northern and Southern California circuit
would create. A bold move like this must be done before there
isn’t an industry to save in California.
Craig Bernick has been President and Chief Operating Officer of
Glen Hill Farm since 2008. The farm has approximately 35
broodmares in Ocala, FL and 30 horses in training in Southern
California, Florida, and the Mid-Atlantic. Glen Hill Farm raced
such horses as Relaunch, Convenience and One Dreamer and,
more recently, Banned, Marketing Mix, Pontchatrain, Diversy
Harbor, and Chiropractor. He is a member of the TOBA Executive
Committee, and a board member of Breeders Cup and the
Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance. He is an officer of the Lavin

BREEDING PLANS:MOYGLARE STUD
by Chris McGrath
And so the cycle starts afresh. Even as Free Eagle (Ire) (High
Chaparral {Ire}) retires, the stud that raised him is finalizing the
matings that will extend his own family tree and, with any luck,
sustain its broader traditions of excellence on and off the track.
True, his final start proved a huge anti-climax for Dermot Weld,
his trainer, and the team at Moyglare Stud. Sent off favorite for
the G1 Longines Hong Kong Cup earlier this month, Free Eagle
dropped right out to finish last--a shadow of the horse that
toughed things out so pluckily in the G1 Prince of Wales's S. at
Royal Ascot in June. But while no obvious explanation at first
suggested itself for so tame an effort, it was a different story as
soon as he returned to Ireland.
"He was a very sick horse for a week after he got back,"
Moyglare's Fiona Craig explained. "I'd say he must have been
incubating it going into the race, and that the stress of that
brought it on."
Free Eagle has responded well to treatment, however, and will
now be transferred to his new home at the Irish National Stud,
where he starts at a fee of i20,000.
"It's a shame they weren't able to have him there a bit earlier,"
Craig said. "But I know quite a few people have been in to see
him at Rosewell, and seen what a bonny horse he is. I think
they're happy with the response they've been getting: all the
shares are sold, and I believe plenty of people are planning to
use both nominations themselves." cont. p2
>SHIP= LOOKS FOR MORE ARIMA >GOLD= To say that Gold Ship (Jpn) (Stay Gold {Jpn}) has a cultfollowing--not just in his homeland but from all corners of theglobe--would be an understatement of monumentalproportions. The famously obstreperous gray colt, making thefinal start of a career that saw him win the event as a 3-year-oldin 2012 before finishing third the last two seasons, will try to goout a winner in Sunday=s G1 Arima Kinen before a six-figurecrowd at Nakayama. Notoriously tough to handle, but as talented as they come ifhis mind is on the task at hand, Gold Ship narrowly defeatedsubsequent G1 Melbourne Cup favorite Fame Game (Jpn)(Heart=s Cry {Jpn}) by a narrow margin in the G1 Tenno Sho(Spring) over 3200 meters May 3. But he went straight onto hishind legs as the gates were sprung for the G1 Takarazuka KinenJune 28 and never reached serious contention, finishing 15th ofthe 16 runners as the 9-10 chalk. cont. p5

Breeding Plans: Moyglare Stud cont.
The Haefner family's long-serving breeding advisor is
recommending a couple of their own mares to support the
young stallion, both She's Our Mark (GB) (Ishiguru) and I'm
Yours (GB) (Invincible Spirit{Ire}) being stakes winners.
"But of course he couldn't be entertained as a possibility for
probably a third of our broodmare band," Craig said. "Because
so many of them are related to him."
That is just an extreme
version of the perennial
challenge facing the Haefner
stud: how to maintain diversity
in a gene pool saturated,
especially in Ireland, by such
dominant sirelines as Sadler's
Wells and Danehill.
"It's an absolute nightmare,
and getting worse all the time,"
Craig said candidly. "That's why some of our matings will
sometimes seem a bit odd: you find yourself with no choice
sometimes but to fling a mare at something a bit random. If you
get a filly, after all, one day you'll need to be able to breed them
to something. People are frantically looking for an outcross.
That's why losing Scat Daddy (Johannesburg) the other day was
such a disaster for Coolmore; and that's also why Dark Angel
(Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) is getting so many mares even at 60
grand."
The search for balance has prompted Moyglare to invest in
fresh blood--notably Discreet Marq (Discreet Cat), a GI Del Mar
Oaks winner bought for $2.4 million at Fasig-Tipton's Kentucky
sale in November 2014. Out of a Marquetry mare, her first
partner will be Galileo (Ire) (Sadler's Wells {Ire}).
"She gives us Storm Cat on top of Mr Prospector," Craig
explained. "She has tons of speed in her pedigree and was a
top-class racemare at seven furlongs to a mile. Most of our
mares don't have loads of speed, and obviously Storm Cat works
very well back into Galileo."
Much the same logic applied, in 2012, to the acquisition of
Switch (Quiet American) at the equivalent sale for $4.3 million.
Having so far produced a Galileo filly and a Dansili (GB)
(Danehill) colt, she is due to Galileo in May and then returns to
Coolmore's champion. Then there is Es Que (GB) (Inchinor {GB}),
bought privately in foal to Galileo, a complete outcross as the
daughter of a Bering (GB) (Arctic Tern) mare. Having delivered
her "lovely chestnut filly" by Galileo, she is now in foal to Oasis
Dream (GB) (Green Desert) and scheduled to visit Invincible
Spirit (Ire) (Green Desert) next year. Even Terrific (Ire) (Galileo
{Ire}), another recent acquisition, was singled out for her
freedom from Danehill. In foal to War Front (Danzig), she will
duly be able to visit Dansili for her new owners. cont. p3

Breeding Plans: Moyglare Stud cont.
"You don't buy a mare like that without having a plan in place
already," Craig said. "And she was bought very much with that
mating in mind."
But the quest for equilibrium, at Moyglare, is not merely
genetic. The idea, after all, is to breed runners--not yearlings
with commercial pedigrees.
"The physical match is vital," Craig confirmed. "Many of these
mares were with us as foals. We knew what their dams looked
like, often their great-grandmothers as well. It doesn't always
work, but there are traits we know to expect. With young
mares, you do need to see the foal before you can finally
commit them to a stallion. Until you see the foal, you're working
blind: it might be an elephant, or it might be a dainty little
thing."
A case in point is the talented, Unaccompanied (Ire) (Danehill
Dancer {Ire}), now in Kentucky and expecting her first foal by
Distorted Humor (Forty Niner). She will proceed to Elusive
Quality (Gone West). Unaccompanied is one of 10 mares--out of
a total of 40 to be bred in 2016--tracing to Talking Picture (Speak
John), the champion American 2-year-old filly of 1973. Others
include Talking Picture's
granddaughter Polished
Gem (Ire) (Danehill), the
dam of Free Eagle, who is
due to Galileo in April and
provisionally set to return
to him thereafter.
Sapphire (Ire) (Medicean
{GB}), Polished Gem's first
foal and herself a
Group 2 winner, is heading the same way once delivering her
foal by Kingman (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}).
Another granddaughter of Talking Picture is Utterly Heaven
(Ire) (Danehill), whose son, Forgotten Rules (Ire) (Nayef), was
third in the G1 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot last summer. Utterly
Heaven is due to Dubawi (Ire) (Dubai Millennium {GB}) and then
has a date with Raven's Pass (Elusive Quality).
The second American bedrock of Moyglare was Grenzen
(Grenfall), whose daughters produced international stars Media
Puzzle (Theatrical {Ire}), Refuse To Bend (Ire) (Sadler's Wells)
and Go And Go (GB) (Be My Guest). Her line is represented,
among others, by Society Hostess (Seeking The Gold).
"She's one fast mare we have had," Craig noted. "A very good
racemare, beaten a nose in a Group 1, and she started off with
quite a nice Henrythenavigator (Ire) (Kingmambo) who was
stakes-placed before unfortunately fracturing a leg, and has a
Frankel (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) yearling just gone into training."
Currently in foal to Sea The Stars (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}),
Society Hostess will visit Fastnet Rock (Aus) (Danehill).
Another Moyglare matriarch, In Anticipation (Ire) (Sadler's
Wells), meanwhile, remains very ably represented by her
daughter Irresistible Jewel (Ire) (Danehill). Herself a winner of
the G2 Ribblesdale S., Irresistible Jewel produced Princess
Highway (Street Cry {Ire}) to win the same race by six lengths in
2012, and has two other group winners besides.
"Irresistible Jewel looks like a middleweight hunter, with a
plain old head," Craig said. "But she has produced three very
good horses. It would be nice if the Dubawi foal she is carrying
turns out to be a filly, and the idea is to send her back to him
afterwards."
Princess Highway, for
her part, is in foal to
Medaglio d'Oro (El Prado
{Ire}) in Kentucky, and
next returns to War Front,
sire of her first daughter.
Her half-sister, Mad
About You (Ire) (Indian
Ridge {GB}), also has a
glamorous booking in the form of Oasis Dream (GB) (Green
Desert). cont. p4

Majestic Silver (Ire) (Linamix {Fr}) is another granddaughter ofIn Anticipation quickly developing a strong profile. "She was mad as a hatter, and unraced as a result," Craigrecalled. "But she was also the most superb athlete, who justfloated over the ground, and a half-sister to a Group 1-placedmare in Profound Beauty (Ire) (Danehill). Everyone said get ridof her, but I thought that if we could get her movement, you'dget a racehorse." Sure enough, Carla Bianca (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) is a dual groupwinner for Weld and now hunting American black-type withChristophe Clement; Joailliere (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) won her debutby seven lengths this spring before getting jarred up in the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas, and also stays in training; and TrueSolitaire (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}) was beaten a short head in theG2 Beresford S. in September. Majestic Silver, due to deliver asibling to Carla Bianca in February, is pencilled in for Sea TheStars. As for Profound Beauty, she goes to Dalakhani (Ire)(Darshaan {GB}). Having expanded to 160 at its numerical peak, Moyglare nowhas 117 horses divided between its racing and breeding rostersand the intention is eventually to get that number down toaround 100. One who has now served her time is Lady Luck (Ire)(Kris {GB}), the dam of Casual Conquest (Ire) (Hernando {Fr}).Having failed to get in foal, and rising 20, she has been retired.Needless to say, she will be looked after as she deserves, withtwo daughters on the stud ready to take over the baton:another new start, another cycle.
ANJAAL RETIRED TO RATHASKER STUD Anjaal (GB) (Bahamian Bounty {GB}--Ballymore Celebre {Ire},by Peintre Celebre), a winner of the G2 July S. at Newmarket as
a juvenile in Sheikh Hamdan=sShadwell silks, has beenretired to Rathasker Stud inIreland for 2016. A winner atsecond asking after beingpurchased by Peter and RossDoyle for 105,000gns frombreeder Carmel Stud atTattersalls October, Anjaalwas also third in the G2 Lennox S. and ran fourth

>Ship= Looks for More Arima >Gold= cont.
Though the task was always going to be a tough one returning
to action in the G1 Japan Cup Nov. 29, Gold Ship was
nevertheless the 7-2 second choice, but faltered late to finish a
midpack 10th, about two lengths behind Shonan Pandora (Jpn)
(Deep Impact {Jpn}).
He was the leading
vote-getter in this
popularity contest for
the second straight
year.
ATo be able to ride a
horse this popular, this
supported in his final
race is an absolute
honor for a jockey,@
commented Hiroyuki Uchida. AThe norm has never applied with
him. He=s still full of energy and the potential he=s always
showed is incredible.@
Since being stretched out in trip, Albert (Jpn) (Admire Don
{Jpn}) has been unstoppable and looks to make it five on the
bounce Sunday afternoon. A winner over 2000 meters at
Sapporo Aug. 30, he took 12-furlong tests in the lower grades at
Tokyo Oct. 10 and at Kyoto Nov. 14 before recording a
breakthrough pattern score in the G2 Stayers= S. going 18 panels
at this venue Dec. 6.
AHe's got good body balance and didn't let up through the
entire workout. He's in the same form he was in for his last
race,@ commented trainer Noriyuki Hori. AHis previous start was
a marathon but didn't take long to get his wind back after the
race. [Winning jockey Ryan] Moore made sure the race didn't
take too much out of him. I really think it's up for grabs, which is
a huge reason why we decided to throw our hat into the ring.
We're going into the race with great expectations."
With the Japan Cup heroine taking a pass, Last Impact (Jpn)
(Deep Impact {Jpn}) will represent the form of the race for his
sire, who won this in 2006. Fourth to Gold Ship in the Tenno
Sho, the 5-year-old was only 12th to Lovely Day (Jpn) (King
Kamehameha {Jpn}) in the autumn running of the Tenno Sho
Nov. 1, but flashed home along the rail in the Japan Cup to just
miss in second, with Lovely Day third as the favorite.
Marialite (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) looks to be in with an
upset chance. Fifth to Shonan Pandora in the 2200-meter G2 All
Comers S. over this surface Sept. 27, she hit the line a neck to
the good of Nuovo Record (Jpn) (Heart=s Cry {Jpn}) in the
G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup Nov. 15, with Rouge Buck (Jpn)
(Manhattan Cafe {Jpn}) further back in fourth. Nuovo Record
returned to complete a Japanese 1-2 in the G1 Longines Hong
Kong Cup at Sha Tin Dec. 13.
The Arima Kinen is easily the world=s biggest betting race. In
2014, some -39 billion (over $322 million) was wagered on the
race alone. To put that in some context, the 2014 and 2015
Breeders= Cup attracted a combined $315 million.

STORM THE STARS BOUND FOR OZ Storm The Stars (Sea The Stars {Ire}), third in Golden Horn
(GB) (Cape Cross {Ire})=s G1 Investec Derby and runner-up to
that luminary=s stablemate Jack Hobbs (GB) (Halling) in the Irish
equivalent, will join the string of Chris Waller in Australia,
reported Racing Post. Trained by William Haggas for Sheikh
Juma Dalmook Al Maktoum during his Northern Hemisphere
campaigns, Storm the Stars won the G2 Great Voltigeur S. after
his Classic placings and was also third in the G1 Grand Prix de
Paris. He ended his season with a fourth in the G1 St Leger S. at
York Sept. 12.
AIt was a mutual agreement, I was very much for it as well,@
Haggas told Racing Post. AIt=s an exciting venture for the owner,
it=s his first horse out there. Storm The Stars is a very talented,
tough and sound horse and I think he=ll do really well there. I
think he could be a champion and I hope he is.@

Sha Tin Nightcap Should Hold Clues:
With the beginning of the Hong Kong 4-year-old series just a
month away, a handful of the more prominent names are set to
take their spots in a Class 2 handicap over 1400 meters Sunday
evening at Sha Tin.
Carrying top weight of 133 pounds is the Ricky Yiu-trained
Blizzard (Aus) (Starcraft {NZ}), who got the better of the heavily
favored
Thewizardofoz
(Aus) (Redoute=s
Choice {Aus})
over this course
and distance Oct.
25, but was no
better than 10th
in a contentious
Class 1 at the trip
Nov. 14. The
chestnut sat a
wide trip without
cover that day,
but a post-race exam revealed a significant amount of blood in
his trachea, so that effort may well be a toss. Gerald Mosse rides
from a tricky gate in 12.
Thewizardofoz was the talk of the town at the tail end of last
season, with three wins from as many runs, but he=s lost some
of the luster this term and was handed a second straight defeat
at odds-on last time, finishing an excuse-free third. A fifth in a
recent barrier trial at Happy Valley--with Blizzard third--was
more workmanlike than it was encouraging, but Joao Moreira
jumps back in the saddle Sunday.
Hero Look (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), this year=s G3 Premio
Parioli winner, made an auspicious beginning to his Hong Kong
career when rattling home to be second, a spot ahead of
Thewizardofoz, in the aforementioned Class 2 Nov. 29.
Consort (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), one of the more expensive
imports this season, makes his first local appearance. Formerly
trained by Sir Michael Stoute for Highclere Racing, the gray
annexed this year=s Listed Heron S. at Sandown in May before
finishing three lengths= third behind Gleneagles (Ire) (Galileo
{Ire}) in the G1 St James=s Palace S. at Royal Ascot. Consort, now
owned by Pan Sutong and trained by John Moore, was last seen
finishing runner-up in Newbury=s Listed Steventon S. July 18. Zac
Purton has the call. Click for the HKJC.com PPs.
