MANAGING – FOOD WASTE

23

Worldwide, about one-third of all food produced, gets

lost or wasted in food production and consumption

systems.

At the same time almost one billion people do not have

enough to eat.

Food loss is occurring at the production stages –

harvesting, processing and distribution – while food

waste typically takes place at the retailer and consumer

end of the supply chain.

Therefore, reducing food waste would contribute

significantly towards attaining sustainable food systems,

hence addressing social, economic, and environmental

issues. This is an area for Agriculture Transformation!!!!!

Page 24: AGRICULTURE AND FOOD SECURITY IN SADC REGION … · AGRICULTURE AND FOOD SECURITY IN SADC REGION 22 APRIL, 2016 Prof. Timothy Simalenga ... GDP growth % Angola 21.5 1,246,700 126,774

Challenges: Managing Waste

Inequality in food distribution - food

wastage and food sufficiency

Why Transformation Agenda

25

We need

• Innovative research systems

• Transforming Agriculture and Research

results as Business

– Sustainable production systems

– To Realign how we work together

– To Link agriculture between

professionalism, policy and business

Page 26: AGRICULTURE AND FOOD SECURITY IN SADC REGION … · AGRICULTURE AND FOOD SECURITY IN SADC REGION 22 APRIL, 2016 Prof. Timothy Simalenga ... GDP growth % Angola 21.5 1,246,700 126,774

Agriculture Transformation Agenda

less favourable environment

We Need: Harness knowledge for local problems

… AND…

DOING AGRICULTURAL TRANSFORMATION AND

INNOVATION AS “UNUSUAL BUSINESS”

FOCUS MORE ON:A systemic and organizationally process for:

Acquiring knowledge;

Organizing knowledge; and

Putting knowledge (from the global

treasure) into use to facilitate innovation

We Need: Harness knowledge for local problems

Page 31: AGRICULTURE AND FOOD SECURITY IN SADC REGION … · AGRICULTURE AND FOOD SECURITY IN SADC REGION 22 APRIL, 2016 Prof. Timothy Simalenga ... GDP growth % Angola 21.5 1,246,700 126,774

… So the “Agriculture transformation Agenda” should

focus more on …

Knowledge prospecting, that is:

• the searching,

• identifying,

• adapting, and

• diffusing knowledge and technologies from all sources

We Need: Harness knowledge for local problems

Page 32: AGRICULTURE AND FOOD SECURITY IN SADC REGION … · AGRICULTURE AND FOOD SECURITY IN SADC REGION 22 APRIL, 2016 Prof. Timothy Simalenga ... GDP growth % Angola 21.5 1,246,700 126,774
