Townsend Primary School Curriculum Policy

At Townsend Primary School we believe that all pupils in the school should have access to all areas of the curriculum. This policy should be read in conjunction with the Teaching and Learning policy. Our curriculum overview for each subject can be found on our website and are also attached to this policy. At Townsend Primary School we offer a curriculum that is comprehensive, inclusive and varied which builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills of all children, as they progress through each Key Stage, whatever their starting points. Intent We aim for all of our children to access learning, through a variety of teaching styles, which encompasses interactive, relevant and hands on experiences. We equip our children with an awareness of themselves as individuals and to use learned strategies to keep themselves ‘safe’. Visits from external ‘groups’ like the NSPCC and Gangs Against Violence, support us to further enhance pupils’ life skills. We have designed a curriculum that enables children to have a positive and enjoyable educational experience. We want children to see the value of education, talk positively to others about their experiences, build resilience, see failure as an opportunity for development and develop a positive attitude towards learning. We believe in providing the children with unique experiences that stretch beyond the requirements of the national curriculum. We provide regular trips that enhance and embed children’s learning as well as creating curiosity. We run ‘Enabling Enterprise’ projects at least twice a year that allow the children to develop key life skills such as problem solving, aiming high, leading, being creative and staying positive. Our children speak highly of these projects. We enrich our curriculum by providing children eye opening opportunities such as ukulele lessons, resulting in performing at the Royal Festival Hall. The inclusion of animals to our community and curriculum has motivated and developed confidence in some of our children. The children thoroughly enjoy working with our school dog and recently took responsibility for looking after chicks that we sourced from a local farm. We are always keen to become involved in local projects and recently participated in Southwark’s ‘Beat the Street’ initiative, encouraging our children to become more active. We believe in ensuring that our pupils receive teaching and experiences, appropriate to their age and ability. We consider it important to give children the opportunity to learn how to handle and use a wide range of tools and materials skilfully and to provide them with quality experiences that will expose them to the diversity of wider society. Implementation The curriculum in the Early Years Foundation is flexible and is based on the children’s interests and the information that parents provide about their children. Teaching and high-quality provision ensures that children can progress towards meeting the Early Learning goals. We provide children with an indoor and outdoor classroom with regular access to both. The National Curriculum for year 1 -6 is designed around a subject based approach and we make connections and links between topics where possible. We have been working on ensuring that more able children are challenged further in their learning. Our skillful teaching staff work hard to meet the needs of children who find aspects of their learning more difficult so that they are appropriately supported to experience success.

Page 4: Agreed Whole School Policy Curriculum Policy...Townsend Primary School Curriculum Policy At Townsend Primary School we believe that all pupils in the school should have access to all

We deliver daily phonics by using the Letters and Sounds program and have developed our own in school reading scheme. Specialist teachers teach music, Spanish, Judo, swimming and a sports coach teaches Physical Education. Subject leaders are given training and opportunities to keep developing their own subject knowledge, skills and understanding so they can support curriculum development and their colleagues throughout the school. Impact The children’s books show progression within their year group and across year groups in the school. We are working on developing subject progression maps to show progression in skills as children move through the school. Rigorous monitoring, increasing attainment and good levels of progress across year groups support the good impact of the curriculum. Subject Time Allocation We dedicate adequate time to the teaching of each subject to ensure that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fulfilled. Curriculum teaching time can be planned as continuous study throughout the term, or as blocks of study. Planning and Progression The curriculum overview for Yr 1-6 has been developed through a process of collaboration between staff and subsequently approved by governors.

We follow schemes of work for Geography, History, Art, DT, RE and Computing. These are modified and adapted based on the needs of the class. For all other subjects, teachers produce half-termly plans. Subject leaders with the Leadership team, are responsible for ensuring that these are implemented and monitored.

We are committed to following the programmes of study as required by the National Curriculum 2014. Our curriculum is designed around a subject based approach and we make connections and links between topics/subjects where possible.

We are working on developing subject progression maps to show progression in skills as children move through the school. Monitoring and Evaluation of the Curriculum Why Monitor? - In order to ensure that our curriculum impacts on children’s learning we believe that it is important that we monitor regularly. The purpose of monitoring procedures is to establish a common professional dialogue amongst staff within which individual needs are recognised and supported. How we Monitor – The Leadership team devise a monitoring cycle every term which comprises of lesson observations, book looks, learning walks, environment walks and pupil voice. The monitoring process involves subject leaders. Monitoring always follows up previous targets set for individual teachers. Monitoring is also a way of evaluating the impact of new initiatives introduced into the school. The monitoring cycle outlines the regularity of monitoring but this may be adapted based on individual performance. Teachers are notified the day before monitoring will take place.

Page 5: Agreed Whole School Policy Curriculum Policy...Townsend Primary School Curriculum Policy At Townsend Primary School we believe that all pupils in the school should have access to all

Supportive feedback from monitoring is an essential part of the monitoring process, and issues relating to staff development are acted upon. We understand the need to periodically review our curriculum by considering the views of children, parents and staff and have systems in place in order to do this. We have overhauled our RE curriculum this academic year and have been working with another local primary school to develop our science provision using resources from the Association of Science Education (ASE). Assessment We have solid and rigorous assessment procedures in place for English and Maths. We make a formal assessment judgement of each child in Maths and English at the end of a term using Southwark’s performance indicators. These judgements are moderated and validated through internal moderation, inter school moderation and moderation from external subject consultants. We have been working on developing our assessment procedures across the curriculum and our current focus is on Science, History and Religious Education. Resources Each term, the Subject Leaders ensure that the resources required are ordered and made available to the class teacher. CPD Subject Leaders and class teachers access training and support and use this to support the implementation of the subject across the school. Regular staff meetings are used to discuss various aspects of the curriculum and ensure consistency of approach and standards.
