PRINCE GEORGE HERITAGE COMMISSION

Minutes of the City of Prince George Heritage Commission meeting, held in the 5th Floor Board Room, 1100 Patricia Boulevard, Prince George, BC, on May 24, 2018 at 12:00 p.m. PRESENT: Ms. Alisha Rubadeau (Vice-Chair); Mr. Derek Plummer; Ms. Meredith Bogle; Ms. Darcie Smith; Ms. Toni Carlton; and Ms. Mia Reimer.

IN ATTENDANCE: Ms. Cheryl Livingstone-Leman, Community Coordinator/Staff Liaison, Mr. Rob van Adrichem, Director of External Relations; and Mr. Tristin Deveau, Planner /Staff Liaison. A.

Commencement The meeting was called to order at 12:00 p.m.

B. Adoption of Agenda

Moved by Ms. Carlton, seconded by Ms. Plummer, that the May 24, 2018 Prince George Heritage Commission meeting agenda be amended to include items D.6: Seniors Fair at BCNE, and E.3: Artifact Box, and that the agenda BE ADOPTED AS AMENDED.

Moved by Ms. Smith, seconded by Mr. Plummer, that the minutes of the April 26, 2018 meeting of the Prince George Heritage Commission, BE ADOPTED.

New Business Presentation from Rob van Adrichem, Director of External Relations Mr. van Adrichem presented on the history of the Wood Innovation and Design Centre (WIDC), outlining the importance of the building to the history of Prince George. Mr. van Adrichem requested consideration for installation of a Heritage Interpretive Sign to be developed regarding the evolution of the wood industry in Prince George and using the WIDC building as an example of wood innovation and pride in the community’s forest industry. Installation of this sign could be placed in the new City Centre Square park, which will be located adjacent to the WIDC building. Ms. Livingstone-Leman and Mr. Deveau will meet with City Parks staff regarding the design of the new park and whether or not an interpretive sign such as this will fit the park concept. Active Living Guide Discussion commenced regarding the advertisement for the Commission to be placed in the Fall/Winter Active Living Guide. Ms. Livingstone-Leman will draft a new advertisement and will circulate to Ms. Rubadeau, Ms. Smith and Mr. Deveau for edits/proof-reading. Heritage Sign Maintenance

Ms. Livingstone-Leman requested committee members to email photos of vandalism or graffiti noticed on Heritage sign which she will use to facilitate repairs and/or removal of graffiti with appropriate City Staff. Downtown Walking Tour – Update Brochure Discussion commenced regarding an update to the Downtown Walking Tour brochure. Up to four hundred dollars ($400) has been allocated in the 2018 Prince George Heritage Commission Work Plan towards the design and printing of the Downtown Walking Tour brochure.

Moved by Ms. Rubadeau, seconded by Ms. Reimer, that the Commission APPROVES the redesign and printing of the Downtown Walking Tour to be completed by the Prince George Public Library within the previously allocated budget of four hundred dollars ($400).

Carried Unanimously There’s Life in These Old Houses Discussion commenced regarding some out of date information within the remaining “There’s Life in These Old Houses” books. The Commission discussed applying to the inside front cover, a sticker highlighting the changes in the book’s content. Ms. Livingstone-Leman will determine the number of books remaining in stock and report back to the Commission. Seniors Day at BCNE Discussion commenced regarding the hosting of a display booth at Seniors Day at the British Columbia Northern Exhibition (BCNE) scheduled for Thursday, August 16, 2018. Ms. Rubadeau, Ms. Carlson and Ms. Carlton have agreed to attend the booth throughout the day. Ms. Livingstone-Leman will register for the book and Ms. Rubadeau will organize the display and gift basket draw prize.

Old Business Heritage Register – Public Nomination (2688 Inlander Street) Using the Heritage Register Evaluation Form, the Commission evaluated the public nomination for 2688 Inlander Street to be included on the Prince George Heritage Register. Discussion commenced regarding the use of the form. Mr. Deveau indicated evaluation of all the Heritage Register tools will be conducted in 2019.

Moved by Ms. Rubadeau, seconded by Mr. Plummer, that the Commission APPROVES a Statement of Significance be completed regarding the property located at 2688 Inlander Street .

Carried Unanimously Ms. Rubadeau will contact the owner of the property to arrange for a tour of the house and property this summer. Heritage Heroes Certificate Ms. Livingstone-Leman presented a suggestion for three (3) Heritage Heroes Certificates regarding:

“… excellence in the restoration and protection of historic buildings in Prince George”; “… excellence in heritage advocacy, education and awareness in Prince George”; and “… excellence in the preservation or restoration of significant natural spaces or features.”

Ms. Livingstone-Leman will prepare drafts of the certificates for review and approval at the June Heritage Commission meeting. Artifact Box Discussion commenced regarding the artifact box representing school days in Prince George to be filled by the Retired Teachers Association. Mr. Kris Nellis, Retired Teachers Association, will attend the June Heritage Commission meeting to present a mock-up of the artifact box for the Commission consideration and approval.

F. Information Items Ms. Livingstone-Leman will provide to the Commission members whose terms began in 2018, copies of the 2010 Heritage Context Study for Prince George and a copy of the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada.

Interpr�ive Signs & Downtown Walking TourThe Prince George Heritage Commission has installed over 25 heritage interpretive signs throughout the downtown core and in a number of city parks.
