Dear:
1would like to invite your group to have a role in Carmel-by -the -Sea s centennial in 2016.
The
anniversary year should be filled
with
many types of differing events commemorati
ng
the 100
h
birthday
of
our incorporation as a City on October 31, 1916. I appointed a Centennial Committee comprised
of
Sue
McCloud, Barbara Livingston and Merv Sutton to develop plans for our anniversary and you may
be
working with them already. The committee held a public meeting in February to solici t ideas and
valuable input from
the
community and I want to thank the committee members for
their
efforts to
date and look forward to their continuing role
in
making 2016 a great year for Carmel -by -the -Sea.
If your group is not already doing
so
, the Council would ask
that
your group meet and discuss what
contribution your organization would like
to
contribute
to
events in 2016 which will
be
a year-long city
wide celebration. The Council would like its boards, commissions and committees to work
with
it, the
Centennial Commi
ttee
and all communi ty groups in having an active role in host ing events, displaying
our history and presenting projects
for
2016.
Your creative ideas will
be
a central part
of
our celebration. We would ask that you or a representative
of your group bring your ideas and or projects and programs to a City Council wo rkshop on Monday,
July 6th
at
5:30pm to pr
esent
your concept s) and to hear t hose of other community groups. Working
with the Centennial Committee, we want to make sure there isno duplication of projects, programs or
effort
s and
that
each group has a distinctive role in the celebratory year.
Thank you in advance
for
your contributions to our celebration and
the
City Council looks forward to
hearing
your
ideas on July 6th.
Sincerely,
Jason Burnett

Centennial
Herewith
my
thoughts on
the
Centennial. Some are closely related to ones advanced by Jan Reimers and also
by Maryanne Lloyd as mentioned by Barbara Livingston.
1. I had initially
thought of
going back through the historical record and portraying the various actions by the
planning commission, and
the
council as well,
that
have affected the character of Carmel. This could include
controversies on
major
projects and issues (house numbers, parking meters neon signs, etc.).
It
would be
shown in posterboards
with
photographs.
2.
A similar thing would be a portrayal
of
the physical history
of
Carmel s development. There are many
books on the people and events in Carmel s history; this would show
the
various structures, and changes like
dirt vs paved roads,
or the
change from open fields to the urban forest, leading up to today.
3.
Another possibility, closely related to Jan s ideas, would be recognition of structures, both commercial and
residential,
that
have been preserved intact or well remodeled that significantly contribute to Carmel s
character everything
from
the big hotels, the library, City hall and selected well-preserved residences.
It seems to me i f the Centenn1al celebration
is
to be a year long, there needs to be ways for visitors ov r the
year to partake,
i.e.
a place to show things.
My thoughts, so far.

Centennia l ideas
I have some random thoughts for the Centennial. Actually, I find it difficult to identify anything that will show case the
Planning Of fi
ce and
Commission.
One
thing
might
be list of Carmel 'dent's' ..... I really
don't
like that myself, just brainstorming
Originally,
I
had thought of some sort
of
poster presentation that could be
set
up in the library. It could show case homes
and
buildings that
best
define the codes and guidelines
of
Carmel. Possibly, focus on the homes/buildings
that
have been
recently built
or remode
led.
I
understand that a
poster
rdea
was
also suggested
for
the
HRB
and that they thought businesses
in
Carmel
might
put
them in their windows.
Maybe
some of tne businesses in town would
allow
thern in the windows. (we might need
to
review our own
codes
for
that ) Also,
map
could be provided for those interested in walking in town to see the
homes/buildings
After today's meeting, I
wonder if we
might actually
do
something t
hat
would be truly useful for the city, staff and
commission. That
wo
uld be to create the list
of
guidelines
for new
residents. The list that we discussed today, letting new
residents and others know the purpose of the perm1ts and the process and the list of items that need permitting.
As
Don
sa id,
Q
uirky" Carmel
Possibly,
some
hu
mor
could be incorporated similar to the certificate
fo
r high heels.
I
take all
of
the rules
and
codes very seriously
and
we
would not want
t diminish that. BUT,
if
we could do something
that would be informative,
In
teresting, maybe even entertaining, and useful, that would be a great way to use our timel
Just
some
random thoughts

Ce
ntennial
I have been giving more thought to the contribution of the Planning Commission for the centennial. .
The more I think about it, the more I believe that a pamphlet of the codes with photos where needed and done, possibly,
in a question and answer format would be something that could/would be used for a hme after
2016.
It could be written in
a
se
rious, yet witty
w y .
.possibly with some humor tu
ck
ed in
....
m
y
be even a Bates cartoon,
i
appropriate. I really like
using the word quirk
y
so maybe, "Carmel's Quirky Codes" could be a working title.
Ph
il
Bowhay is a creative writer
wh
o might help. I would want to be sure that we, the planning office and commission
would
be
in control
of
the documen
t.
It could be fun to prepare and could be handed out to visitors and
at
the desk and to
new residents, etc. It might be used to address some of the concerns we discussed
t
the recent meeting.
As to the cost..... We might
be
able to get some communi
ty
underwriting .... Probably not appropriate to have businesses
'advertise', but financing might be out there somewhere
I look forw rd to our discussion and to hear the other ideas.

Centennial Tree Project
Maria Sutherland
6/22/2015
- On January 1, 2016, begin offering Commemorate Trees Predicted demand will be
great.
- 100 people will also be commemorated. These people may be the first 100 to
purchase trees or the 100 top donors. Possibilities include engraved plaque with list of
names, or ''Tree Stars, like Hollywood stars, embedded in the sidewalk.
- Add
GPS marker
or coordinates for tech savvy people.
Auction locations as there may competition to get trees in the most favorable public
location. For instance, Doris
DaY
uses eBay to raise funds for her charity.
Sell trees
in
local stores (Ami, Eco-Carmel, Beechwood Home, etc) as a gift. It would
be the same price as buying through a website, so a profit margin would have to be built
in.
- Suggest a joint project Forest Beach Commission, Friends of Carmel Forest, and
the City of Carmel.
Funds
to go through Friends
of
Carmel Forest to be placed in
trust
for forest
restoration and maintenance. This will allow for tax deduction and funds would be
insulated from budget cuts and political agendas.
Goals
-
To
replace the approximate 1, 717 tree deficit and ensure their maintenance for the first
3 years
-
To
ensure a healthy forest for future generations
-
To
bring the community together to celebrate the beauty of Carmel 's forest
Benefits
- Forest gains trees
- Funds are raised for restoration and maintenance
- People have a beautiful tree to commemorate their loved one
- People form an emotional attachment to the trees
in
the forest
- People receive tax deduction through Friends of Carmel Forest
Information needed
- Tree signage and cost
- Watering and maintenance cost
Locations
- Advertising campaign
