Care of Populations Public Health Badges
The Care of Populations Public Health badges
provide public health professionals the opportunity
to increase skill development by addressing the Tier
1 National Public Health Domains and Core
Competencies. Students will possess skills and tools
to support core public health functions and
essential services.
Public Health
This badge introduces students to the tools of
public health. Students will explore the history of
the U.S. Public Health system and learn how public
health practitioners integrate core competencies,
essential services, and retrieval of evidence for the
goal of improving the health of populations.
Leadership
This badge will introduce six key practices of
collaborative leadership: Assessing the
Environment, Creating Clarity, Sharing Power and
Influence, Building Trust, Self Reflection, and
Developing People. Course activities will build
collaborative and team-oriented leadership
capacity among public health professionals as well
as diverse state and local community partners.
Financial Planning
This badge introduces students to various
management concepts, as well as the basic
principles of financial planning. Students will be
exposed to financial and management tools to learn
how they are utilized in all areas of decision
making.
Community
This badge introduces students to the concepts of
population-based program development,
implementation, and evaluation. Additionally
community-based relationships, program
methodology, and the social determinants of health
will be explored.
Policy
This badge focuses on developing policy
development & program planning skills, based on
the Core Competencies for Public Health
professionals, Tier 1. Course activities will help
students build awareness, understanding and
capacities related to health improvement planning,
developing program goals and objectives, strategic
planning, public health policy, and quality
improvement.
Culture
This badge introduces students to the concepts of
health and health care disparity and the importance
of learning how individuals define, react to, and
treat illness and other health risks.
Medical Terminology
The Medical Terminology Badge Courses are
designed for those want to expand their
knowledge and understanding of medical
language, or professionals who need an in-depth
review of specific body system terminology.
Introduction to Medical Terminology
This badge provides an overview of medical
terminology. Students in this course will learn how
medical terms are formed, how to effectively
translate medical terms, and how to apply those
terms to the medical setting. Students will also learn
the terms used to describe the anatomy of the body
and the position of the body, as well as the basic
terms that relate to diagnostic and laboratory
procedures, and pharmacology.
Bones, Muscles, and Skin
This badge covers material over the integumentary
(skin) system, the muscular system, and the skeletal
system. Included in this course are the structure and
function, pathology, diagnostic and treatment
procedures, and abbreviations related to these
systems. It emphasizes accurate interpretations and
analysis of patient, hospital, and other medical
records.
ASL Specialized Interpreting
ASL Specialized Interpreting Badges are
designed for individuals who need to further
their interpreting skills in healthcare settings.
(Please note that students must possess
basic interpreting skills before enrolling in
this course. Instructor permission is
required to enroll in the ASL badges.)
• Introduction to Healthcare Interpreting
These courses are designed to promote an infusion of
resources related to interpreting in healthcare. The courses
will serve as an introduction to the benefits and challenges
of interpreting in healthcare settings in an effort to prepare
interpreters in making well- informed decisions about their
readiness and qualifications for interpreting in these settings.
• Medical Terminology
School Health
This badge is a graduate level educational course
designed for licensed professionals who work in a
school setting, such as school nurses, social
workers, psychologists, and counselors. Licensed
professionals will earn graduate credit and may
earn contact hours towards relicensure.
This course focuses on the anatomical and
physiological basis of lactation and breastfeeding,
and the biological components of human milk that
make it the best nutrition for infants.

Scholarship Opportunity
• Enroll in a badge course by Friday, September 14, 2018 to be eligible for a scholarship up to $125 to cover the application fee and tuition for one 0.5 credit hour badge course.
• Students who previously enrolled in one or more badge courses are eligible for a $75 scholarship.
• Scholarships are limited and available on a first come basis until all funds have been awarded.
• After the scholarship deadline, the cost of the course will return to its original price and a one-time $25 application fee is required if you have not previously enrolled at Wichita State University.
